The best espresso beans I have found in a long time! Better than Lavazza from the supermarket. Better than Starbucks. However, the staff needs to be better educated about the merchandise, because the woman behind the counter didn't know the difference between the two espresso beans they are carrying, so she had to ask someone else there. The Italian roast is stronger than the Portuguese, that's all. But overall this is a great spot with wonderful treats! I'll be back for more. read more

Stayed at the Doubletree Hotel at Penn Station and wanted a fun coffee experience, other than the typical chain. I'm SO GLAD I walked to TM Ward, what a great surprise! The place is charming, has a great history, going back 4 generations! Many pots of different coffees brewing, too many to taste! The place has barrels of beans, all kinds for sale..and it smells outstanding! The service is great, welcoming, and knowledgeable. I found more than what I came for; amazing coffee of course (bought a couple pounds to take home to Oregon with me) and fresh roasted peanuts, but also a family of people working here who love what they do and are passionate about it. No chain place offers this. I'll come back every time I'm in town just to say hello and enjoy great coffee. Absolutely a must visit!! read more

Amazing coffee!!! This is not a cafe. But a place where they sell coffee by the cup or the pound and it is sooo good. Aparently they roast their own. They also roast peanuts and sell them supercheap by the bag. They are awesome! Their house blend is great and for while I was getting it on sale at about $9 for 2 pounds and the bags tend to be a little more than a pound. It really close to the courthouse, so the area is safe. So, I think you get the point that I love this place. read more

My family lived near Newark for all my years growing up, in the 1970's and beyond. That was well before the rebirth of coffee on the east coast. Even then, we had a friend who knew that TM Ward was THE place to buy coffee. For years, we would put our order in with his to buy his personal blend of coffee. Fast forward to this century and I now live in Tampa. I was desperate for good coffee at reasonable prices. TM Ward fits that order perfectly! I've been popping in to TM Ward sporadically over the last 10 years or so. ( it's west of Route 21, I usually stay on the Ironbound side of 21). They have some great tasting coffees and a nice selection of nuts and candies. Definitely prefer giving my business to Ward's over DD or Starbucks. Prices are great too! With Starbucks recently closing some people may think it is time to flee downtown Newark and head to more gentile locals to get a proper coffee fix. But fortunately just a few blocks south is a TM Wards an old school coffee retailer that also servers a variety of caffeinated beverages including standard drip coffee and espresso based drinks. The coffee and espresso are as good as you would get at Starbucks but cost less. Plus they have a great selection of whole bean coffee available I would guess upwards of 50 kinds scattered about the store. I am amazed. I am a long-time Starbucks drinker and goer, and I have also been to my share of "elite" hipster coffee houses, but I was stuck and had to get coffee at my local convenience store in Hoboken -- you know, the pump carafes on the counter. I expected very little, just caffeine. My first taste stunned me -- fresh-tasting, without that nasty "made at home" bitterness. In fact, I preferred it to my daily Starbucks! I think the convenience store also used fresh half-and-half, unlike many places that only use "UHT" (which tastes funky). I guess, as a regional coffee company, anything bought near Newark will be quite fresh, so that must help. But seriously, this may be the best brewed coffee I have ever tasted. And, the company is real and seems to have a real family history -- not a corporate entity with a natural-sounding name but roasted god-knows-where. So, try it! The phone number does not appear on the website. I wonder if that is a requirement of Google Checkout. Anyway... I found a Mexican restaurant in Sunset Park that had wonderful coffee. The owner showed me that it was T. M. Ward's Colombian. I consider it the best coffee I have been served in the 24 years since moving to New York City. It is rich, with a nutty flavor and a great deal of depth. I have to force myself to refuse a third or fourth cup. Drank black, it has a touch of bitterness and acidity - but in a good way. It is not as acidic as Pret's coffees, and nowhere near as bitter as that overly burnt motor oil at Starbucks. If you are familiar with Seattle's Best (the real stuff, not the swill in the carafes at Subway), I would say Ward's Colombian is heading in that direction in terms of nutty flavor, but Ward's is darker and more full of body. It stands up very well to milk, which makes for a very rich but smooth brew. So, at the Mexican brunches I attend, I tend to drink half cup black and then switch to milk for the rest of the meal. At other times I get a large to go and end up drinking the whole thing black. I just ordered a pound of Colombian Excelso and a pound of Colombian Medellin Supremo, because I no longer remember which is used at the restaurant. It is also possible they order dark roast. But I shall know soon enough. They do their own roasting, so you can order whatever coffee you like with light, medium or dark roast, and anything from beans, to drip, to extra fine. I absolutely adore this coffee shop. It's a small place that packs a real punch. The coffee and tea selection is like no other and the owners are really knowledgeable and friendly. I often ask them for recommendations and they always manage to pull something new and tasty out of their sleeve! Also, if you haven't tried their biscotti, drop whatever you're doing and buy some. My personal favorite is the chocolate hazelnut, but you can't go wrong with any of them. They also have a pretty varied selection of gourmet sauces, pastas, and other savory foods. I haven't tried much of the selection, but I know friends who have enjoyed it. My only complaint is that they don't have outdoor seating. In all my 27 years in Newark, I have never heard of TM Ward coffee until a relative introduced me. I normally buy my whole bean coffee from McNultys on Christopher Street or Porto Rico Importing Co on Bleecker, both in NYC. But realizing there ever increasing prices, I did not want to turn to Folger's or Chock Full O'nuts. So I walked into TM Ward, which conveniently is a 5 minute drive from my house in the Ironbound. This place is exactly on par with those NYC locations, and in terms of pricing and quality, it surpasses them!! There are TONS of varieties of coffee, all available in whole bean or ground up fresh to your specification (drip, espresso, etc). They have single batch (Colombian, Sumatra, and Ethiopian being my top three from each of the major growing regions), flavored, and blends (Portuguese Blend is super delightful!). The staff is very courteous! The fresh roasted peanuts are also a great buy! With so many varieties of coffee, I hardly looked at the varieties of nuts, candy, and fresh brewed coffee available for purchase. The only negative is there schedule! They are closed Saturday and Sunday, and close at 4:30 pm on weekdays. Aside from that, this place is amazing. I hope they stay in business for a very long time because I have become a customer for life! I am not a frequent reviewer on Yelp, but this place deserves it! read more

Wards is a life saver. There's no place like it that I know of in Newark. They have pots of hot coffee of all flavors at all times and - my lifeblood - iced coffee year round (jus ask them to make it for you in the winter). They also sell a ridiculously impressive variety of chocolates and nuts, including sugar free chocolates and fresh roasted peanuts for .25! Poke around a little more and you will find dried okra, bee pollen, crystallized ginger, and homemade bean pies. Oh and 20 oz bottles of Poland Spring water is only a buck. Amazing! read more

Came in here for the first time today after living in Newark for the past 10 years. Walked in and was welcomed with the aroma of fresh roasted coffee beans, mm! It's a small little shop but packed with such a vast variety of not only coffee beans, but candies, dried fruit, nuts, and teas as well. It's a little overwhelming at first but the ladies up front were really helpful in helping me select some good coffee. She recommended the Jamaican Me Crazy blend, so I went with a cup of that. Yum! I may or may not be back here every morning from now on. They have a list up of their top 15 blends so I intend on eventually trying them all. I ended up buying a pound of their Colombian and Jamaican Me Crazy for my coffee loving parents :) It would be nice if this place had a little sit down area, but the location makes that not such a good idea. I still get TM Ward's coffee sent to me in Maine after first discovering it in Newark, NJ. I still think it's the best I've ever had. My one complaint is that my last order came packed with crumbly styrofoam peanuts. They were the cheapest type and the miniscule bits flew everywhere as I unpacked the coffee then with static, they stuck to everything in sight including my clothes and hair. This careless handling of my order is very disappointing, after I have been a customer for 10 years. I can't reuse the styro--I would not send it to anyone else--and my town dump hates it. So where does it go? Into the trash, read earth, for a million years. Very un-green and irresposnible! Most importantly, this packaging material should never be used to pack food. Those tiny pieces of styro can easily get into the coffee. Even today, taking a pound bag from the freezer, I found some. I don't think it's any fault of Nidira or the crew at the Newark shop. They're great. They have to use what they are given for packing. I think the owners should take responsibility and upgrade to better quality peanuts or crunched brown recycled paper. And they also might consider nice bonuses for longtime customers. Even CVS sends me a $3. Birthday gift card. Ten years is alot of loyalty. So bottom line, TM Ward is great coffee but they need to improve their dedication to being Green and also improve their customer relations. read more
