This review will be short and sweet as it is solely based upon entrance fees. Impromptu family decision to have a "day at the lake" today since the weather was perfect. Headed to Tomahawk Lake as it was our go to once upon a time. The price PER PERSON (not per car load) was $22 ... and that was NOT including the water park. If you wanted to add on entrance to the water park it was ANOTHER $15 PER PERSON! We were a party of 4 adults and 3 teens and it would've literally been $259 to ENTER the lake!!!!! AIN'T NO WAY! For that price we could've done a real amusement park, a real water park ... a real lotta other things worth $259. Needless to say we ventured elsewhere but wanted everyone to be aware of this absolute absurdity before wasting your time and gas venturing up there. read more

My husband found this place nearby when Lake Hopatcong was full by the time we arrived. I've never heard of it but it seemed to have a vintage vibe, so OK I'm game. I regretted it right away. It's ridiculously crowded - no problem with parking as they sure made extra space in the back, but driving to the back woods parking lot I was afraid we were gonna hit someone cos of people walking indifferently on the paths. The tiny "beach" is made of hard packed sand, the texture of a dirt road. There are many garbage cans around, which, I appreciate that as there's nothing worse than trash on the ground, but I also don't want to be sitting next to one. There are some picnic tables in the further grassy areas that seemed more chill but the tables close to the water could not be crammed any closer together. The water where kids are playing in is murky and gross looking, as to be expected cos sediments stir up, but this just does not look clean and is way too full of people. And I would not call this a water park - it's a lake with some dingy play structures on it and some boat rides. There also don't seem to be enough lifeguards for this many kids. Summer prices (July 1-Aug 20) are $20pp over 9yo, and $18 for under 9, but you have to pay additionally for the water slides ($13-$17) and other activities. You might as well take your family to a proper waterpark for this price. Maybe once upon a time it was cute as people seem to have nostalgic memories of this place (and they definitely trade on the camp nostalgia), but it seems the park operator is only interested in packing in as many people as possible to the detriment of the experience. There is good live music with a guy playing old time rock n roll, they have hash browns yay (3 for $2.50), and my toddler had fun regardless of my lack of enjoyment or relaxation, hence the extra star. read more

Fortunately won a voucher for this location that included a pass for 4 entrance and 4 water slide passes. Using the pass was a breeze. Drove up to check in. Vehicle was briefly checked to see our head count, 2 adults and 2 kids. Drove into the lot and was guided to our parking spot. We came during a weekday. Lot was not full nor was the beach area. Did not get to experience the slides. Kids must know how to swim as no vests are allowed on their slides. Those lines seemed to have moved quickly. Lakes are basically stagnant; therefore, the water is a bit foggy and darkish in some areas. Yet you can see little fishes at the edge of the water. The food was average. It reminded me of basic fair food. Overall, kids enjoyed being in water that had no currents; yet, after two hours they were okay leaving. read more

Spent the day (for the first time) at the Lake with my 6 and 8 year old. Parking was easy, plenty of tables, reasonably clean bathrooms, lifeguards on waterslides were professional (and feedback was shared with Jack on how great they were), etc. The only negative were people behaving poorly (drunk, not listening to lifeguards, etc). I really wanted to give this place 5 stars. I've been wanting to take my boy since he was prob too young to enjoy it. We all know we don't get that crystal clear look of the beach here in NJ, but it was so brown, which equates to dirty. He had a fun time in the lake playing with the kids. Their "waterpark," as they call it with about 5 or so different types of slides into a mucky lake of no one knew how many feet it was, is not for those who don't know how to swim. They do not allow you to wear a vest, and so, my son wasn't really able to ride on most of them. There were two slides that flowed into a 3 foot pool, but it looked like it hadn't been running all summer. We went at the end of August. The icing on the cake, when a little girl picked up a used (I'm taking) condom from the lake and showed her grandfather. We also all got extremely sick after that visit. Many of the attractions were even open on weekends, which is odd. It's usually the other way around. The website mentioned things that might not have existed like kayaks, unless, that, too, like the boat ride was only on weekdays. It needs to be better kept. read more

If I could rate it lower I would. The facilities are fine. There's Picnic space, A decent lake and nice for younger children. But there is a reason black people do not frequent here. I had heard rumblings of this before but experienced why firsthand. For a field trip on a budget this was ok. $28 a student including lunch. The staff was friendly with the booking process and the day of the trip. However they were not great at directing us for how the day would run and I was constantly trying to figure out if my students had water available to them etc. the park is very dated and can use a good scrubbing and some tlc. I visited Tomahawk lake every summer as a child with my siblings and cousins and only have good memories. I thought it would be a great tradition to start this year with my own children and their cousins while we were in the area visiting. Boy was I wrong. Pros - The young woman who was working the booth in the parking lot was very nice. The young man, Luke working one of the water slides was also very nice. Cons - You pay $14 per person to get in, but that is only to use the lake. You must pay an additional $14 per person to ride the slides. (We had a party of 7) Today there are 5 slides closed down. Only 3 open. No one shared this with us when buying our wrist bands and we still had to pay full price. The older gentleman working the parking was incredibly nasty. He yelled at us for parking even though we parked where a younger parking attendant told us to go. It set the mood for our day. Everywhere you look there are signs that say "No" this, that, etc. Constant screaming from the life guard staff on the beach from their chairs instead of addressing issues directly (which are non issues to begin with) Specifically from a female with a long brown pony tail. My daughters wristband was put on by the admission employee. It was so tight it was cutting into her. We asked for it to be replaced and she said "no, that's against the rules." You can't swim to the docks in the lake. Only waist deep. It could be a wonderful fun place for all, but instead the staff seems very miserable so much that it leaves a dark gloom over the whole park. We were the first few people that arrived really early in the morning. The scenery is so breathtaking and relaxing with beautiful tall trees surrounding Tomahawk Lake. There were already many lifeguards on duty which parents can feel safe. My goddaughter loved the Papoose Land section of the water park because there were more fun stuff to do such as climbing the nets, trying to sit on the floating turtle, climbing across a family of alligators. I saw school of fish swimming near us...awww! Fun rides: Swan boat (for 4 people) Paddle boat (me and my goddaughter) and Row boat (my bestie) Had sooooo much fun today (my actual birthday) with my bestie and my goddaughter. This place is DEFINITELY not the place to go to if you're looking for a fun time. Everything's expensive--you have to pay for parking, pay for an area, and even for small activities such as riding boats. Along with that, the area is extremely filthy. The lake and beach water is a muddy green with random weeds. If you're bringing a child here, they have to be really short, otherwise they can't go onto the slides and equipment area. The staff is also unhelpful. On the website, it was outdated and unspecific about its prices. The staff were rude about the misunderstanding, and didn't try to help at all, only insist on paying. This is one of my favorite water parks! We discovered it last year while visiting relatives. We pay extra for the unlimited wristbands for the slides and it's totally worth it. The regular entrance fee is only for the lake and picnic area. We went again this year on the 4th of July. It was completely packed in the lake and picnic areas, but still very few people going on the slides (woohoo!). The employees were very pleasant and incredibly patient. We arrived at 9:30 (it opened at 9:00), and it took about fifteen minutes to go through the line to pay and get a parking spot. However, they have people directing you the whole way. A few tips: 1. They only take cash, so make sure you have enough. You pay the main entrance fee (per person) as you drive in. Make sure you visit the website to confirm the prices. They do have an ATM on site, but you must have your money ready before you can park, so the ATM is more for purchases inside. 2. If you can, go on weekdays. It's usually not at all crowded. Last year, we went on a Thursday and walked right on the rides the entire time we were there! No waits! If you do go on the weekend, it will be a lot busier, so you'll have to arrive early. However, most people don't buy the wristbands for the slides, so they still have very short lines. 3. Pack a lunch. They allow small coolers, so we just took sandwiches and drinks. Again, make sure you visit the website to see if there are any restrictions. I know you can barbecue there, but we never have, so I don't know much about it. You can eat at picnic tables or lay out a blanket, picnic-style. There are so many shady areas to choose from. 4. Invest in water shoes! There are a lot of rocks and pebbles on the concrete pathways, and it got quite uncomfortable to walk at times. Not a huge issue for me, but I'll definitely get the water shoes next time. 5. Show the employees some love! Yes, they have a lot of rules. However, the rules are there for the safety and enjoyment of everyone. Basically, be polite and respectful. I see a lot of reviews where people complain of being yelled at, but we have never had that happen to us. 6. Don't purchase a wristband if you can't swim. It's a waste of your money and their time. Most of the hold ups we encountered on the slides were due to people who had to be rescued by the lifeguards because they couldn't swim. Every time this happened, the lifeguard had to stop the line to fill out a report and go over safety with the guest. The lake area is not as deep as the slide areas (which can be 10 feet deep), so you'd be better off sticking with just the regular admission. We will be going back at least once every year, but hope to go more often! read more

I have been going to Tomahawk lake for 8 years and I am definitely a fan. I am so suprised by the negative reviews. I think that part of the problem is that when people read "waterpark" they automatically have a connotation of Blizzard Beach or Mountain Creek. Tomahawk Lake is....um....well......a LAKE! There are no chlorinated pools. No fancy beach chairs After going for 8 years, here are my tips. 1. Do you hate crowds? Then go on a week day. If possible, go towards the end August, because many summer camps go to Tomahawk Lake and you will not have to endure campers if you visit when most camps have finished for the summer season. You can pack a cooler, eat on the beach, or purchase food at the snack bar. No crazy restrictions here. 2. There is a clean, man made beach that is divided into three sections: the main lake, Papoose Land (for kids 4ft and under) and Cherokee Land (for kids 4-5 feet in height). When my son was little he loved the obstacle courses and slides in Papoose Land. The main lake swim area is super clean with docks that you can swim out to. Basically, there is something for toddlers, teens and adults at Tomahawk. 3. The Waterpark. Not huge by any means, by for $12.00 you can ride for 7 hours on a variety of waterslides. We came with eight 13 year olds and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves the entire day. The water rides (approximately 9 different rides: tubes-slides-individual sleds) are located in the largely shaded mountain area. I never noticed any "rocky" paths. All the kids walked to the rides barefoot on paved trails. 4. For the adventurer. To the left of the main lake, there are streams and a large pond. While there is no swimming permitted in this natural setting, we always love to take nature walks. Bring a net and a bucket when you go because since my son has been in Kindergarten, he looks forward to catching frogs, turtles, salamanders, tadpoles, etc. It is really a testament to how clean the eco system at Tomahawk is. 5 The Natural beauty. Tomahawk is a man made lake but it was carved out of a beautiful area of Sparta. Sitting on the beach, you are surrounded by nature, pine trees, clean air. Check out the website. (fyi, Tomahawk Lake is in SPARTA, not Garfield....Yelp has to correct this!) btw: There is a beer garden/outdoor bar that adults can enjoy. Tomahawk has something for everyone: little slides for toddlers, waterpark for older kids, frogs/turtles for the nature lover and alcohol for parents on vacation. This place is pretty much the land of "no". You want to do it, there is probably a sign within 5 feet saying that you can't. It's actually a bit comical in a way. Unfortunately if you have young kids up this way, this is probably the best spot to burn off some energy and get them in the water without going down the shore. My family and I came to celebrate Father's Day at this lake. We had an amazing time. This park is a great place for everyone. The kids had a blast and so do I. There was a lot of people but the park is big enough to accommodate everyone. My mom took a boat ride and she loved it. It was one $1. Some of the staff did have an attitude and others didn't know what they were doing. We had a reservation for tables and a grill and when we got there the space was taken by other people, but one nice gentleman gave us a better/private space and they brought us a grill. Not a terrible place to hang if you have really small children, but if you have a child that is tall for their age (over 4ft but under 5ft) they will NOT be allowed to use the main play area. They will be forced into the other play area, that doesn't have any slides, and is crowded with other children who have been banished. (the max height is 5ft there). There aren't enough floating toys in that area so the kids were crowding on to them like turtles on a log. I witnessed a young girl complain to her mom that she was being shoved off the floating pad by other kids. I understand wanting to make money by having people pay for wrist bands for their kids, but this is ridiculous. And then they have these poor teenagers patrolling these areas, some of them not even 5 ft tall themselves. The bathrooms were atrocious. None of the stalls in the bathroom I went to had locks. Parking was extremely tight. You may not get cell phone reception. But on the bright side there is plenty of free seating, (just make sure you show up close to opening time)they sell supplies and food on site, the water isn't that dirty for a NJ lake, plenty of stuff to do, you don't have to sit in line at 6 am like with other lakes, alcohol is allowed and sold on site, and plenty of shady areas to sit. read more

I am currently leaving the lake! This use to be a place that I would come every summer during my childhood fast forward 4-5 years and this place has become a shit show!! I WILL NEVER BE COMING BACK TO THIS PLACE! The entrance fee is ridiculous! $14 per person we paid $70 just to get inside, only not be given proper service. They are fully understaffed.I waited 30 mins to get food that wasn't even good and that was $13 wasted. Right after I bought a wristband to the water slides and tickets for the bumper boat and duck boat. Only to not be able to ride the boats! I feel rob for my money! We are currently coming out from a pandemic so it's abusive how they take your money with no remorse. I spoke to the "manger" and she said that there's nothing she can do for us n that we had an hour and a half to do everything! She was so rude brushing us off and not giving me her full attention. They are a fully white staff and have no respect for those of color. EVERYONE THAT COMES TO THIS LAKE IS OF COLOR (black and Spanish) We honestly should all stop coming and supporting them and hopefully they'll learn to treat us like the paying customers we are. We only got on two water slides within that time frame (1hr 30mins) because of the long lines and waiting around for a life guard to get on the bumper boats. Finally a life guard comes and doesn't acknowledge us! He spends 10 mins trying to make the boat work and when we ask him how much longer would we have to wait he snapped at us saying that he hasn't even started the timer for the previous family .. mind you there were extra boats we could of rode, by that time we only have 20 mins left until everything closed read more

A bit expensive.... Family of 4 - $50 or so to park and use picnic area. $60 for for our family to go on the slides. Mini golf & pedal boats ARE AN EXTRA COST. That was very disappointing so we didn't get to use the boats! Relatively small park, strict rules about adults not swimming in the kid section of lake, rides look worn, dated and dirty. The water is murky lake water which I suppose is expected but they could still do a much better job of cleaning and filtering. The bathrooms were absolutely FILTHY! They need someone cleaning throughout the day! Horrible food, definitely bring your own and grilling is an option too! Cool bar area $7 for a beer, $3 for refills. Strict rules about no radio/music so be prepared to hear an older gentlemen playing a keyboard and classic 60-80's tunes. Kudos for at least playing Hotel California! If you grew up in suburban Jersey, you too may have a soft spot for this summertime gem, which has been beautifully maintained yet minimally changed over its 62-year lifespan thus far. Nestled in the pretty wooded hills of Sparta, this place has a nice little white sand beach, a clean lake with a wide shallow section that warms up in the sun, diving dock, cute life guards, a snack bar, tons of space for picnicking or BBQ'ing, bumper boats, paddle boats, mini golf, ping pong, horseshoes, arcade games, sand volley ball, and the loveliest ol' BEER GARDEN. The water slides aren't the biggest or scariest, but they're fun, well constructed, and the lines move fast. I'm saddened by all these whiny reviews by smug morons with no appreciation of the outdoors or a business's character. Look, if you hate nature then you shouldn't come to a LAKE in the WOODS. And if you don't like mediocre snack bar food, bring your own damn cooler. I've always had a wonderful, laid-back time at Tomahawk Lake. The only "disgusting" thing I've encountered here has been some of the other visitors; eg. foul-mouthed hood rats with their swim trunks drooped halfway down their asses. But so it goes. How much: Adult admission is $13, and bracelets for unlimited water slides is an extra $15. (CHEAP compared to Action Park's $40 admission & mile-long lines.) Beer is like $3/mug, their mixed drinks are potent, & BYOB is allowed, too. I went to Tomahawk Lake this past weekend. I think this place is OK. I don't have any kids so I'm not interested in the water park much. When the reviews say that you get a list of DO NOTs when you first park, they're not joking. Its literally a list of things you cannot do (like if you have diarrhea don't go in the water, really? does that have to be in the rule book?) The lake is well a lake so I was not expecting that much. The beach part was nice minus the guys playing soccer and kicking the ball and running over our towels. I stuck my feet in the water a couple times to cool off.They allow coolers and people were drinking beer cans. Just no glass which is fine. They have a "beer garden" which is just a bar but they made a good strawberry margarita. It was $7 for a good size glass so i don't think that's too expensive I would have to say my biggest compliant was the annoying loud speakers. About every 15-20 minutes a woman would say "ALL BOATS MUST BE 25 FT AWAY, ALL TURTLES, ALL SWANS MUCH BE 25 FT AWAY FROM EACH OTHER" or "NUMBER 20 PLEASE STOP SPLASHING." "NO PLAYING BALL ON THE BEACH" "NO PYRAMIDS IN THE WATER" Clearly no one really cared what the speaker lady was saying. Just seems like it would have made more sense to have someone go up to the people causing the problems rather then yelling over the loud speaker and ruining other people's time. The crowd at Tomahawk lake was a lot of families but also a lot of teenager - early 20s, so they were getting rowdy. Ok...So I don't know if they've cleaned the place up since these past reviews or not, but I've actually always enjoyed my time here. Tomahawk is in Sparta, NJ, which is 45 minutes from my parents house, and there is never traffic to get there (even on weekends) which beats spending 2 hours on the GSP to get down the Shore! They have a good amount of parking, and there are always people directing you, so you'll never have that one guy that parks his car sideways and takes up three spaces. The lake and sand are very clean. They have rides for kids, paddle boats, row boats, and a few other things, but like Linda said below me, it is a LAKE not a waterpark, so please keep your expectations reasonable. Now I've only done the paddle boats, nothing else, but i'm always seeing kids on all the rides so I'm assuming their safe. The lake is family friendly, they have snacks and ice cream for the kids and a bar for the adults, but since they allow alcohol on the sand, I usually just pack my cooler full of beers or mixed drinks. They don't allow big stereos, but no one complains if you have small speakers for your ipod. They are pricey! so they lose a star over that. It's $12 per person on weekends and $10 per person during the week. I've always enjoyed my time here, have never had any complaints of the lake. read more

I came here for 4th of July weekend which was probably an insane idea, but we really wanted to go swimming, plus originally we were going to Lake Hopatcong but they were filled ot capacity by 12 pm. Again we must not have had our coffee but crazily decided to go to Lake Tomahawk. To start, we pulled up and the line in was already backed up for at least a mile with cars idling, anxiously waiting to get in. We fortunately came in from the opposite way so it was easier to gain entry. We did however pay about $30 to get in which I guess was normal? I am not entirely sure about that one. The entire place was mobbed with tons of people! Which is to be expected because of the holiday. Luckily with parking we were able to find a spot that was easily maneuvered out of (biggest fear is getting stuck in a spot). Finding a spot on the beach was a little bit of a hassle, mainly due to the holiday. However we did manage to find a spot in the back closer to the restrooms (not as bad as you think). We were in a spot where there wasn't much foot traffic and enough space so other towels were not on top of us. The sand is this really gravelly large grained white sand, only about 2 inches of it then underneath is hard ground. So don't expect it to be super comfortable while laying out like at the beach. We did not go swimming just because of the amount of bodies in the lake! Also every five minutes they were announcing what you couldn't do and reprimanded tons of people. It's accurate that this location is the Land of No. I will be coming back here to try out the paddle boats shaped as swans. THE ONLY REASON I WANTED TO COME HERE. Really fun old-school place and totally loved all the old statues throughout the place that really add to the ambiance. Nice snack bar but would like to see more selections like chicken fingers and fries. Gift shop was really stocked nicely with a selection of items.. some a bit pricier than they should be but many reasonable. Great and expansive picnic areas.. everyone can grab a private spot. Came on a weekday so can't speak for the weekends. Only disappointment was that the water was tied off way too shallow as the lake is huge and is barely being utilized. Also the water was very hot. If these couple of issues could be improved upon would be a 5 star spot. Hope they never close as we recently moved up to Sparta area and hope to make this a yearly spot. Oh one more point.. the season pass could be cheaper especially for Sussex county residents. At $100 pp this is a bit steep. I think $50-75 would be much more reasonable. Had a party at Tomahawk Lake and there was a huge swarm of bees/wasps in our picnic area. We had to constantly protect the food because of these falling berries & excessive amount of bees/wasps around. I understand that we are outdoors and expect bugs but when I say it was a swarm....i seriously mean it. Not safe at all. The trees kept shedding berries causing our clothes, towels, bags etc to be stained. After serving your meal you had to walk away from our area in order to eat in peace without berries or bugs disturbing you. The water was dirty and crowded and out of our group of 25+ people, those that went in all got sick. Will never go back there ever again. read more

This place is cool to bring kids. But bring your own food. I had to wait an hour and twenty minutes to get a burger and fries. I wasted a good portion of my day waiting for my food. They have picnic tables that you can bring food to which is nice. read more

It's very family oriented place. You can either bring your own food or buy something there. My 3 year old loved it because there were a lot of water activities for his age group. My older daughter loved it too because she went to water rides for the older kids. The Only problem in both areas was the water. It seems to be dirt underneath the sand so the water doesn't look clean. That's the only reason I will not be returning. read more

It's a great place to cool off, especially with kids. They have 4 areas. One for kids 4 ft and under. One for kids 5 ft and under. One for anyone. One for water slides that's separate admission. Fun play structures in the water mostly in the 4 ft and under zone. A few negatives. No diaper changing stations. No adults allowed in the 5 ft and under area. You have to watch kids from the shoreline. This was aggressively enforced today. They are slow/don't enforce the 4 ft and under area until you say something. So multiple times large kids would monopolize the young children area and you'd have to ask the staff to enforce the height limit. Yes, they aggressively kick out adults from the 5 ft area but are lazy about enforcing rowdy kids in the 4ft area. Also the native American naming throughout the park is dated. read more

We went on a weekday in late August, with temperatures in the mid-80's. Everything was VERY clean, staff was friendly and helpful, facilities were well-maintained and good order, even at the end of the season. Also, we were amazed by the clarity of the lake and the variety of wildlife in it - fish, herons, even swimming turtles!! The water seemed very clean, and I'm quite sure you wouldn't have so much living in and near it if the water wasn't in quite pristine condition. The entrance fee is maybe a bit high - but the park is much closer to us than the Shore, and offers more than the Shore for little kids, especially considering all of the water play equipment for the younger kids. We were prepared to shell out money for the slides, but it turns out there was plenty to do all day without even venturing onto the slides. We saved those for next time. Food was your typical amusement park fare - $2.50 cheeseburgers, $2 hamburgers, french fries, popcorn, etc. Apparently, they keep the menu even smaller on cool days in late August, as a few menu items weren't prepared. It's fine - we didn't go there for the food. They do have a fairly extensive ice cream selection. I think the beer garden was closed all day. Place was uncrowded and very clean. We loved it and would gladly go back. We'd probably do so on a weekday and somewhat cooler day, just to keep things pleasant and uncrowded. read more

This place is the worst place I have ever ever ever been to. Not only are there only 3 rides for the kids but the employees are the rudest people I have ever met. We came just for the water park but had to pay for the lake which is the dirtiest lake I've ever seen. The only saving grace is CJ he was a doll. read more
