I think they mix a lot of ingredients so much that you can't taste the actual burger. A bit too much. It tastes like a burger you would make at home. Still good, don't get me wrong. She ordered a Corned Beef Sandwich on rye bread served cold, with jalapeño jack cheese on the side and mustard. The corned beef was flavorful and tender, and the cold preparation worked perfectly. Simple but satisfying, although they put the cheese on the sandwich. The ¼ lb Beef Burger Deluxe came with fries, raw onion, lettuce, tomato, and pickles--upon request no mayo--on a regular, non-toasted bun, as requested. The burger was juicy and cooked well, and the fresh toppings added a nice crunch. The fries were golden and crisp. This was a great classic combo. For drinks, we tried three large 24oz milkshakes--banana, Oreo, and vanilla. Each was thick, creamy, and rich in flavor. The banana stood out for me! Let me start off saying that Top Notch has been around for 75 years! So exceptional excellence is what has kept you guys around for a long time. But the quality of the burgers are diminishing! Loved the vibes of the place as it harkens back to 40 years ago when the chains did not dominate. Service was spotty as they appeared to be too busy talking to come take our order, but that happens when the restaurant is not that busy. This is a longstanding burger spot. The food is greasy and delicious, with no frills. There are very few places that can make a great patty melt, and this is certainly one of them. The fries are crisp and perfect for dipping in the milkshakes - strawberry is my favorite. Portions are generous. Service is friendly, but can be a bit slow - when we went today, our drinks arrived after our entrees. There are absolutely no frills here - it retains many of the old charms from when it opened 75+ years ago, though could be due for a small facelift. I do not recommend this place. The service is fine. And the food is pretty good but WAY overpriced. We ordered two burgers with fries, a mozz sticks, two soft drinks and an add'l order of fries and we spent $60. Like I said the food was pretty good. But not $60 good. And I've always said... A burger joint like Top Notch is becoming rarer to find these days. It's an old school divey diner type restaurant with an old school hospitality type of service. Our waitress could of smiled a bit more but other than that no complaints. I usually crave a root beer float when I come in places like this, so I ordered one without hesitation. It came with a lot of ice cream, just wish it had more root beer or at least another refill. I ordered their 1/2 lb burger with American cheese with a side of fries. So basically their deluxe. It's served with the patty on the bottom bun with all the fixings on the side for you build yourself. So I assembled mine with light mayo of course and lettuce and tomatoes. The burger was phenomenal. It's definitely not your gourmet burger, and that's actually ok sometimes. The beef tasted fresh and perfectly cooked. The burger tasted homemade, something you'd make yourself in your backyard. And their fries were also tasty as well. I'll definitely be back whenever I'm craving a home style burger. read more

This used to be the go to spot in the 90's, these days not so much. We decided to give them a try to see if they held up over the years. It was a waste of my time and his money. He ordered a cup of chili which was salty. We both got the double cheeseburger deluxe meals. Mine with fries which used to be yummy now they're just plain ole fries. He got his with onion rings. Chopped onions on a burger, I much prefer them inside not on top. And I don't like that I had to build the burger, I feel had it come out already put together maybe the flavors of the condiments would've added to the outcome of the bland meat. I had never ever set foot in the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago along 95th Street, but since I had a client meeting in the area I wanted to grab a bite to eat prior to said meeting. This led me to a visit to Top Notch Beef Burgers on a random midweek mid-morning. This joint has classic diner stamped all over it, from the huge outdoor sign ("celebrating 75 years of Chicago's greatest burger") to a couple of cops sitting at a very standard-looking booth to the counter seating facing a wall of photos. Since I wandered in around 10 AM, I was greeted by the server with a breakfast menu. I sheepishly inquired if I could order a burger at such a typical breakfast time slot, and I was pleased when the server said no problem and handed me a lunch menu. I ordered the deluxe 1/4 pound beefburger which comes with a side of fries. Supposedly the beef is ground up at the restaurant, and the fries are hand cut too. The burger comes with tomato, grilled onion, tomato, pickle, and I opted for American cheese. Although this is not a huge or unwieldy burger, it was satisfying and just a tad messy (my bad). The fries were good though I needed a few squirts of ketchup on them. The big ol' glass of ice water was sufficient for me. The bathroom is old-school too (definitely no Dyson hand dryer), but seemed clean enough. Service was fine, as I was presented the check and then I settled with the cashier in front. I am glad that the old-fashioned burger and fries combo did the trick, as it sustained me during the subsequent two-hour client meeting. I'd say Top Notch was pretty good so stop on by if you're in Beverly. read more
