Tonnarello is a great place in Rome. Had about a 30 minute wait, place is busy and worth it, the line moves fast. The house wine is great here. We started off with focaccia bread(oil and rosemary) so tasty. The carciofo(fried artichoke) is something I'd wanted to try and it was amazing. We tried 2 of the 4 Rome pastas here, the carbonara and the amatriciana, both were fantastic. Finished the meal off with tiramisu, more pudding like, but delicious. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you looked at it), it was pouring rain one of our evenings in Rome. This was our prime opportunity to trek our way to Trastevere for a hopeful dinner. Packed, few tourists, long wait that was pretty disorganized. Don't walk away because there's no wait list and if you're not seen, you will be forgotten. Once seated, things start looking up. Service is leisurely so you'll be here for a few hours. Wine list is amazing including wines by the glass. Charcuterie was the best we've had so far in Rome, served with three cheeses, and followed by salads. The only drawback once we got seated in a great table is the smoking. Nearly every table outdoors had smokers - people smoke before they eat, between courses, after dinner. I know it's Rome, but we came home reeking of cigarettes! (4.5 stars) You might have to wait a while outside for a table but it's worth it. This might have been my favorite meal in Rome, mainly because the staples like cacio e pepe and carbonara pasta were all so tasty and were maybe the best variations I had yet. But also, the other dishes like lasagna and pasta al pesto were also so good. All of the dishes were actually pretty light, which I found to be rare in Rome. The only thing I will say is that there are so, so many tables which means lots and lots of dishes being served. So make sure your dish hasn't been sitting long or make a small change to your dish so that's super fresh. The best dish at our table was by far the one that had to be made specially. read more

If I could give tonnarello 6 stars, I would. I was in Rome for 4.5 months and this was by far my favorite restaurant. I came here multiple times during my stay, including the last night before I left. The service was amazing, the food was delicious, and it was affordable. My go to dish here was the cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper). Simple, yet tasty roman classic. The carbonara is another highly rated dish. All the ingredients tasted super fresh. They also had my favorite tiramisu, which was perfectly creamy and not overwhelmingly sweet. There is usually a wait, but very worth it. Amazing, delicious food located in the Trastevere area! During our stay and walks by, we would see the large groups of people waiting outside to be seated so naturally, it caught our eye to eat here. Last night we had one of the best dinners of our lives at Tonnarello! We came and although there was some larger groups waiting, we were seated quickly for a party of 3. I ordered the Tonnarello Nadia pasta (eggplant, olives, capers, and tomatoes) and it was amazing! Rich in flavor and perfect in every way possible when paired with a red Chianti! My husband ordered the Capricciosa (pomodoro, mozzarella, egg, prosciutto, olives, artichokes, and mushrooms) and that was one of the best pizzas I've ever had! Perfectly crispy, not too doughy, and overladen with sauce like they can be made in the States, just perfect in every way, Dessert was amazing too: pineapple carpaccio with orange honey and chocolate salami (not real salami but a cookie the server couldn't explain to me why it was called salami lol) Overall an incredible meal that sealed off my love deeper for Rome and it's gracious people and amazing culture and food!! read more

The ambiance and restaurant set-up is definitely more catered to the fast moving tourist trying to get some sit-down food quickly. There is often a wait at night, but the line moves quickly. This is not the sort of restaurant where you can grab any open table and sit down, they have a system in place. Our waiter had a terrible attitude towards us, noone came to take our order for over 30 minutes, no drinks, nothing, when we called the waiter over we were told he would be right over. Trastevere - one of the most popular neighborhoods in Rome is now full of tourists. I am also one of them because Tonnarello is one the top reviewed places in all of the city. The restaurant itself usually has a line forming after 6pm. There are tons of people walking around exploring the cute alley way restaurants. Luckily, the wait wasn't too long and I got seated within 15 minutes. Their claim to fame is the pasta. Yes, Roman pasta is al dente - but not because of the chew due to "rawness or undercooking" (apologize for my description), but simply the pasta itself is very dense and the smaller portion is quite filling. I will say the portion of Tonnarello is good size and value served in a metal pan. Most of the options were simply a red or green sauce with cheese, but I wanted something more substantial and opted with the meatball options. Great food, wonderful service, but to me, there were several places that offered really good pasta without the big, loud crowds. Definitely very tasty, but not sure about the hype. Nothing to knock on the place, but I prefer a place that isn't so touristy/rambunctious and I had similar fresh "al dente" pasta experiences in Rome. Happy travels and explorations! read more

I enjoyed amatriciana but we had better carbonara elsewhere, still good though. The tiramisu was runny, probably should've been kept in the freezer/refrigerator longer but still good! This is in the middle of my favorite Roma neighborhood, none other than the badest Trastevere. The name of this place translates to the noodles used in making spaghetti, which is their forte. Like the saying goes: When in Rome. The lines are long, for good reason, but once you're in there is no rush to kick you out. This is our favorite restaurant while dining in Rome. The food was simply THE BEST. Our server, Vidal, suggested two appetizers: the focaccia bread and the Parma ham & Melon. Everyone, including the kids (which can be the pickiest eaters) enjoyed the interesting combo. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer and you you could just the freshness of the squid! We shared a lasagna Bolognese and a pizza boscaiola. They were both amazing. The quality of the cheese! YES it's worth the hype!!!! Stayed in the trestavare district while on my honeymoon in Italy and this was probably the best pasta I had. Super authentic and the wait staff is so friendly. The hubs and I ended up here multiple mornings before venturing off to see the sites drinking cappuccinos at the bar. I can't say enough good things about the staff because they were always helpful and kind to us. When I asked them what they were famous for to warrant such a long line they said they had good pasta! Haha! The food really is very tasty and authentic which is nice. I got the spaghetti and meatballs (even though it comes with ONE meatball) and the hubs got the americano pasta. My only regret is a didn't find Tonnarello until a month before I left! So of course I had to bring my family back just for the cacio e Pepe. Tonnarello is always packed. always. and let me tell you it is worth the wait! The pasta is so good! The only thing I will say about this time, my pasta was super salty. I think they put too much Parmesan cheese on it and I was so sad since this was my favorite place! I will still give them a 5/5 because other than that I have no complaints. All were great, except the carbonara was very salty and got a little hard to eat the whole serving. Crazy busy and immensely popular with tourists, my wife and I decided to stop by nonetheless per her colleague's strong recommendation for our last dinner on our trip. Luckily we were seated right away during early dinner hours, so definitely come sooner than later to minimize your wait. We went with the classic Tonnarello Cacio e Pepe and Tonnarello Carbonara - both served straight in the pan. We thoroughly enjoyed the flavors and richness, but we agreed that the balance in the egg, cheese, and so forth was a notch below Ristorante "Al 34" (our favorite on our trip). In contrast, the Coda alla Vaccinara (oxtail in tomato sauce) and Bufalina pizza were disappointments. The oxtail's flavors were one-note and completely bored my palate within a couple bites. The latter's crust was surprisingly thick and the cheese too heavy-handed. After cooling even a little bit, it tasted like overly dense cheese bread with no other components to elevate the flavors. Service was quick and efficient and we certainly enjoyed the pastas. Worth a try if you can make it in without too much of a wait. read more

This is one of my husband and I's favorite places to eat in Rome. During artichoke season, it is our favorite spot for fried artichoke, something you must try in Rome if you come during the season! All the pasta here is fresh and home made. The cacio e pepe is one of the best I have eaten. They have delicious Roman style pizza, shaped in an oval. The Diavola has large slices of spicy salami and is amazing! I always love to try the mussels everywhere I go and the mussels here come with amazing toast and sauce that will make your bread melt in your mouth. The service is always fast and friendly. The restaurant was recommended by my host when I did a 24 hour layover in Rome. It's located in a cute small street Int the Trestavare are, in a plaza next to a church. They have seating area outdoor and indoor. If you seat outside it's a great spot for people watching. The day I went ended up being a wonderful sunny day, and perfect timing before the rush of people. I ordered the carbonara and a glass of wine, the carbonara was served in personal size pan.
