Their Honey Dew blended tea was a tad sweet, but very refreshing in the heat. I really enjoyed it even though they added the tapioca balls when I requested to not have them. Their Thai iced tea with boba comes blended with ice. A little bit overly sweet and the boba is right on the cusp of being too crumbly. I don't think they heat it for long enough to get it to the nice chewy gumminess you would want with the pearls. They're almost there but not quite. read more

Best halo-halo I've had in a long time! I'm not sure what the "lahok" they have in there but it sure tastes great! Tastes almost like they're homemade instead of the bottled stuff. Not too sweet, it was a perfect combination you gotta try this one! Will come back when we're in Kauai again, definitely! I'm not sure if this is accurate but it seems like they've cut up all the "lahok" so that they all fit into the boba straw! Smart! I don't usually eat my halo-halo with a straw but they fill the cup to overflow so that I couldn't use my spoon unless I took some sips first. Came here for the first time because my wife was craving for halohalo waaaay past dinner. We got 2 halohalos and I must say that they probably do have the best halohalo that I've ever had in my life. They packed this cup to the top with ube ice cream, shave ice, great portion of fruits with actual texture and not mushy. I personally would prefer it a bit sweeter like Magnolias, but when you mix everything together, it's perfectly balanced. The ice to fruit ratio is crazy and there's some kinda ube jam along the cup. I don't know, but if you love halohalo like we do, you would love this place. They also have a large selection of Filipino snacks, drinks, and some frozen foods to buy. Overall, best halohalo value for the amount you pay and the cup is stuffed. The staff are friendly and helpful. There are 2 tables to sit at. The parking lot is huge. We came at night so it was kinda hard to see where exactly that I was, but it was pretty shady at night lol. As we pulled into the parking lot, it was pitch black and my headlights shined right on some shady-looking group of guys sitting on the ground in between their cars like they were gambling in a circle in the dark. This place is definitely hard to see so use your gps. You can't really see it from the main road because it's a little shop at the corner of a large warehouse. read more

Stopped by on a day trip to Kauai to visit my parents. Mom suggested we come here for the halo halo. The store is clean and shelves/refrigerators were organized. We ordered two halo halos and they made it so quick and it was huge for the price I paid. It was filled with lots of good stuff and my fave, lanka (jack fruit), which some places don't usually put. TJ's Variety won't match the major Asian grocers like Seafood City or 99 Ranch, but for a mom & pop store, this place packs a pretty good punch. You'll find Staples of Filipino groceries: Pampanga's Finest frozen meats, Goldilock's desserts, Menlo and Amor Nino lumpia wrappers, Star butter, Milo, various brands of Patis, and tons of snacks. There's also an impressive cosmetics section with Eskinol, placenta creams, and much more. I always come for the fresh produce (fresh green papaya, ready for tinola!) and the bubble tea. I am not sure how the reviews lead me wrong- was expecting the best halo halo ever. From the side of the street it feels like you are turning into a parking lot if a factory or industrial building. The store is like a loading dock with some refrigerators, deep freezers and shelves of goods. Ordered the halo halo and it did look beautiful. The taste was actually not very sweet at all- the ice cream inside was diluted by large chunks of ice rather than more shaved ice. Yes, there are different layers of goodies inside but everything taste watered down like they were trying to save money so gave you ice instead. I would not go out of my way to try this but maybe I just got a bad one. read more

I found this place when my friends and I were wandering around the area finding things to do for our trip and we stumbled upon the best place to get halo halo. Wow. Not only was the halo halo extremely photogenic, it had so many ingredients to it that I lost track of what was in it. We were just looking for shave ice at a time of day when shave ice places were closed. Little did we know we were about to have the experience of a lifetime. Curious why something called "TJ Variety Store" came up in a search for "shave ice," I skimmed the reviews to discover the existence of something called halo halo. We were racing against closing time, so we headed to TJ solely with the impression that this halo halo had the form factor of a slurpee. We pulled up in a large dark parking lot where TJ Variety was not only the only store open, but the only store with any light. There we were, face to face with a glowing open storefront and a lady in front of a giant HALO HALO banner. The halo halo itself lived up to the promise of our arrival, an explosion of glowing light in our Kauai food experience. For those of you who have never had halo halo, it's like an Italian ice made with Asian ice cream on top of every bubble tea ingredient minus the tapioca. There's ice cream, there's custard, there's condensed milk. And I don't know about other halo halo, but this one was nuts. There was pineapple. There was coconut. There was aloe. There was red bean. And there were these red jelly things on the very bottom that I had thought were strawberry, but are something else altogether. If you are in Kauai, you will not want to deny yourself the opportunity to experience the halo halo! (Note: the halo halo was surprisingly accessible for me even though I have a dairy allergy. My boyfriend was able to eat the halo halo as TJ intended. The lady recommended for me that I add some nondairy milk to it. Definitely a hole in a wall place located in what looked like an industrial area. Only reason why we came here was thru a couple we met from the gun range who were drinking Thai tea boba. We came here right after shooting and ordered the Thai tea boba. So good and so refreshing, given that we haven't had boba throughout our whole honeymoon trip.
