Tried Tommy's for lunch today. Wow, what a surprise! There is a reason they have the rating they have! Met by Tommy, his wife, and daughter when we came through the door. All had lovely smiles and a wonderful service attitude! We were directed through the line and ordered our food. My wife got the ribs and sausage. I got the brisket and sausage. I believe the had chicken and meatloaf too...but we didn't order it. For sides we got sweet potatoes, Mac n cheese, cucumber salad, o'gratin potatoes. The food was great! Ribs were not over seasons and very tender, brisket was cooked to perfection and SO tender, sausage was really good too! BBQ sauce was excellently spiced and sweet too. We both got corn bread, a little too thick for me and kinda dry...but I want there for cornbread. So much food we had to pack half of it up!! But look forward to the left overs. The place was clean and very comfortable and Tommy stopped by to make sure we were well taken care of and had everything we needed and we got to spend 5-10 minutes chatting with him. These are some of the nicest people I have ever met, and they showed genuine interest in connecting with their customers. They even brought our extra brisket when they were not 100% happy with their first batch (we thought both batches were amazing, but it shows their customer-focused priorities). I had heard of this place for 3 years by Austin TX locals saying if you ever go near Atlanta TX that I had to try this place and wow is it everything and more!!! I was in town for training and I made this my lunch stop for the day. It is family owned and I felt adopted the moment I walked in the entry way! This is the standard that is Barbecue. Everything about it tells you it is made with a real passion for quality and consistency. The family; father, mother and daughter all put energy into making this a success. I grabbed a tray, cup, and utensils. Proceeded to try their lemonade which was fine on this hot day. The 3 meat platter was a no-brainer. The presentation of piled meats made my eyes drool. I had the brisket, ribs and sausage which came very generously portioned. I was in heaven. I also added the sides of scalloped potatoes, greens, and fried okra. They supplied a biscuit to top it all off! Let's just say if your still reading and not driving there then my writing has failed! The flavor is everything I had hoped for and more! I gorged myself and felt like a glutton albeit a happy one! :) Once I thought I could have no more the daughter delivered me a cobbler topped with ice cream and whipped cream with cherry! Oh my goodness! I have to say I truly love this place. My meal was beyond fantastic however the family and their passion for their craft really had me. Upon entering, patrons snag a tray and work their way down the line of meats and sides like meatloaf, smoked chicken, sausage, ribs (truly the best you'll ever have), sliced beef, Mac and cheese (SO good), cowboy beans, green beans, scalloped potatoes and more. For dessert you'll find an array of cakes and pies made-in-house like coconut pie, strawberry cake and peach cobbler (option to add ice cream on top). They also make the rolls and cornbread in house. Be prepared to need a carry out box for this budget friendly and super tasty establishment. You'll easily find parking on site and enjoy the convenience of their I59 location. The best part of the entire experience was the warm hospitality of the owner, Tommy, and his staff/family. It was clear this business was chock full of locals and regulars who knew the owners and vice versa. Take note of the fun murals on all of the walls with celebrities and the staff depicted. My wife and I were camping at Atlanta State Park. I like to try local barbecue restaurants when we're traveling to different locations. Tommy's had pretty good ratings and reviews, so I decided to give it a try. I wish I had went somewhere else. I pulled into the empty parking lot at noon and parked. As soon as I walked in, I was asked to move my vehicle because I was parked in their drive through. This is when I should have left. There was absolutely nothing to indicate that they even had a drive through, no signage, nothing. Anyway, I moved my car and went back inside. Typical of many Texas barbecue joints, their service was cafeteria style. They didn't have potato salad, which is odd for Texas barbecue restaurants. I ordered brisket, beans and a roll. The lady seemed confused by my brisket order, but it is on their menu. I paid for my food and took a seat. The brisket wasn't really. It was mostly just chopped beef, drenched in what I believe was sloppy Joe sauce. The beans were straight out of a can. The roll was, well, it was a regular white roll, clearly delivered to them, so who cares. The lady did come and ask what I thought about the food. I told her it was edible, but wasn't typical of Texas barbecue, and certainly wasn't what I was expecting. I told her I was hoping for smoked sliced brisket, but they didn't have that. She maintained that I was eating brisket. She asked if I would like to try something else. So I asked if I could try one of their ribs. She brought me two. Also disappointing. They had been steaming for so long that they had lost their flavor. This is strange too, since it was noon. All of the food should have been really fresh. I was the only customer in the place for the hour that I was there. More disturbing than the food, was the employees talking about me while I was still sitting there, trying to eat enough that I wouldn't feel that I had wasted my money. The lady was telling the other employees that I didn't like their food. They went on about it, until I just got up and threw my plate away. Seldom have I had a more disappointing experience in a restaurant, especially a barbecue restaurant. I will never go back there. read more

We found Tommy's on Google as we were passing through town on Hwy 59 and decided to stop. We went through the cafeteria style line and between the two of us got chicken spaghetti, BBQ chicken, ribs, candied yams, cabbage, green beans, scallop potatoes and cornbread. Each dish was delicious!! Tasted homemade and so fresh! Generous portions completely filled us up! The ladies serving us were friendly and we enjoyed talking to them both. Great find! I got the 2 meat bbq plate. Ribs, brisket, cabbage, scalloped potatoes and a roll with sauce on the side. I cleaned my plate. Everything was delicious! Loved the tender, fall off the bone ribs dipped in the sweet but with a perfect spicy kick of the bbq sauce. My husband got the brisket sandwich, green beans, and Mac and cheese. He also cleaned his plate. So good! We overheard a couple people come in (I think locals) order the chicken spaghetti. So, I bet that is pretty tasty also. Sorry for no pictures. We pretty much scarfed down our food before any phones came out. We will be adding this place to a must stop for lunch anytime we are driving through. read more

I stopped after reading the reviews on 'Yelp' which has always proved positive. I'm from So IL home of the famous 17th Street BBQ which is an award-winning BBQ joint rated "Best Ribs in the U.S." by Bon Appétit Magazine. I seldom order ribs out am always disappointed, well let me tell you Tommy's even better, what a hidden gem. Ribs were so tender and delicious, just about fell off the bone, the brisket lean, tender, tasty (right up there with my favorite Austin TX 'Salt Lick') I'm often indifferent about sausage, but not anymore. They had a cafeteria line set up and had some pork ribs, brisket, sausage, baked and fried chicken, lima beans, green beans, mac and cheese, scalloped potatoes, cowboy beans with corn and your choice of corn bread or a roll. I am sure I missed a few things here and there. I chose a 2 meat with the sausage and ribs. I liked the smoke level and loved the sauce. The ribs were delicious and the sweet sausage was great too. The potatoes were a little rich but I devoured them and I also liked the cowboy beans. They were a little like a texas chili and I thought I got some ground beef in there. After they plated my meats they set out to sauce them and put them in the microwave and I had to stop them. I don't love this so if you similarly don't want your food in that box you should say something, they're happy to accommodate you. I will definitely be back on my way through. read more

So the other day I was thinking about how there really isn't any such thing as truly great BBQ in San Francisco, we're foodies, it's true, but we just don't do the whole barbeque thing properly. Thankfully I can get my fix when I go visit the grandparents. And so can you, provided you ever find yourself in the middle of no where East Texas. Tommy's appeared as a road side barbeque joint a few years ago when the highway 59 construction crew was moving through, but it's so good that it's stayed around, even after the construction crew is long gone. Tommy mans the barbeque, his sister Mozelle does sides and desserts, brisket, chicken, catfish, black eyed peas, greens, coconut pie, every fabulously delicious, extremely bad for you southern comfort food you can think of, they do it at Tommy's. We proceeded to ordering up our meals. Stopped here on my way to Nashville based on the review here and some reviews on other sites (one mentioned driving from Dallas just to eat here). When we walked in it looked very promising. Typically I find the more hole-in-the-wall a place looks like, the better the food. Sadly not the case here. Sides were bad, bbq chicken was bad, ribs were tiny (barely any met on them). Mashed potatoes came from a box and cornbread was totally tasteless. This place is not cheap either, I paid ten bucks for a tiny chicken breast, small corn on the cob (frozen not fresh) and instant mashed potatoes. Wish I had just kept driving. read more

You'll even get to meet old Tommy himself, along with his family who helps run the restaurant. And their food lives up to their service and hospitality. From meat by the pound, to scrumptious sides, to platters and sandwiches, it'll take you a while (10 minutes for us) to choose what you want. For meats, I suggest trying their brisket and ribs. Brisket is very moist and tasty, with just the perfect amount of fattiness. Be careful with their ribs because they may fall off the bone before it reaches your mouth. No fork and knife necessary. Tender, juicy, and melts in your mouth. I also tried their sausage, which was good, but could have used a bit more bite in the casing. Subtle flavor and filling. I ate here with my family as a group of 12. The service was great! The owner and his family are really pleasant people. BBQ was really good. Yes they did microwave my plate for a minute after they fixed it, but that didn't bother me. I'd much rather food getting a "warm up" than getting cold food. Tommy's BBQ Restaurant is just what the doctor ordered. They serve a great selection of entrees along with complimentary veggies. And the deserts.... Ummm. Tommy's is an "ole fashion restaurant" that takes you home as soon as you walk through the door. You're greeted with a smile and a hello. I'm originally from that region but now I call Arlington, TX, home. I visit that area when I can, but we've lost a lot of the older folk that prepared comfort foods in that special way, so it is always a treat to stop in at Tommy's to get a taste of times past.
