In Hawaii, fresh poke is in abundance. Every place claims they are the best on the island. Each person to their own liking. When driving through Kauai, one will find there are general stores everywhere that will always have the usual convenience fare, tourist souvenirs, and poke. If you weren't seeking Whalers General store one would not know of the fresh poke that is fairly priced. Enter and head on towards the right. The laid back staff are patient as you decide! In addition to poke are other pickled selections of seafood. The local and fresh caught poke are all full flavored. When it comes to favorites the husband and I found ourselves enjoying every bite of the spicy ahi and shoyu ahi. The texture and cuts of the fish make all the difference. Can't believe it. A person in our group was having some stomach problems and just needed to use a restroom to clean themselves up and despite begging and offering to pay, staff wouldn't allow them to use the restroom. Where has humanity gone that a person can't use some simple facility? So impolite. Thanks for ensuring that we'll never visit your store again. Whaler's was a nice place to visit when staying in Anahola. They greet you with a a smile and offer a spicy ahi poke bowl which is quite popular for good reason! The sauce is not too spicy but has a nice flavor to complement the fish, onion, and rice. Edamame was also good as was their sushi. Prices are also reasonable so it's a no brainer. read more

Great little grocery in anahola and super great poke. Very friendly and upbeat. If you are like me and like to stay away from the crowds anahola is the place and this little grocery makes it super convenient as well. Was looking forward to the burger place next door but it appears to be out of business. The juice stop across the street is 100% great. read more

Read the raving reviews and stopped by to try the poke. Definitely not the best on the island, flavor was good but quality of the poke lacked greatly (maybe we just got a bad batch). Poke was not buttery texture, you could feel all tendons and fibers. Sushi was solid! Workers were extremely kind and the store it clean and had lots of great snacks. read more

I've never felt so discriminated by anyone except for when I went to my interview with Annette!!! She made me feel so belittle by making me believe I was hired! Mind you I filled out the hiring packet, went to get a tb test, even ordered my uniform!!!!! Then she told me I couldn't be hired because my piercing! Mind you I was about to get it removed the next day! Then she told me she can't hire me cause she did the hiring wrong but made me feel like it was my problem! And then she told me I couldn't be hired because of my tattoos which could be covered up and then she said I couldn't be hired because of my resume when hunnie I am real and legit !! I really feel it's because I was trans she didn't wanna hire me so here attached is my resume now you tell me what you think and how my gender affects my professional more than qualified resume!!!! Love the convenience store, and the employees. It's a bit pricey, but heck, it you need something it's here. Needless to say we stopped here a couple of times on our last visit, and our visit years back. It definitely serves it's purpose. I agree with Nali, the place is clean. In fact when we were entering the store someone was sweeping outdoors and mopping inside. The staff is very helpful, friendly and the ones helping us that evening were comical. Plenty of snacks, drinks (including an array of beer) and some cooked, local food and desserts. Would love to know you would support this convenient store by bringing in your business. I didn't buy anything here but I wanted to write a review about their customer service. There was a major car accident nearby making the traffic come to a standstill. I was sitting in the car for an hour and a half so I decided to check out the store and also try to use their restroom. Even though there was a sign that said no public restroom available, I thought I would try to reason with them due to the traffic. But the lady was firm and very rude in responding. I pretty much begged to make an exception due to the circumstances but she was unbending. After that I didn't even want to bother with purchasing anything there. read more

Great selection of poke. The man at the counter was really kind and let us sample a couple before we made up our mind with which ones to order. The selection of food and snacks reminds me of a seven eleven but with traditional Hawaiian snacks and meals. We bought a poke bowl and a spam and egg musubi. This general store has excellent customer service. Both the cashier and man at the poke deli counter went above and beyond, serving us with a smile. read more

Stopped in after the beach to buy dog food for some hungry wild beach dogs. It's a much larger store than I thought it was from the parking lot, carrying many essentials and even a small section of fress veggies/fruits. Very helpful and nice workers too. read more

I love this place the Kahlua Pork is perfect so was the rib's, pork lau lau , lomi lomi salmon we had served two ways and both were perfect excellent noodles and mac salad and of course the white rice.. You will notice the locals eat here . they are in a constant hustle mode due the the volume of customers . Favorite poke on the island, flavor wise and price wise. They have the BEST spicy ahi poke, HANDS DOWN. It's light on the mayo so you can actually taste the sriracha and other flavors. Less mayo means it's also actually spicy. Another thing that is great about whalers' poke is that the onions are chopped pretty small so they don't overpower the mix but still add a great onion flavor/crunch. I love raw onion but it gets to be too much when there are huge barely sliced chunks. read more

Poke is meant to be affordable and done well. The store also has other standard necessities, both high-end and generic brands are available. I live in Anahola and come here close to every day, for either a drink or a local plate lunch, ice, etc. They are so sweet there and always in such a good mood. The poke, musubi and kalua pork plate are my favorite. I feel so lucky having this place so close with the best food options! Great stop before heading to the beach for the day. The store has literally just about everything you need in case of emergencies. I wouldn't do normal grocery shopping as it's more expensive, but it's there if you need it which is nice to know. read more

Horrible people!!!!! Had an emergency as in, bleeding everywhere sorry to be vulgar but as a woman when this happens you have to use a restroom ASAP. I explained to the cashier who was a woman and she rudely shooed me away. I understand it was a no public restroom store but this was an emergency and the fact someone couldn't show an ounce of decency or humanity was appalling. This place is for sure horrid. Recommend to not even waste your time, they are the rudest "human beings" I've ever come across! read more

whalers general store, located right off of kuhio highway in anahola on your way north is a great stop for snacks and drinks along the way. the staff is friendly, and they work very hard to keep this store immaculately clean! i can always stop here on my way to and from work and know that i will get great service, and not have to worry about feeling icky or dirty when i leave! read more

Fancy? No. Reasonably priced? Yes. Delicious? Absolutely. I had the shoyu with rice and it was fantastic - and only $7!
