Robbed!! I have been going to optometrists annually for 35 years and I can say without a doubt that Larry is the LEAST competent optometrist I have met. The office is a disorganized mess of contact lenses and glasses spilling out of boxes. He doesn't seem to have any idea what he has in stock. After my exam and settling on a brand of contact lens I had to contact him repeatedly to get the order put in. Once the order was in I had to contact him repeatedly to see if the contacts had arrived at his shop. After the contacts arrived (a full two months after my exam) I opened the box and they were the WRONG contacts. Normally that would be OK because one could simply exchange them. However, due to Larry's poor relationship with the supplier he could not or would not exchange them. He left me holding the bag. The contacts I received are no good to me. In my opinion he should have had the decency to provide the CORRECT contacts at his expense, as his own DISORGANIZATION and CARELESSNESS are to blame for the mistake. While I agree that Larry is a personable guy, as other reviewers state, he appears to have absolutely no desire to satisfy his customers. Clearly, Larry he does not value his customers... at least not me. I thought I was doing a good thing by going to a local business. I hope nobody has to have the experience I had. Look for another independent business to patronize. Keep Seattle great. read more

Dr. Toda is the best. A few years ago my eye doctor of 20 years retired and I randomly found Dr. Toda. I'm so glad I did. He has a very warm old school feel to his practice that is very welcome in this cold computerized age we live in. read more

I recently went to Dr. Toda to have lenses replaced in a frame that I liked. I went to the original Dr. That had them made and they wanted $419.00 to replace the lenses. I also wanted glass lenses because sometimes I use chemicals in my work and had smudged the plastic lenses with the chemical sightly melting the plastic. Dr. Toda is one of a very few that will help you get glass lenses. Glass lenses are far superior to plastic. Is plastic "glass" used in telescopes, microscopes, or binoculars? Why is it used in glasses? Glass is more scratch resistant as well. I had my new lenses in two weeks. I also saved over $300.00. My family has been going to Dr. Toda and his father previously ever since we needed glasses. He tries his best to fit you in if you have an emergency. Takes his time to help you find the right pair of glasses. He has been a life saver when I had an ulcer on my eye twice!?! It was SO painful, but he fit me in. He explained what happened or how I may have been exposed so when I had the same symptoms I knew where I needed to go. Very knowledgable and friendly. read more

My experience with Larry Toda's business occurred almost two years ago now, but I still think back about it and think "I cannot believe that happened!". I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, especially really, really nice people like Toda. He was so nice but I also hate it when people in vulnerable financial situations are put in these situations so... I have AppleHealth and through that, get one visit to an optometrist a year. I had also been in Peace Corps the years before and was in desperate need of new contacts and glasses. I went in and was impressed by Toda's niceness (see above), if not a little turned off by his scattered office. He fit me for contacts using some contact machine I'd never seen before, and convinced me to buy glasses through his office that were pretty cheap through my insurance. He told me that he would call me when my trial contacts were ready to try them out so he could order the rest (he wanted to order ones that I hadn't used before & didn't have a trial in my prescription his office). A few weeks later the trial contacts came in and I went in to try them out. In the meantime, I'd moved from the Central District to SandPoint neighborhood, and didn't have a car so it was a good hour+ bus ride. Anyway, we got the new contacts in my eyes and they were completely blurry, worse than my normal vision. He asked if it would "work well enough", and I couldn't say yes, even with his niceness. So he tried fitting me again with the machine and told me he would call me when my next trial order came in. I told him it would be difficult for me to get there and he said "we could figure something out". I left, and never heard from him again. I tried calling his office several times, but as other reviewers have pointed out, he doesn't have an administrative assistance OR voicemail. Luckily, there is a law that if a contact distributor doesn't hear back from the optometrist within a certain period, they can send you your contacts anyway. So I just used my prescription from 3 years previous and used 1-800-Contacts. I never got the glasses that I'd already paid for, and that used up my yearly appointment. :( He is really nice though! read more

Not only is Dr. Toda a very competent optometrist (no wonder, since he comes from a large family of them!), but he is extremely personable and a great story-teller. I felt immediately comfortable as he examined both my and my daughter's eyes, and plan to go back to him for my future exams and eyewear. Dr. TODA does a very good job with he exams. He make sure you have the correct vision and your glasses and contacts fit right. He took good care of me, I can really see. I was wondering why I was getting tired driving, cause he said I was straining to see. I recieved my glasses within 2 1/2 weeks. I recommend Dr. Toda. I used to see his dad for my eyes. read more

The good: Dr. Toda does have a good chair side manner and from what I can tell is a pretty competent optometrist who fit me with good contact lens. The bad: Dr. Toda has been absolutely horrible with customer service. First, he has no support staff so its very hard to check on things that you have ordered through his office. Two, he makes no effort to call you about whether your contacts are in or glasses are ready. I called for two straight weeks everyday and I got no answer. I finally had to go to his office in person to find out he he was not in even though he left no message on his phone indicating he was gone. Once I did get a hold of him, he faked as if he had ordered my contacts three weeks ago when in reality he just forgot. I really would not recommend Dr. Toda if you are someone that expects your optometrist to follow up with you and give you some respectful service. Its been over a month since I had my exams and he still has not produced any contacts for me. If you do go to him, make sure you just go and get the prescription ASAP and order your contacts or glasses somewhere else. read more

Dr. Toda caters to a special bunch of people. I don't consider myself one of them. He was very pleasant to work with, and appeared to be quite knowledgeable. He strikes me as a technophobe though: no computer, no other visible technology, not even call waiting (yep heard a busy signal in 2013 for the first time in around 10 years.) I'm willing to go analog where appropriate, like when my jeweler recently helped me select a new watchband using a paper catalog, wrote it down on paper, then ordered it electronically. Dr. Toda's follow-up was also weak. My eyeglasses were back-ordered, but I found out only because I called to inquire about the delay. I was not offered the choice to wait or select something else. Then I had to call two more times, the second to find out the glasses arrived two days earlier (without any notice from Dr. Toda.) Perhaps his very low overhead is why he his inexpensive, based on reviews I read elsewhere and the fact that he's in-network with my cheapo insurance, United Healthcare Vision. So if you're looking for a nice old country doctor and are in no hurry, you'll probably like him. But the pace of my life is a bit fast for Dr. Toda. read more

Dr. Toda is a kind man, I will not disagree with that. During the exam, he is focused on his patient and is open to discussing your eyes with you. He does give samples to try. So why 2 stars? I find that none of that matters if you can't actually GET the prescribed corrective lenses. He lacks organization, gets really frazzled by phone calls and does not follow up with patients. My appointment with him was in November. It's January and I am still getting "Call back on Tuesday" and that is when he answers the phone. Frankly, I don't have time to call multiple times a week to find after a month of this that he has yet to place the order. I would say that Dr. Toda needs an assistant and this review could be on the other end of the spectrum. read more

Dr. Toda rocks. He is knowledgeable and nice. I used to visit an optometrist on First Hill and yes that doctor's office was newer and shinier, but I felt like just a number there. I feel like Dr. Toda really cares about my health and well being rather than just seeing me as his ticket to a new Mercedes. His office is old fashioned in a good way.
