My favorites are the ginger orange roughy dish and the spicey eggplant dish. Even their tea is better and more flavorful than the others. A surpriseingly peaceful restaurant in a crammed little mall-like space. Very clean. Great fishtank with "Nemo's" and other bright fish. Recommended by a semi-vegan friend. We had the spring rolls-good, but not great. Then noodles and chicken and tofu. The silkiest tofu I've tasted in a long time. Some sort of yellow, but not curry sauce. Very tasty. Also had the Hot and Sour soup. It was hot and it was sour. (That's a good thing) It could have used a little more tofu and chicken, but I added rice and it was perfect. So I got my car back yesterday and decided to take her for a spin over the GG Bridge. The first place I thought of was Tommy's Wok and my mouth immediately started to water. My BF and I drove over there (I hadn't been in 6 months, he hadn't been in 7 years) and sat in the outdoor patio area which was really lovely. For appetizers we ordered the paper-wrapped chicken and the hot and sour soup. I was surprised that the chicken was actually wrapped in tin foil, but it was soooooo juicy and flavorful. The hot and sour soup was absolutely TO DIE FOR, as well! It has to be hands down the best hot and sour soup I've ever tasted. It's not gelatinous and fake tasting like you can get at some places, but mouth-watering and peppery and just YUMMY. Just typing about it makes me want it. Our dinner's were awesome too. He got the mango chicken and I got the szechuan noodles with tofu. Again....YUM. The dishes were not laden with oil or MSG, but light and full of flavor and fresh ingredients. We finished as much of our meal as we could and all we did was sit back and say "WOW, that was amazing. Great idea." It's definitely better then any Chinese meal I've ever had in SF. Now the whole dinner was pricier than most of those, but totally worth it (and the $6 toll going back.) We also have leftovers. read more

Owner was horribly unprofessional and rude. I went in for dinner with my 2 kids and the host graciously sat us by their beautiful salt water tank. Being young kids, they were really excited and were a bit on the loud side. Instead of the owner coming over and asking me to try to keep the kid's a little quieter, she took a belligerent approach. She marched over, lips pursing and quivering, and basically yelled at me about the kids being loud. She proceeded to say that she will have to 'reject' us if it's still loud and that she's 'trying to run a business'. If she was polite about it, I would have had no problem at all. The only reason I stuck around for dinner was because the kids were still excited about being near the tank and my daughter was asking to come to dinner there for a while. Before leaving, I let the owner know about her rude behavior, and she apologized and said that she doesn't want to deal with this right now. Apparently, she just wanted to get me off her back. Well... she's got another thing coming if she thinks that that is enough. read more

I don't understand what people see in this mediocre restaurant. Strangest thing to me, it seems like someone removed the Szechuan pepper, star anise, ginger, and red chills from the kitchen, and replaced them all with fresh basil! There are as many dishes flavored with basil on the menu as you'd find in an average Thai restaurant. Also coconut milk? I love basil, but as far as I know it is not a big ingredient in Chinese cuisine; and I found most of what we ordered to have an odd mixture of flavors and ingredients. The dishes marked "hot!" were bland. The tables and chairs would be at home in a food court. I doubt that any of the dim-sum or noodles are house made. There must be someplace better to go for Chinese food with its culinary soul more intact. read more

I'll echo another reviewer. This is not good Chinese food. It's not terrible tasting food it's just bland tasting food. I've grown up eating Americanized Chinese food and authentic Chinese food and well... This doesn't hit either. Our family has enjoyed Tommy's routinely for years, as locals. The staff is very nice, the food is consistently fresh and more like home cooking than many restaurants. If you get sweet and sour pork, true, it will be quite sweet (and I like that). If you want more down-to-earth, though, try the eggplant, the braised tofu or my favorite, seafood combination curry. There's something on the menu more almost any taste. We also love that you can watch them cook everything; it's nice show as we wait for take-out. read more

I checked the food reviews on yelp and ordered a few things that were recommended. When I arrived, my dinner consisting of two entrées plus rice was $42 instead of $32, which was surprising. When I asked about it, the prices were much higher than those listed online. The manager happened to be standing there, and told me that she wasn't responsible for the prices online (yelp) - she didn't know anything about it. I showed her the prices that were listed, and she just said I don't know. Although I wasn't asking her to adhere to the prices as listed, I did ask if she would offer a discount and she refused. Seems like very poor customer service and a poor approach to business. I realize this is Marin, but a $10 difference on a small meal is substantial, and an attitude of not caring and not being responsible for your business also leaves a substantial impression. read more

Well, okay, I'm no expert on Chinese food but I did grow up on my grandmother's and mother's Chinese cooking. What with it's culture of food centered celebrations, I've eaten Chinese at hundreds of wedding banquets, red egg & ginger parties, birthdays and new year celebrations. I suspect my experiences with this cuisine is deeper than most of the reviews I've read. That being said, I went into this restaurant thinking I'd be disappointed. How can a Sausalito restaurant serve authentic Chinese cuisine? After all I was the only Asian in the restaurant that wasn't waiting on tables or related to the owner. Well, it wasn't that bad. In fact it was quite good, given the no MSG and organic bent of the place. We're in Marin after all. The food was not great but I like the organic food bent and the lack of MSG. (It can be argued iChinese food can never be great without MSG. My grandmother had a 5 gallon bucket of the stuff and a big scoop to dole it out.) It's got a nice outdoor terrace for al'fresco dining. But wait, the big fish tank in the entranceway is strangely filled with coral and coral reef fish. In any proper Chinese restaurant it would be teeming with the characters on the menu. I guess we are in Kansas after all, Toto. Bottom line, I'd go again and wouldn't feel bad about it healthwise but then it would make the old lady spin in her grave, god rest her soul. read more

This place is super expensive, but with limited choices I have during lunch hour, I would frequent this restaurant. Their food is a tad on the salty side, but I do give them kudos for trying to be healthy. Although my most recent experience left me wanting to gag and never return. They botch my lunch order and didn't give me rice. When I called to ask about it (and it may be an honest mistake on their part) the waiter "Erin" answered the phone and basically said it was my fault, even though he wasn't the one who helped me and offered me this off the menu lunch combo. Then when I arrive to pickup the rice. He cut me off in the middle of talking to him to help another person. I notice it was white rice and not brown as I had asked for. I then ask for chopsticks which I even thank him for (I stayed pleasant even though he was very rude) I asked for his name before I left and as I was walking out, he said I was "crazy" to another customer. I'm just glad it is an exhibition kitchen so he couldn't spit in my food. I am never going back there again. read more

Was seated right away and with smiles, but found the food bland. I took a friend I had not seen for a long time for her birthday dinner and we sat there for 1 hour 45 minutes chatting while eating. Probably too long. We finally gathered our purses and coats when the head waiter scooted over to our table, practically blocking us from getting up properly, to instruct his team to start clearing our table immediately while we were still getting up. Very rude. I was embarrassed. I will probably never go there again--no brainer on that one. But later my friend confessed what I was thinking: the food was not very savory. We usually hit Tommy's Wok on the way home from SF to Sebastopol. Based on my latest visit, this place is now my favorite Chinese Restaurant in the Bay Area! The last meal I had here was simply spectacular! The Pot Stickers are house made and fabulous. We also had Hunan Prawns which was to die for! Well, the Gods are smiling on you. You are either an extremely lucky person or tonight is your lucky night or you have just researched your way to... a perfect Chinese food experience. Who am I? How should I know this? Well, I have lived in the Bay Area all my life, am a fan of Chinese in general, have eaten more than my share, and....I have been to China. Tommy's Wok is still freshest, most flavorful, more delicious.... and China could learn a few things. It is hands down the best Chinese food I have ever had. Anyone who says differently is either working for the competition, jealous, or just plain bitter that anything on earth could be this perfect. Granted, the view from the restaurant could be better (you look at a parking lot) so it may not be the most romantic, seductive locale...but Chinese restaurants are rarely known for their flare for romance. Go there to eat. Go there to feel like you are in a clean modern environment. Go there to be healthy. Go there to look at the tropical fish tank. Go there to be impressed.
