I had a disappointing and unprofessional experience at Hawaiian Islands Dermatology. I scheduled an…read moreappointment for a routine skin cancer/body scan and the removal of two small skin tags, but the physician assistant barely addressed my actual concerns. Instead, he speculated--without any medical basis--that my skin tags were a sign of insulin resistance and prediabetes, despite my recent lab work being completely normal. Things only got worse from there. He claimed I had "30 or more" skin tags on my neck--an absurd exaggeration, considering I actually had maybe three small ones. I can only assume this was so he could bill insurance for an unnecessary procedure. He also insisted that I needed to buy a numbing cream because, if I came back, I wouldn't be able to "withstand the pain" of removing them. It felt like nothing more than a scare tactic to push unnecessary products. On top of that, he asked completely irrelevant and inappropriate questions about my marriage and insurance while going on a tangent about politics. Rather than providing competent medical care, most of the appointment felt like a sales pitch for cosmetic treatments. He even claimed to "treat" celiac disease, which is not something that requires treatment beyond a gluten-free diet. Fast forward--I quickly realized I was not in capable hands and made an appointment with Hawaii Dermatology and Plastic Surgery Center to see an actual board-certified dermatologist. The difference was night and day. My new doctor was precise, professional, and efficient. They completed the body scan, easily removed a few skin tags--without pushing unnecessary numbing creams or upselling treatments--and the experience was everything a medical visit should be. Do yourself a favor--avoid this place and see a real dermatologist.

Unfortunately, not the first (or second or third) time that this is happened. I got a call that they had to reschedule my appt after waiting for several months for it to come, but they would call me back. Two weeks later, no call. I finally call and now there isn't an appt. for 5 months from now. The staff is the most unprofessional I've ever dealt with, on multiple occasions. It's really too bad because really liked my Dr., but am now going to have to change. Do better. Dr. Friedlander, you are losing patients because of your staff.

Wildly unprofessional, passing blame to others, talking over me, not asking good questions, not following up, speaking rudely at me, etc. After a real nightmare experience, to put it politely, Multiple sections within the women's health center that do not communicate between themselves. No returned phone calls as promised. Blaming other offices, no follow up, nobody puts in any effort to try and help people frustrated by their poor customer service. I just wanted to schedule a first appointment with a referral. After 3 months, endless hold time, no call backs, bad info given repeatedly, not listening, talking over me, etc, I gave up. Highly recommend avoiding this office if you don't want them to blame your doctor for their mistakes.

When I first moved out to Kailua, I think the combination of the move, school, work, etc. took a…read moretoll on me more than I'd like to admit. However, since I'm the type of person that tends to internalize my stress, my body decided to react in other ways, specifically in these rash-type lesions on my hands and wrists that looked absolutely raw (and were painful beyond relief). Initially, my mother-in-law, who's a nurse believed I might have developed psoriasis, so recommended Dr. Huntley since he had helped my husband and his sister with their dermatology issues. I wasn't sure what to expect or how to prep since I'd never previously seen a dermatologist and while I suffered from acne in my teens, it was nothing too severe that warranted a visit. However, Dr. Huntley was informative and kind, if a little stern, but otherwise helpful with my skin concerns. Apparently, what I had was not psoriasis but eczema and he had prescribed steroid cream to aid in hydration and healing. My eczema has been well controlled since and fortunately, perhaps due to age, I've gotten better at managing my stress and anxiety. Overall, if you're looking for a good dermatologist on the Windward side and aren't sure where to look, I'd highly recommend Dr. Huntley as he is quick, efficient, and not one to beat around the bush--long story short, my husband still has a grudge against Dr. Huntley since when he had visited as a teen, the doc had told him that the reason he had such bad acne was that he was fat LOL. Fortunately, my visit bore no such interaction and my eczema was well managed thereafter. I still get a good laugh every time I think about my husband in his teens interacting with Dr. Huntley.

I left pretty pissed and defeated because I took such care and nursed it for so long but it seemed like for nothing now. So I called dr. Huntley's office for a second opinion plus I feel this is more his field then my PCP. The front desk at both offices are amazingly nice and welcoming. I was worried when I first saw dr Huntley because he is older so I thought he would just tell me to take the damn thing out like my PCP did. Anyways he knew exactly what it was and said he doesn't thing think I need to take the meds the doc gave me. He did remove the bump and put some ointment to prevent infection. He also took a culture just in case their was an infection which gave me the piece of mind I needed. Dr. Huntley felt confident that my nose will heal nicely and my nose ring can stay in :). I trust him not because he told me what I wanted to hear its because he really knows what he's doing. He's also a really sweet man and even removed some annoying skin tags. I just made another appointment to see what he can do for my acne scars. Give him a try, he really is a great dermatologist.
