Dinner time experience: Amazing pizza with a simple salad bar. Very tasty - but fairly pricy. We got a pizza that had a number of different types in one. And then the three of us got the salad - $60 something for a large pizza with salad. Love the type of pizza with the thin crust. I need to come back for the lunch buffet as I want to taste the dessert one and the value is better for that too. Service was good. And the decor is nice. read more

We came as a family (w/ small kids) and the restaurant was cozy and clean. We were greeted by two of the employees, chef assistant or chef and the waiter. I could see ourselves coming back here. The texture was exactly what a classic apizza should be. The undercarriage had a perfect, rigid crisp with beautiful leopard-print charring that added a great smoky bitterness. Maybe for next time, though, we will get the spaghetti or softer food on the menu. The lunch buffet at Tomatoes Apizza is exceptionally good. It's available Monday through Friday from 11 am to 2 pm (dine-in only). Included in the price of $13.99 is pizza, salad bar, pasta, garlic bread, chocolate piadina and a fountain drink (Coke products). The pizzas are fresh and delicious, and the variety of pizzas is mind boggling (see photo). I had a slice of spinach pizza and a slice of crab (yes, crab) pizza, and they were both amazing with crunchy crust fresh from the oven. The crispy cheese bread was so tasty, but I warn you, it's addictive. There was also an all-you-can-eat salad bar, filled with fresh items and a variety of wonderful dressings. I had the balsamic vinaigrette, which really hit the spot. The interior of the pizzeria was clean, warm and inviting, and the staff couldn't be friendlier or more accommodating. The place attracted a crowd of people, who obviously knew about this place before I did. Despite the onslaught of people, the staff was able to keep up with the demand. That kitchen was really humming. It was amazing to watch. So if you're looking for exceptional pizza at a great price, look no further than Tomatoes Apizza. You really won't regret it. read more

We just moved to FH and decided to try something new. I didn't realize until after that "a pizza" is a style of pizza from New Haven.. but anyway. It was fine. My bf really loves the coal-fire style so he was a huge fan. I liked it, but I don't think it's my ultimate preference. We also got the garlic bread, which was good flavor wise but it was more on the crispy crust side if that makes sense so it wasn't my fav. The "marinara sauce" is not good and way too watery. Overall it was just "okay" for me. I will say, for a small pizza and small bread, 35 bucks is way too much and we didn't even get it delivered. They also charge you a "local business fee" which I have never seen. Apparently the fact that small business pizza places are already more expensive, they also need to add another fee on. I like to support local business but this does make me think twice. read more

Absolutely outstanding experience from start to finish. The food here is on another level. The pizza is made with care -- perfectly cooked crust, rich sauce, quality toppings, and everything tastes fresh and intentional. You can tell this place actually takes pride in what they serve. The service was excellent. There was a young brunette working who absolutely hustles -- nonstop, attentive, and clearly cares about doing her job well. I could eat at Tomatoes everyday for the rest of my days and die a happy man. I've had the pleasure of enjoying their amazing food for years and never tire. During lunch hours, you can enjoy the buffet and get an amazing selection to sample from along with the amazing salad bar. This time, we went in the evening and still enjoyed the salad bar, but instead of the buffet, we got a pizza just for us. This was the large Naples Sampler which could easily feed 4 people was an amazing variety. Ambiance is nothing to write home about, but still well done. And the service is friendly and quick! I came to Tomatoes after a coworker told me about their lunch buffet, and at only $13.99, I had to check it out. I have to say, I wasn't disappointed! The buffet had a nice variety, though the style of pizza doesn't have a very long shelf life, so a couple slices were on the cooler side by the time I grabbed them. That being said, the salad bar was outstanding--fresh, crisp, and full of options. For dessert, the Nutella pizza was a sweet finish and definitely a highlight. Visited 4/11/25. Pretty much all staff quit last week. So there's a red flag. Only 2 brand new servers were in charge of EVERYTHING in the diningroom. One started today and the other yesterday. They even had to bus the dishes and clean tables. Every seat was full and it was total and complete chaos. At first we felt sympathetic for the staff but we got mad at the owners when we realized that they chose to open the doors without adequate staff. Why wasn't the owner there pitching in? All management must have quit when everyone else did. Even the front area where they handle carryouts was way understaffed. Everything was a very long wait, obviously. And shock - when our pizza came out? It was the wrong one. Those 2 wait staff worked their butts off. Buy I have no respect for the owner if this is how he runs the business. He has a nice story about himself all framed at the front. But the reality showed tonight. The pizza is delish. It's cool to have a salad bar. But no way in hell will I support this business ever again. Good pizza is available all over. Oh those parents who let their precious kids run around and SCREAM? My brother and I agree that the pizza was 3.5 stars when we ate it fresh, but a solid 4 when we heated up the leftovers...mind-boggling, no idea how that works. We ordered a large fresh mozzarella pizza with pepperoni, which also comes with fresh basil on top. Usually it's easy to tell if something is fresh mozzarella, but I don't think I'd identify it as fresh if it weren't labeled as such - maybe it's drier than other fresh mozzarella I've had or they use a mix of fresh and bagged? No clue. The pepperoni on there were thick and tasty. The crust was thinner than normal pizzas, but not "thin crust" thin. It had a good texture to it. It was definitely pricey at $30, but it was enough for my brother and I to have a bunch for lunch, plus another meal each. The pizza boxes advertise review snippets from food publications saying "best pizza in Michigan" or "top 5 pizzerias". I wouldn't agree with those assessments, but it was for sure tasty. read more

Stopped by after going to Franklin's Cider Mill. Got the large pizza & boy was it large. Good enough for 3-4 people. The pizza is a super thin crust & the dough is really delicious. This place is great and how we didn't know about it until now is unknown. We went for lunch buffet M-F 11am-2pm: $12.99 per adult and age of kid is price you pay. So for a family of four it was under $30 with unlimited salad bar, pizza, pop, and dessert (Nutella between pizza dough ). Pizza is the thin and crispy kind, comes straight out of the oven on the other side of the buffet counter. You can see the guys shoveling in pizza after pizza in the huge wood oven. There is also made to order spaghetti with marinara, marinara with meatballs, or garlic oil. Just ask the server, who gave us a tip that some people just order a plate of meatballs or mix the marinara and garlic oil together. We will try the spaghetti option next time. Salad bar had chickpeas, salami, croutons, olives, cheese, cucumber, tomato, and I believe Italian, ranch, and one other dressing available. The kids enjoyed the chickpeas, salami, and olives from the salad bar and some cheese pizza. The Nutella pizza dessert was a hit! Drinks are just a fountain with coke, Diet Coke, root beer, lemonade, unsweetened ice tea (so you can make an Arnold Palmer, my favorite), sprite, and water. To go cups available as well. There were people doing to go lunch buffet but not sure how that works or if the pricing is the same. Turn over was quick despite the small dining room. The busing staff was very efficient and friendly. We had a mishap with a spilled water glass that they instantly came to help mop up. Only hang up is that we wish the one closer to us in Birmingham offered the same buffet option. It is very clean and well staffed with very friendly and helpful staff. Tomatoes Apizza opened in 1998 in Farmington Hills and has three locations. The buffet is open Monday through Friday from 11 am to 2 pm for $12.99 per person and includes a drink, dessert and salad bar. They had 12 different pizzas out and they are all thin crust hand tossed and cooked in a fire brick oven over charcoal. They are very good pizzas and i can see why they are busy. Would i say they are number one in Michigan? NO but i will say they are definitely worth the $12.99 cost and have unique pizzas like crab that most places don't have. You can request a certain type of custom pizza if they don't have it out and they will make it for you at no additional charge. We definitely will go back and try the Spaghetti and other Italian dishes. The crust on the pizza's are thin and crispy. read more

We tried Tomatoes Apizza for the first time recently and absolutely loved it! We tried the Naples Sampler, which separates a large pizza into four samples. We loved it all except for the "Green" corner, which was a little too much spinach for my taste. The "World Famous Garlic Bread" was also delicious, and could quite possibly be one of my favorite garlic breads of all time! It's perfectly garlicky and buttery, and doesn't feel too filling/thick. This is not your typical Metro Detroit spot - and for Detroit-style I still love my Buddy's, but this is spectacular pizza. Service was really great - they took the time to look over my order, chatted with me, and made sure I had everything I needed. The pizza was incredibly good - so flavorful, delicious. We tried the garlic bread and the cheese garlic bread, and the garlic bread itself was a bit lacking - definitely go for the cheese bread, which was addictingly good. This place is amazing from the service to the food, which is why I'm giving it 5 stars. I rarely give out 5 stars as it doesn't leave room for improvement, but my experience was excellent. First off, the service had my pizza ready exactly when it said it would be after ordering online. I went during lunch so it might become skewed during busier hours as suggested in other reviews. The pizza is very authentic and you can't rush perfection. The lady working the counter was very polite and was dealing with some upset patrons about the prices of the pizzas. She was very nice to them and even attempted to give them a menu before they stormed out upset that the large pizza is $21. Bonus points for remaining in a good mood and offering alternatives. I find it rare that employees can maintain a level of professionalism when being disrespected by people who don't even spend money there and then not letting it affect the experience of actual customers! As for the pizza, Dave Portnoy had this place completely wrong. It is every bit as good as the places in New Haven, CT. The crust is very crispy with virtually no flop. There's a nice tang to the sauce and the cheese is very fresh, everything you could expect from a New Haven pizza. Dave should've rated this place a 8.8 and not a 7.8. I had just ate Fredi the Pizza-man's pizza 30 minutes before coming here and I could've easily ate the whole large even though I wasn't very hungry. Dined there last night, had the awful experience of seeing and hearing the rudest family, (2 adults 5 children under 10) they were loud, trashed the table area, disregarded other customers peace and quiet, why? Every time I come here it's always a five and I've been coming here for a decade and a half! My kids practically grew up here! We have so many family gatherings here, my daughter makes Tomatoes Apizza her birthday meal every single year, no exceptions! Today was delish. They have my absolute favorite salad bar here. It's not big and does not have a lot of choices. But it's as if they knew all of my favorite toppings and made a salad bar around my own personal choices of absolute yumminess. They have lettuce, grilled chicken, crab, cheese, salami, chick peas, black olives, onions, tomatoes, three simple dressings, and pizza crust croutons. It's only $4.50 if you purchase a pizza, and absolutely worth it. Your tummy will thank you. We also went for a large half green, half classic with spinach. It was simply heaven in my mouth. I topped it off with a glass of Fat Tire. Having a few beers on tap and a small wine selection has elevated the restaurant, since those beverages go nicely with pizza and pasta. The pasta is decent. They also prepare an incredible Nutella pizza dessert if you still have room. There is no question why Tomatoes garnered national recognition for their food. Very, very craveable here. read more
