We like the Lincoln Center location better. There is no "fast pass lane". However, it's indoors and no rude people smoking all sorts of stuff and bumping into you in Times Square. For a 7:00PM show on a Tuesday, this booth opened up at 2:00PM so we lined up around 1:30PM and got to the front at about 2:15PM. We paid $208 for two tickets to the show "Beautiful". Arrived at the theater and told we were seated in the front row all the way on the right side. Normally this is ok but our view of the lead star was blocked as she played the piano. The guy selling the tickets just said whatever he wanted to say to move you along fast so he could get to the next victim. How long would you wait in line to save 50% off Broadway show tickets playing the same day? How about in the pouring rain? We were in New York City for the first week in May, and rain forecast for at least 5 of those 7 days. So much for seeing the outside attractions of New York City: the Empire State Building, The Statue of Liberty, Wall Street and Central Park. We made show reservations online for An American in Paris, and Beautiful, but even for nose bleed balcony seats, we were paying $70 a pop, after Ticketmaster surcharges and taxes. Sunday morning it is raining cats and dogs, with rain predicted throughout the day. We walk on over to Times Square to TKTS. It's 10:40am, and there is a line snaking back and forth similar to the Space Mountain line at Disneyland. Security personnel/staff directs us to the end of the line. Looks like one of those TSA lines, only this one is being pelted by a steady rain, with temperatures in the high 40s. There is an electronic scoreboard at the loop of the line near the ticketwindow, and it lists all the available plays and their discounts for the afternoon shows that day. We check the scoreboard and the play Chicago is listed at 50% discount. Some plays like Book of Mormon, Wicked, or Jersey Boys are sold out and not listed. You want to see those shows, you got to go directly to the theater and wait in the same day standing room only section line. Into the line we go. Only nobody is moving. Turns out Sunday the ticket office opens at 11am, not 10am as on other days, for discounts to the afternoon shows . Ticket office closes after noon, and reopens at 3pm for discount tickets to the evening shows. Monday is usually an off day for most shows. Those people without hoodies or umbrellas are soaked to the bone by the rain, including the hapless guy who got soaked when I mistakenly tilted my umbrella downwards for a moment. Sorry about that bro! Conversations with the others in line? I hear French, German, Russian, and several lone males who appear to be locals -anti social types whose social skills are limited to grunts, shrugs and nods. 11am the line starts moving. The line loops back and forth, separated by ropes. We come to the head of the loop, and then to the back of the loop in the next setion. Every time we come to the front, we check the scoreboard. Some shows disappear from the discount list, but Chicago is still there. 1120am, we loop to the head of the loop for one last time. Chicago is still there on the discount scoreboard. 12 ticket windows under a roof ledge to keep out the rain, but only 8 of them are open, and a few are limited to 'plays' only. Reminds me of Costco -they don't necessarily staff all the cashier booths, but make you wait. In our case a 40 minute wait to get to the final ticket lines. I go into the line with the fewest women, reasoning that women tend to socialize and slow down the line, at least in grocery stores. A sign at the window warns that all transactions are final -no refunds. Check your tickets carefully before leaving the window. Guards everywhere to make sure no one jumps the line. I go to the window and ask for 2 tickets for Chicago. The teller, shows us where the seats are located, we agree. Two orchestra seats. My wallet seemingly floats upward from my hand, $164 lighter! Holy S--! It is what it is, as Kobe Bryant would say. Our second choice: Fiddler on the Roof. Chicago is a blast, and exceeds all my expectations. And without being taken to the cleaners again in the big Apple. read more

I have avoided TKTS booths for a long time because (a) the lines look like your entire day would be lost and (b) I want to make sure I have tickets for the show I want to see. However, on this trip, we had planned to see Jersey Boys and there were plenty of tickets available, so we figured even if we couldn't get good or any tickets here - in case they sold out at the booth - we could still jump on our phones or walk over to the box office. As it turns out, we found out it was the last few months of Les Mis, and we had yet to see it on Broadway. So we decided we would just see what TKTS has for both. First thing you should know is that yes, you should get there as early as possible by opening time, and if you want to guarantee the best seats they have, then you should get there well before opening. However, you do not need to. We got there a few minutes after 3 on a Saturday no less. Line was unbelievably long, and after we arrived, kept getting longer. We debated leaving, but decided we'd see how far we got in 15 minutes and make a decision then, and by that point, we were well on our way through to the window. It was surprisingly pleasant how quickly it moved. We were there maybe 35 minutes by the time we go to the window. Second thing is that they do not have access to all available tickets. They are given a block of tickets to certain shows, and they tend to be not the best seats - or at least, if you don't get there well before they open, what will be remaining aren't the best. This is why we were willing to stay: since they didn't have the whole theatre, if we didn't like what they had or they sold out, there were still tickets (good ones) remaining at the box office. Third thing, and this is very important, is they do not have seating charts, and it is for this I am deducting a star. Would it be so hard for each window to keep a binder of theatre seating charts so you can see where you're sitting? No, it wouldn't, but they don't. But, take comfort dear readers in your smart phone. My genius girlfriend thought of pulling up both theatre's seating charts on our phones. So how did it go for us? They had both Jersey Boys and Les Mis tickets for 1/2 off, both orchestra, but all the way on the aisle on the left - literally last 2 seats in the row, so a bad angle. Seats like that might be okay if you're far enough back, and thankfully, the Les Mis seats were 12 rows back or something. The Jersey Boys seats were like 4th row, and from there, you would have trouble seeing anything occurring on the left side of the stage, so we went Les Mis. We both love Les Mis, and naturally, it was superb. The seats, while perhaps not ideal, were fine. There may have been a little we missed on the left - a character or two - but nothing that detracted from the show at all and for 50% off, who really cares. I strongly recommend using TKTS, but I would also recommend making sure you have multiple options available, and if not and you have your heart set on 1 show, then either skip it and buy your tickets in advance, or at least, make sure there are still plenty of seats available on telecharge, ticketmaster, or at the box office, so that if you do strike out, you won't be left without options. read more

To all our Broadway-virgin friends: Go to the play/musical's website and buy your tickets from there. Here are why: - Looooong... looooooooong lines at TKTS booths. I got here half an hour before the opening time and still have to wait an hour in total in a rainy afternoon. When it comes to 50% off tickets, people become very persistent. - Because the opening time of the booth is in the afternoon, they only sell same-day evening tickets, which means your shows will start at 7-8pm. You may get matinee (noontime) of the next day at the booth, but if you have time, why not buy tickets online??? - Off-broadway is minimum $40/ticket, Broadway is minimum $75/ticket. This means that the only seats TKTS have are in the Orchestra area. The view is theoretically nice, but the price tag can be over budget for some people. If you buy your tickets beforehand online, you can choose your seat, choose your hour, and know exactly how much you have to pay. The cheapest Broadway tickets can go as low as $30. Yes, this place is a madhouse, but the key is having a list of shows you know you want to see, suck it up and get on the line early. Super friggin early. Even though they suggest getting on line 45 minutes early before it opens I have been there two hours early. Yes, I am crazy, but with a cup of coffee and a newspaper to read I don't care. It just gives you a better chance to be up front in line and have your choice of show tickets to choose from. I do suggest having a few shows in mind - maybe a top three - so if the tickets for one run out or the seats are not great you can choose the next best option. I've been here three times over the last four years. Whenever I make a trip to New York, I make sure that I see a Broadway show, and what better way to get the best seats and best deals than at TKTS. There are three locations - Brooklyn, Times Square, and South Street Seaport. I would suggest researching which location is the closest to you and to see if you would rather watch the show during the night time or matinee. Only certain ticket booths will sell matinee for either the day of or the next day so research your preferences before you start waiting in line. Every time I go, I check the times the booth opens and go and hour earlier. It's nice to go with someone else in case you have to run back and forth to the bathroom or the stores. (I recommend using Starbucks bathrooms since they're close by and the McDonald's ones are always ridiculously packed). The first time I went in the spring time and watched Sister Act. I sat in the front right area. The seats were pretty good, but I like sitting in the middle better. The second time I watched Newsies, which is such an entertaining musical. We sat in the left front area and they actually just added two regular seats for us, so we didn't even get that great of a view since some structures inside the building blocked us. The third musical I watched was Kinky Boots. I watched this a few weeks ago and they let us sit in the back center orchestra. Overall, they do offer good prices because I always pay about 50% cheaper than the actual listing prices. The seats are not always what you want because they give you what they have based on availability, but I was never disappointed with where I was sitting. Also, all the shows no matter what turn out to be really good so don't be afraid to watch something you know nothing about! On a quick getaway from the Left Coast last week, I missed the current stagehand strike by mere days. I was able to brave the tortuous, snaking line to buy half-price seats to "Xanadu" and "The Color Purple". Not bad considering I was in line for perhaps 45 minutes each before both purchases. While the permanent location at 47th in Times Square has been under renovation for a while, the discount booth is now parked at the Marriott Marquis on 46th. The upside is that you are at least partially covered from the elements since the line makes it way through the passageway between 46th and 47th. What you're not insulated from are all the scalpers yelling about their tickets and the tourists who try to sneak to Junior's while you promise them to save their place in line. Ha! Fat chance! Perhaps because my expectations are low as to what is available by the time I get to the window, I've always been pleased with the shows I get to see as a result. If you're lucky, the person at the window will recommend whether the purchase is worth it based on the view from the seats. Keep in mind that you need cash or that ancient currency of the Reaganomics years, traveler's checks, to make a purchase. No credit cards are accepted. Good prices if you want to wait last minute. My family if 3 got tickets for A Bronx Tale 2 weeks ago. My daughter, who is 7, was a good sport and didn't mind watching this musical even though it was geared for adults. We all three stood in front of the ticket attendant and clearly explained our situation with our little girl. We were lucky the ticket agent was able find 2 excellent seats together and 1 seat nearby(so we thought...). So we figured one adult sit with our daughter and the other alone but nearby. TKTS is a great place to get discounted tickets to shows that have been around Broadway for awhile, or off Broadway shows. Anything that is currently popular, likely will not have tickets for a discount here. They have two signs listing what is available and what the percentage discount is on either side of the ticket windows. I found the line situation to be very confusing....It doesn't seem to be clearly formed and there wasn't much direction from the employees. Other than the line issue, if you are looking for a discounted ticket and don't have a particular show in mind, this is a great resource. read more

Aside from the endless lines of people that crowd Times Square, this TKTS might have a few shows that the South Street Seaport has and MAYBE even cheaper. After all, most of the shows are within walking distance and is not so much of a hassle, especially if its only an hour before show time. Sometimes the tickets are virtually sold for huge discounts to satisfy the need of a sellout crowd on any given night. Big ups for the fact they have expanded in size earlier last year. The previous booth was too small to handle the large crowds and the multi windows now are a nice touch, if not an extremely necessary one. It has now become an area that is a must visit before considering any show. read more
