Good Chinese eat in and take-out is a rarity in Wayne, but Tommy Cheng's is one of the few exceptions. Tucked away in a little strip mall near Kohl's on Route 23, the interior is dated but cozy, table service is fast, and everything is prepared & served quickly. Food is ok. They have a large variety of Chinese, and Japanese including sushi. In my experience the Japanese is better than the Chinese.

What a nice surprise...Checking my morning emails, I saw a Groupon for this Asian BYOB, located right near evening shopping and errands. I checked out some reviews and decided it was worth giving a try...So glad we did :) It's warm contemporary decor was nice, and at 6:30, better than half the restaurant was seated...It holds about 20 tables or so. It took a few minutes to be seated, since the hostess took the take out orders and helped clear tables, and there were only two waitresses working the floor...which meant service was a little rough, but totally tolerable. We shared some hand rolls to start and collectively gave them a "B"...the nori it was wrapped with was a little dry and chewy. For our meals, we figured a standard general's chicken is always a good gauge of this sort of restaurant and it's my 9 yr old's favorite. Love that we could request white meat only...Between that, the preparation and an awesome sauce, it was a winner :) We had it with brown rice for the extra charge and got a side of lo mien, which was also cooked perfectly, and not greasy at all. My husband ordered the beef and scallops in a brown sauce, and thoroughly enjoyed himself as well. I tasted it, and was impressed with the balanced flavors of the sauce, and the tenderness of the beef. We skipped on dessert because there wasn't much to choose from, and close to home, we have a hard time making sense of paying $4.50 for a couple of scoops of ice cream ;) By the time we left there was a wait about 4 tables deep. It's worth checking out if you're local, for sure. It's decor and quality is nice, but it may be a little too loud for a date. Bought a groupon to try this place out. Small inside, waitresses didn't speak much English but food was decent. We tried the shrimp tempura which only came with 2 pieces and 3 tempura veggies. Would have liked to have a couple more shrimp. We had to ask for noodles and duck sauce, guess they are just not brought to the table. For our entrees I had the pan fried noodles with chicken,shrimp and beef. It was very tasty. Also came with a side of white rice. My husband got the steak and chicken hibachi dinner which came with soup, salad and white rice. He said it was average. As an Fyi they do not give you free refills on drinks. What struck us first, is the clean, modern, almost minimalist lines of what seems to be a "hole in the wall" type eatery. It's spacious, with shades of gray, nice tile, and comfortable seating. I began with a two roll sushi platter $8.75, the lunch special. I even had the Singapore Mei fun, which was absolutely delicious. It was just spicy enough, and there were hardly any traces of oil left on the plate. The noodles were perfectly done, and there was plenty of shrimp to enjoy. I recommend this place, for lunch or dinner, and they also present a nice variety of Japanese and Thai foods. Pretty decent food! My friends and I were visiting from out of town, and this was one of the restaurants near our hotel. The restaurant is small, but very quiet and not crowded. Our table of 5 was seated comfortably at a round booth in the corner. I ordered a Spicy Tuna Roll and the Sashimi Regular [which came with soup and salad]. All of the food was fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. My friend ordered a "Sushi Sandwich" appetizer, which I wish I ordered. The flavor combinations were great, and the dish was unlike anything I could get at home. It was kind of like a flat sushi roll cut into quarters. Sounds weird, but the layers of fish, veggies, and sauce made it delicious. My sashimi and spicy tuna were great, I have no complaints. OMG...where do I begin....I had to get this all down while it was still fresh in my mind bc its too unbelievable to make up. Let's start with the reservation...I made it for 7:00 pm and we arrived at 6:45 pm. When we got there, there were 2 frustrated customers that had a 6:30 pm reservation and were still waiting for their table. My husband and I were seated around 7:30 pm and the 2 people before us were only seated about 10 mins before us. I should have known something was up when the receptionist hung up on me after I made the reservation. We left at 9:15 pm. While we were sitting there, it the place was extremely hot. I noticed the thermostat was set for 78 degrees. That is hot considering that it was 92 degrees out. I told the greeter that it was hot and she said she would call someone to adjust it. When she called out the guy (I'm assuming the manager) he yelled something at her in chinese with a hand gesture. He never adjusted the thermostat. I ordered the sushi, which was a big mistake. I should have known something was up when I saw people sending back the sushi. I ordered 2 sushi rolls which were horrible. They both had stale shrimp tempura! I have never had stale tempura in any roll at any sushi place I have been to. I never send back food, but I had to. It was just inedible. Also, my rolls were sitting at the sushi bar for at least 30 mins before they were brought over to me. If I would have known those were mine, I would have gotten up and picked them up myself. Which reminds me...there were various people that got up from their tables and grabbed their own utensils, plates, napkins, etc. We sat there without menus for a good 10 mins. We also ordered korean fried calamari as an appetizer. It ended up coming at the same time as the sushi (30 mins after it was ready). The calamari was cold and stale also. I even asked the waitress if we were getting the calamari first and she said yes. It was supposed to be an appetizer so it's supposed to come first. I ended up ordering the shrimp with lobster sauce which was good. I have nothing to compare it to since I have never ordered that dish anywhere. My husband said the white rice was gross, but he still ate all of it. The only thing they know how to cook here is the typical chinese take out food. Everything else is gross. The table beside us ordered some type of curry which they didn't touch and a platter of sushi. I'm guessing their experience was just as bad as ours bc they kept shaking their heads also. Their sushi platter was done at the same time as my order and sat at the sushi chef's counter for 45 -60 mins. Completely horrendous! I also ordered shrimp shumai which was overcooked. It's pretty hard to get that wrong...take them out of the freezer and steam them. We both ordered dessert in order to spend $50 to use a Groupon we had. I had the red bean ice cream which was good bc they didn't make it. My husband had the fried banana with one scoop of vanilla ice cream. This is the worst fried banana I have ever seen. I was expecting a banana wrapped in come sort of spring roll wrapper and fried. What he got was one whole banana sliced, dipped in tempura batter and fried. It looked totally gross. In summary, this has to be the worst dining experience I have ever had. Groupon should not allow them to have another sale of coupons. I had mixed feelings about buying this groupon because the reviews were so mixed. It was a complete waste of money. The service was horrible. The waitress almost elbowed me in the face when she was cleaning our table. There was a table with 15 people that completely cause chaos tonight because these workers were running around like chickens with their heads cut off. The waitress is totally unprofessional interrupting and leaning over you instead of walking aroudn the table to set things down where there is a clear space. As someone who is well versed in authentic cuisine... has had some of the best sushi in Japan and in the US... I'm not going to lie and say this is "great" sushi. There are different classes of sushi in my opinion, and I always preface my reviews whenever I make them for restaurants like these. There are ridiculously expensive but premium quality fish that you find at places like Morimoto or little hole in the walls that have been Japanese-run for years and go to buy fish fresh from the boat on a daily basis. Then there's a step below that... one's that don't necessarily value the art of sushi as much as they do high quality, gourmet cuisine. Then a more than a few steps below that are restaurants like Tommy Cheng's. The fish was fresh. It wasn't the most amazing quality, but it tasted good and was clean. Considering I had gotten back to my hotel late, having such a fast and speedy delivery to my room was a nice plus. I ordered a Orange Dragon Roll and a Wayne Roll... which were obviously non-traditional dishes but nonetheless tasted rather good. I always find it charming to have disinterested people working in restaurants. Here at Tommy Cheng's, that "people" is always one person. You guessed it, the disinterested waiter is also the disinterested person at the front register handing out the take out, he's also the guy helping his kid, brought quite often to work, to download an app or play music loudly from his Phone. Don't worry, he didn't make his kid feel welcome either! When we pay to sit down and eat, it's not pleasant to have Mr. No Smiles tell you, no, we don't have the first four common things we try to order to drink. On to the food. The dark blue suede from my '79 Puma Clydes was wayy easier to chew on and stomach than the incisor impenetrable black colored "sea weed" surrounding our many rolls we ordered. It was like chewing on a fantastic bit of black nylon to get through to my fake crab meat. The second half of our oder (intended) was brought as an after thought to our meal at check time. Yup..out came our food cold and tasteless and dry disguised as a ten dollar order of rice distastefully plotzed on our table long after we were done hacking away on the plastic seaweed. It was fifty cents worth of food. A handful of hard cold uncooked "red and brown" rice with 2 tiny shards of broccoli and a thimble full of peas. If I wanted to win a miniature sand castle construction contest with these ingredients, now would be the time. At dinner time you should RUN from a restaurant with only one other table in it..but the glutton for food torture I obviously am, I stayed and promised my guests a better choice next time! Just ok. Nothing special. I got the house special pan fried noodle which comes with... you guessed it, pan fried noodles as well as chicken, beef, shrimp and veggies in a brown sauce. The chicken was ok and the shrimp was ok and actually quite large. The beef however, was absolutely disgusting. I can't even describe what it tasted like. I spit it right out.
