Shrimp Shrimp yaki udon and spicy combo

I got the shrimp yaki udon which was good! A bit overpriced in my opinion. I would recommend this place but my friend got food poisoning from the spicy combo. I tried some of hers and felt fine so take that as you will!

Don't let the outside of this place fool you. This restaurant is in a house that looks run down on the outside, but it is super cool and clean on the inside. The teriyaki chicken and shrimp had a good flavor without being too sweet. The chicken was a little too tough but the shrimp were cooked right, along with the veggies.

Stopped in on a Saturday night for a late dinner before a comedy show. This restaurant is in a converted house and has a nice atmosphere. I found street parking right out front. The sushi is 5 stars: excellent quality. And extremely reasonably priced. The service was 3 stars. Not particularly friendly (didn't check on me once after I ordered, didn't offer water, etc) Another server noticed I hadn't been checked on and took over/was much more attentive but also had other tables. Maybe I caught my server on a bad night, it happens. I'd still go back, the sushi was excellent, I'd just maybe do carry-out next time.

If I could rate this a 4.5 I would. It was very good. I may have finally found my go-to sushi place in town. I tried some nearer to our house but for a variety of reasons they just did not do it for me. After checking reviews we decided to try this place on a weeknight. We got there relatively early and we were glad we did because all of the booths quickly filled up by 6pm. The decor was light and modern. Our order was taken quickly and the food came out fast. I got a beer and three cooked sushi rolls. The spicy California roll was good but not really spicy, a smoked salmon roll was also good but the cream cheese was almost too much, and the tempura shrimp roll was excellent. My wife got the vegetable bento box and really liked it a lot. One of the big plusses was that the prices were very reasonable - a rarity these days. We will return.

Lunch special - shrimp tempura, spicy salmon, California roll

I had lunch from here on a weekday. The place was not busy. I went for the lunch special with 3 sushi rolls. It came with miso soup. Spicy salmon was my favorite sushi followed by shrimp tempura. California roll was ok. I noticed others ordering all sushi starting with the word "spicy". I think that is the right strategy. All their spicy shushis should be the best ones. I wish I knew this before.

Food - authentic, well made, lots of flavor. Raw sushi rolls have fresh fish, clean. Cooked sushi rolls also excellent. Here is everything we had and couldn't recommend more: - shrimp yakisoba - queen roll - miso soup - black pearl roll (too much mayo for my taste) - gordon ocean roll - alaskan roll (best I've had w/the most avocado) - eel roll - salmon fried rice (salmon cooked perfectly) - dessert: fried cheesecake - very good! Ambiance: Very homey and cozy. I was a bit shocked when we came upon the restaurant because it looks like a house. They get a lot of business so expect to wait if you don't have a reservation. Seats could be more comfortable. Booth seats pretty shallow. Bathrooms were clean. Service: Understaffed it seemed but they tried the best they could. Very kind and thoughtful.

Hands down best sushi in Madison! This restaurant is super cute and located in an old house on Willy street. Tons of seating indoor and outdoors and it's always spotless. Street parking is fairly easy to find in the area as well. Their vegetarian sushi is seriously my favorite and is always so so delicious. Staff are super sweet and attentive and I'm just constantly dreaming about eating at this place again

Cute little restaurant. Went on a Thursday for lunch early afternoon. Seated in the bar area. Had their lunch special - California roll with two pieces each of tuna and salmon sushi. I also ordered their gyoza which was fried not pan fried. Arrived hot and had a good flavor. The roll and sushi were very good. Service was fast and efficient.

Tsunami Roll, tuna avocado, tuna roll

Went here after a recommendation on a Madison food group based on the quality of the fish, and it didn't disappoint. Excellent rolls especially for the price. The staff is also very friendly! It's been empty every time we go to get carry out, which I don't understand because it's very good and cute. Highly recommend!

We were able to reserve a table of 8 to have dinner with the family. Cute little place that we stumbled upon. Ordered the love boat for all of us to share. My husband and I got the full moon roll, chicken & beef habachi, seaweed salad and age tofu. All were delicious. The rolls didn't have a lot of rice which I like! The habachi came in a hot plate - sizzling hot! The love boat was perfect for all of us to share. The server was nice and service was fast.

Is it house or a superb sushi place? The answer is yes. Housed in a literal house Tokyo Sushi is as homey as I could expect a sushi place to be. The staff was so kind and diligent and since we came at 2:30 on a Sunday, we were basically Home Alone! This place is great value for great quality. The sushi was superb! Wonderfully fresh and filling. I came on my birthday and was very kindly gifted me this fried cheesecake which was so delicious! This'll be a new go to sushi place for me. TLDR: It's cozy and it's sushi.

Give her a raise! So helpful and so nice! We started with the seaweed salad, it was a small portion for three people to share, I recommend one or two people should order it. It was delicious and really hit the spot. My drink, one basil after another, was DELICIOUS! I will definitely be coming back for happy hour and getting that again. I also tried my friends rose water lycheetini which was very tasty as well. The basil drink was a bit booze-ier than the other which I liked. For our main courses we ordered the spider roll, negihama roll, and the salmon roll which I would rank in that order. The spider roll was so salty and yummy. The negihama was so fresh and flavorful. The salmon roll was good but nothing to write home about.

After seeing a YouTube video with a master Japanese sushi chef trying American-style sushi, a new…read morephrase entered my lexicon: "Mayonnaise Roll." Regrettably, I will encounter one during my visit. More on that later. I started off with a Mojo Mojito (N/A). Big points for noticeable mint notes, something which was forgotten in two I had previously (in different spots). That said, it was a little sweeter than I prefer, but this is a matter of taste. For my app, I ordered the OG Pork Buns. These were great! The buns were soft, and the pork was tender and well balanced in terms of ratio of meaty to fatty. It was also sauced the perfect amount, and had a great amount of cucumber for freshness. While I can't put it in the S-Tier, I will easily give it a B, maybe an A if I am in a good mood. The only changes I would prefer (also personal preference) is a little acid for brightness, and a shift towards the fatty end of the ratio. Then we arrive at the fated Sunset Salmon Roll. On the surface, it promises to be a roll to remember: two kinds of fish, three kinds of veggie (including jalapeño), tobiko, and mayo. Instead, anything the roll tried to do was lost as the balance was way off. The quantity of rice was such that it seemed as though the rice was the main event, and everything else was cast as "Waiter #3." To make matters worse, the Yuzu mayo was very strong, further shifting focus away from the fish and veg. Thus, we arrive at "rice and mayo roll." When asked how I was liking things, and I communicated as much, the bar-server offered to change it to something else (thank you very much). That something else was two sets of Nigiri: Unagi & Seared Tuna (Bincho Maguro Tataki). For the Unagi, this was perfect with no notes. The eel was cooked and sauced perfectly, and the balance of rice to protein was ideal. Good job. I can't say the same for the Seared Tuna. The kiss of fire can elevate a piece to otherworldly levels, but only if done correctly. Here, the flame seemed to be applied as an afterthought, and added nothing of value to the fish. The only thing it did was take away some of that amazing freshness sushi-grade fish has by partially cooking it. Any smokey and roasty notes were not in the building. Final verdict: Tavernakaya got off to a promising start with a great virgin Mojito and pork buns. However, it faltered severely when it came to sushi. While the Unagi Nigiri was a strong contender, the Sunset Salmon Roll and Seared Tuna Nigiri were poorly executed. Thus, while I am not against trying their ramen on a later day, I'll likely steer clear of the sushi side of the menu.

She was very careful about our allergy concerns and made sure to take care of us (my daughter has a severe fish allergy and needed her ramen free of fish cake & sauce). The Thai boba tea was delicious, too. I discovered that I prefer Thai ice tea better without boba, but I really enjoyed it in this form, as well. I enjoyed the clean and comfortable atmosphere. For an appetizer, I had the gyoza, and it was perfect. Evenly fried and steamed, even if it was just frozen stuff from the bag like at the Japanese restaurant I used to work at, it was at least prepared with skill. My main entree was the garlic miso ramen. And while each component worked on its own, all of them put together made it seem less as a whole. My biggest issues were the chashu pork which came out a little overcooked. I know the reason, and probably shouldn't hold it against them, but it reminded me a bit of the overcooked pork of my childhood. The other issue was the broth. It was sweet on the backend, which really didn't do it for me the more I've thought about it. I'm not sure if it was the pork broth or the tare. My suspicion lies heavier towards the tare than the broth, but I could be wrong. Either way, I felt that such noticeable sweetness was out of place especially since it did too much to counter the garlic flavor. I suspect it was there to do that for those who don't like a heavy garlic flavor, but then again, if you don't like garlic flavor, you shouldn't be ordering something labeled as garlic on the menu. I will say that marinating the egg was a nice touch and gave it a depth of flavor that typically isn't there from other ramen places I've tried. Otherwise, it was good overall, it just felt like it didn't completely come together with the sweetness of the broth and the pork being a tad overcooked. Still, despite perhaps not looking like it, Zen Ramen was a solid little ramen shop on the East Side and I would not oppose going back to try some of their other ramen bowls. It might not blow your mind if you're a regular ramen connoisseur, but is still a solid spot if you want something affordable and unpretentious.

I went on a weekday lunch, so there was no wait--only one other customer when I arrived. I ordered the pork belly tonkotsu ramen because I prefer a creamy, richer broth. I almost went for the spicy crab, but since it included ground pork, I switched. My food came out in about ten minutes, which wasn't too bad. The broth was flavorful and rich, though I wish it had been served a little hotter. Portion size was generous, and I especially appreciated the bamboo shoots and perfectly soft-boiled egg. Overall, I was in and out in about 30 minutes. The quality was good, though prices are on the higher side at about $15 per bowl.
