I normally don't write long reviews, but this experience needed to be shared. My partner and I traveled from New York to Puerto Rico to visit his family for Thanksgiving week, and we decided to take his parents, siblings, and nephew out for a nice pre-Thanksgiving dinner. We saw Kalizo , thought it looked upscale and promising, and chose it for what was supposed to be a special family night. Instead, it turned into one of the worst dining experiences we've ever had. From the moment we arrived, the service was disrespectful and careless. We were a party of six, and the host simply pointed to a section and told us to "sit over there" -- no greeting, no walk-through. He dropped the menus on the table and walked away. We sat for over 20 minutes with no one approaching us for drinks or orders. We had to stop multiple staff members just to ask, "Can we please get a waiter?" Each time we were told someone was coming, but no one did. When the waiter finally showed up, he acted rushed, uninterested, and dismissive. He kept telling us that several items we wanted were "not available," rushing us to pick something else. I ended up ordering something quick because I honestly didn't know if he'd ever come back. Meanwhile, there were only about three other tables occupied, and we noticed something very uncomfortable: The English-speaking white customers were getting A1 treatment -- constant refills, servers checking in on them, drinks delivered correctly, food synchronized -- everything. Our table, where we were mostly speaking Spanish with my partner's family, was basically ignored. Our drinks came out wrong. Refills took three or more requests. Food came out one plate at a time, so half the table was done eating before the rest of us even received our meals. My plate was missing the sides and sauces it came with. I had to physically get up and find someone to ask for them. At one point, after asking three times for a Sprite refill, I just stood up and went straight to someone and said, "Can you please just bring me a Sprite can, a to-go box, and the check?" because I had enough. The food itself? Not good. Definitely not worth the price. And the service? Terrible. A woman who worked there quietly apologized to us and said she saw everything happening, but she couldn't intervene because she wasn't a server. That says enough about the environment. Overall, it felt like we were treated differently simply because they assumed we were locals or because we were speaking Spanish. Meanwhile, the tables of English-speaking tourists got excellent service. What was supposed to be a nice family dinner turned into a frustrating, embarrassing, and disappointing experience. I would not recommend this place, especially if you're expecting fair service or celebrating something special. read more

I can be quite the food critic at times and let me tell ya, this place was nothing less than amazing. We stayed at the condos a couple minutes away so we decided to give them a shot based on the good reviews. Our waitress gave us all the best suggestions on the menu. I ordered the monfongo y camerones (shrimp) with the cilantro sauce. It was so good i almost ordered it twice just to take the second order home. If your a seafood lover then you'll need to stop here. There is every type of fish on the menu that will satisfy your craving. From mahi mahi to lobster and the prices are competitive. The grilled octopus runs $22 dollars. I personally think that's a great price for the amount you get. If you want to try the octopus salad that will only run you $9 dollars. Avoid this place if you can. We had a really disappointing and frustrating experience. Our food was prepared incorrectly by the kitchen, and instead of simply apologizing and fixing it, the server became defensive and started arguing with us. He kept repeating that it was not his fault because the kitchen messed up. That completely missed the point. As a customer, I do not care who made the mistake. The kitchen and the server are part of the same restaurant. I came here to enjoy a meal, not to get dragged into an argument about blame. The attitude we were met with felt like: pay for the food, and if it is wrong or you do not like it, that is your problem. 5 star for their Pina colada - full of tropical flavors and very creamy. As a matter of fact, all of their cocktails look pretty and delicious. Blue margarita was very sweet if that's your thing. For food, we ordered the stuffed red snapper that came with shrimps, octopus and another type of seafood (forgot the name). In my opinion, the dish was too saucy which overpowered the flavors of the seafood. It also came with mofongo which made the dish a pretty big portion that's big enough for two people. This was our favorite restaurant in the Fajardo area and we ended up visiting 3X! Everything was so delicious. The stuffed tostones cups were outstanding - we ordered shrimp and chicken. The rice and bean dishes were very well seasoned (arroz momposteado - original or with steak). The skirt steak and shrimp dish was perfect. Drinks were also made very well - frozen and well-blended. The outdoor patio is very comfortable and charming with the perfect level of lighting to give a great ambiance with also being able to read a menu. Service was perfect. The food here is excellent. Very fresh. We had fried cheese and octopus salad as apps. Both were perfect. The cheese is cut into large rectangles and fried. No breading. It tastes like homemade cheese. Served with a sweet sauce. Plenty for the table to share. The octopus salad was very fresh. Mixed greens with tomatoes and a light vinaigrette all served on a flat, flaky, buttery biscuit which soaks up the dressing. Lots of octopus pieces. For a cocktail I had the most amazing coconut mojito. It was served in a large jar-type glass. Not a puny little glass like other places serve. It was creamy and bright. Best mojito ever! For dinner I had the grouper with creole sauce. The fish was fresh and cooked perfectly. The creole sauce added the perfect flavor, not strong at all. And for a side I had the red beans and rice which were delicious. I would go back here in a heartbeat. All seating is outside on a covered patio with ceiling fans. Service was amazing. This was a great lil restaurant with outdoor seating located on the East side. My friends and I stopped by for lunch. We ordered everything from the mahi mahi mofongo , fried pork meal, beef empanadas, sirloin steak mofongo, and the mixed seafood creole platter. Wow flavors here are on point! Food is cooked fresh. We really loved the empanadas. Very large in size and packed with plenty of meat. The seafood creole and mahi were my favorite. A very creamy rich sauce with tender fish. The pork and steak dishes were great as well. The pork was fried perfectly and wasn't dry at all. Price wise food here is pretty expensive. Around $20 per lunch entree. This place is a great place to grab lunch or dinner after visiting any of the beautiful beaches nearby (Playa Siete Mares & Playa Escondida are within walking distance). The arepas de pulpo are very filling. The filled tostones of churrasco are also a must get. As an entree, I got the mofongo with chicken. The mofongo was a little dry but paired with the Kalizo sauce (parmesan base) it was perfectly delicious. The drinks here are very tasty and the service its friendly. But never judge a book by its cover. Everyone at Calizo was very friendly and the food was fantastic. Gods variety and combination of dishes. We had the Mahi-Mahi with a shrimp and octopus sauce, Mofongo filled with fish and a shrimp sauce, kids had grilled chicken with onions and pasta. Even those dishes were delicious. Kalizo is a somewhat small and unassuming roadside restaurant with food that will not disappoint you. The simple wooden high tops and metal chairs make this establishment look a bit old and tired. But don't mistake Kalizo for a simple eatery - the food here is well above average and the chefs demonstrated their skill with each dish they serve. Our seafood appetizer was well seasoned with lemon and salt, featuring mouth watering shrimp. We ordered a chicken and a red snapper dish, both of which were expertly prepared, hot off the grill, and seasoned to delight. The Mofongo at Kalizo is among the BEST in Puerto Rico. The ceviche tastes like it came right from the sea, at just the right temperature, and and was flavorful without overbearing. I do think the menu is a bit hard to understand and it isn't clear what sides come with which dish or the differences between various types of fish or pork. Our waitress wasn't the greatest at explaining the difference, but that may be a language issue and I'm sure it would be easier to understand if we were native speakers with better Spanish. Altogether, Kalizo provides a delightful meal, reasonably fast service, and a good price. read more

Fresh cooked everything ! They're open noon to 9pm most days, but it does take a little while to get your food after ordering because everything is cooked per order. We got a medium red snapper platter and it was enough for two. We got there around 7pm, just before the dinner crowd and we're lucky we ordered when we did because they got slammed pretty quickly. They have a collection of tables, menu in English and Spanish beside the registers for your non native speakers which was awesome and the staff was very nice. Would definitely recommend the red snapper, we also got an seafood arepa that was delicious, in a lime sauce that we ate too quickly to photograph. read more

Since or first visit about a month ago, we have returned 4 times. The Arepa mixta (Arepa stuffed with Shrimp and Octopus) along with a really cold beer is great and just two for me and one for my wife makes up a meal.
