It was nearing Thanksgiving and we needed to get our clutch repaired on our 2003 VW Jetta before a lengthy drive to Oregon. Tim was able to squeeze us in the next day and it was completed that evening! Jetta drives like a new car and he upgraded the clutch from the crappy stock one VW stick in their cars. They also noticed I had a tail light out and swapped that out as well (not too many of my past mechanics would have done that). I know I have a timing belt to replace soon and there is no question where I'll be taking it. These guys deserve a better location to work their magic. Highly recommend. read more

Heard about these guys through vwVortex and decided to try them out. I'm so happy I did! I had an issue with the drivers side door not locking and some pesky control arm bushings. Ken knew right away over the phone what was going on and told me to bring it in. They fixed the door and put stiffer R32 bushings in my lowered MKIV GTi. These guys are great. Their shop is clean and has cool project cars. Customer service - they can not be more helpful and accommodating. And they know what they're doing and do it on time. The only not so good part is their prices on parts. They charge full list prices. 02 sensor - $284. Same sensor online - $134. On a plus side they totally don't mind you bringing your parts for them to install (rear my previous review). Come on, guys, find another part supplier. :) read more

At over 100K miles, I had to get some major work done on my dub that the dealers were charging me an arm and a leg for. I searched the VW forums and found a link to Tomas' site. I couldn't have been more happy with the service and friendly atmosphere at the shop. I was especially impressed with all the nice dubs they had. I only wish they were located a bit more central, but other than that, everything went smooth and my baby is running like new (or almost new). I love these guys. I consistently feel cared for in an honest and real way. My car always comes out driving at the top of it's game. I am treated as an equal and always with respect. Update: got my car back with the water/meth system and it works flawlessly. This was a complicated install, but Tim did a fantastic job on it. All the guys at Tomas are terrific to deal with. I highly recommend using Tomas...they are terrific! I just hired these guys to install a water/meth kit on my BMW 335d. Finally, a shop that knows how to do tuning right in Berkeley. Ken is great, friendly and very straightforward. When I talked to Tim about the details of install I knew immediately that I had found the right guy. Angels - Tech angels/ customer service angels. They understand and love the cars they work on... and their prices are reasonable. They helped me immensely with understanding some issues on my 2001 VW Passat. -They spent unpaid time figuring out that an oil leak (which Bwy VW denied as a warranty repair) was in fact a manufacturer's Powertrain Warranty with no deductible. -They volunteered to clean out the sun roof drains. -They discovered a problem that the dealer should have fixed during the 40k service that had been performed 1 month before I saw Tomas. - I did statistics homework while I waited for the car to be fixed and I enjoyed chatting with another customer. great experience! read more

I've heard about this place many times in the VW community. When they started flashing C2 software I decided to take a trip out to Berkeley. Just driving up to this place was awesome. Nice looking VW's lined the street. When I walked in, they had wheels everywhere, and an amazing built up Caddy which provided the coolest waiting area I've ever been in for an auto shop. Extremely competent, reliable, and honest. These guys are really good at what they do. They communicate and keep you in the loop in terms of what your car needs, how much it will cost and when they can deliver. I get the sense that they actually care about their customers and value their good name. I took my Passat to two different shops before coming to Tomas. The other shops wanted to charge me over $1500 and keep my car for several days to get to the bottom of a Check Engine light warning. The guys at Tomas had the Passat fixed within one day and charged me a fraction of what the other shops had quoted. If you want the best, these are the guys. Highly recommended. read more

I had been going to Tim's shop for years. He had great customer service and quality work - until he moved to 4th Street. Once he was settled-in at his new location and hired a few new mechanics, I noticed the customer service sliding. He no longer checked the air in my tires, or my fluid levels. Maybe he got too busy and too popular? I paid him twice to fix the same problem and when it went-out a thrid time, I decided to bring my car to another mechanic. He told me that whomever had been working on my car, did a very "shoddy" job. I'm extremely disappointed because I considered Ken and Tim friends. I trusted them with my vehicle and paid them lots of money over the years. I won't return, as I found someone new who is cheaper and much more reliable. read more

I was in a fix with an alternator that went - these guys were Terrific. The only reason I give them 4 stars is that at $125/hour, if you have an uncomplicated job and are not in need of the best, you may want to look a bit more for a lower hourly rate. I'm usually caught off guard by the "round up to the next hour" prices on car fixes, but the $600+ I paid here for a break job and to change out the alternator hits hard on top of the other $700+ in parts on a 2001 TDI Jetta. Anyone driving a car as old is me is probably on a bit more of a budget. These guys are friendly, the attitude is great and I think they know what they are doing and they seem honest. If you are on a budget and might want that extra $200 - $500 or so bucks to drive your Jetta another 2K - 5K miles, and the job is standard - you might want to look around. If things are good and you want the best, this seems like one of the places to go. You get what you pay for here. read more

I've never had a Yelp account but created one just so I could highly recommend these guys. I was referred to the shop by a coworker who also has a VW. Needed to change a headlight which on the car requires you take the bumper off (seriously), and figured might as well change both of them at the same time. Dealership was going to charge 160 per bulb and over 150 for labor. These guys charged the list price for the bulbs and an honest 30 minutes of labor. Not just the price, but these guys were really great to work with over the phone and in person. I live in San Jose and work up in Oakland, but I will definitely be taking my car back here when it needs anything. read more

I first went to an Albany Volkswagen/Audi shop because its walking distance from home to get a estimate to install a cat back exhaust on my GLI, I new right of the back that I would not be going back, he had to go on the computer to find out how long, 3 1/2 to 4 hrs. labor charge wth I estimated it would take me about 4/ 5hrs to do it with putting it up on jack stands. Got in my car and called Tomas S.T. got an estimate made my appointment, shop opens at 8am got a call back at 10:30 that my car was done 1 1/2 hour labor charge. Super nice guys, clean shop, I also like that when I got out of my car the first thing they did was shake my hand and welcome me, I go in the office and they shake your hand this maybe stupid but to me a hand shake means alot read more

Seriously, I cannot imagine why anybody with a VW/Audi would go anywhere else. OK, maybe if you lived in like, Zimbabwe or something, but c'mon, who lives there? Oh. Zimbabweans. Duh. (no offense meant to any Zimbabweans reading this review. It's just one guy's opinion on teh Intarwebs.) Tim, Kevin, and Ken are amazing. I like the fact that they'll tell me I'm wasting my money on something that I don't really need. Tim's probably forgotten more about VWs than I'll ever know. Kevin's getting close. Ken is a snappy dresser. Having been there more times than I'd care to remember, I can always count on seeing at least a couple of really cool cars while I'm there. Not to mention that I never know what they're going to be working on. I walked into the shop the other day and they had an Alfa on the lift! Wow. I've seen them tackle everything from basic maintenance on commuter-mobiles to full-on show-winning custom stuff. VW, Audi, BMW, Benz, Toyota, whatever. Recently, I was having a minor problem with a battery cable. Although I didn't have an appointment, i decided to stop in to TST since I was in the neighborhood. I figured the worst that would happen is that they'd say no, sorry, can't help and send me on my way. but that didn't happen. they invited me to pull into their garage. they assessed the situation and within 10 mins had devised and implemented a solution to the problem.
