Haven't been here since it was an Albertson's. Had an hour to burn decide to check out the options. There's a good selection of everything. Tom Thumbs is like a Kroger's. There's also a good selection of meats. Will definitely come back to get some for a cookout. Store is clean and organized. Lacking a bit on the customer service. I walked around for about 30 min and not once did I see anyone ask anybody for assistance. As I walked out I saw many employees talking to each other also by the entrance/exit door, the two employees there sanitizing the shopping cart at least when I walked in and out they didn't acknowledge the customers. Greeting and thanking a customer goes a long way. Remember the 10 foot rule. If a customer is within 10 feet you will acknowledge the customer. Believe me a customer will appreciate it. Another thing customers would appreciate is saving them time. Just some simply advise to separate Tom Thumbs from a Walmart type store. read more

Came here for the first time -- just stopping by to grab a snack before a meeting. The crackers I bought were all broken inside, stale, and expired by over a month (didn't check until after the fact). I am so sad to give this store one star. Every time I have been there over the past six months I have come home with at least one item that is past expiration. Both fresh and pantry items. This time the item wasn't expired but it was spoiled. It makes me sad because the staff there is amazing. It's becoming a safety concern at this point. I'm so happy they brought Tom Thumb back to McKinney! This location was previously an Albertsons. The re-model looks great! Win, win, win! I was prepping for a brunch this past weekend where I planned to cook for about 20 people. The man at the meat counter was just so friendly and helpful as I loaded up on pounds of poultry and salmon. I appreciated his humor and conversation. The store is clean, well organized...I mean someone might be OCD here...and I'm pleased thus far with the freshness of the meat and produce that I purchase. I have been disappointed a time or two regarding the selection of items they have for me to choose from on their aisles...for example, I was looking for a specific type of flour to make a cake, and they didn't have it...it is fairly common at other stores though. I ordered a cake from the bakery for my son's birthday on a Tuesday for Sunday. I just wanted a cake with the solar system on it saying HBD with my sons name I gave a simple sheet cake example nothing fancy. The girl who took our cake order seemed confident that there baker could accomplish what I was asking for. I go to work at 4 on Saturday and can't have my phone with me and when I get off work after 11 pm I have a text from Allison, I'm assuming is the baker saying she has some concerns with my cake order. This is less than 16 hours of when I'm supposed to pick my cake up. I was not able to get back with her. I go to pick up the cake the next morning and the girl who took my order was there and said, "the baker said she called you and you never got back with her." So I asked did y'all not make a cake at all then? And the girl said, "no, we don't have fondant." Then she walked away and continued to do what she had been doing before I arrived and didn't even try to resolve the situation. The only thing on the cake that was fondant was the planets.. it didn't need to be exactly like the picture it was just an example, they couldn't spray the planets on or at least made a cake that said HBD and my son's name on it? Come on absolutely ridiculous and you couldn't have figured this out earlier in the week than the evening before the morning I needed to pick it up. I honestly am very disappointed in the professionalism of this bakery this could have been completely avoided. I will say I've never written a bad review for anything in my life until now but this was definitely merited. I have been shopping at this location since it opened as Albertsons around 2002 or possibly even before. Although the inside is more attractive, the customer service is horrible. Just left for the 5-6th time since it became a Tom Thumb and let me state these are not teenagers. They are mature adults that have no social skills. I've honestly been treated 100% better at Walmart on Custer where I will go now. read more

Horrible experience. My husband and I rushed to get here in time before they closed so we could grab two items. Before we walked inside two workers yelled at us across the parking lot telling us how many minutes were left til closing. The staff proceeded to rush us once inside, and kept counting down how many minutes were left til closing. I understand that the staff wants to go home to their families, but they were literally running us out of the store. They made the experience unnecessarily stressful. 0/10 would not recommend. Lazy staff. Went to the deli, multiple workers. There's a hanging menu sign right where I talk to an employee behind the deli about building me a couple of sandwhiches. From bread to meats, cheeses, and toppings and he points me to the premade sandwiches with things I don't want. Build your own and premade are not the same thing. Grocery delis always make sandwhiches, this was just a waste of everyones time due to a misguided or lazy employee. never going back to a tom thumbs. read more

Wow this has to be the worse grocery store ever. I ordered seafood salad from the deli and spit it out after I took a bite. It was spoiled. Expiration dates in this store are awful. I find products like cereal that are 3 months expired. My frozen fish was expired 6 months ago. I called corporate office on that one. Cashiers are rude. Baggers need lessons on how to bag. I once had to return groceries because the bagger put cleaning product with food. The product got all over the food. The frozen foods are ice. I think the freezer is broken. Especially the one that they keep the pizzas in. Products ring in wrong all the time. If you shop here please make sure you check your receipt. I am happy to say after months of putting up with this nasty store I will no longer be shopping here. It may be closer to my house but I found a better Tom Thumb and will travel a little extra. The store remodel is fresh and inviting. Now if they could just master just a tad bit of customer service I might enjoy shopping there. IF the checkers greet you at all it's never to ask for your rewards card. Why? Because the prices are ridiculous if you don't use it. Don't ask...don't tell right? No courteous small talk or invitation to return at the end of the transaction. And certainly no carry out service. A friendly smile and greeting would go a long way to make this a good place to shop. read more

Tom Thumb on Virginia in McKinney started taking Apple Pay a couple of weeks ago. That is why we started shopping at Tom Thumb. Now, it doesn't work. The lady in customer service told me that is was intermittent, because of the way I have it set up on my phone. My Apple Pay works fine at Market Street, Trader Joes, and several other places. And they have removed all of their references to Apple Pay at the registers. I feel I was getting the run-around by customer service. We won't be shopping at Tom Thumb...no Apple Pay, questionable customer service. read more

I shop here because it's really close to my house, not because it's a fabulous shopping experience. I don't care whether I'm greeted when I walk into a grocery store and in fact would prefer to be left alone. I don't want to be chatted up at the checkout lane because my focus is on getting out of the store, not getting a social interaction fix. What I care about in a grocery store is being able to find the stuff I went there for. I'll pay more to not have to deal with Walmart's appalling experience, but I'd like to be able to get everything on my list in one place, too. This store consistently doesn't stock things or re-stock things. It's a crap shoot whether they'll have, for example, those little tins of International coffee flavors. Sometimes they have loads of them, and sometimes they go weeks without a particular flavor. Sometimes they carry those precooked chicken cordon bleu packages, and sometimes they go for weeks without restocking those, and offer only the broccoli and cheese flavor version. The real problem I have with this location, though, is that they *never* have enough checkout lanes open. Nev. Er. If I wanted to stand around for five extra minutes because a store can't staff properly, or because its employees and managers aren't alert enough to open lanes when they have 5 people stacked up in each line, I'd go to Walmart. It's part of the experience there. It shouldn't be the experience in a smaller store with higher prices. That's insult added to injury. read more
