Awesome Japanese market, tons of things you wouldn't find anywhere else, including teas, sauces, desserts, beverages, etc. They even have a small section with various anime/japan merch before the exit along with some crane machines and games. The bathrooms are pretty clean and most of the prices are pretty reasonable. I do feel like some of the daily made food is a bit overpriced, but after 7pm, they do offer discounts. I do feel that the ambiance offers something very different than other markets as the store is usually decorated and generally feels clean, although it used to feel cleaner in the past prior to 2020. Always love visiting here from time to time, especially to get some sake. The size of this Tokyo Central is also a bit bigger than most others, but I do feel like other TC's are more modern and cleaner than this one, but you still can't go wrong here. Edit: I went today because I was in the area and the store feels much cleaner and they added a brand new sushi bar with a chef where the old anime stuff used to be. This Tokyo Central is larger and better thank most of their other locations! Great supplies of all things Japanese; especially food! My favorite #1: Their eggs have golden yellow yolks, which you won't find in most supermarkets. My favorite #2: their baked teriyaki eels; you can make Eel Rice for the a small family with one package, usually between $25-35 but sometimes on sale for under $20. My favorite #3: their thick sliced bread (厚片土司) - each slice is about twice as thick as ordinary sliced break; very gratifying when they pop out of the toaster! This is my fifth Tokyo Central (TC) store I've been to in Southern California. It has all the essential groceries you would find at any other TC location: meats, seafood, produce, snacks, kitchen cookware, etc. But...This location carried a lot more merchandise, like beauty products, tote bags, and other cute things. Also grocery and refrigerated items I hadn't seen before. This location is very clean, lots of fresh bento boxes for your choosing. They have a good frozen section and many pantry items. Prices are pretty much the same as other locations. My only experience that was blah was the cashier. She was an older lady with glasses and she seemed impatient and hurried me to move my items towards her on the belt. There was only one other person behind me, so I didn't understand the rush. But it did come off slightly unfriendly. Otherwise, it was an as expected store. Lots of parking also in their lot. read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review for Tokyo Central yet, though I've stopped by here dozens of times - my go to is their sushi tray options! They have the BEST tasting salmon sushi/sashimi all around, at this price point, even better salmon quality compared to nearby sushi restaurants in my opinion. (Our Japanese native friend also agrees.) Best part is - 20% off after 7 pm!!!! But the trays get snatched up quickly. Too bad I'm not around the area at that time, otherwise I'd make Tokyo Central my weekly run for dinner. Their Kimchi Tako Poke is another regular we get, it's so good. However, recently, the only option I saw was the Shoyu Tako Poke - and I didn't like this version one bit - too hard and the flavor is not to my liking. Will never get it again. The hot food area has quite a decent selection, priced and weight by the pound, self-served. Often around 3-4pm, you may see 20% discounted packaged hot food placed out, whatever that's leftover from the lunch rush hour. Tried it a few times, but felt most of the food is heavily dosed in MSG, so I'd be selective on what I get. They also have sashimi party trays which require pre-order. Great pricing for the quality and convenience. Overall, love their sushi selection, and it's a regular stop for us. As for the market itself, there's not as much to buy, and pricing is on the higher end. However, they have a larger selection of some products that I can't find elsewhere, and sometimes their advertised specials are decently priced. read more

This sore is so much more than the former Marukai at the same location. merchandise are shelfed higher and more displays are available to promote their prepared foods and new merchandise. Came today with my daughter to get all her favorites to cook this week while she's home. Love the produce section --the Asian pears are always good here, and the ginger. I appreciate the dining area partitioned off to the side for people to eat the buffet style cooked food right away. My daughter likes their sautéed green beans, grilled mackerel and fried noodles. My husband likes their sautéed unagi eel on rice. I like the tuna and salmon sushi. They always have enough cashier lanes open. If you buy food to eat there, ask for utensils from the cashier. The store aisles are a bit narrow, so you have to take turns slowly so you don't collide with other carts, but it is well organized and clean. The staff are helpful and polite. read more

Asian snack heaven! I came here to pick up a couple of items to make Spam masubi for my kids but I left with a whole cart full of goodies. And, I'll definitely be back. I wish I hadn't just had lunch before I came. Their selection of grocery items for Japanese, Chinese, and even some Hawaiian items was great. I do wish they carried some Vietnamese staples too, like fish sauce, so I didn't have to go to two stores but I know it's called "Tokyo Central" so I shouldn't expect that. It would just be nice. I loved that there is a fresh sushi and sashimi area, bakery, and deli, so you can pick up prepared foods. There's also a great seating area to enjoy your goodies on the spot. It has a bunch of cool items and a hot food bar. It all looked great I got a waygu slider, meat croquette and Yukon fries. There isn't anywhere to eat inside so I ate in my car. Unfortunately none of the food was warm and I was very quick to leave. I also wanted to buy vanilla coolish but they were out of individual packs so I had to buy half vanilla and half chocolate. Tokyo Central is a go to Asian supermarket for us for many reasons. This supermarket has so much to offer. The parking lot can get packed throughout the day. The supermarket is generally clean and they have security guards there during business hours. During lunch hours, they have a hot food section to make you own lunch. You can grab a box to fill it up and weight it at the cash register. They also have a selection of grab and go lunch entrees, such as beef bowls, curry bowls and sashimi salads. They offer ready made sandwiches, sushi rolls, onigiri, and many others items. Tokyo Central offers a big section to have lunch with 10+ tables for any one wanting to eat inside the market. PRO TIP: If you come by around 7-7:30PM, all the ready made food as I mentioned above are priced at 20% off! This is a great time to stock up and grab you favorite items. Also the hot food sections has packed containers to sell after hours. Most of the time, this hour at Tokyo Central gets packed as everyone wants to grab the discounted items. Whether we come here to eat or grab some groceries and cool snacks/drinks we enjoy dropping by from time to time. Lately, we purchase their sashimi grade salmon to make our own poke and we love their affordable priced meats for grilling. We're lucky to have this location not too far from home. read more

Came in on a Thursday around 1:30pm. Love love love this market. When we lived down here this location and the gardena (original) locations were a regular stop. Always wander around to see what offerings are available. Love the 10.99 per pound "buffet" The karaage chicken is a favorite along with the noodle dishes and tried the curry fried rice for the first time (yum) the employees are helpful here. I usually let things slide these days, but this time I thought I'd leave a review about the young cashier with long curly hair. Every time I shop here, I try to avoid him. I had no choice this time since he was the only one working the line, which had very few people -- shocker. He doesn't offer chopsticks, wasabi, or, in our case yesterday, a brown paper bag even though we bought a lot of stuff. He also has a heavy attitude and makes comments that rub me the wrong way. A great Japanese grocery store that I always find myself coming to not only for groceries, but for lunch! I usually come here for lunch as there are great ready-to-go options for sushi and rice dishes. My regular selections include the bluefin tuna bowl, seared scallop nigiri, seared salmon nigiri, handrolls, egg sandwich, real crab California roll, and much more. For the quality and price of the sushi, it definitely competes with going to a Japanese restaurant. Sometimes, I prefer eating here and their dining section rather than going to an actual restaurant. Also, don't overlook their hot food section when they have it available. It's buffet style but they do charge $10.99/lb of food. They have a pretty good variety of food available to choose from. The cheese tonkotsu, umami karage, and the curry fried rice are some of my favorite. The service from the staff are what you expect from a grocery store. They'll answer any questions that you may have about finding anything from the grocery store. You can find anything you really need from the grocery section with an emphasis on Japanese cuisine and kitchen appliances. The dining area that they have available is very clean and is well maintained. There's plenty of seating available for groups and single diners, but if the place is busy during a time like lunch rush; finding a spot to sit may be challenging! I will say that I am glad I decided to bring up the whole incident with the rude female security guard to the main Tokyo Central customer service hotline. I am a long customer of Tokyo Central and have patronized their stores across LA and OC. West Covina one has always been less than stellar experience in the service area but their store carries all the goods. It is just that the treatment that day was unacceptable. After the phone calls and complaints, I see the main office seems to have implemented the suggestion to either have a staff politely handing the cart to their customers OR put a clear signage at the front of the store that a cart/ basket is a must use when you enter the facility. And carrying an item by hand to the cashier (instead of putting it into the cart) is unacceptable. As long as the signage is there, it is a fair game. But, that last incident the signage was not there. NO one telling us the rule and the security guard out of nowhere yelling and pointing at us was NOT the proper etiquette of service. I am glad to see that the signage is placed in front of the door and the same security guard has at least no longer trying to act like she is the queen of the place. She even now wear mask to protect her identity from being called out again. So Kudos for Tokyo central to actually listen to your customer complaints and rectifies the situation. read more

I'm actually pretty happy that there's a Tokyo central that opened near us so we don't have to drive all the way to Gardena for this market. It's a cute market located in a very large plaza. There's so many affordable selections to choose from such as fresh seafood, already made food, marinaded meats, gifts, cards, houseware, facial products, Hawaiian snacks, chocolate, and much more. There were several vegan options available you just need to know where to look. The tofu spring rolls , snacks , veggies, fruits, dumplings, and much more. They had a promotion going on where you match your ID number for Your membership and you may win a prize. My last digit matched so I got a candy. Took a while by the customer service employee figured out how to give the prize to the person in front of me who won $10 gift card to Tokyo central for having the last two digits of the membership match the winning number. It's just confusing because the cashiers don't scan the barcode so I'm guessing no reward points and everyone even non members gets the special membership pricing. There's a variety of food that you can get at this Tokyo Central! In addition, Tokyo Central is like the sister store of Don Quijote! I got a Torpedo sandwich, which is the most popular sandwich! With it being a little later in the day, I got it for 20% off and it was super filling! I like that there's a seating area to sit and eat, but note that it's for a time limit! There's also a little water station to grab some water as well! The service is good and the workers are nice! Definitely recommend to come here and especially later for discounts! They also have a little section in Tokyo Central that has anime/character/fandom section to get little Knick knacks! I recently went to Japan and this store surprisingly has a lot of similar things from Onigiri to cute cellphone covers to Miffy items to yummy snacks! First time here, was super excited to see the selection of food and groceries here. Purchased frozen yakisoba noodles. When I opened the bag, I was hit with the most fowl rancid smell. They sold me food that had gone bad and was frozen solid. Meaning that the food had been left out to spoil then refroze it. I didn't even take a photo since I rushed it into the trash outside. One of my favorite markets to go to because they have so many fresh sushi options. They also have a hot food option during lunch time. It's self serve so you get a box and get whatever you want and it is priced at $10.99/lb. They have a scale so you can check how much you are getting. They have grilled mackerel, tempura, agedashi tofu, chicken, ribs, and more. I haven't tried it yet but they all look good and fresh and I always see a lot of people getting their hot food items whenever I am here during lunch time on a Saturday. I like getting their prepackaged sushi and their rice balls. They are always pretty fresh and decently priced. If you go after 7pm, they are usually 20% off but there might not be a lot of options. If you come around 10:30am, there will be a lot more options. They also have sandwiches and mochis. They have a small bakery next to the sushi/hot food items area as well. They have a good variety of snacks and Japanese hair and skincare. I like getting udon and Japanese seasonings from here since they are affordable. They also have other Asian items that are not Japanese and a few Hawaiian products too.
