I have played guitar and other instruments for a long time now; young but experienced and I own some high end guitars and equipment. Brought a Gibson acoustic and a Martin acoustic into Tommy's Guitar Shop and was exceptionally disappointed with their customer service on many levels. I needed a pickup swapped from one acoustic to the other, and a new pickup installed in one of them. I was questioned in terms of me knowing/being prepared to spend quite a bit. First of all, you shouldn't question how much money your customers have to spend when their walking in with thousands of dollars worth of gear... second, it's just rude to profile someone like that on spending a large or small amount. Second, Dylan (I think that's his name, unsure of spelling) kinda had no idea what he was talking about in the process of getting my guitars checked in and in putting together the work order. Pickup installs and setups should be a regular thing for a shop that offers luthier/repair work.. then the luthier talked about how he wouldn't be surprised if a chunk of wood came off my guitar top in removing a pickup... yes that's absolutely a possibility but if you're a good luthier, you know how to treat these scenarios and guitars to avoid that. And again, isn't this kind of work pretty regular? Pickup installs and setups should be some of the easiest jobs you could offer and simple enough to do with excellence. Third, I've never seen someone maneuver a guitar so aggressively in this kind of a setting. You don't grab a guitar out of a case, flip it, and put it back in the case carelessly, especially when you're holding thousands of dollars worth of gear in your hands AND IN FRONT of the gear owner.. I mean what are you doing dude? Then I was told that every other shop was going to be busier, as if that is a good reason for me to leave it with YOU? Lastly, I'm fully vaccinated and have not had to wear a mask most places recently. But I get it, some places are still requiring them; no big deal, but kindly ask me if I can come back with one of and then let me know you don't have any available unless for purchase instead of a blank and short "we are selling masks for $10"... Bummed this didn't work out. I would have loved to support a local shop, and I work with a lot of other musicians and could've spread the word about this place in a good way! Tommy's is the closest shop to my home and my workplace but I will gladly drive to American Music in Seattle now AND even wait a month to get my guitars back! For beginners, I would suggest going somewhere else... sure they may have cheap and expensive guitars but what you want in a shop is a place where people can point you in the right direction. My experience shows me they do not at Tommy's and therefore might not take care of you the way you deserve. You go to a shop as a beginner and ask lots of questions and you should receive the right answers and I just feel like you won't get that here. They'll just sell you something. For experienced musicians with high needs and or high end gear, go elsewhere. Don't leave your hard earned gear here, they don't care. Don't buy their gear either; who knows how it's been treated in the back or on the floor. read more

This is a really nice little shop tucked away across the street from the Everett Events Center. We always try to stop by before the hockey games if Tommy's is open. Tommy's has a selection of guitar pedals beyond belief, and they don't mind bringing them all out to show us when we stop in. Also, some very guitars and other gear. I always look forward to stopping in as the inventory is constantly changing and I like being surprised and wowed by the beautiful guitars hanging on the walls, and the very surprising selection of pedals. I have been a customer of Tommys for a few years and have always had great service. They're prices seem fair and the staff is always warm and friendly. I came in the other day to have my orange dual terror retubed. I assumed I'd just drop it off and come back in a week. Instead Kevin (the tube amp tech) wandered over and did it right then and there. Not only did he retube it in front of me but I got a full lesson on how tube amps work, how to visually inspect tubes and how different tubes can drastically change the final sound. I can't tell ya how many message boards I would have to read to get all the knowledge that Kevin crammed into the 45 minute session. It's clear the guys working here have given a good portion of their lives to the science of guitars and guitar sounds. I can guarantee you're not gonna get the same expertise in a chain music store. My son went in on Thursday and asked to test out a bass huitar. Tommy eventually let him try one out after waiting for around half an hour. He only got to play for 10 minutes or so before Tommy asked him to put it back. When he tried to ask Tommy about specific guitar neck types (he needs narrower frets because his hands are small and he gets cramps really easily trying to play), Tommy misunderstood and gave him information for how tall the fret bars are and how to shorten them. When my son tried to explain what he meant further after realising Tommy was confused, Tommy disregarded him and ignored him, so he left. 0/10 would not recommend this shop. 10/10 would recommend Guitar Center or Kenelley Keys. read more

Dude, this place is awesome. I come here every week for my lessons and they are awesome. Every time I come in for something else too the guys working in the store are super friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. Tommy is pretty dang cool too. The wildest thing is he has this big jar of his custom picks. Although they have a good selection of the normal brands and you can buy them individually (unlike some other places), the custom ones that have the shop's name on them are the best. Honestly. The crew here are friendly, and they do a good job setting up the instruments for that good first impression. I purchased a 2004 Gibson Standard double cutaway here a few months ago. It was priced pretty high, but the instrument was in very good condition, and was exactly what I wanted. They even worked with me on the price somewhat, so I walked away happy. Recently I just needed some strings, and their prices were lower than the big internet sites. They have a good selection of guitars in the shop at a wide price range. Has G&L Vox Fender vintage great pickups Breedlove and a REALLY GOOD selection of boutique pedals. they also do set ups for about $45. also will do trades for good gear fairly. Dont skip on these guys. Update: I traded my amps in here for a nice Vox Handwired amp. They trades are fairly steep since they need to make a profit so be prepared to get less than what you would get online, but you'll get money/trade value right then and there. Also, Tommy does mods on Pedals too. He fixed up my ProCo Rat real nice. You have to supply materials but he does good work. read more

I am an older (55 yrs old) beginner guitar player never having played...ever. I walked into Tommy's Guitar Shop and was met by Kyle. He immediately put me at ease about never having played before. I told him basically what I was looking for...a beginner electric guitar...and he put together a package for me without up selling to something expensive. I got exactly what I wanted because I may or may not have liked playing and didn't want to be out a huge amount of money. He got me into a guitar, an amp, gig bag, tuner and picks for a very reasonable amount. He introduced me to a guy who gives lessons. I love playing (still play like a beginner) and would absolutely recommend this guitar shop to anyone who is even thinking about picking up the instrument. I loved Tommy's! I had just mourned the loss of my keyboard and was searching to pick up a guitar. My first guitar experience left me very frustrated but I knew I had made a mistake in the purchase. I went to a Guitar Center and they just sold me a box kit as fast as they could then sent me on my way. Huge disaster. This time around I did a bunch of research picked up few guitars and brough a friend who guided me. Found what I liked in the sound, and feel. After learning what to look for I found that Tommy's to be the most valuable. Not only was everything set up beautifully, Tommy the owner was helpful along with his staff. Tommy's is a throw back to the days when guitar shops were run by guitar players with guitar players in mind. I have purchased a guitar, strings, had tech work done and purchased many smalls. I have always been treated like a visiting friend, including the very first time I stepped in the door. I can't even imagine any of the guys at this shop being egotistical or ignoring anyone in the shop. EVERY time I asked to play something on the wall it was no problem at all. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. I can't stand big box stores. Recommending corporate stores with high school kids trying to upsell me and talking to me like I don't know the difference between Squier and Fender quality is not my idea of good business. If some prefer that they have options. I would likely order strings etc. online before giving my business to those places. This place rocks! I took a break from guitar playing for a few years and have just gotten back into it and needed to get my "fleet" back into shape, so I decided to try Tommy's. I've trusted them with 5 guitars so far for setups and/or repairs (one of them an exceptionally rare left-handed Ibanez JS1200), and I've been mightily impressed! Kyle, Kevin and Terry have been super helpful and patient - Kevin is a human encyclopedia who walked me through the guts of several of my guitars and explained how the coil tapping system works (among other things), and just today Terry took the time to watch me play a guitar I was having some frustrating problems with in order to better understand how to perfectly dial in my setup - and then he proceeded to do exactly that. The fact that my setups are some weird sh!t (I'm right handed but play left-handed guitar strung upside down) doesn't faze these guys a bit. I've become a big fan. Extremely overpriced, and run by a couple of total a-holes. I've been in there twice, and both times I was treated terribly. I was in the market for a new guitar, as mine had been stolen, so I went in to check out what they had. After 20 minutes of the two guys behind the counter making it a point to not address me AT ALL, I left. I had $2600 to spend, and they lost that sale for being rude. The second time I went in, I just needed some strings, but the wannabe with little-man syndrome wanted to argue with me about the setup on my guitar. Let me reiterate, he wanted to tell me that my guitar, which he has never seen, needed a setup done at their shop. How did he know this? He ASSumed it. No, my custom Telecaster, which was fortunately NOT purchased at your store, does NOT need your crappy tech to do a set up--sell me the strings and stfu. Then, he wanted to argue with me about what kind of strings I should buy--I've been playing guitar for 33 years, likely 10 years longer than this kid has been alive--sell me the strings THAT I ASKED FOR and stfu. Will NEVER return, and will flip them the bird through the window every time I walk by in the future. read more
