This was our first meal after reaching Rome, Italy. After settling into our nearby hotel, we wandered around and chose this restaurant located behind the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica. It was after 9pm when we arrived, and the place was bustling. They offer sidewalk seating, but no tables were available. We sat inside, which was fine, because I could see all the entrees coming out of the kitchen. The Calamari Fritti was so good. Fresh calamari, lightly breaded and cooked to perfection. We also tried the Fettuccine Bolognese and a Funghi E Salsiccia(Mushroom and Italian Sausage) pizza. Everything tasted so fresh and savory. Hands down the best restaurant I've been to in Rome. It was so good that we actually went back a second time. I know this might sound unusual, but you have to try the fries .. seriously the most delicious fries I've ever had. Perfectly crispy on the outside with a flavorful sauce on the inside... just perfect. We returned just for those fries, but also tried other dishes, and honestly every single one was excellent. Looked up reviews for Casa Maria. Went there and had to try it out for ourselves. We ordered risotto, steak and the fries that a lot of people rave about. The risotto was ok, not creamy like we're used to back in the states. The steak was covered in a cream sauce with capers. Had very good flavor. I would order it again. The steak was a little tough, but still very good. The fries are cut in the shape of potato chips but thicker. Definitely order the fries if you go, they are so worth it. Thank heavens for this place. We have been in various cities in Umbria and Tuscany and shocked at how little flavor most of the meals had. Sure, they were fresh, but it seemed that everyone was afraid to use spices other than salt, pepper, and olive oil. We had an absolutely amazing meal while in Rome. The food was so good we came back a second night! One of the few places that we found near the Termani station and our hotel that wasn't just pizza and pasta. It doesn't appear to cater to the tourist and more to the locals. Ordered the tomato bruschetta (came with one big piece, pretty good) and the mixed charcuterie plate (8 euro, came with only 1 type of cheese- Parmesan. And 12 slices of mixed meat) as appetizers. For entrees, we got the veggie soup since I wasn't too hungry. It was pretty hearty and did the job. Also got the spaghetti with clams. Pasta was undercooked, still hard in the middle, and the noodles didn't have much taste. After a long day out touring Rome, this restaurant came up as a suggestion for a nice dinner. We entered at 5pm and we were out by 5:52pm. We were given plenty of time to order food which was nice since the menu was quite large with plenty of primi, pastas, pizzas and contorni. We opted for a some bruschetta's, pizza and pasta. The food came out very quickly and it was everything. The pasta was al dente how it should be and perfectly seasoned. The pizza was thin with a crisp but juicy and delicious. To finish we got the tiramisu which was kind of disappointing. It was all mascarpone and hardly half of savoiardi cookie soaked in coffee. My biggest complaint was the service. Maybe it's just me... but I did not appreciate having servers standing in a corner staring at us eat. It made me uncomfortable and made me want to eat fast and leave. We weren't even done eating and a waitress came over and asked if we were done since there were 5 penne left in the bowl. First of all I have to admit the food was great but it stops there. I have NEVER EVER SEEN STAFF SO RUDE. Living in Southern California I have encountered racism but it is always hidden but here it was very obvious, beside us there was another family that the looked like they are from Middle East those guys left without ordering, however we decided to stay because A. it was near our hotel B. We where so exhausted to go anywhere else the waiter practically through the dishes at our table and any conversation end up in a grunt from him as if we are beneath him to even talk to us at the end he sent someone else to collect the money and didn't bother to show his face.
