It's topped with fresh lemon and is honestly one of the best sushi rolls I've ever had. The scallop hand roll was another standout--fresh, buttery, and packed with flavor. Simple, incredibly fresh ingredients done right. Don't skip the cooked mussels either--they were incredible and full of flavor. The prices are fair. I feel like you shouldn't have to wait 30 minutes to get your food and sushi place and I do like getting some cooked scallops with the food, but the menu didn't say anything about it being fried it taste like the kind of fried that used oil that has been reused too many times. Add that to the fact that the waitress made a mistake on my order, and then told me it would take the same amount as the usual time, proposing that they go a little quicker this time to get me a fixed version. Though the crab roll was good, overall it kind of left a bad taste in my mouth, pun not originally intended. My boyfriend and I have been here three times in a very short amount of time. Their sushi is very good. We both really like how the special rolls aren't drowned in sauce; sometimes that makes it seem like they're trying to hide lower quality fish. I really love their sesame salad dressing and the salmon especially is to die for (but I'm biased). I tend to get anxious in dim, loud restaurants but this restaurant has a great atmosphere. I actually feel quite relaxed and it's never overly loud. Even when it's busy, we are always quickly seated but I'm sure it helps that it's just the two of us as opposed to a family or larger party. We decided to try a new sushi place last night. We arrived an hour before closing as it was the only sushi place that was open around the area past 9 PM because we don't like to arrive at restaurants less than 30 minutes before they close. We were seated quickly, and they brought us out water as soon as we got in. The establishment was very clean and the bathrooms were very spacious. We ordered calamari, shrimp, tempura, dynamite roll, because they were out of the BCR, and they said that was similar, and the Alaskan roll, which we thought was gonna be cooked salmon, but it was raw salmon on top and that's fine because it was very delicious. My father was joining and he is a regular at this location and I knew once he joined us we would want to sit at the bar. So, I asked and said... I don't understand, you literally just told us we can't sit at the bar. And the waitress looked at me awkwardly and said 'everyone except that man'. To make matters worse the restaurant was mostly empty and the bar was totally empty. This has happened to us multiple times in a row and that is why I am bringing it up. Very little seating not ideal for big parties, more of an intimate setting. Service can be a hit or miss, depending on how busy it may be. I've came the day before Thanksgiving and had no problems being seated. I've been here the day before Valentines Day and that was a little chaotic, rightly so. Food wise my favorites are the mushroom appetizer. When they say assortment of mushrooms they mean it! So the first time I went the mushrooms had amazing flavor in a sauce. Although the second time there was no sauce or seasoning. The amberjack is my favorite. I had it the first visit but the second I was a little disappointed because they gave us yellowtail which can look like amberjack but definitely does not taste like it. I didn't want to complain but still great quality & fresh. My thing is if u dont have something don't try and deceive ur customers. Sake bombs were top quailty, sake & beer were at a decent price. Now here is my biggest complaint. We spent quite a bit on dinner a little bit over $230. So it wasnt like we got a roll and left. We later found out that we were charged not 2x but 3X! So imagine having to wait for $460 to be refunded DAYS AFTER. My bf was not happy. When he called they told him something was wrong w the system and multiple customers got charged multiple times. I don't think it's an excuse. It was charged 3x not just 2x. I truly want to return and maybe we might but my 2nd experience was not as good as the first. Located between a dry cleaners and a Starbucks in a giant plaza in Westlake Village, Tomodachi seems out of place. The quality is great and the prices are quite high. I'd expect a sushi joint like this to be in Studio City or Sawtelle, but here it is. Tomodachi knows its worth, too. Small, basic rolls vary from about $6 to $9 - that's quite a lot for five whole pieces. Larger, specialty rolls are about $15 to $18. This is definitely a pricey place for lunch or dinner. The fish is good, though, so there's that. If you don't want nigiri, I suggest going with a basic roll like a scallop cut roll or a salmon cut roll - items that allow the fish to shine. Their specialty rolls, as adorable as they are, prioritize heavy sauces over quality. As far as lunch specials go - meh. They do have a vegetarian lunch special, for what it's worth. Not a common idea, so I do commend Tomodachi for that. I've come in during peak lunch hours - 11:30am-1pm - and it's always been packed. Not packed enough that I had to wait, mind you, but every seat in the house gets filled. Service can lag and the food takes quite a long time to be prepared. If you only have an hour for lunch, be sure to call ahead to pick up an order. Typically, I like takeout better than dining in. The best part - they prepare takeout orders in this cute little platter with a designated sauce holder in the middle. No cheap Styrofoam boxes around here! The platters are durable and chic, too. I usually get 3 or 4 basic cut rolls and they all fit in one platter. That single platter ends up being about $30 for a handful of rolls - so obviously lunches here are a rare occasion. That is way too much in an area with decent competition. They close at 2pm and reopen at 5pm. If you call in an order right before they close, you will have to come in before 2pm to get it. I would budget 10-15 minutes for the order to be made. Come on time or they won't be too happy with you. A plus - ample, ample parking in the plaza parking lot. read more
