I have been cleaning it myself for years, but as time went by, sludgy dirt built up at the bottom I didn't know how to get rid of, a few rocks fell off the edge, I could not keep up with the work by myself, therefore, asked Ted for rescue operations. We've had a muddy yard and water seepage since we bought the house thirty+ years ago. We finally decided enough was enough and went looking for drainage experts. We found TJB, and we're glad we did. Ted was knowledgeable, friendly, and extremely professional. He recommended installing a system of underground drains and grading the yard so water would be directed away from the house. As others have noted, he sent us a variety of literature describing the techniques he was going to use. As an arborist, he also helped us figure out which of our trees needed to be removed. (TJB doesn't do tree work.) One thing I always watch for is how much the boss trusts his crew. Ted and his son were confident enough not to micromanage their employees. Ted came to our house for a paid consultation about drainage concerns that we had after recently having moved into an older house. What I learned from the overall experience was well worth the nominal fee. He was very thorough as he explained the causes and recommended solutions. He looked at the inside of the basement and garage that is partially under grade and made suggestions to minimize future water incursion, if there would be any after I implemented his recommendations outside. Using what I learned about my situation from Ted, I literally stood out in a raincoat in pouring rain yesterday and diverted the groundwater on one side of my house before I can make the permanent fix that he recommended. Ted inspected an old catch basin on my property while lying face down in the underbrush and brought out his metal detector and sawed part of a fallen tree to get better access to the second catch basin that he found that he and I partially dug out with shovels. I can't say enough good things about my experience with Ted's visit. He was beyond enthusiastic and knowledgeable. If you have a drainage problem, TJB should definitely be your first call. read more

He's extremely honest and knowledgeable, and I would recommend everyone had a consulting appointment with him before a big job - even if you plan to use a different company to do the actual work. He'll help you know if you're getting a fair price and answers any and all questions you have about your home. Ted is amazing. We had a complex problem with excessive drainage onto and under our driveway and garage following what seemed to be the crushing of a drainage pipe during work with heavy equipment (not by TJB). Several people came out and looked but Ted came on a cold, gray early winter day and not only looked but diagnosed parts of the problem on the spot and even before we hired him, he made a couple of quick fixes that helped a bit. He was pleasant, polite, knowledgable, and generous with his time and information. His proposed solution seemed to make more sense than what others proposed, and his price was not the lowest, but it was not even close to the highest. The fix needed to wait until the spring, and he came back this spring and created a swale, regraded the area, and fixed a low spot. He also dug two small drainage ditches and removed a lot very tangled invasive non-native plants. His crew could not have been nicer or more accommodating. No, don't try to rely on this company. An estimate that was very high, a deposit that was taken and no action, no response and finally having to submit a BBB complaint to get any response after more than 2 months. There were other negative reviews of this company too citing lack of work after taking deposits, so these glowing Yelp reviews are probably at least partly phony. Homeowner beware as you are in dangerous territory relying on the smooth talking, deposit pocketing and non-responding TJB. read more

This company is the real deal. We just moved to our Hamden home and within a week realized that our lawn was entirely draining towards our house. Inside an hour we had water leaking into our basement. We called Ted and his son Rob and they came by, assessed the problem, and installed a drainage conduit to our yard. I've waited a few moths to post a review, to make sure that the drain fixed our problem. Tropical storm Elsa came and went and no water in the basement. I contacted TJB for an evaluation of a retaining wall as part of an inspection request from a buyer on a condo I was selling. Ted responded to me right away within just a few hours. He had gone above and beyond by looking up the listing of the property, reviewing the pictures, and evaluating the wall in question at no cost!!! I called Ted about a significant drainage problem in my back yard and was impressed with the scope of his knowledge during our call. He gave me instructions on how to check the water table and then sent me an email detailing the options that might be available. A couple of months went by and I decided to call him again. I was getting quotes in the thousands of dollars from landscaping contractors and was really unsure if the flow drains that they were proposing would be a realistic solution as there was a huge pool of standing water that would not go away. I called him again and asked him if he would come out on a consulting basis and tell me if the proposals that I had would actually work. He came out the following morning and spent two hours with me going over a possible do it yourself solution. He said that flow drain solution that was suggested would only hold about 150 gallons of water and due to the slight tilt in my yard and my two adjacent neighbor's yards were also sloping into a "bowl" where the water was pooling so there would be over 1000 gallons of water that would need to be displaced. Instead, he suggested digging a trench on the back edge of my property as the land there did slope downward a bit and if me and my neighbor were interested in digging a trench through the back edge of our yards that most of the water would then flow down hill. I asked him to go next door with me to explain this to my neighbors as they would have to be involved for his idea to work. He took his time and explained the benefits to my neighbors as they have small children, are outside a lot, and we are all worried about mosquitoes breeding. They were agreeable so we dug the trench and low and behold the water started to drain! I still have to have fill in a "bowl" in my back yard where the water from my house and each of my neighbor's house's pool as it is the lowest area around so I still have work to do. I called him again and he went over the best way to go about leveling the yard (what to buy, where to buy it, etc,). His consultation fee of $125 was the best $125 I have spent! Very knowledgeable on a number of subjects due to his background. Wholeheartedly recommend! read more

He named preferred products, gave advice on general maintenance and upkeep and accurately gauged how much I'm willing to take on myself. He was with me for over an hour explaining the maintenance, the types of plants and trees I have as well as giving me recommendations for the future. I have a complicated yard with lots of possibility that has been neglected for years and is overrun with invasive and unwanted weeds. Feeling overwhelmed by the possibilities and where to start, I called Ted about his consultation service. He said he charges $125, and I get about an hour or so of consultation about my situation. He came out two days later on a rainy Saturday and spent two and a half hours with me just feeding me all sorts of useful ideas and knowledge (and still only charged the flat $125 fee). Super nice guy, wasn't in a rush, recommended the best products for the job and where to buy them, kept suggesting helpful tips on things that caught his eye, and would probably still be standing in the rain with me if l still had questions. Most importantly, he wasn't trying to sell me on anything -- everything he told me was ideas for how I could do it myself. I can't speak to his work, but if it's half as good as his consultation, then I'm sure it will be great. When I bump up against a project that requires a pro, Ted will be my first call. I had previously posted a negative review of this company without knowing all of the facts and that was wrong of me. I have had many negative encounters with contractors in the past and thought I was being blown off as they say. It was quite to the contrary. I received several excellent proposals from Ted, the owner of TJB and he went above and beyond in providing me with different options for our project even though he is in the midst of a family crisis at the moment of which I was not aware. I would highly recommend TJB to anyone looking for a truly professional company that has the knowledge to get whatever project you require done and done well.
