I had heard this is a "tourist trap" with long lines and mediocre food. But with 108 thousands reviews on Google, how could I not be intrigued? We arrived around 12:30pm on a Friday in July. We were seated right away! Again my hopes were not too high and again I was pleasantly surprised! There are four pastas that you MUST try when in Rome as they say. Amatriciana, carbonara, cacio e pepe, and grica. I decided to try the amatriciana here and oh my! It's going to be my go to from now on! The sauce mixture of tomatoes and cheese was heaven! The presentation of being served in a pan was a nice touch. I would definitely avoid the pizza though. Not worth the tummy space. But do be sure to save some room for the tiramisu! It had a different flavor from most that was intriguing. Don't listen to the haters saying it's overhyped. If you have the opportunity I would say go for it and judge for yourself!
Found this place off social media as recommended to try their Cacio e Pepe. I'm not a huge fan of Italian food but.. when in Rome...you get the Cacio e Pepe. I got a side of meatballs to add some protein to my meal and focaccia because who can skip bread! Limoncello spritz was delicious. I could have had 10 more. The pasta itself was great, very cheesy and salty. With a hint of pepper. I will say adding the meatballs was a pro move. I wish they had that as a menu option so you don't have to pay an ungodly price at the end! Great experience to dine outdoors, but they also have air conditioned seats indoors. 10/10!
This restaurant was my favorite carbonara dish! Everything was delicious & freshly made & to top it off they had Moscato which I had a hard time finding in Rome. My family took me here for my birthday & I was very pleased with the food & service. The bathroom is located upstairs where they have another area to dine as well as an outdoor area. The bathroom is unisex with 2 stalls for woman & 1 for men. This place was busy but the staff didnt lack in service. We waited about 15mins to be served. The decor is cute. When back in Rome, this will be my #1 stop.
Can't get no more Italiano, then Tonnarello. As you approach the young maître ď he will ask how many in your Party you either line up with the 3 or more group or the party of 2 line. On the 3 or more line it moved quickly then next question do you want to eat outside or inside. Outside your wait will be longer and though there were many tables people tend to want to soak up the energy that comes from eating outside. The food was excellent my coda alla vaccinara was fantastic 3 large oxtails stewed in a tomato sauce served with purée mashed potatoes and salad. My wife and daughter decided to go with the Carbonara and my grandson chose the Tonnarello alľ amatriciana. I also tried the Fanta soda definitely not the Fanta you get in the US. I highly suggest checking this bustling area and restaurant out.
Best carbonara I had in Italy, 9/10. Granted I didn't have many. Pizza was okay, 6/10. Sauce didn't have any flavor, crust was a bit thicker than I would have liked. Service was quick. It was a bit crampy inside but that's just how most restaurants in Italy are, especially the popular ones
Hubs wanted to try this cuz it was one of the oldest restaurants around and had 100k reviews on Google! Wow! Food good and hubs enjoyed his pizza with egg as a topping. The salad though was excellent! Fried artichoke is a must! Tried an Aperol Spritz cuz everyone was drinking them! Lol. It looks pretty but was just ok for me. Instead of Limoncello to end our meal with they gave us something called Neroni which they said was more herbal based and aided digestion. One of the bigger restaurants we had been too. Arnold our server that took over for our initial one was excellent! So positive, cheerful and on the ball. I've learned that restrooms are a premium lol. We sat inside and it was nice and cool. Loved that they decorated with some vintage pieces.
We enjoyed dinner at Tonnarello near the Pantheon. My son Cole order the Cacio de pepe meatballs with focaccia and I ordered the pasta carbonara. My sister Paola ordered the Oxtail and my niece the meatballs in spaghetti sauce. We shared the dishes and had mixed reviews. Cole didn't like the meatball he picked. They came out all white with out any sauce served with spinach and potatoes. The pasta carbonara was too rich a without any sauce. I am probably not the best judge of what makes a good carbonara as I have gotten used to how I make it at home. The Oxtail was excellent. Probably one of the best dishes we had on our vacation. My niece enjoyed the meatballs in red sauce and wouldn't share. ;). Focaccia was very thin. Not what I'm used too. Good flavor though. The service was slow and the server was not attentive. I requested to start with tiramisu and she didnt bring it out until after. At that point we were full and declined. Getting a drink refill was slow and she kept getting it wrong by being us dishes and drinks meant for other tables.
November 10th, 2024, Sunday @ 12:33PM- There was a line to get in but it moved quickly. This is definitely a tourist trap with huge social media presence. Service was okay. We ordered crispy Roman artichoke appetizer, good flavor but it was cold. We shared 2 pastas - carbonara and amatriciana.... The carbonara is definitely pecorino dominate as it was gamey/barnyardy with the sheep-y taste than then 50/50 pecorino/parmesan I'm used to... understanding that pecorino is the most traditional choice, it was too gamey for me. The amatriciana was tasty but nothing to call home for. Just as I thought this was a complete flop we decided to order a couple tiramisus to finish the meal. They really redeemed themselves, the tiramisu was divine and oh so delicious. I still think about those tiramisus. Without the dessert this would have been a 2-3 stars place but I'd come back to give them another try with different dishes next time I'm in town. Seriously would just come back for the tiramisus.... It was that good.
Great service, fast seating. We sat inside but I think there's usually a wait to eat outside. The food was fast and decent I would rate it about a 6, 6.5 it's a little salty for my liking but it's all perspective.
Service was great. My lasagna had 2 bits of foil in it and tasted a little off.Good atmosphere.
Have to agree with the other reviews. It's a Tourist trap. They were flipping tables quicker than the servers they were giving us. They're clearly was catering to us like Americans. The food was OK. It didn't feel like it was made with love. The Caprese salad was extremely disappointing. Overall not bad food but not what I was expecting for authentic Italian
There are better places! Overhyped and lacking flavour. None of the dishes we ordered were good, sauce either lacked flavour or the dish was overly salty. I was rather disappointed since it was such a hyped restaurant! Service was decent but the whole restaurant was cramped and everyone always rushing you to finish. It was not the typical Italian 4 course dinner I was use to. It felt more American and our bill was given to us without asking for it. We felt like we were being kicked out and we hadn't finish our dessert yet. Most restaurants in Italy would also offer a grappa/liemcello or digestive at the end on the house, they just offer us a lollipop.
My group and I wanted to check out another place for aperitivo and since we walked a lot today, we wanted somewhere close by. We walked by this restaurant with a board stating €10 for 2 Aperol Spritz and some light bites - sounds fun! That was exactly what we got + a wine for my boyfriend. The drinks were much smaller than the other places we've been to which makes sense as it was only €5. But it was strong! My mom and I were immediately flushed, and she felt kind of tipsy. Maybe it was the lack of carbs we got but it was definitely much stronger than the previous restaurants we've been to. I also made a joke to our waitress that it was strong, and she definitely judged me quite hard for it LOL. We received a small board of the light bites that included French fries, flatbreads, and bruschetta. Everything was ok except the bruschetta, omg. That was AMAZING. The flavors of the bruschetta were probably one of the best I've ever had. It was a bummer that we only had two to share amongst the three of us but so so so good. I was thinking of ordering another drink but both me and my mom could barely finish one (lol, we're lightweights). We also ordered their Meatballs in Oxtail Sauce and Focaccia as our waitress recommended it with the sauce. The meatballs were delicious! It fell apart easily and wasn't gummy like some of the ones in America. There was some oxtail meat inside the meatball as well. The focaccia with the sauce was sooo good. It was a great recommendation even though there wasn't much sauce from the meatballs. We also really liked the chicory greens. Overall, an okay restaurant in my opinion. It is a little on the pricier side since I feel like it's more catered to tourists after a day at the Vatican City. We didn't get to try anything else besides the two things which probably annoyed our waitress but the pizzas and pastas looked good per Google! P.S. there is a mandatory 5% service charge included in the bill. Not a bad amount considering we did not need to pay for the water.
We came here for dinner after reading such positive reviews on Yelp. As we have learned, many places require a reservation for dinner, but this location was very accommodating to walk ins. There was a separate waiting area just for people on standby, but the dining space (upstairs and downstairs) moved so quickly that we were seated within 10 minutes. The highlight for us was the pana cotta - super creamy and light! We also got the cacio e Pepe that unfortunately was a bit too salty for my liking. We also ordered a bottle of wine to share. Overall, the food was solid, don't get me wrong but nothing that was super exceptional or mind blowing. However with the service, reasonable price, and the ability to walk in, solid portions, I would recommend this place if you are in the area for dinner and don't have a reservation elsewhere, but willing to wait for a bit. read more

A taxi driver recommended this restaurant and we tried to get reservations to no avail. When walking in what thought was a quaint little village area we did get here. They had inside tables available but had a waitlist line for outside, that was supposed to be 10 minutes. I'm glad we waited for outside but the wait was closer to 1/2 hour, at 11:30 AM or so. The line got mUCH longer and of course the inside filled as well. The food and service were great. As busy as they were the waiter did not rush us, although you could tell there were some just for the social media photo. We had the meatballs for an appetizer and each had very nice pasta dishes. Prices were more than reasonable. Highly recommend as long as you don't have to wait too long! 2 pastas, meatballs, 2 wines = 44.50 read more

Went there around 3pm in the afternoon there was a long line of people. Good thing we are only 2 so we didn't have to wait that long. It was worth the wait the food was amazingly delicious all of it!!! read more

You know a place I good when they have a waiting like at 3p Started with the Fococcia bread to start. It was thinner and crispier than the states and amazing. Great texture and flavor Then the tonnarello (pasta) cacio Pepe. Cheese and pepper. Amazing. So good The service was just ok which cost a star. Not terrible but could have been a little more attentive. But that could have been for a lot of reasons. And wouldn't stop me from returning again read more

This place was recommended to us on tiktok as the must tries in Rome, Italy. Making a reservation was easy, we made it the day before or you can just come before 6 pm and there is no wait. Around 8-9 pm there's a long line. Seating is very tight and close to one another. My husband and I sat at a table for you, less than a foot away from the two table on either side of us and we were on a tilt. Our table was wobbly. Once the food came out, you can look past all of this, trust me. The servers were all so kind and energetic. Here's what my husband and I ordered: A bottle of white wine (they bring a bucket of ice and place it next to your table), a bottle of still water, caprese salad (buffalo mozzarella), carbonara pasta, and red sauce with meatball pasta. Caprese salad: 5/5 They bring a bottle of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic to your table as well as salt and pepper. This salad made me and my husband obsessed with caprese salad. I love that they had lettuce at the bottom as well too. Carbonara: 5/5 A MUST have and always a hit at any pasta restaurant in Rome. So creamy and flavorful, prefect amount of salt and pepper. I love the pieces of bacon included, great balance of fat. I could eat this all day, every single day! Red sauce with meatball: 4/5 I will start with I am not a big fan of red sauce. I thought there was nothing special about the red sauce. The meatballs.... AMAZING. It was flavorful, moist, and delicious with the pasta and sauce. It all goes well together. Everything was PERFECT! You will eat exceptionally well for an incredibly reasonable price. We had the coto e buffala app, carbonara (very generous portion and mine was GF), aperol spritz it's mix well), chocolate salami and espressos at the end. Tucked away in a walkable part of the tratesvere area in Rome, this quaint restaurant with marvelous outdoor seating serves splendid Roman fares that you simply cannot miss when in Rome. Can't recommend this place enough!!! read more

If you are staying in Rome/Trastevere, this restaurant is a must! The food and atomosphere is incredible. The line starts to pick up around 5:30pm but there are lots of seats so the queue doesn't take long. I had the carbonara and it was to die for. Not to mention everything on the menu is pretty inexpensive for what you get. read more

Mob scene! Go before 5:30 if you want a quick seating. Two outside seating areas and pretty indoor too. In the labyrinth of Trastevere - a line an hour long! We had fun and good food too. read more

We passed up our later dinner reservation at another restaurant in Trastevere, and were able to walk right into Tonnarello to enjoy a nice dinner. I couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed that it was a very touristy restaurant (perhaps the volume of English speaking Americans), but nonetheless all enjoyed tasty dishes! We started with a bottle of house white wine, artichokes and yummy bread (an extra cost here). I enjoyed a salad with smoked salmon, and other members of our family had chicken with peppers and two orders of carbonara! The carbonara came in a cute metal pan and was a very generous portion, that neither could finish. We sat inside (seemed like outside was more popular) in an attempt to get some AC during the Italian heat wave, but it was still quite hot inside which can make dinner a bit harder to enjoy. This amazing restaurant has inside and outside dining with friendly service. The food was the best we had in Italy and I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Rome. The portions are large and everything was reasonably priced. I still dream about this meal. read more

We had an excellent experience here. We ordered the Caprese, Mussels, Artichoke, Pinsa, Cacio Pepe, Pinsa Capricciosa & finished off with Tiramisu. I did not get pictures of everything because we were enjoying it so much! 10 stars if I could. As we wrapped up, we saw a looong line of people waiting to be seated. With good reason. read more

We set out looking for Gratzie and Grazilla. After searching and asking we came to the realization that it is no longer in business. The entire square was now owned by Tonnarello There was a huge line up (two actually). One for people with one or two in their party and one for parties of three or more. If you don't want to wait don't come right when they open. We waited a bit longer to get an inside table because you run the risk of everyone around you smoking while you eat if you eat outside. We ordered the croquettes four ways which were delicious We ordered the pesto rigatoni and the carbonara pasta. It was too much for us but delicious. I enjoyed the pesto one in particular. The food was excellent, my favorite was the mussels bucket and fried calamari. It was a long wait but worth it. Don't expect the service to be good. They're efficient but not necessarily polite. It was packed to the gills so it was loud but lively. A good choice for kids, if they have the patience to wait for seating. They don't take reservations so you have to wait in line. read more

Tonnarello is an absolute institution in Trastevere. It seems like they've absorbed 3 or 4 different restaurants at the street intersection that now run under the same operation. As a result, they have a TON of seating. When I got there, there was a line of 20 people waiting at the corner, but the wait was less than 10min. These guys move extremely fast. Once seated, you are presented with a bountiful menu of options. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the pasta options. We ordered the lasagna and the pasta Amatriciana, both of which were incredible! We also ordered the saltimbocca since we knew it was a popular Roman dish. I'd definitely skip the saltimbocca next time. The pizza and pasta here is the way to go!! read more

Good food, and also got it delivery which made it convenient and avoided the wait that this place is sure to have (no reservations). The lasagna was so so good. The noodles were so soft I almost couldn't tell it apart from the cheese. The sauce is also great. Partner got the amatriciana and still loved it. Got the fettuccine which was a different noodle than usual. The appetizer of buffalo and parm was meh. The mozzarella tasted so firm and not soft. The parm was nice but so salty without the cheese to complement. read more
We arrived here at about 13:00 and were asked to wait behind a line near the entrance. Although the line was kinda long, it went by super fast. The food here was so good. We got the focaccia, cacio e pepe, and pesto. The servings filled us up and the flavor was phenomenal. The atmosphere of the restaurant was perfect. read more

It was very busy. We stayed in line for good 30 minutes, but the line goes fast. Food was amazing. We ordered pasta with mussels and meatball in oxtail sauce. Both were good but meatball was amazing. One of the best meatballs that I've had experienced before. Environment was really good as well. read more

This location has shorter queue and I was so happy to try out Tonnarello when visiting Rome. The menu is the same to the original location. The food was amazing. I would like to come back to try other options. Our server was really nice. Service was amazing. This is also my first time trying out Italian style oxtails, which was more than my expectation. Best pasta & meatballs in Rome IMO! We went at an earlier dinner time to avoid the rush and for right in. The meatballs in oxtail sauce were excellent and large enough to split or have as a meal. The pasta has delicious mussels and spices and was cooked perfectly al dente. I think the quality and portions of the food matched the price & the service was fast and pleasant! read more

If you are in Rome for even one day put this place on your list RUGHT NOW. My wife and I have been twice already during our 6 day stay and I could not say enough good things about this establishment. The food absolutely some of the best we have had anywhere in Italy and it is in a beautiful location in Trastavere. The service is not lacking either, each of our servers was fantastic! read more

We went here because the neighborhood in Travestere was lively and Tonnarello had great reviews. The food was really generic and seemed like some pasta I could have made at home with a jar of sauce. The waitstaff was friendly and the service was great. I wouldn't go back for the food - especially with the wait. My friends felt the same about their meals with the exception of the fried artichoke. read more
It appears as though this a chain and there are two of them in Trastevere. The place is awesome. What you see on instagram is real. The lines are long but only for outside. We were sat right away. Artichoke, Focaccia, Meatballs with potatoes and a vegetable and of course carbonara with one cocktail and still waters. 61 Euros. Unbelievable. A must.. read more

This pasta place was one of my favorites! There are tons of places to try in Trastevere and this is worth a stop. The pasta with mussels and pecorino was delicious! The noodles were al dente and mussels went very well with the cheese. I also got a cappuccino which was excellent! Tutto bene! read more
