Where does one began when you visit a legend, that has retained what made it great . Well, Im from Florida. So on our way back from visiting friends at Lake Lanier, I as the passenger + navigator said..hmmm...we need a break but let's find soul food. I said. Who goes thru Macon and dont eat good. Not me. So, I hit Yelp. Then I asked AI. Claude. Claude gave me a list and there was the H! So we drove 20 minutes out the way. Best detour ever! Go early. Buy an extra meal for home. I gladly dropped my cash. ..salmon cakes made me cry....everything was off the chain. Well, I had my good juju on, I sat on a bench with a 30 year veteran of this place. She talked my ear off, what a delight. So the place is decked out in Allman brothers memorbilia. It was their early haunt as they rose to fame. Well the founder, older blk lady is dead. Her family smartly sold out to corporate. But it was worth it. They maintained all thats good. Even the tiny old bathrooms. Need an update for sure. But. .Definitely worth the visit. Parking was horrible! So go early! Now, you need to go by Macon cemetery. See Allman burial, civil war places. I want to explore Macon more now! Well, as we drove home, around Jacksonville, I reached in the back seat. No fork. Just a smile. Yes i fed my driver. Salmon cakes hit on all cylinders. We visited again!!! And it's still just as memorable as the first time. We arrived on Sunday around noon and had 9 people. Our wait was minimal and once seated the magic happened! Our server was attentive and prompt! The food was oh so good! Loooooved the "white" gravy with biscuits. Made me feel like I was sitting at my Maw Maws table. So damn good! Truly ashamed to say we've lived in Macon 3 years and this was our first time eating at H & H. My pregnancy cravings put me on the hunt for biscuits and gravy and I am soooo glad that hunt lead me here. WOW. This is GOOD food & great people! A nice corner restaurant with a at home feel, truly a gem. Thankfully the day we went wasn't busy so we took our time going over the menu and asking for recommendations. Having an uncle Red Dog myself, my husband knew immediately what meal he will be ordering. I on the other hand was torn after I saw they had salmon patties. If you are from the south this food is just ok compared to true southern food. My food arrived barely warm as if it had been sitting out. The staff seems really nice except for the waitress we had, she acted as if she was annoyed by us being there (it was her birthday and she was running around the whole time we were there telling everyone), never bothered to refill our drinks, not friendly at all, but the other staff I noticed were very friendly. The restaurant is cool. The decor is nice. My husband said the last time he ate here it was wonderful I wasn't there to compare to this visit. The waitress killed the vibes. read more

So I've been wanting to try this place for awhile and finally got here. This is a tricky place to judge if you grew up in the south eating this type of food your whole life. The food is not bad by any stretch, but for me everything was just average and none of it compares to my mom's cooking. I would recommend giving it a try based on all the great reviews. So this is a down home diner. We arrived @10am on a Sunday and there were no open tables. The place was packed with a broad mix of folks. Turnover was fast though. Waitress arrived quickly as did the coffee. We were lucky on timing bc when we left there were people qued up outside. Good strong coffee. Offer coffee to go if you want it. Worth the Early Wake-Up Call If you're in Macon, H and H is a must-visit for breakfast. I ordered the H and H Standard Breakfast and was impressed with the execution - eggs cooked exactly right and the bacon was perfectly crispy. Helping my son relocate for his new job at mercer university brought us to this local favorite. What a jaw dropping experience! I can honestly say this was the best meal I have ever eaten. The closest thing I could recall was Sunday dinner at my parents home. Now perhaps it's culture shock coming from rural New York to Macon Georgia but I tell you what, we were made to feel so welcomed from the second we sat down. I ordered a piece of fried chicken and the chicken fried steak, fried Okra and Mac and Cheese. Everything was superb. I do understand that things can go wrong and as I cut into my chicken I discovered it was quite raw about 1/3 of way in. I felt awkward pointing it out because I did not want to seem to be a pita. One waitress observed my situation and came over to see what was up and was horrified, she called the owner over and she was even more horrified. they scooped up all my plates apologizing profusely. I kept saying that its ok its ok everything else was phenomenal. Nope! The owner came over and asked me to reorder. I said huh? she had more drinks brought over replaced my entire order. Again this meal was the best food I have ever eaten x2. after our meal I was confused and got our waitresses attention and said " do we pay at the register or can you bring us the check?" she said" honey there's no charge! I was like nu uhhhhhhh. They insisted and hoped the mistake wouldn't affect our coming back! I was stupified. Are you kidding me? I'll be back tomorrow. My family and I tried this restaurant on our trip back to Florida. This is a good place for Soul Food cuisine. The menu consists of traditional Sunday dinner at "Big Momma's" house; down to the deviled eggs. Our food order came out fast and hot. The beef tips were very tender and favorable. The only regret is that you only get one piece of fried catfish, it's too good for just one piece. The restaurant walls are a history lesson of music greats such Johnny Taylor, Presley Sledge and famous past guest such as Oprah Winfrey. This restaurant seems to be community staple as there were many take out orders. We want to thank Mr. Terrance, Manager for his hospitality and sending us off with hot peach cobbler.
