Definitely worth a visit! We enjoyed the fish (wow it was massive), clam cakes --actually had small pieces of clam! The R. I. Clear chowder was more refreshing than its heavier creamy cousin. Hot dogs and beef burgers for the carnivores (don't eat them, myself). Well landscaped with canvas tents providing shelter on a graveled lot (no indoor dining) about a hundred feet from the curb of a four lane high way with no natural shade. ORIGIN: Thomas Patrick opened Tommy's Clam Shack in 2013 as an expansion of his three decade long business, Dockside Seafood and Marketplace (opened since 1982), which is located in the neighboring lot. At opening the business was positioned for success with a well-established seafood chef, as well as a reliable stream of fresh fish and shellfish next door. LOCATION: The shack is located on a main thoroughfare and has ample parking and umbrella-shaded outdoor seating. CONCEPT: Tommy's Crab Shack serves a variety of seafood that reflect the culinary traditions of the state. The dishes are customizable (e.g. "extra lemon", "sauce on side") and are prepared for pick up only. SERVICE: Family size orders I have placed during both busy and non-busy times were ready within 20 minutes. EXPERIENCE: After remarking about how busy the shack is for years as my husband drove towards the beach I finally decided to stop and find out why! Although orders can be placed on site, I chose to use the link on the shack's website. It was easy to see and consider the many options this way. I strived to capture a range of dishes in hopes to find a favorite, and ordered clear clam chowder, clam cakes, Portuguese Hushie, hot lobster roll, fish and chips, calamari, and the fried seafood combination. In the end it was impossible to tease out a favorite! My only suggestion is to be sure to add some fresh produce (corn on cob, coleslaw, watermelon) to orders to offset the guilt and sensation of having multiple courses of fried seafood. Everything was well-prepared, and the prices were a relative bargain compared to water-front seafood restaurants. This resulted in no desire to explore other options. That said, I especially recommend trying their Rhode Island-style chowder as it is not typically available elsewhere. I found that without the mask of cream (New England style) nor tomato (Manhattan-style) the briny flavor of clams was more apparent. The Rhode Island-style calamari, which has sautéed slices of spicy cherry peppers, is also something worth experiencing. TIPS: Ask for sauces to be "on the side" if not dining on site in order to best preserve fried exterior texture. There are many picnic tables ready for customers' use, and the colors of the umbrellas, shack, and signage are evocative of summer in New England, with crisp white, cobalt blue and cherry red standing out against the pale gray shack cladding. This review is long overdue! So I took a day trip to Rhode Island last month and this state is known for its seafood! I'm personally not a huge fan of seafood but I love to try good food regardless. I heard of Tommy's clam shack and thought it was worth a try. I arrived mid evening and this place was packed!!! The line never ended even when I finished eating. I ordered the special Tommy trio which consist of half a lobster roll, 3 clam cakes and clam chowder. It was so freaking good. Fresh seafood that tasted amazing. The clam cakes were humongous and super filling. That was my favorite part of the meal. It was worth every penny. Do note that they have beer for sale when ordering your food but if you want a soda for example, there are vending machines to the right. They only accept cash and coins for those machines. When I visit Rhode Island again I know where I'm going!! read more

Fried seafood platter had the molded frozen fish filets and frozen shrimp, with bay scallops. This is not what they served in the past and definitely disappointing and not worth the price. It was a great night to eat dinner outdoors at Tommy's Clam Shack. We got here a little later than planned, and there was a line, but there were a few picnic tables available to sit at and enjoy dinner. We both ordered appetizers for our meal, which did not come with fries, which was ok because we ordered clam cakes instead. The amount of food in the appetizers were just enough along with the half dozen clam cakes. I had the fried smelts, which next time I would get with the hot peppers (which I do like) on the side. Hubby had the fried shrimp app, with about 18 decent size shrimp! The clam cakes are a nice size, and actually had clams in them!! We brought our own soft drinks, but we have also seen people bring wine, beer, etc. Tommy's also has a collection of alcoholic beverages, or soda and water from the vending machine. They used to be the best. Quality has really fallen. I ordered the Sea Scallop dinner, I wasnt phased with the $28 price. That seems to be the norm now. What i got was 6 small scallops with mediocre taste. Last week I got scallops from Chanplins. They were the best scallops I have ever had. So probably shouldn't try to compare them to the Tommy's meal. I will probably order again but never the scallops. I hope the fried whole belly clams are not a disappointment. read more

Chowder was great too if not a little salty. Lots of clams and potatoes done just right. Most places are all potatoes, and you have to struggle to find a bit of clam, but not here. I went to Tommy's after it was recommended by a co worker wanting Scallops which I wouldn't think was too much to ask for but it seems like a lot of places give you the bay scallops instead of the sea scallops and I ordered the sea scallops and they came back and they look like bass scallops. The clam chowder was thinner than I usually like but it was chalk full of clams and flavor . One of the best chowders I have had in RI. The clam Cakes are one of the best clam cakes I have had this year. They were not greasy and they have the most clams I have seen in a clam cake. The Portuguese stuffy lots of clams and flavor. Tommy's clam shack is a summer must in RI. Its on the way to Oakland beach and more affordable (or relatively more affordable than iggys) . We love getting their hot lobster roll, its the best thing we have had there, and fish and chips but wish the fish was a little more seasoned. We also got fish tacos which were good and tasty but not the best Ive had. Other times we have gotten local beer but this last visit I didn't see it so not sure if they stop selling. Plenty of parking and on nice days one usually has to wait a long line. Its easy to take your food to go or eat outside at the tables nice summer ambiance. It was a nice treat to eat outdoors at one of Tommy's umbrella covered tables and get some sun while staying cool under the shade. The large outdoor dining area has a very beachy vibe, which was nice especially since we haven't had time to hit the beach; I believe this is the main highlight of this literally tiny clam shack. My 12 yo daughter says she "wouldn't get a lobster roll anywhere else," and that "it's the best" at Tommy's. You get a huge sandwich for $17.99, which is quite possibly overstuffed with an entire lobster in one roll!! If you can't eat this much, I would probably recommend the Lobster Trio that includes 1/2 lobster roll, 3 clam cakes, and a cup of chowder--this is an incredible deal (I'm repeating what another reviewer wrote after kicking myself for not seeing this on the menu). Each clam cake is deep fried and very filling; ordering a dozen is another great price at $8.99, but it's meant to be shared among a group of 4 or more, IMO. The clam strips were delicious! On the receipt, I was charged for a Clam Strip Roll without the roll. (I thought this was funny because I was thinking that it was probably an appetizer option?). The portion was a bit on the scanty side. The man who served my food was thoughtful to warn me not to burn myself from the hot temperature of the deep fried items. Much appreciated. Huge parking available with easy access from the main road. Very laid back, casual atmosphere. Their sign says "Open Daily", but when I called yesterday I was told they were closed. They have a combo meal I always get -- the Tommy's trio. Get a 3/4 lobster roll, chowder, and three clam cakes. Love, love, love their lobster roll Husband loves the steamers and fried fish. So crispy and not too greasy. I'm taking a star off because their ambiance is very "boomer- like". They even had this DJ play the national anthem and ask everyone to stand. SO Awkward!! I ordered the Tommy's trio which is a STEAL. You get a lobster roll, 3 clam cakes and a cup of chowder all for $14.99. The lobster roll was really GOOD! The lobster was fresh and had a sweet taste. It was not stuffed with a giant piece of lettuce or mixed with too much mayo. My friend didn't care for the celery, but I didn't mind it. I also asked for some warm butter so I can put on top of the lobster roll. The warm butter made the lobster taste even richer. The clam cakes were delicious! It was crispy, strong clam taste and good chunks of clams inside. The clam chowder was full of flavor. Great amount of clams and not too thick or chunky full of potatoes. I also ordered the fried fish platter to share with my friends. The fish was fried perfectly, very crispy and tender, not dried out. There is a lot of outdoor seating which was really nice.
