At one place, we ordered an expensive seafood rice dish and it was almost inedible due to how salty it was. There was no other flavor besides salty. The only redeeming thing about this place and why it got 2 stars is because of the egg custards at Manteigaria. They are absolutely delicious and actually worth the hype. Truly an incredible place. Although I only tried one of the food stalls, so many others looked amazing. I had the classic steak sandwich (prego) from O Prego Da Peixaria and oh my stars. Possibly the best thing I've ever eaten. The grilled octopus from the stall next door looked incredible as well. I also bought some canned fish (mackerel and cod) at another stall! Visiting the Mercado da Ribeira is a "must" while in Lisbon. I literally walked around to each food stall to peruse their menus. I waited for something to catch my eye, since making a decision of "where" to eat was too difficult (as I was sure each place had great food). When I stopped by the Marlene Vieira stall, one thing stuck out: Pastéis de massa tenra com pato (Fried duck turnovers)!!!!!! Ok, that sold me. I got a meal that came with an entree, dessert and drink for 12 euros. Entree: Rosbife a portuguesa. The roast beef was very flavorful and when mixed with the spinach and potatoes, it was really delicious. There was a light sauce of some sort that added to the flavor. Dessert: Sardinhas doces de Trancoso. This was like a crispy sweet empanada with an almond-y filling. The crust was a little stale. Meh. I also ordered the duck turnovers, which came 2 to an order. I shared that with my friend Kim. It was so good! Definitely the best tasting item from all that we ordered. Overall, the market is such a great place to gather. We had come in around 5pm so it wasn't very busy. Finding a place to sit was easy and effortless. Overrated in my opinion. We stopped in here when the rain started to come down, which was great to keep us from getting wet. We did a lap, in awe, hungry bellies, and discussing what to get. We opted for an Aperol Spritz at one of the middle stands while we chatted and kept an eye on people getting ready to leave. It was busy and we were looking for a spot, but it was hard to grab a spot for 4. We finally found one on the end and took turns going up for food. I visited 3 different stalls, and they were all just OK. I had my first sardines on tomato bread here, and that was the best thing I had. I had the Octopus hotdog from SeaMe and that was prob the biggest disappointment of all. There was so much bread, you couldn't taste anything else. It was a solid Instagram pic, but other than that, I'd get something else. Being from America, I wasn't a big fan of this place, as we have several of these cafeteria style dining places. Felt like a kid in a candy store when I walked in here. This large gourmet food court with an adjacent market reminds me of Whole foods market here in the states but jammed packed with renowned restaurants. This is great for someone likes me who keeps a list of recommended places to eat but with no time to visit them all. After browsing for about 15mn, I decided to go to SeaMe-Peixaria Moderna. I had their sardine sushi (sardinhas niguiri) and codfish sushi (Bacalhau niguiri) along with a refreshing glass of rose. That food was melt in your mouth delicious! Only regret was not getting more of the sardines. They were definitely my favorite dish. I love that it wasn't just tourists there, lots of locals frequent this place as well while on their lunch break. This reminds me, it's hard to secure or keep your seat during lunch hours. In our group of 3, 2 of us split up to wait in line while one person held down our seats. I love this place. So many food stalls in one place, lots of seating and great surroundings. The only problem is that there is so much choice of so many different foods it's had to choose just one! I eventually went for a goats cheese salad with blackberries, almonds and honey ice cream - yes, ice cream on goats cheese in a salad. It was DELICIOUS! Both of my friends with me went to different stalls. One had black risotto and the other a huge sandwich with suckling pork. We all had wine and it was a really refreshing. I came here tonight for my first dinner in Portugal and was not disappointed. TimeOut has hand-selected the country's best chefs to be represented in this new food market concept. Each restaurant has a brief and informative statement (in English and Portuguese) about why the restaurant was selected and what the chef is known for. There is plenty of communal seating and free wifi. Great place to come for lunch or dinner. On Saturday days, there is also an artisanal market with handcrafted goods. Before hopping on a train to Cascais at Case de sodre train station we popped in here for brunch. We literally walked around every one mentally taking notes as we passed..luckily I had read Emily's B review so the duck balls in orange sauce and stewed octopus was seared into my memory. These I obtained from one of the first stalls on the left called Cozinha da felicidade ..the octopus was *€10? And the duck balls €3..some white wine was chosen to compliment this. While we waited with a buzzer , I perched on one of the long pine tables to take in the view. Lots of business men were gathered for quick lunch while families bought mountains of bread and fine meat. The buzzer set off so I exchanged this for food. The octopus was tender and flavoursome in its tomatoey broth with potatoes and parsnip crisps..Christ though!! Those duck balls in orange sauce were sublime..so juicy and flavoursome!! Next stop was Sea Me..I had tried attending the restaurant itself but it had been so busy..so I was happy to sample their food..I eagerly bought the grilled sardine nigiri..for €5.60 this was not cheap but that squirt of lemon juice and rock salt on top gave it a different dimension..delish!! While I ordered a spicy pink cocktail my partner grabbed a ox burger..this was a busy stall so it took awhile..the vendor was in the bottom left corner advertising comfort food..the burger arrived bunless but the burger was so pink in the middle and was scrumptious, along with the garlic mayo and wedges. Finally we had tuna sashimi and hose maki at €6 each from confraria...the tuna was the best I have ever had ..so sweet and tender!! With our bellies full we had to walk past the tasty looking macaroons and ice-cream. This is a tourist trap. The walk along the waterfront is nice to get to the time out market but the 2 food stalls we tried which were cozinha da felicidade (ordered the octopus stew) and miguel laffan (ordered the black ink cod fish) were bland and very small portions. Both were 14-15€. Husband and I were still hungry afterwards. The seating is also very limited and you have to keep an eye on people who are almost finished to grab their seats when they got up. There is also no AC so it was very hot and stuffy. Even if the food was better I would not want to stay too long as we were sweating while eating our meals. It's nice to probably go and check out and grab a snack but not for dinner. In our opinion there are better options to try in Lisbon for their fresh seafood. read more

It was from "Alexandre Silva" and I had to wait quite long until I got my food but it was totally worth it. I just don't know that "food halls" are my thing. I get that if you're in a group, and the members of said group all may or may not like the same things, a place like this is a safe bet, because there are so many options. I understand that. However, does this place approximate anything approaching a pleasant dining experience? The answer to that question is an unequivocal "no," which to be fair, seems to describe pretty much any food hall, anywhere. You might have wanted to come here because it has "something for everyone" in your exceedingly picky party of 6, but good luck finding seating. It's truly hard enough just to find a seat for your own butt, much less the butts of your companions. Trying to find a seat here reminds me of the bad old days of idling around my university's parking lot and stalking people who look like they might be going out to their cars to leave. Same concept applies here, you have to awkwardly hover near people who appear to be close to finishing eating. I found the food itself to be fairly average - enjoyable enough, but certainly nothing for which I'd go out of my way. Mind you, I may not have ordered precisely the right things - I'd spent a week in Portgual at this point, and had eaten far more than my fill of codfish, cuttlefish, squid, pastel de nata and the like, so given that, and also the fact that I was really hungry and didn't want to wait in the longest looking lines, I went with more conventional foods. They were.......well, conventional. I guess the lesson here is, even if you're at a painfully crowded food hall in Portugal, you still want to wait in line to get the seafood. Time Out magazine have collected mini formats of Lisboa's best restaurants under one roof - in a food court format. I love these types of market and had a hard time choosing where to spend my money. It finally fell on Sea Me. I had cod niguiri with coriander and roasted almonds for starter. It was nice but to be honest a bit boring, I had expected more from a contemporary fish restaurant. For main I had their bacalhau - roasted salty cod and roasted potatoes on a spinach bed. Delicious! It made up for the starter. Though it should be said, that even if the prices are low, it is very much reflected in the size of the portions - I didn't get full from the starter and main course. Though, I saw that other restaurants had bigger portions. Still, I am happy with the experience and will definitely come back on my next visit to Lisboa :) read more

There is a very good selection of places to choose from, including fresh seafood, local meats, Portuguese dishes to more international ones. Really something for everyone. Oh and the dessert selection is excellent too! We tried a phenomenal chocolate and raspberry pavlova, which I would definitely go back for! If you're like me, choosing is the hardest part. The fun thing here is you can literally have a bit of everything. And if you're with a picky group, this helps ensure everyone is happy. The only reason I kept my review at 4 stars, is because the place felt a little more commercial than I had hoped (I tried a smaller marker in Spain which felt a little more local). The prices are good, especially for the quality, the only difficult part is picking with so many options. You can pick a full meal or a snack. Besides Portuguese the market offers everything from Asian to pizza and tons of desserts. I tried a couple of small plates, a Berliner (similar to a small donut) and a glass of wine. I spent around 11 euro. While the orders were small plates, it was a fair amount of food. Everything I tried was delicious as well. The wine is inexpensive for either a glass or a bottle. Most of the kiosks have menus written in English and the staff I encountered also spoke English. After you order they give a buzzer that will go off when your food is ready. This place is really touristy, but it also just offers some outrageous food! I came here during my last full day in Portugal for lunch and I wish I came sooner. First of all, this place is huge. Second of all, it's always packed. I'm not one for crowds, but when a place this big is constantly full of people, it must be good. Since so many tourists come through, everyone I encountered spoke English. For lunch I had braised tuna with chives and sweet potatoes. It was the best thing I ate in Portgual. On my way out I decided to stop by one of the tantalizing dessert counters and ordered a slice of cheesecake with a raspberry sauce on top. The cheesecake was less solid (it almost had a Jello consistency) than I anticipated, but still very good and the sauce was excellent. I was staying in Alfama, but decided to walk a mile back to the market in the rain for dinner that night. I wanted to try some of the more traditional foods, so I got the "Chef's Sampler" from one of the restaurants as well as a soup from another. When I finally found a place to sit down, my neighbors commented that I must have a big appetite *embarassing* I started talking to the people next to me, who were from Lisbon. I found the soup to be far too salty and couldn't finish it, but she said she didn't think it was salty enough! The Chef's sampler was okay, but it didn't compare to my lunch. I was leaving Lisbon at 11:00am the next morning, but decided to go back AGAIN when it opened at 10:00. The restaurants were still opening, so I bought some chocolates and sardines for gifts. For a first impression of Lisbon (as we're staying just next door), this was definitely a good one. We were surprised by the modern food court style and wowed by the quality of everything sold here. It's a cross between a food court, a Shoreditch food market and a chef's restaurant. Everyone sits on long wooden tables and the posh meals are served on trays you can take anywhere you like in the hall. The take-away or eat-at-the-counter food stalls are of incredibly high standard each with a few chefs behind each counter making sure each dish is prepared to perfection. Food ranges from transitional Portuguese croquettes, fried fish and cheese platters to your finger-licking burger and a modern take on sushi. There's most definitely something for everyone, you'll have more of an issue choosing than finding something you want to eat. We have been back already and had dishes to share at a couple of counters to try as many new tastes as possible. The prices are low - yesterday lunch + dinner for 2 incl. 6 glasses of wine in total cost us 63€/£50 with each mouthful worth more than it cost. read more

The Timeout Market concept is just great. However, we had bad luck in choosing the "Sea Me At the Market" place: Great Marketing looks really professional. I was sooo happy to see ceviche and ordered it right away, for my wife it was a little plate of scallops. Starting with the scallops, they were very good if you manage to get away without the sauce, otherways the scallop died an unnecessary death because the corn sauce was so strong it pushed away the taste of the scallop. Ceviche is raw fish marinated in lemon for half an hour and very good. Instead of it I got a tuna in oil and mixed spices. I was able to turn it in for crab salad because it was no ceviche. The salad featured two table spoon of crab and two slices of smoked salmon... The wine however was perfect and adds at least one of the two stars I gave for the place. read more
