This place is great! Hidden gem. It's extremely clean and the setting is straight forward, making the sushi the focus with no tricks or distractions. The fish was FRESH, no need for insane sauces and dips because the fish is perfect and the chef knows this. Tony (the chef) is well educated and knows what he's doing when it comes to proper sushi preparation. Everything was excellent from the garlic oysters, tempura, Spanish mackerel, Japanese scallops, Santa Barbara Uni, toro, and more. Did I mention that Tony is the NICEST guy and the owner, Jeff, is very warm & kind as well? That just seals the deal, if you ask me. What a cute spot! We came in on a Friday night around 6. It's busy so try and make a reservation! First off we couldn't stop drooling over how fresh and yummy the fish was. The salmon sushi literally melted in my mouth. The toro was to die for and the tony hawk roll was incredible. Other stand outs were our friend's scallop hand rolls and crispy rice trio. Came in an hour before they opened was empty so got seated right away. The restaurant looks big but there's a little bit seating here and there but they do take out as well! There is also plenty parking in front of the store as well. There was a lot of special going on. Got some oysters from the specials then some sushi! The service was very fast and everyone was very friendly. The oyster was so delicious and the sushi tasted amazing! The taste of the sushi is way better than back home. Enjoyed everything! I'm surprised how the uni sushi was about $8/$9 and it came with a lot of uni and it tasted great! I would highly recommend this place if you're in the area! It does get super busy around late dinner time! By the time we got our sushi it was getting super busy but the wait wasnt that long since everything came out very fast! We had the best Valentine's Day dinner tonight! Our names were waiting for us at the sushi bar when we walked in, so nice they take reservations for the sushi bar now! What a nice change! They treat us like family with so much welcoming warmth & love. The food was amazing, everything so fresh and in abundance not running out of anything. The service was on point! The new owner Jeff is doing such wonderful things there... I see so many great changes. You still see the old familiar faces like the wait staff & behind the sushi bar like my all-time favorite sushi king RAUL, and Tony... Joel is also making sushi rolls now and doing so good! I've tried Sushi Oaks three times at this point, but I really don't think the food justifies the price. There is usually a wait on Friday nights and weekends, so I have ordered the food to-go multiple times. The workers are always super nice, and I have yet to run into mistake in my order. However, the cuts of fish are really thin for some of the items, such as the salmon sashimi and Japanese scallop nigiri, to the point where the price just doesn't feel worth it. The quality of the fish is probably better than most sushi places in the area, but it's nothing super spectacular. The first time I tried the Lime Zest Halibut, I really enjoyed it, but the second time I tried it, the lime zest was a lot less aromatic. I've also tried a couple rolls with garlic soy sauce, but the garlic soy is extremely salty and drowns out the flavor of the fish. Overall, I would probably pass next time. read more

What an amazing story and introduction. I moved from the Valley to Camarillo over two years ago. I shop at Smart & Final weekly which is in the same shopping center. Last night I decided to go. I am a big time sushi eater. I know the difference between quality fish and not so good fish. I met the entire crew. The Sushi is sensational. Every piece of fish I had ordered was some of the finest I have ever had. The service and the environment were completely genuine and inviting. This sushi spot is now going to be my sushi home from now on. They have been at the same location for almost 30 years. To me that speaks volumes. This is the first review I have ever written but it needs to be read, hopefully by the new owner. I have enjoyed Sushi Oaks for over 20 years. When they closed I was bummed. When they re-opened I was stoked. I ordered $50 of sushi and a roll to pick up. When I got home the sushi was dried out on the edges and small. The roll I ordered was missing half and was flavorless. Maybe Sushi Oaks doesn't put effort into take out and has a better in house experience. I cannot recommend this restaurant for take out. read more

I have to say Sushi Oaks is such a pleasant surprise. I've been disappointed at the local sushi quality in Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks. After trying Sushi Oaks for the first time in many years, I have to say Sushi Oaks has the best sushi I've had in many years. The Resturant was absolutely packed on Thursday evening with a line outside waiting to get in. I ordered tuna sushi, tuna roll, and Japanese mackerel pickled perfectly and also an order of tempura. Every item was prepared perfectly. I haven't enjoyed sushi from local Japanese restaurants in quite a while. I will order from Sushi Oaks again in the near future. read more

A family recommended this place for sushi so we decided to try it even though it is not our usual place to go for sushi. We had a 30 minute wait to be seated and we were fifth in line when we arrived around 6 PM. There were five more people in front of us, and five more behind us on the waitlist to be seated because it is a very small location. For appetizers we tried the gyoza and green mussels and my 7 year old swallowed those up. Mussels were soooo juicy and sweet with the eel or teriyaki sauce and special mayo they used and garnished with sticky white rice underneath that tasted delicious mixed in with the mussel sauce. We ordered the chicken ramen and it came even before the appetizers and it's a huge portion because we shared between two adults and a child and it really filled us up. The sushi rolls we got were the maguire which was tangy and had raw fish but that's the one that was recommended to us and it was topped with thin onions so it was delicious. The bird hand roll was so good and spicy! I would've like the California roll with no sesame seeds but that's fine. Overall, service was top notch and food tasted excellent. I HAVE TO commend the whole staff from host to bussers to servers to chefs because they were non-stop busy and they were not only being friendly but they were just top notch in every way. They kept the place clean, the plates coming out, refills and got us everything we requested quick! Just excellent service! Tipped them 25%. Well deserved! read more

First off there are new owners which we found out at the end of the meal. We have been coming for years and the sushi has been the best in the Conejo Valley. Tonight not so much. The salmon was tough, the tuna was not like any I have had there. It looked like it was in sections held together by strands. It had zero flavor. The yellow tail was good but the miso soup seemed like it had been watered down. Service was merely perfunctory, There was no check in during the meal. At the end we were presented with the bill and a payment device which had differing amounts. When questioned the server told me the new owners were charging a convenience fee for using a card. The device gave a choice of cash or card but when selecting cash the amount did not change. The fee was almost 4%. Sorry to say we will miss going to one of our favorite spots for special occasions. read more

Been going here for 30 YEARS!!! First time with new owners ... what a DIFFERENCE!!! In a BAD way... first 2 items were wrong , but they fixed them , ordered spicy salmon came out regular but the fixed it and it was perfect, then came the hamachi which is my absolute favorite thing I eat here, I usually get 3 orders just for myself! It didn't look anything like the other 5000 pieces I've eaten there , and it DEFINITELY didn't taste the same , lobster salad crisp rice was runny and the rice block was cold and hard as hell !!! Then the tempura appetizer came out , it was awesome! Next was the maguire roll , tasted totally different than before , like it was missing something???? Next was the Uni, it was good but not as big as before, then the Japanese scallops, perfect but only 2 small pieces, I also ordered the Tokyo wings which I've had many time before... OMG they were absolutely abysmal!!! Hard , dry, dark meat, NOBODY finished a piece... I really hope this was growing pains because I ONLY eat sushi here ! Terrible!!! I got MAJOR food poisoning from simply ordering their crispy rice spicy tuna, and salmon roll with asparagus on 2/29/24. I couldn't digest the food at all and then I ended up vomiting all night. The food quality did not taste so good either, the crispy rice was way too hard. Food is very good but there are a couple of things to note... Sushi bar is closed. I like the "at the bar" experience and interaction with the chef. It certainly is not required if all you want is food. Not sure if I would want to sit at the bar as the owner/main chef never smiles...ever. Very slow service. I have eaten "in" and it was slow but making take-out order can be absurd. I called in an order recently and was told I could pick up in 1 hour and 45 minutes.
