Located in the Santa Monica Mountains, Topanga Canyon is a curvy, winding road with plenty of things to do. Of course, hiking is a primary activity that you can do, but there are several cafes, lodges, and romantic restaurants located here. It's a great place to explore.

One of my favorite drives if you are in the area... All the canyon roads that lead you to the pacific highway are grand. Another favorite is the Malibu Canyon road.

Topanga Canyon is a hidden little gem in the Santa Monica Mountains. This place is accessible from Malibu or the valley via Topanga Canyon Road. The road itself is a fun drive, one of many in LA county. The road is two lanes wide, and is more fun to drive an night headed from the SFV to Pacific Coast Highway. During the day, traffic will take the magic out of the drive (as seen in the pics). Stay away on rainy days, as it can get hectic: landslides, slick roads, and people who forget how to drive as soon as it starts sprinkling. The town is not a place I actually frequent, but I just pass through it. It's a quiet, sleepy town with a few shops and residences. If you're looking for a nice drive and want an alternative to Mulholland, check this place out.

Definitely a MUST trail to visit. Went with a couple of friends. It's not a bad hike at all. The path we took was a piece of cake, but I'm guessing there are more difficult ones to choose from. There IS a little cave area that you can climb into at the very top. It may take some squeezing in and crawling on your knees but it's a nice experience. I definitely got some great pics on the day that i went.

I used to drive this canyon several times a week when I lived in the area. It's best done in a fine car that can take the hairpin turns without braking, but yesterday I was in the 'ole beater shooting pics out the window. I took the scenic route to get from Redondo to West Hills, like I always do.....cuz I hate freeways. PCH along the ocean was beautiful, then through the canyon into the Valley. Oh, the views.....especially upon descent after you pass Top of Topanga Overlook. http://www.yelp.com/biz/top-of-topanga-overlook-woodland-hills If not for a tailgater, I would have slowed down to snap a photo of the one word written on a rock wall that sums up the feeling of this place: sacred. And if you haven't been on Old Topanga Canyon Road, check it out. It connects with Topanga Canyon Blvd. midway through the canyon, in the village. Pick it up off Mulholland Hwy. near the high school in Calabasas. I also need to get a shot of that pink flying pig on a pole, must be a canyon landmark by now. That dude speaks for me, because I will be traveling on freeways.....when pigs fly. ; )

I love hiking so much. I was a student at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and thought it was quite hard to find good hiking places in the general vicinity but Topanga Canyon is literally a 10 minute drive away with so many different trails, both short and long. The trails were absolutely beautiful and at the top, you can find some amazingly beautiful views of the scenery and outlook of the valley. There were also so many caves to crawl through and get lost in, some that were at the edge of the mountain so if you're risky enough, you can climb into those and look down a huge cliff. The air is so fresh and there are just many different areas to explore and sights to see in Topanga Canyon. I highly recommend this hiking area for those living around this area.

Beautiful canyon along the Malibu coast. It's very serene. And it's host to the best restaurant in the world: Inn of the Seventh Ray.

There are very few staff type people to help you so make sure you have water and can walk, sometimes on rough trails. You can camp there over night, but there are no facilities at all. None. You pack in and pack out. Most people go there just to walk or hike. In the parking area there is a bathroom and a drinking fountain. There is also a nice set of picnic tables for lunch. If you walk far enough you can see the ocean and it is a lovely view. There are also wonderful wild flowers, little critters and great hills to see. It is part of the Santa Monica Mountains. There are about 36 miles of trails through open grassland. It is beautiful. Mountain bikes are allowed but only on fire trails and people will not be happy to see you. We have had fires, a lot, lately (I am writing in Sept of 2024), now none of been here, but there is really bad air right now and it is hot so keep that in mind. If you are healthy you will be fine. If not, maybe wait to take a long hike after fire season is over in late October. Outside the park is the little town of Topanga, you will pass it on your way. There are places to eat there and a few shops. It is very nice. It is a great place to go for a long hike or a short walk. Have a great time and pick up after yourself.

We tried to stop somewhere in LA that looks cool, but there was no parking and waaaaay too many people to leave our car packed with luggage. So I hopped on Yelp to find a new spot that looked away from the city, and this was perfect. It was quiet and beautiful, and its simplicity was very engaging for my kids 5-8years. My husband walked on the paths for a bit and I enjoyed a spot in the sunshine as the majority of the park was shady and a bit chilly! The park and trail is tucked into a neighborhood. The only thing confusing to me was the parking lot. There was two marked spots--one for handicapped and one next to it which said 'no parking' on the ground but there was no sign on the wall in front of the spot. It seemed odd and unnecessary. Why can't people park here in the only other marked spot? Is this parking lot only for people with handicaps? Where is anyone else supposed to park--the curb on the other side that's not marked and not deep enough to be out of the way of someone backing out of the handicapped spot? Other than that, and the dirty bathroom which had what looked like a poop smear on the floor and a pile of liners and crumpled TP blocking the bowl of the women's toilet, this was a great spot to be.

They have some benches along the outside of the play area for people to sit. Only two swings! I wish there were more and they ones they do have are directly in the sun. The other half of the park is kind of empty, with just a few picnic benches and a flat concrete area. It would be awesome if they had even more picnic benches or even added more play structures. The park itself is pretty small. It is never super crowded when I go because it's kind of tucked away, but if there are more than a dozen kids it feels a little chaotic. Always clean though! I stumbled onto a Brompton a few months ago that I love and, now, I added a custom Surly Ogre made by Chris, Nate and the team at Topanga Creek Outpost. I took it out on the ocean trails for its inaugural ride this morning and it's an incredible machine. I quickly realized that having a bike sized and designed for me made me a better rider this morning. I felt stronger and more confident. Maybe this doesn't make sense but it felt like the bicycle and I were one; something I didn't expect. To call Topanga Creek Outpost a bike shop is inadequate.
