    Poke

Small convenience store with good poke. It was a 5 min drive from the beach so made it easy to drive over and grab lunch.

a car parked in front of the store

Best kept secret on the island..,phenomenal FRESH ahi poke at a reasonable price! You'd never know by looking at the outside of this place. Try it before you buy it! So good!!!

Great selection of poke. And these are just the fish options!

Meh. Poke was pretty good. It's inside a convenience store so it's a little off putting for me.

Fancy? No. Reasonably priced? Yes. Delicious? Absolutely. I had the shoyu with rice and it was fantastic - and only $7!

I get the Kalua Pork plate with Rice, Lomi Salmon & Poi (about $17 but worth it).

For me, Foodland Hawaii means a large selection of freshly made Poke. So during our trip to the…read morenorth shore of Kauai, we stopped into this location to explicitly get a variety for our lunch on the beach. It turned out great. Foodland is a Hawaiian original, founded in Honolulu on 1948 as Hawaii's first modern supermarket, and continues to be owned by the founder's family. It has 31 locations across the islands, but only one is still open in Kauai (the Lihue location closed during Covid). It's kinda hidden, so would need to explicitly look for it. It's a medium size supermarket. The poke station and hot deli are located together with the same associates manning both. It was busy and crowded around that area, so important to pull a number and wait. Once my number was called, got seven different items and the associate was patient. My wife doesn't like poke, so made herself a hot lunchbox for a good price (one Korean chicken drumstick at $2.50 each; cheddar cheese tots $2.79 for 0.31 lbs; one corn cob $1.29) while I made a deconstructed poke bowl ($3.38 for 2 scoops of white rice; chili garlic crunch ahi $4.80 for 0.30 lbs; Poke fresh ahi hawaiian style $11.56 for 0.34 lbs; california style ahi $4.80 for 0.30 lbs). My favorite was the California style, with the avocado. It reminds me of the taste of a California roll. Hate to admit it, but paying for almost triple the price for fresh ahi tuna isn't worth it...the from frozen was still great as a poke.

The poke was delicious and super affordable at less than $10 for a bowl. I think the key is that…read moreyou need to ask for a sample to find your favorite poke flavor. We found that the spicy tuna was softer and more delicious than the salmon pokes. I can see how people would rate the poke less than 5 stars if you purchase a flavor that you end up not being a fan of. We also loved the crispy chicken thighs from the hot food section. Surprisingly the poke and crispy chicken from Foodland ended up being one of my favorite meals in Kauai!!

I visited Safeway in Kapaʻa, Kauaʻi, Hawaii [4-831 Kuhio Hwy] on Thursday, 01/22/26 around 11:30…read moreAM. This location offered a wide variety of food options, including ready-made meals, hot foods, deli selections, and more, making it a convenient stop for quick bites or grocery shopping. What stood out most was the handcrafted sushi selection from Zenshi. There was an impressive variety of rolls to choose from, including California Rolls, Spicy California Rolls, Crunchy Rolls, Rainbow Rolls, Crunchy Shrimp Tempura Rolls, and Seaside Combos. They also offered additional items like Summer Rolls, Big Wave Poke Bowls, Spam Norimaki, and Calamari Salad, which added to the overall selection. I decided to try two Rainbow Rolls. The quality of the sushi was decent; not bad, but not particularly outstanding either. The taste was tolerable enough, especially considering the fairly reasonable price point. Overall, Safeway provides standard food offerings for customers and gets the job done. Clean grocery store and well-stocked along with plenty of parking and friendly associates.

Prices were a little higher than at home but it is Kauai. When looking for some fresh fish we couldn't find any Ono or Mahi Mahi but there was a large selection of Poke. It was our last day in Kauai, and didn't want to spend our time at the airport, waiting for our…read moreredeye flight. So decided to go to Costco to see if their optical department could tighten my Costco glasses before heading back to the mainland. The optical department closes earlier than the store itself, so we ended up wandering around. We intentionally went there on the last day after our luggage had been packed, thinking it would prevent us from buying things to bring back. But there were two things that we don't see on the mainland, that were of good price: 1.5 Coffee beans from Molokai Estate Coffee (100% from Molokai, and which my wife confirmed later was very good) and a Ube cream Liquor from the Philippines, that went great with the said coffee. Both fit in our checked bags and made it home safe. It wasn't too crowded because it was close to closing and was of large size, including self checkout lanes. Another good visit to Costco.

We arrived late in the day, so we missed out on the fresh poke and other seafood goodies. At least were able to grab some bottled water, Taro Brand Salmon Lomi, and chips. Those items alone were worth grabbing, and lasted us the entire week. My admiration for this location is because it wasn't as crowded as the Honolulu locations. Or maybe we just arrived at a good time late in the day on a Monday. Here, we were able to navigate through easily and select various treats for gifting. Like Mauna Loa chocolate macadamia nuts, a variety of Hawaiian Host items, and I tripped out seeing these bell pepper crisp and a ramen crunch snacks. We bought two bags of furikake and shoyu flavored rice crackers, or arare. In the bakery, I died and really wanted to try this fresh baked Mayorca Suprema sweet roll. Check out my pic, you'll be droolin'! And you can't leave the store without buying a bag of Island Princess Macadamia Popcorn Crunch or their honey roasted macadamia nuts. We did see cheap, but made of decent quality rain jackets if you need one ($19). As well as some bargain deals on casual shoes and sandals. No problem upon check out, service was cordial. And oh yeah, their outside food court is the standard. Hot dog and a drink $1.50, chicken bake, and a slice of pizza. Sadly, nothing different. No issues finding parking either. In short, this Costco location has a wide variety of items not found on the mainland. Great gift items as well as supplies you'll need for your resort stay. I mean, you can go to the Island Market or ABC Store, but that's where it can start to get pricey. Just my thoughts and my words. To each his own!
