I'm a dentist, and I love my dentist and hygienist! Julie is the best hygienist...so conscientious and caring with lots of experience! She's thorough, but also non-judgmental when you're home care isn't perfect. I'm always comfortable in her chair. Dr. Phillips is a highly trained cosmetic dentist that I sought out to do my work, now that I'm retired. So far, she's done one crown and it's my favorite! I went to Tonka Smiles for a cleaning and exam back in 10/2025. They are in network with the HealthPartners dental insurance I had at the time and offer nitrous. As someone who prefers female dentists, I love that the staff is all women. :) The team - Dr. Phillips, Julie, RDH, Kara, RDA, and the front desk staff - are friendly and thorough. The main reason this rating is 4 rather than 5 stars is that I felt they recommended work I didn't really need, specifically a crown. Dr. Philips recommended a crown on my bottom right molar where I had a root canal in 11/2017. I'm 8 years out from the procedure and neither the endodontist who did the root canal nor the 3 general dentists I saw between 2018-25 said I needed one. Though she said it's common practice to place a crown after a root canal to avoid the tooth from breaking, I'm reluctant to undergo a procedure on a tooth that has caused zero issues for 8 years. At first I thought she found something other dentists missed but later realized that 4 other dentists (endodontist followed by 3 general dentists) would have said something sooner if I really needed a crown. Other than the root canal, there was no abnormal findings clinically or on the x-ray that convinced me to follow Dr. Phillips' recommendation that I get a crown. Now, if I had a cavity, I would get that filled right away to avoid further decay. But when none of my previous dentists over the past 8 years told me I need a crown and I'm not having pain in that tooth, why create work when none is needed? She also recommended fixing a small chip on one of my front teeth and Invisalign from my bottom teeth, though both were cosmetic so I declined. By comparison, my previous dentist of 5 years NEVER recommended any of the above work. To her credit, Dr. Phillips wasn't pushy about getting the work done. When I asked if it's likely I'd lose the tooth over the next few months if I don't get a crown, she couldn't say. I know it's not always possible to predict medical/dental outcomes but her not knowing told me that I didn't have to make a decision right away and I'd likely be fine without the crown. If the recommendation for a crown was made because I had pain and/or a fracture/other abnormal pathology was found, I'd be more on board getting it, especially if I had been going to the practice for years and didn't need dental work beyond cleanings until now. But as a first time patient to the practice, having a procedure recommended for a tooth that hasn't caused pain or other issues for 8 years makes me question whether I truly need the crown or it's financially motivated. I moved back to my home state in late March so I cancelled the cleaning previously scheduled for April. If I were to see them again (as I want to move back to MN in a few years) and they recommended any dental work beyond bi-annual cleanings, I'd get a second opinion before agreeing to anything. However, I'd more likely find another dental practice that is more conservative in their recommendations, similar to the dentist I previously saw prior to moving to MN. read more

I just moved into the area and was going to look for a new dentist when a piece of my tooth fell out. I goggled local dentists who accepted the MN state plan and chose Tonka Smiles mostly because of its location. I was absolutely thrilled with the results. Not only were they able to squeeze me in within a day, they could not have been more professional, efficient, and friendly. Generally love Tonka smiles! The hygienists and dentists are great - they really provide good feedback on flossing/brunch if techniques, along w tips and trick to make it more of a habit, in a way that doesn't feel condescending or overwhelming. I've enjoyed all my cleanings here and couldn't imagine going anywhere else! I docked a point off because *sometimes* whenever I call the receptionists can have a slight attitude. I had wanted to change the time and had accidentally said my appointment was 30 means earlier than it was and received a lot of attitude and "Ugh's". This was disappointing as it makes me not want to call in. It's not all the time though so that's ok but it has been shocking when it does happen! read more

As a new patient there I can't tell you how thrilled I am to have found this office! ALL of the staff are so friendly and everything goes so smooth from the moment you walk in the door. They are transparent about their pricing and what to expect as well. This truly has been the best dentist experience I've ever had and I would highly recommend people to come here. Ya know, I've been through a lot with this dentistry. Cavities, root canal, cleanings, sickness in the middle of first attempt of the root canal. What they are: kind. I'm not even saying that because I love going to the dentist, because I certainly don't look forward to the dentist. I leave this place feeling taken care of and caught up with. The dentists and all the staff do a great job writing down and remembering details about me that they know how to pick right back up after. Lining up cleanings 6 months apart while in college is hard but when I come back, even after almost a year and a half like I did today, I went in and they made it easy for me. My teeth are clean and healthy, I left with a new toothbrush, flossers and toothpaste- so I'm set til next time. I normally see Dr.Phillips but when she's gone I also love to see Johnson. I have moderate dental anxiety so I was very sad when I realized I needed a crown. Somehow I cracked a tooth and when I chewed in that area it hurt. This had happened to me once before so I knew what lay ahead. I decided to take advantage of the sedation dentistry offered by Dr. Phillips. I am so glad I did! It really helped reduce my anxiety especially with the novocaine injection in my mouth. LeeAnn and Dr. Phillips work so well together, the procedure went smoothly and I just learned that I napped for an hour and a half after the procedure. Tonka Smiles is every bit of a 5 star rating and then some. Dr. Sarles is not only a great dentist but he is so, so good with all of his patients. He treats people with respect and will not make you feel like you're any less of a person for not flossing 50 times a day like some dentists' do. Great bedside manner... What a great clinic! For a variety of reasons I hadn't gone to the dentist for a few years and didn't want to be scolded by the Dentist. I wasn't scolded and they treated me with respect. They showed me the pictures of all of the work that needed to be done and are providing an explanation of costs before the work is done. They do sedation dentistry here as well, so I have that option going forward. read more
