I was in town visiting family and was able to get in a couple boxing classes. It was great! I really enjoyed the program and flow of the classes. But that's what I deserve for being so lackadaisical about my fitness... for the past few years. Yep. It really has been in the range of years since I was on a decent workout regimen, and unfortunately, it shows. In a little over a week I leave for the Domincan Republic with my partner in crime, Dana G. A little over two days ago I tried on a swimsuit at local retailer and had to double take... in a really sh*tty and depressing kind of way. A head turner, my buns were not; a stomach turner was more how I felt about it. It was that exact moment that I decided to finally take my girls Joanne W, Aimee M, and Ericka A up on their Patriot Boxing TRX fitness regimen... and I was dragging Dana G with too, because if there was a chance I might go down in a sweaty ball of out-of-shape unglory, she was coming with me. Our instructor was Janet... wait for it... Jackson. Sorry, but when your name's Janet Jackson you're probably well aware of the fact it's impossible to call you by just your first name. At first, well, at first I was afraid. I was petrified. I was actually visibly scared, as Joanne pointed out ,and not really sure what kind of crazy jukin' moves they were going to try and make me do on those new fangled sex sling lookin' things. Then not even a moment later the class had begun and there was no time to be scared, petrified, afraid or anything but intensely determined to prove to myself that I could do it. What I liked about Janet's class as opposed to other fitness classes that I've attended is that she doesn't yell at you. She doesn't single you out, she doesn't criticize, and she treats you like an adult- not a prisoner... as was my experience in most other fitness classes I'd tried in my life. I like that she's loud but not in a drill sergeant kind of way- more of a hype man/motivational kind of thing. And she won't get in your face and push you to push yourself to a point you aren't yet ready for. She understands that we're all adults, that we're all there for a reason and that we know our own limits and our own threshold for them. And I appreciate that to no end. I also loved that the class sizes were fairly small- I think there were 9 people in ours, and not intimidating for first timers. Janet took the time to learn our names and give positive words of encouragement. TRX with JJ is a total #WIN. As for the facility itself, it was certainly a little intimidating at first, what with the boxing and cage fighting happening simultaneously- plus all the sweaty men and that sort of pee smell that always hangs around when there are a bunch of them working out together. But I did really like that for one monthly rate you can take any of the offered classes at any time. And it was neat to see some of the smaller girls who were taking the boxing classes next to the big burly bag-punching men. You go, girl! Will I be back? Well, I'll have to see how my new schedule comes together a bit better but I wouldn't be surprised to find myself TRXing it up with the gang in the future. But for now, I'm going to try and re-learn how to wipe my butt, because the system I've been using has proven to be a little too painful for this TRX novice. (Yowza- That smarts!)

Other…read morewomen would approach me for conversation if I was at the bar, and I'd exchange casual smiles with people while passing them in the grocery store--just typical daily interactions. Rarely did I receive compliments on my looks or get hit on. But when people met me after I got "sexi smexi," it was a night-and-day difference. As some of my best friends have told me, I come across as "intimidating" and "mean." I've had people tell me that before they got to know me, they thought I'd beat them up. I've had guys tell me that other guys wouldn't date me because they're too afraid--that I'm "too sexy." I can walk straight to the front of any VIP line at a nightclub and get in. I get hit on significantly more, and I've even been offered a lot of money in exchange for my "time," which never happened before I joined UFC. People offer me jobs more often and try to recruit me for marketing. Rich men and athletes have taken me out on very luxurious dates... and let me tell you, it's slightly exhausting. I used to work from home and didn't see many people, so going into busy places made me anxious. Before, I just wanted to blend in. Now, all I do is stand out I'm not even wearing lip gloss, but I be poppin', and all these boys' lips be droppin'. I know it's just human nature. People are attracted to a juicy Caboosey--the compliments are endless. It's almost as if I can say nothing wrong. I assure you, I'm an awkward person, and I do say awkward things--but people jump in to save the conversation when that happens. Before I started working out, people were still very nice to me. I didn't get approached as much--especially at night--but I still received compliments. Just nothing compared to how I look now. My friends have even asked me to "dial it down" at the gym because they're tired of all the guys hitting on me and leaving none for them. To me, though, it doesn't matter what you look like. It doesn't matter if you go to the gym to build muscle, lose weight, stay in shape, or whatever--what matters is whether you're comfortable with yourself. If you want to be 10 feet tall and that makes you happy--do it. If a certain workout is too much for you and you love being the way you are--don't do it. Don't follow what others are doing--just be you, and let everyone else be them Because regardless of shape, size, or anything else, underneath it all, we're all 10s. What really matters is what's on the inside. "Maybe if we loved ourselves, it wouldn't be so hard to love each other." -- Skizzy Mars The whole point is not to value everything based on your looks, but instead on your achievements and how you feel physically and mentally. Working out has made me more physically fit , which has given me more confidence--but that confidence should have always been there, regardless of how I looked. Some people only notice your appearance, but there's so much more to a person than that. Maybe in a galaxy far, far away, there are people who are just specks of light with no bodies... because when we're 80 , we're all going to look the same ‍ I've definitely been my own biggest hater before--fueling myself with negativity because of how I looked, how clothes fit, and how I compared myself to others. It's an uphill battle to love yourself 100% of the time. There's a lot of negativity and pressure to be a certain way. It's okay to not know where to start. It's okay to take a step back or take a break. Don't let your mind play games with you--you are stronger than you think and capable of things you never thought possible. So baby gorl (or boi), wear whatever you want, treat your body like a temple, and just be you. Thank you, UFC, for being awesome and for being a place where people can grow and have fun.

Signed up for a class here through the park district. My first impression after finally locating…read morethe place (it has no sign) was "am I in the right place?". I was one of the only white people in there, which initially made me pretty uncomfortable, but after a few sessions I hardly noticed. You pay for a one month class, you can go up to three days per week (6:30-7:30ish for adults, earlier for kids). I don't remember exactly how much I paid (~$70?) but if you went all three days per week you would most certainly get your money's worth, but good luck having the energy. This isn't you mom's aerobics "kickboxing" (I use that term loosely) class, this is a genuine Mexican boxing gym and has the feel of a gritty "Rocky" movie (except its on telemundo). Most of the session is you working on your punches and hitting the bag, with about 12-15 minutes of one-on-one time with the instructor. Ending with some ab exercises. I took the class as an opportunity to do some cross-training to mix up my routine. I came out of the class feeling as if I had actually learned some boxing skills. Its been along time since I had ever felt so exhausted after a workout. And there is nothing more rewarding then hitting a punching bag after a long day of work, I could feel my stress leaving me. I would recommend taking the class at least once, I'm not sure if it would be a benefit to repeat. I plan on trying it again just because I am now interested in boxing and really felt like this class whipped by butt in shape. You could always take the exercise routine you learn in this class, buy yourself a punching bag and do the whole thing at home, but you would miss out on the instruction.

Location: This place is VERY hard to find. A Google search will tell you it's in Bensenville…read more Technically it's in Elmhurst, but it straddles the border between the two. The address will not help you, especially if it's dark out. We drove up and down Larch Street searching for it. There is no sign outside so it was hard to tell where it was. Just so you know, it's directly across the Comcast parking lot. Not in the big building with all the offices, but this tiny little office on the street. The atmosphere: It's in a warehouse. Go in through the back door. If you go in through the front, they'll look at you like you're crazy. Mexican music playing as you box. Modelo in the fridge. And water. But also Modelo. Parents looking bored as shit as they wait for their kids to finish boxing. Interesting posters. Questionable mattresses in the locker room. Watch out for the bits of broken glass on the floor by the locker room. I assume this is from crazy weekend wrestling matches. Oh, and there's a tamale laying out in the parking lot. Boxing: This is not a structured class so don't expect an instructor standing at the front telling everyone what to do and everyone follows along in unison. Oh no no. The main guy's son greeted us after we stood there for about five minutes, thoroughly confused. He taught us the basics and kicked our ass the first day, but in a good way. We learned how to walk and do a basic combo and worked with punching bags. Throughout the month, we learned some more combos and other moves. The instructor is very patient and helpful. He speaks mostly Spanish but don't let that deter you. He can speak enough English to help you. Just pay attention. I think boxing comes so naturally to everyone in that gym, that for them, there really is no simple way to explain stuff. Just watch the way they do the motions and tell you how to move your body, and you've got it. Halfway through the month, my right hand really started hurting and the instructor understood that. Instead of telling me to shake it off, he took off his sparing hand thing so that I could punch his hand instead of the glove, which made it easier on me because there was less impact. The instructor has a lot of people sometimes to teach, so you're expected to do the routines by yourself. However, you do one-on-one time with him for a couple rounds. Here's the basic routine for the hour or so you're there: 4 rounds of walking 2 rounds of one-on-one time with the instructor to learn combos 6 rounds of punching bags 2 rounds of jump rope 2 rounds of hitting a truck tire with a sledge hammer or baseball bat 2 rounds of jumping back and forth on a tire 4 sets of ab workouts As you can see, most of that can be done on your own. They'll show you how to do this stuff the first day, so it's not hard to follow. Overall, I think this is a great place for boxing. It is unstructured and chaotic at times, but the instructors mean well and really do want to help you. Don't be intimidated. Everyone is there to learn. Also, don't be scared that it's in a warehouse. This is like a legit Mexican boxing/wrestling place so it doesn't look like much, but they'll kick your ass into shape. Oh and I'd recommend buying the wraps from them. The ones I got from the store were too small. At the gym, they were 5 bucks and they'll show you how to wrap them.

When I showed up, I was told to stand in front of a tv that showed a list of exercises and was told I could do the beginner side or the advanced side. The advanced side was just more reps. These exercises included jumping jacks, air jabs and hooks, push-ups, 3 burpees, pike crunches, 1-2-3s, and 3 sit-ups. I was told to do as many rounds as possible in 25 minutes. There was no warm up or cool down. Then, the trainer left to go talk with a woman for the duration of my 25 minute workout. Once I was done he told me I could only come to 3 classes a week...when my Groupon was for unlimited classes. Then, the best part, he said that the workout was the same for a whole week! So for my 6 week Groupon, I'd only get 6 different workouts. Maybe he's a more attentive trainer to those that pay monthly, but from my experience, he was not very good. I could have looked up that workout on Pinterest and did it in my living room. It would have been the same as the workout at this gym since he never said anything to me the entire workout. I've been to many boot camps and this was by far the worst. I would not recommend this gym to anyone except those that have never worked out before. The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because it might be a good starting point for someone just getting started in working out.
