Ditch the crowd and madness...and order take out. It sometimes hard to get through but be patient. Then place your order and it'll be ready to be picked. Very seamless and effective. Take it straight home for freshness, and you'll have a grubbin meal. Depending on how much you order, it can add up. But it'll all be worth it. Never disappointed with any dish.

San Tung was a childhood stable of mine. My mom used to bring my siblings and I here weekly, sometimes, twice a week, so she became buddies with the workers. This was way before Yelp became a platform for foodies and service was attentive to our needs where we never felt rushed and had excellent customer services. My mom would always order the same things: dry fried chicken wings, dry sautéed green beans, shrimp and leek dumplings, pork dumplings, potstickers, and the beef noodle soup! More than 30 years later, this was still a place we recommend to families and friends and for those craving chicken wings or new to the city! Personally, I have brought a lot of friends from all over the world to try this place. Even my husband now (who was my high school boyfriend), never tried San Tung until he ate here with my family and I. Now, it became one of his favorite restaurants! My husband and I finally came back, but this time, we brought our two young toddlers. Of course we came here for the dry fried chicken wings and dumplings. The vibe was different compared to before since it became a famous tourist trap! Waiting time could be as long as two hours but luckily, we only waited less than 30 minutes that day. There were also more closing days in a week and the workers were rushing and looked stressed. An order of the dry fried chicken wings took 30 minutes. Back then, every table you looked at had chicken wings. Now, the demographic changed and there were more non-Asians eating here with less tables ordering chicken wings. We ordered our favorites: dry fried chicken wings, dry sautéed green beans, shrimp and leek dumplings, pork dumplings, potstickers, and noodles with peanut sauce. At the first bite of everything, I was brought back to my childhood. Now I remembered the shrimp and leek dumplings tasted better than their pork dumplings, the potstickers were huge but not very tasty, dried sautéed green beans and dry fried chicken wings were still the best, and the noodles with peanut sauce were somewhat spicy (not ideal for toddlers). We also tried the dry fried fish which was similar sauce to the dry fried chicken wings and was very crispy and good! Overall, I would still come back for their dry fried chicken wings, dry fried flounder, dry sautéed green beans, and the shrimp and leek dumplings!

I've been wanting to try this place for the last four years, and I finally made the trip from the East Bay to the Bay Area just to eat here. I can honestly say it was well worth the drive! This place is always busy, and now I understand why. You have the option of sharing a table or waiting for your own. Honestly, since the tables are all pretty close together anyway, sharing a table is a great way to get seated faster. Once we were seated, we ordered their famous chicken wings, the Mongolian beef lunch special with white rice, and a bowl of hot and sour soup. Everything was outstanding. The food was fresh, flavorful, and definitely a step above most Chinese restaurants. You can tell they take pride in the quality of their food. The chicken wings are absolutely the star of the show and deserve all the hype they get. Crispy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked they alone are worth the trip. Despite how busy the restaurant is, the service runs like a well-oiled machine. The staff is constantly clearing tables, keeping things moving, and making sure guests are taken care of. Our food arrived quickly and tasted freshly made. Overall, this place lived up to the expectations I built over the last four years. Great food, efficient service, and a lively atmosphere. I'll definitely be coming back and highly recommend it to anyone looking for quality Chinese food.

So we finally got here! The line was long, but honestly the wait wasn't bad at all -- probably only around 30 minutes considering how far down we were on the waitlist. Once they started calling tables, it moved really fast. When we were seated, we ended up sharing a table with two other groups of two. I actually didn't mind it at all because there was still enough space between everyone to have privacy. It also made the experience feel more social -- I ended up chatting with the people to my right and left about the food. Everything we ordered was really good. Their popular dry fried chicken absolutely lived up to the hype and was probably my favorite thing on the menu... besides the cherry pork. I feel like nobody talks about the cherry pork enough! It was SO good -- kind of like a sweet-and-sour pork without the sour. I dipped it in soy sauce because I loved the sweet and salty combo together. The dumplings were also really good. The wrapper was thin and delicious, but my boyfriend said he wished they had a little more protein filling and less leek. The green beans are always a hit. The only thing I probably wouldn't order again was the black bean sauce noodles. Maybe I just expected a different flavor, but to me they honestly tasted like regular lo mein. I'm also not a huge noodle person in general, so I'd probably skip them next time and order something else instead. Forgot to mention their prices are on point! Definitely recommend to any of the tourists. I think the weight is definitely worth it and I love being able to take home my leftovers and eating them for lunch and dinner the next day.

Brought some family who have never been and they enjoyed the infamous dry chicken wings, eggplant and fish filets in that order. Hot take, although I like the wings I def don't think they're the best I've ever had in the city. I liked that the eggplant skin was pre-peeled and it was a generous amount. I'd skip the fish bc it was fried with a candied skin with the same flavor as the wings which wasn't what I expected. Note we came during lunch so if you're getting the wings just pay $5 more for double the wings (12 instead of 6) rather than get the lunch special if there's a large party. Staff attentive and friendly.

Settling into SF and trying as many neighborhood staples as possible, and San Tung absolutely feels like one of those classic spots that's been getting it right for a long time. The place was packed at lunch, which is usually the best sign, but turnover was quick and I was seated faster than expected. The lunch special is a solid value with soup, rice, and an entree included. Started with the hot and sour soup which had good balance and depth without being overly thick or aggressive on the vinegar. The dry fried beef was tasty. Great texture, nicely cooked, layered flavor, and the kind of dish that keeps you reaching back in even after you're full. Service was efficient, food came out quickly, and the whole place has that old school neighborhood energy that makes you understand why it stays busy. Not trying to reinvent anything, just executing the classics well.

San Tung - what can be said that hasn't been written a thousand times over? A San Francisco institution and gem. 75 minute wait for a large group of friends (7-8) on a Monday evening. Always well worth the wait! Highlights are of course the famous crispy dry fried chicken wings that no competitor has truly perfected or copied, the dry fried beef (I may enjoy this more than the chicken!) and dry fried string beans. Be prepared to wait and possibly make friends at a communal table. Oh San Tung, never change.

We ordered two small soups and the fried chicken wings. Tomato Soup and Egg Drop Soup: For a small, they were quite generous with the portion size. Definitely could have ordered one to share. Both were flavored quite well and enjoyable. San Tung Fried Chicken: I heard the fried chicken was a must-try, but it wasn't for me. It was far too sweet for me and just reminded me of korean fried chicken. I don't prefer my protein on the sweet side, and these left a jarring sweet aftertaste in my mouth I did not enjoy. I will not be back for the wings but would be interested in other things. The prices appear to be a bit more expensive for Chinese food, but the portion sizes are slightly larger than average.

Genuinely some of the worst Chinese food I've had in the city. I've had San Tungs for takeout in the past but wanted to give it another go dining in person. Sad to say, I will not be coming here again. I truly do not understand how this place is hyped up. For food we got: - hot and sour soup: liked the shrimp in it, the "hot" is just a ton of black pepper. Would not recommend just not good. - mushroom & bok choy: sauce tasted kinda gooey, and the mushrooms were soggy. - shrimp chow mein with homemade noodle: literally just salty noodles, no flavor to noodles or shrimp besides being way too salty - dry fried wings: only thing I semi enjoyed, still way too salty. Good at first but would not go back for them or anything else. Service is average for a joint like this. It's fast and to the point so not docking any stars there. They do a great job moving the like quickly. Ambiance is crowded and loud, it's a popular joint so expect to share tables with other parties etc. If you're looking for flavorful, authentic, and delicious Chinese food with a good ambiance and service go to Dynasty Dumpling on California, 100x better.

On a Sunday evening, I ordered a take out from here. I went for the fan favorite - original dry fried chicken. It was crispy and flavorful without being too spicy. It stayed warm for an hour. It reaheated well next day. I got my order ready in about 20 minutes. The place was packed. Had I tried to dine in, it would have been a long wait.

I have been yearning to try San Tung for the longest time ever since I heard of their bomb.com chicken wings, and we finally had the chance to try it. Well let's just say the hype is real. We arrived on a Monday right when they opened at 11 am. The restaurant was already busy, but we managed to be seated as we walked in. That was just our luck, because within minutes, there were large groups arriving and more groups on the waitlist. We wanted something else to go with the chicken wings, and I also heard their jajiangmian was pretty good, so we ordered that along with the original dry fried chicken. We were served tea and water, and our server was friendly and efficient. There was a nice selection of condiments at our table as well, but we didn't need them of course. Watching the staff, they were very on top of everything, which was to be expected, given how famous this restaurant is. I saw they even had a station set up for to-go orders for people to grab utensils, napkins, and condiments. Very streamlined. The noodles with black bean sauce were first to arrive, and the dish was packed with meat and seafood. The noodles were perfectly bouncy and chewy, and the meat was tender. The black bean sauce was solid. It reminded me of the jajiangmian I've had at San Wang (which iykyk). It was the perfect potion for sharing and we quickly devoured it all. Then the star of the show arrived, the original dry fried chicken. We opted for the wings and they came in a sticky, lick-your-finger delicious, garlicky sauce that left me wanting more. I particularly enjoyed ripping the meat off the bones and dipping it into the extra sauce. These were nothing like I have ever had. My husband, who has had way more wings than I've had (as I'm not usually a wing kind of girl), said these were hands down some of the best wings he's ever had. You'll want to ask for more napkins, because trust me, that sticky sauce gets pretty messy (and stays on your fingers). Now I see why our server asked if we wanted to order some rice, because that sauce would have been so good over rice. But even without rice, we managed to clean up that plate nicely and left only bones. Bones that were gnawed on and savored of course. As I type this, I'm thinking about the next chance we can get to go back to San Tung. I'm glad we chose a weekday, because I cannot imagine having to wait forever for a table. We will most definitely be back!!

San Tung Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - San Tung

    Anyone been here recently?

Yes last month and haven't been in decades and they're still busy and food is still good.

Does San Tung use MSG on their dishes?

Yes, but they only use organic, non-GMO, farm-to-table MSG. Do you have any other dumb questions?

Will San tung be open on Christmas Day?

No, they are not open on Christmas day. Great food!!

Do you do a Party Platter? How much is the dry wings party platter?

I ordered the deep-fried wings (1 dozen) and the price was $19.95. I went there the week of Christmas. The wings were fabulous!!

Do they ever run out of their wings?

Have not experienced it before. I guess to be safe, can call and ask.

Will they be open during Lunar New Year?

not sure but my guess is no - they were closed on Columbus Day 2022 haha

Do they still do online orders?

    Their website indicates they do.

Why is it temporary closed and when will it reopen? Need that fix!

Not sure why it says temporarily closed, but they were open on Saturday 7/8/23.

What is the recommended attire for dining at your establishment?

Something you don't mind wearing outside in the cold for an hour, because that's likely to be how long you'll be waiting for a table.

    Do they take reservations?

    No they don't.

How many wings with each order?

It varies but usually about 10 which is fine when they're decent wings and drumettes, but I've had to-go orders when the wings were scrawny, just skin & bones, hardly any meat, in which case even getting 10 was not a good deal.

Has the wing recipe changed recently?

Not that I’m aware of, but after my first experience I’d never go back.

    Do San Tung take Reservations?

No, there is a sign up sheet just inside the entrance.

    Are you closed on Wednesdays?

    No they are opened

Is this restaurant located in Chinatown?

nope! san tung is located closer to golden gate park in the inner sunset area!

    Are they open Sunday?

Usually, yes! Unless they go on vacation

Did anybody know what hidden fee that they charge? I grab their take out a bit often but never pay…

When you order from their website, they charge a 4% service charge.

How long is the wait for Saturday lunch?

    usually 20~ min

    Open for dine in now?

Yes! Open for dine in now! Hurry before everyone finds out!

Why cant i order online for the next day? It is just letting me order on Fridays?

San Tung is closed on Wed and Thursday's.
