The work ended up being more complicated than expected, with a cut into the wall, and pipes to remove the stuck cartridge (20+ years of corrosion). He ran out to get the additional parts, finished the project pretty quickly, with everything functioning well. However, the backing plate was placed upside down, with weep hole facing up, and chalking not finished. We were able to do the finishing details ourselves to avoid water intrusion.
