Three years, that's how long I've been driving past the giant billboards for Lane Southern Orchards…read moreon I-75 telling myself "one day we should stop there." Well, this past Saturday my husband and I finally did. The entire property felt like a scene straight out of a Southern postcard. Families were out picking strawberries in the patch, people were relaxing in rocking chairs on the porch with ice cream cones, the café was buzzing, and the roadside market was full of shoppers loading up on goodies. The place was busy but somehow still relaxing. We started in the roadside market where I immediately grabbed one of the little carts because self-control clearly wasn't part of the plan. I stocked up on fresh produce, preserves, ciders, wines, and somehow convinced myself I "needed" adorable wooden earrings from a local artisan. We sampled a few local wines and naturally left with several bottles. The market also has gifts, souvenirs, and and entire section dedicated to dogs/ furry pets. After shopping we headed next door to the café for dessert. They offer cobblers, cakes, pies, homemade ice cream, and enough sweet treats to make you abandon every diet plan you've ever created. My husband is a peach cobbler enthusiast, so ordering their famous peach cobbler was mandatory. According to him, it absolutely lived up to the hype. I went with the peach pound cake and it was moist, buttery, and delicious. Their breakfast and lunch menu also looked really good. If I were road-tripping through the area, this would absolutely be a stop for a meal. It's also definitely going on my list of places to take guests when they come visit Middle Georgia. What really tied everything together was the staff. Everyone we encountered was warm, welcoming, and full of genuine Southern hospitality. Needless to say, we won't wait another three years before stopping again.

However, we stopped by there on 11 May 2025, about 4:30 pm, the restaurant was dirty, the restroom seemed to be coming apart, and the food not only looked bad, it tasted worse. I sampled the items on my plate, it was disgusting, the Peas were too salty and very little flavoring other than salt, the Cabbage, not only was it way over cooked, the taste, was even worst, the only item I ate was the Baked Chicken, even it had been sitting in the pan too long and overcooked. I am a big tea drinker, have been drinking it since my Mom use to give it to us as kids. This tea, barely had any flavor or strength to it and was soooo sweet, it would have put most people into a diabetic shock. I guess the only bright spot was maybe the service, that is, it took a minute, but, we got our meals in a timely manner. This was without any doubt, the absolute worst meal I have ever eaten at Fried Green Tomatoes, whether at the Macon Restaurant (who was the worst) or this Fried green Tomato here in Fort Valley Georgia. Maybe it was just left over, heated up from the Friday meal, regardless, they want be seeing any more of my business for a good while.

The kids loved shopping for new shirts, snacks, and seeing what fishing equipment they needed for a trip that didn't involve fishing. While I understand businesses may ask questions about service animals, the way this was handled was incredibly unprofessional. Krysta loudly questioned me in front of other customers and began reading questions from a paper about what tasks my dog performs. When I tried to explain that I have POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), she was dismissive and laughed, which was humiliating and embarrassing. Not all disabilities are visible. I felt singled out, judged, and treated with a lack of respect simply because I do not "look disabled." My dog was clearly identified as a service animal, and I even offered proof when questioned. What upset me most was not being asked a question, but the rude and public manner in which I was treated. No customer should be made to feel embarrassed because of a disability. Unfortunately, after this experience, I do not plan on returning.
