My friend and I were looking for some healthy options and after a quick Yelp search we found this restaurant. Once we arrived, we were able to find a street parking spot! There was no wait time and we were able to get a table. The server was very sweet. I am vegetarian and was looking for veg options. She went through the menu with me and helped me think through. I got the vegan spicy tomato pizza and my friend got the shakshouka. We also got some herbal tea to go on the side. The tea came out pretty quickly and tasted great. The food also came out pretty quickly. The presentation of the pizza was top notch and I could not wait to dig in. The portion size was adequate. The vegan cheese was yummy and the spice level of the pizza was just right. The pizza was packed with flavor and thin crust! My friend liked the shakshouka too. Gather nails the farm-to-table concept and was very highly recommended by my vegetarian friends. We came here after class one day; even with our last-minute planning, we were able to secure a table for the six of us that evening. We shared a plate of the tossed green salad and crispy Brussels sprouts, in addition to two pizzas - Fun-Gi and the Spicy Tomato. The crispy Brussels sprouts stole the show - the deep-frying created a smoky flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture that was equally loved by vegetarians and non-vegetarians in the group. The tossed salad was decent; the lettuce was heavily coated with oily dressing, which I think could have used more acidity. The Fun-Gi pizza was our favorite of the two pies - the hint of truffle oil and rosemary took this mushroom pizza to the next level. I also loved the light and airy crust, which had the perfect amount of crispiness. I wasn't as much of a fan of the Spicy Tomato pizza; while I really liked the unexpected sweetness from the tapenade, the cashew cream drizzle seemed out-of-place. We came here for brunch over the weekend and were very impressed! They food was tasty and the prices were really reasonable. They also had really good drinks! Service was a bit lackluster. Took a while to get someone's attention so that we could order. We got the chef's pizza and shakshouka to share between two people. Wish I had read the reviews beforehand to choose another pizza because the chef's pizza, which sounded really fancy on the menu, was a bit underwhelming, even though it was one of the more expensive ones. Just cheese with some veggies. Crust was good but nothing crazy. I'd want to try their spicy tomato pizza though. Looks very unique. Shakshouka was also good but nothing special. Just eggs in some tomato sauce. They only gave two pieces of sourdough to dip it in so we had to ask for more, which also took a while. My family and I went to an early dinner at "Gather", because we were out running errands nearby and finished much sooner than we'd anticipated. We really enjoyed it! First of all, they have a lot of gluten free options, and are able to accommodate celiacs and those with serious gluten allergies. One of my family members cannot have gluten, or even food that is cross contaminated. They cook their gluten free pizzas in a separate area from the regular pizzas, and their fries are made in a fryer that is not used to fry anything else. They have gluten free burgers (a choice of a gluten free bun or served as a lettuce wrap) as well. I got a happy hour cocktail; something with tequila in it, and it was yummy. We had a couple of appetizers: my daughter and I shared the mussels ($17, for a lot of them) and the others had the deviled eggs ($10 for only three halves). The mussels were good. My wife says that the eggs were excellent. A couple of us ordered the 1/2 chicken, which was of really good quality. It had yummy crispy skin, and was served with broccolini and over a homemade mole sauce. One of my sons asked for hot sauce, and they brought some; also home made. It wasn't that hot, but it was tasty. The rest of the fam ordered pizza and burgers. Everything was good, by all accounts. (The "cheese pizza" had tomatoes and shallots on it, FYI). The highlight of the early evening was the dessert: ice cream, made by Strauss Organic in Marin County. It was SOOOOOO good. I recommend the "Cookie Dough" flavor, which also has strawberries in it. We saw Gather restaurant in a modern-looking building in downtown Berkeley and decided to give it a try for Sunday dinner (Oct 2025). Inside it's a minimalist industrial look with farm-to-table foods and wooden and metal tables and chairs. They gave us a table in the middle of the room so we had a good view of everything and everyone, and a quiet view of the busy evening traffic out the surrounding floor-to-ceiling windows. Service was prompt and professional. The per-glass wine prices are reasonable, and we had a 2022 Carmel Road Monterey Pinot Noir for $12. We stayed with seafood for our appetizers: simple rich roasted mussels in white wine and butter, sprinkled with parsley; and ahi tuna crudo and avocado, made more complex with with a citrusy Vietnamese Nước Chấm fish sauce, and a furikake sprinkling of seaweed and sesame, with fennel, cilantro, and fried shallots. A charming adventure in flavor! We each went in different directions for our main courses. The $36 roasted chicken with soft sautéed peppers and lightly crunchy pepitas, was tender and juicy with the many bright flavors of spicy aji verde, tart garlic-y mojo, and fresh intense cilantro. The $38 tangy-balsamic glazed grilled pork chop came with spicy cheesy grits, sweet peach and corn, and wide-awake arugula. The $23 Harvest Bowl was Imperial black "forbidden" rice, tender with a chewy bite, supporting tasty peas, carrots, squash, eggplant, and bold kale, flavored with coconut. The table was provided with $7 herbed foccacia bread, with oil and balsamic. Ducked into this place on Saturday before a concert, and were able to be seated immediately at the bar. There, Antonio took care of us with some delicious mixed drinks. I got the First Class which was so good it was gone before I knew it! My wife got a Cucumber Mint Spritz which was refreshingly not super sweet. I finished the night with a classic Old Fasioned and it was made perfectly. For food we had the roasted carrots (delicious) and an extremely good pizza. It was the Sopressetta Salami pizza and it hit so hard. I only wish there was a bit more of the calabrian chili sauce, but damn t was it good! First time going to Gather and was there for lunch with friends. I was impressed it wasn't a college franchise lunch joint since it was across the street from the Cal campus. Inside was nice upscale casual with open kitchen and pizza oven. We ate outside on the patio under a covering that reminds you of a greenhouse - a little warm, could have used a few fans however nice to be outside on a Fall day. We started with a traditional pepperoni pizza to share, yum. I had a Caesar salad with chicken and I would certainly order it again. I came here and really enjoyed my experience here. We did make a reservation and we ended up sitting in the back, which was a nice little patio area. I tried the burger and the burger was absolutely delicious. Very juicy very filling and left me stuffed. Parking is a bit difficult to find if you come during a busy hour just like the rest of Berkeley however I wouldn't leave some extra room so you can find parking before arriving if you're meeting with someone. Overall great experience would recommend checking out their menu. Very cute. Indoor area as well. Service was pretty good. We arrived at 6:50pm on a Monday night for our 6:45pm reservation (they said our slot would be good for 15 minutes), and seated us promptly. Our server was excellent, attentative and friendly. We were in a good mood because we found free street parking just a couple of blocks away. I ordered a cup of the Cannellini Bean Soup as an appetizer, and the Roast Organic Chicken as my main. My wife possibly ordered the Harvest Bowl with grilled chicken on top. We both loved our food. My soup was thick and delicious. The chicken was still juicy, and the potatoes and root veggies that came with it were cooked perfectly. I only ate half of my chicken, so I was able to enjoy it the next day. Had this place bookmarked for awhile and finally got to have an early dinner here. Menu is simple and good options for those with dietary restrictions. Calamari was different than what we all expected (it wasn't fried), but it was a pleasant surprise. The brussel sprouts were yummy and the caprese salad was refreshing, also another surprise that it was a bit deconstructed. I ordered the Sopresetta Salami Pizza homemade with a thin crust. It wasn't too cheesy or saucey, but perfect portioned ingredients. The burger had a thick patty. The drinks were not strong and they didn't have any of the main vodka brands like Grey Goose or Ketel 1. And the drinks were really sweet. The staff were friendly and attentive. Yeah I know it's pricey generic American dishes, but done so well that you'll be whistling the star spangled banner on your way home! We came here for a summer Sunday dinner and we were able to be seated without a wait. We ordered the Shishito Peppers, Roasted Corn Soup, and Sausage Pizza with mushrooms (+$4). Shishito Peppers (4/5): I'm a sucker for blistered shishito peppers, and these did not disappoint! The peppers are gnarled and curled up from the heat, gently caressing your mouth with that earthy charred taste. The drizzled pesto provides the saltiness and hint of herbal aromatics. Too pricey for the amount of peppers you get, though. Roasted Corn Soup (5/5): What a hearty and satisfying soup! The texture is immaculately smoothly blended, yet still has a lot of body. The light corn flavor prances across your tongue, and one sip warms your entire body against the chilly Berkeley weather! Sausage Pizza (+ mushrooms) (6/5): Holy shiitake for just an extra 4 bucks an entire colony of these funky fungi friends found their way on top of our pizza -- not just Cremini mushrooms but also a generous amount of fancy oyster mushrooms! These mushrooms provided a bouncy textural contrast to the crumbly, savory fennel-heavy sausage -- one bite and I felt like I could bounce myself right across the street to the Cal campus! The pizza itself is simple yet does all the little things right. The charred crust has a super crispy exterior with a lusciously soft inside that won't break your teeth when biting it. The pizza is structurally sound -- the tip of a slice doesn't sag with sogginess and floppiness when you pick it up. When i arrived to the restaurant we were greeted by the hostess in a condescending / passive aggressive manner. after giving her my number of guests for a table which was 4, she hesitated to find us seating with multiple empty tables which could more than definitely seat my whole party. After finally being seated we sat down and glanced at the menu. We did not find the food to be appetizing or appealing to us to which we decided to exit. When I moved to the Bay Area from the east coast, I thought all the food here would be amazing. After all, this is the backyard of Chez Panisse and Alice Waters and the farm to table movement. How could any mediocre food survive? Well, by location location location. I do recall eating at Gather nine years ago and it was good. My last few visits in the past six months have been very disappointing. It seems Gather is coasting on its prime location near UC Berkeley and downtown Berkeley and no longer on its food. Its ambiance and quality of service remains good, I'll give you that. But the food gets a C- from me. I ordered a Caesar salad with roasted chicken. The lettuce was fresh but it was overall bland. If there were any anchovies I couldn't taste them -- or much of anything. No kick from blue cheese. The chicken didn't taste roasted. Just cooked. Bland. I've had better Caesar salads in plastic boxes from Trader Joe's. I stole a friend's French fries and it tasted good in the Sysco sense of good. Perfectly fine fry but nothing to write home about. They're proud of their pizzas and the mushroom pizza I stole from another friend (they're patient with me) was good but not east coast food. West coast low expectations good. The mushrooms were yummy but the cheese and the sauce and the crust were .... West coast low expectations. Gather could do better. Hire a chef who cares about ingredients and cooking. While the food here is good, it lies on the steeper end, but what can you really expect given the Downtown Berkeley location. Our waiter was fabulous, even inquiring with the kitchen to see if substitutions are possible (they're not, unfortunately, but it was nice of him to ask). I ordered the seasonal frittata. The peppers inside were delicious and it had a frittata's quintessential fluffy texture. The portion left something to be desired (as did my friend's shakshouka). Always on the hunt for a great brunch spot, especially in the East Bay. We were pleasantly surprised recently to have found Gather Kitchen & Bar on Oxford Street in Berkeley. Serving lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, there is also a beautiful bar with curated mocktails, cocktails, beer & wine. Service was gracious & a stand out highlight from our brunch experience would def. be the Brunch Pizza (baked eggs, tomato sauce, caramelized onions, bacon, potato, fontinella, mozzarella, fresh herbs, $25). So flavorful and worth the extra splurge. Every dish looked almost too good to eat, screaming fresh & locally sourced.
