I've always wanted to try a wine tasting and the cold day made it the perfect time. A flat is $10 and you can share it with one other person. There are about 60 choices and it is challenging to narrow it down, but we did! We opted for and enjoyed: 2020 Napa Palmaris Red Cape May Red RkTsiteli - a Russian grape, spicy, pear finish Blackberry Moscato Mulled Spice/broomstick brew The decorate was so festive for the holidays and the Christmas items were all 50% off, so I started my shopping for next year. Our server was super helpful with making suggestions. We even grabbed a couple of homemade chocolates. I got the peanut butter and hubby had the crunchy PB. Great way to start the day. The wine is excellent. I got 6 different bottles of fruit moscatos. They are delicious! I missed any wine tastings while I first rode around, then walked around looking for the small store. It is a pretty little wine shop. The man waiting on me was wonderful! He was patient while I figured out what I wanted and quickly got each bottle once I named them. Then, seeing that I was using walker, he came out from behind the counter and held the door open for me and gave me good directions for getting back to my car. Enjoyed wine tasting here paired with handmade truffles...staff was really friendly and helpful. $10 plus tax for 5 tastings - pick the wines you wish to sample from the list. Was already prepared ahead of the seeing the list from walking around the winery to see what wines they had. The color tags were helpful as well: pink = dry wine, green = semi-dry wine, orange = sweet wine. Selected 5 for the tasting and decided to pair with a couple of truffles. $3.25 for truffles - showgirls truffle was very good. Of the 5 wines, enjoyed the Shore House Red the best and purchased a bottle. Good to be able to try a tasting before deciding to purchase. There were select wines that were 25% off as per the display. The have birthday cards by birth year too... would come back again while in the area. Ok, first is first. The tasting it seemed to not have any local wines. Which is why I like these kinda wineries to support small but also we didn't get any experience at all. We are asked to pick 5 wines and take a seat. After we are asked when our name is called is to come get our tasting. So, for this I would have just rather sit somewhere with a whole bottle of wine. The place is very cool. Love the cottage feel and the wine decoration with bottles. They didn't have any little pallet changers (chips, nuts, crackers) so when we were changing wines we wouldn't have the old taste of the previous wine. The staff are always friendly and immediately greet you when you walk in. They have a wide variety of wines from dry to sweet, reds to whites to dessert wines. They even have hard cider available (strawberry mango, plain cider, and pineapple). You can pay to do a tasting and get a Tomasello glass to keep. What a cute and cozy little wine tasting room. Since this was my first time in Historic Smithville, I didn't realize there are two tasting rooms. 1 located by the arcade and boat race pond and the other across the walkway bridge by Smithville Inn. My review is for the later location. Hubby and I walked in and first walked around to look at all the lovely wine things to buy and the wall boards with snappy quirky sayings- love stuff like this, they also have a really unique and beautiful wine glass chandelier. We both decided to partake in the tasting of 5 wines and you also get to keep a wine glass. He prefers sweet white wines and I prefer either very dry crisp white or heavy reds, not much in between for me- except for on rare occasions a sweet fruity wine that pairs well with after dinner treats. Tasting was very nice and although the room is small at this location, you can walk around and meet new folks that also like wine tasting, in this case there were a few couples that were familiar with Temecula Ca, where I really love the wines from this particular area, much more so than other Cali locations. I will say that we did join the wine club for the 2-year club and brought a few bottles home. Staff here are friendly and you can tell they take great pride in their craft. read more

Wine connoisseurs beware! Or people who enjoy a great wine tasting experience with family and friends. Do not visit the Tomasello Smithville, NJ "The Village" location. The level of service provided by Steve and the staff was horrendous! They started off there poor welcome with a distasteful standoffish greeting followed by a sour puss attitude. We never once got the wine tasting experience that I paid for. What we received instead was blantant racism at its finest. Read on for further details of what took place during our wine tasting experience at the Tomasello Smithville, NJ location. The poor level of service began immediately upon arrival. We drove 3 plus hours to arrive at the location and was poorly greeted by the staff. For starters we were lost because the address listed, takes you to someone's home and not the village where the winery is located. The persons home was seven miles out of the way. So, we called the winery to get directions and was told, oh just use the Smithville inn as your location. We followed that address and finally arrived only to find out there was no bathroom on the premises. So we had to go outside and find the nearest restroom. When we returned, the poorly executed meet and greet continued with us being presented with a membership form to complete and told that we would receive the top portion back before we left that had all the discounts and perks on it. As we patiently waited to be seated, a group of ladies for-warned us and said that the wine is really good but the service sucks. So, we just wanted to let you guys know. Since we drove 3 plus hours to get there we stayed anyway. We waited patiently for the other staff person who provided us with another piece of paper that had the names of the wines on it and told us to select 5 wines, pointed to the bar stools and told us to sit anywhere. So. we began selecting wines to sample and sat there waiting for what to do next. After wondering and waiting, we asked the person at the register so what happens next? He reluctantly replied "you need to bring the paper back to me" Where he would complete the order and call us when it was ready. So we did and as he continued to ignore us and multitask behind the register servicing customer, after customer who purchased wines. He finally called our names, so we actually had to go down the stairs to meet him, where he was ringing up more customers; to pick up a tray of 5 miniature samples of wines to taste. Normally at wineries you stay for a while but our experience there was so unpleasant and uncomfortable that we took flight instead of enjoying our flights of wine. We went to the front and expressed our concerns and were ignored and never got the memberships as promised. What we saw was the staff catered to a certain type of people. The table right next to us came in 20mins after us and were provided with service where, he walked up to their table and asked them what they wanted and how could he help and if they needed anything to just ask for him. He not only helped them but served them their flights. We never received any level of customer service whatsoever. What we received instead was blatant disrespect and racism at its finest. read more

Tomasello winery was established in 1933 and is a family run business. Personally, I like the impersonal large corporate grape producing companies like Gallo wines. There are two locations in Smithville one is near the village green area which I visited and the other is over the bridge and gives you a view of the water. Talk about saturating the market. The half timbered building on a cobbled stone street is just the right atmosphere for those who like to pay for the nostalgia and delusions of romanticism. It is sort of modern European but quaint. Inside, you will find a cozy wine tasting room. Wine tasting will cost you $5 for tastings. For some reason I got a free initial tasting which I can't explain. You get to keep the glass which is quite attractive. The grapes are grown in Camden and Atlantic county where the soil is sandy and loamy unlike Northern New Jersey with it's clay soils. The soil gives the wine a unique taste. They are the second largest vineyard in N.J. next to Renault with 70 acres under cultivation. With 30 different grape varieties, they range from dry to sweet, reds and whites as well as fruit wines. I ended up buying two bottles of the award winning Cranberry wine. they had almond, apple, pomegranate and blueberry as well. I am not much for red sweet wines but more of a dry white wine person. They have an on-line store and outlets around the state. The grapes are harvested from August to October. A dry season will produce a sweater wine with the roots going deeper and adding more levels of flavor to the wine. Thanks Tomasello for the wine and the wine knowledge. This was our first visit to New Smithville and to Tomasello winery tasting room. We had Rick do our tasting and he was fantastic!! Super knowledgeable and gave us lots of little pointers on wine in general. My husband and I have done quite a few wine tastings but this one by far has topped them all! Not only was the wine fantastic, and a huge selection but Rick definitely made the entire tasting. He had us laughing & was super friendly. I would totally do this tour again but only if Rick was on! We left with a few bottles of wine and were very pleased. We found an awesome deal on Groupon and so glad we checked out this quaint little room. read more

Wine tasting was limited..you basically had 15 mins to taste due to covid..and only had two tables..the staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable we purchased 5 bottles the prices were decent..i would like to think that the experience would be better once the restrictions are lifted..some of the customers were down right rude evidently they dont understand first come first serve..unfortunately the staff have to tolerate the ignorance of the public. read more

I found this place through Groupon , although i did not purchase the deal , i decided to do the 5 tasting special with a wine glass for 5 bucks. The Female server gave my boyfriend and i an extra tasting free of charge . It is a bit small and there isn't an outside seating , however the service and wine at this location is quite superb . Visited this winery during the week and it was a lovely way to spend some time in historic Smithville. We visited the location closest to the Smithville Inn (behind the bakery). Been going to Smithville for many years and recently been going back more often, meeting friends there, eating at Fred and Ethels, but I would say certainly stop in and do a tasting, especially if Rick is there. The wine was great and affordable (proud it is from NJ!) and Rick gave us a mini lesson as to what to look for in wine. He was not pushing and the wine was great ! Definitely stop in!! read more

Simply based on the service, it was horrible. We went to the one next to Costello's pizzeria. Tom was such a rude server. We walked into an empty store, excited to do a group wine tasting in this beautiful place. The wines looked incredible and the place was so cute. However, the service absolutely ruined it. When my family and I first walked in, he didn't greet anyone in my party. When we all wanted to do the wine tastings, he coped an attitude about the rules. He spoke so fast about how to choose the wines, we couldn't understand him. When my dad asked for him to repeat himself, he got very snappy and short with us. He held up five fingers and mocked my dad when we had questions about how many wines we had to choose. This insulting and belittling behavior was so unappealing, we asked for a refund before even starting the wine tasting. It was so upsetting how he treated us and made us feel so stupid. Visited the winery on 12/27 ( next to the pizzeria ) and encountered the rudest counter server / hostess ever ! First of all lady if you don't like your job - quit it ! If you can't handle the holiday season - don't work . We were excited to do a wine tasting since we were quarantined recently due to covid and now we were allowed to have some fun . I approached the counter to ask a question and was rudely told to give her 1 minute- definitely can't multi task. I walked away . When we returned we were given the sheet and told to pick 5 wines - no help or guidance at all : most wineries have suggestions . She was rude . I regret not walking out but we paid - sipped the wines and laughed at how rude the service was . The wine was ok . I did enjoy the salted caramel and blueberry but was not willing to drop a dime - In fact the winery should reimburse all customers who visited the winery between 4:30 and 5:30 just for the fact that the service sucked !
