On my recent trip to Rhode Island I was lucky enough to have my friend introduce me to RI staple food items. My experience with Roy Boy's was takeout and it was absolutely delicious. We got clam cakes and chowder - both red and white. I had never tried a clam cake but wow is it the most divine thing to break into while it's piping hot and dip into your chowder. I trie both the red and the white chowder and I loved them both. This seems like a great spot to grab takeout or a casual meal. Came on a Saturday afternoon and the place was pretty empty. The service was quick, and the food was great. The outdoor seating featured umbrellas to block sun or rain. The store adjacent to this also has ice cream - though I couldn't try as I was quite full from my meal. Ordered ahead on grub hub and the girl at the window told me when we got there that they didn't have the tablet, and they couldn't start making anything until we got there for whatever reason... So I had to tell her my order that had already been placed and paid for, and then they started making it. The wait was probably less than ten minutes. They have a small fenced in patio, and two of the tables have umbrellas which were taken. It was about 6pm and the angle of the sun offered some shade close to the fence where we sat. I'm a life long Rhode islander and I've eaten more home cooked stuffies and chowder than I have from tourist traps like this. The stuffies were ok, but they obviously came out of a fridge and just got thrown under a broiler. The bits of clam around the outside were rubberized, and the inside was just mushy and a lot of bread. Flavor/seasoning was decent overall though and had these been baked properly I might still give the stuffies themselves a 4/5. My wife ate the gagger and said it was ok. I'm not a Weiner snob, it just had the right toppings and looked fine. I ate the fried fish sandwich. There wasn't much tartar sauce at all, which was a let down for me. I liked the batter though, and the fish was cooked just right, not over done. The stuffies and the grub hub fiasco was enough to stop me from ever coming back. As we walked back to the car there was a guy at the ice cream window yelling into it "hello?!" Hilarious. This was 6pm on a Saturday in August and you're not at the top of your game? Roy Boy's Clam Shack - 6710 Post Rd, Kingstown, RI After spending the afternoon at Beavertail State Park in Jamestown, my wife and I were on the hunt for a new spot to eat nearby. She came across Roy Boy's Clam Shack, just a short 30-minute drive away, and we decided to give it a try. We were happy to see there wasn't much of a line when we arrived. My wife already had her eye on dessert--ice cream--before we even ordered dinner. She's been a lobster roll connoisseur for nearly 20 years, so of course, she went straight for the lobster roll. We also shared a large clam chowder, which was excellent--loaded with clams, not overloaded with potatoes, creamy but not too heavy. Now, the lobster roll. Photos don't do it justice. It was huge, packed with massive claw meat, lightly dressed with mayo--just the way she likes it. She gave it a solid 8/10! I went with the whole belly clams with fries and slaw. The coleslaw was creamy and tasty, the clams fried to perfection--crispy golden brown, tender inside, not greasy at all. Fries were just okay, but the clams were the real star. The tartar sauce was excellent, too. The vibe is super casual--roadside shack with plenty of outdoor seating. No frills, but the food makes up for it. The staff, mostly younger kids, were all very friendly and welcoming. To finish things off, my wife popped next door for dessert: a vanilla soft-serve dipped in chocolate, one of her childhood favorites. This place has evolved and is so much more than a clam shack. Recently, they've re-vamped and now offer sandwiches and pizza in addition to their trademark seafood. The pizza had a nice sweet sauce and was cooked well with a quality cheese and crust. Reasonable prices. Small cramped inside, so you're probably better off getting it to-go or sitting outside once it gets warmer. read more

I've driven by this spot so many times and always say to my husband we need to grab dinner there. We recently had family in town and they were in the mood for seafood and takeout was the best bet with my five year old. Enter Roy Boy's Clam Shack. Honestly it was pretty freaking delicious for quick and pretty fairly priced seafood. I got the steamers and it was a solid portion for the price. My husband enjoyed his fried clam roll as well. This recently opened clam shack doesn't have the views or the ambiance of South County/Galilee clam shacks (Post Road rather than beaches and harbors) but the food has the potential to give them a run for their money. We've only had their whole belly fried clams at this point - but they are definitely on-point! Non-greasy, lightly battered whole belly clams were quite good and fresh. Came with a nicely tart tarter sauce. A promising preview of summer. If you need a fried clam fix, Roy's will do quite admirably without having to trek all the way down Route 1 (and presumably avoid the crowds when tourist season starts). Roy's also does plenty of other Rhodie favorites like stuffies, fish & chips, fried calamari, doughboys, NY system weiners, as well as burgers, BLT's, and other sandwiches. Overall the food was good. Typical clam shack items and pricing. White chowder had a nice buttery taste and clam cakes were good. Food was ready in a reasonable amount of time. The downside (at least for me) was the seating area as it's located on Post Rd (Route 1) which is a busy 4 lane road. There's the loud traffic noise which isn't great for conversation but I can deal with it. However, the whole time I was eating I had anxiety about a car slamming into the eating area from the road as the traffic flies by at a high rate of speed. I was craving fried clams and had a delivery coupon so I thought I'd order from Roy Boy's. I ordered the entrée of fried clams and sea scallops. I was surprised it didn't come with anything but for an additional $3.99 I could get fries and coleslaw. Projected time of delivery was 30-60 minutes. I asked for contactless delivery with instructions to ring the doorbell and leave the bag on top of the package delivery box. The order came on time though the delivery person didn't ring the doorbell but stood outside the door yelling "hello! hello". I guess he finally saw the big brown plastic box with a package delivery sign on top and he left the food there. I was so happy to be getting seafood and figured if it came from a clam shack it had to be good. Well.... The clams were so over cooked they were all clumped together. The clams were also so hard from over frying they were almost impossible to chew. They were the consistency of dry/crunchy breakfast cereal. The scallops I think must have been old and frozen since they were mushy and the breading wouldn't stick to the scallop. Now remember the extra charge for fries and scallops? The fries were okay not good, not bad. A little soggy but that happens with delivery fries. The coleslaw was the only really good thing about the meal and you got about a tablespoon. The majority of the box of food was fries. A great disappointment. I do not recommend getting seafood delivered from this "Shack". I threw most of it away. Thankfully I had a gift card that paid for most of it. read more

I've been to Roy Boy's a few times as I live nearby. Each time, I've been extremely pleased with the quality of the food. The Cape Cod Reuben is my favorite so far. It's an incredible sandwich! Tonight we enjoyed clam chowder and clam cakes. The calamari fritters and regular calamari are excellent as well. Tasty, rich-bodied and delicious. Clam roll was good if unremarkable. The Not-So-Good: Clam cakes were heavy and greasy. French fries soggy and boring. The Ugly: When we asked for glasses of water the staff said they "weren't allowed" to provide them -- we could purchase bottled water. Wanted to tryout this new clam shack. I ordered the clam chowder and Cape Cod Rueben (I asked for no coleslaw). The lady repeated my order back correctly. It was too hot to eat outside, plus it smelled like tar, so I took it home. The potatoes in the chowder weren't cooked enough and had a crunchy mouth feel. And the Cape Cod Rueben had coleslaw on it. Sorry, but I won't be back. There are way too many good places for this kind of food around for me to give this place a second chance.
