I stumbled onto a Brompton a few months ago that I love and, now, I added a custom Surly Ogre made by Chris, Nate and the team at Topanga Creek Outpost. I took it out on the ocean trails for its inaugural ride this morning and it's an incredible machine. I quickly realized that having a bike sized and designed for me made me a better rider this morning. I felt stronger and more confident. They don't rent bikes now but, at the time, they did (just called them up and found out they don't rent bikes now). Spoke with Chris today. Topanga Creek Bicycles used to be Hollywood Pro Bicycles on Hollywood Blvd., and back in the day (about 4 years ago), they custom built my baby (a Surly Crosscheck.) At that time, there wasn't a decent bike shop to be found where I live (Downtown LA), so I'd hop the Red Line to get service or parts from them. Topanga's too much of a hike, so I haven't visited the new store. But I can attest that Chris and his staff were always amazing friendly and helpful. And every part they sold me is still in working order, with the exception of a front wheel (stolen) and an Arkel pannier (their renowned cam-lock system broke on me, although, to be fair, I often carried a lot of weight in my pannier.) They encouraged me to try the Brooks saddle, which I love - it's gorgeous and it just gets better with age. (I have the Brooks handlebar tape, too.) read more

This place absolutely sucks. Do not get your bike rentals here. The owner does not care about you and will let you die on the trail that he sends you on.. He also has anger management issues and is a complete man-baby. Take your business elsewhere, they do not deserve it. After going on the hellish trail that this ogre sent me on, I called him because I was lost. Two people who started the trail with me turned around, and I should have followed them. They were angry about the experience from the start, but I wanted to keep a positive attitude and have a fun day biking topanga. I kept going following terrible directions until I was fully lost no where near topanga. I called that a*shole with 1% battery left and crying, because I was lost and alone. The sun was going down and I needed help to get home or calm down. What did he do? He started screaming and cursing at me, telling me that I was being demanding by asking for help. I, a small woman who was alone, had to enlist in the help of a random hiker to drive me home. The whole thing was traumatic. I believe that these reviews are fake. Based on what I saw, there is NO WAY that these are real. The owner is the most unprofessional man-child I have ever met and the dude needs anger management courses and his ass kicked. I hope he gets both. Don't believe me? Search 1 star reviews of this place and you will see several accounts that reflect mine. In one, he actually responded whining about what a hard day he was having when he exploded on someone. It reminded me that while he was screaming at me for asking him for help with only 1% battery, he also started crying to me on the phone about his "bad day." He is so pathetic! Dude needs to learn how to handle his emotions because he seems extremely fragile... dangerously so. If you are a woman alone, I recommend going elsewhere. I can't say that you would be safe with him. There are so many bike shops about 10 minutes down the street in Woodland Hills. Go to those and support them. This shop has terrible customer service and is a mess. The only reason they are still around is because Topanga has so few options. But just a quick hop down the road and you'll find a bunch of bike shops with better options, prices, and much customer service. And you won't get attacked by the immature and just plain stupid shop owner in your time of need or safety. Guys here are super helpful and nice. We stopped in to ask about mountain bike rentals and local trails. Rental's are $50/day and they provided us with the most detailed noob friendly map I've ever encountered. As we explored the place we realized the small shop looked like a house. There was a kitchen, bathroom, washer and dryer. We were curious and asked if someone lived there. We were told that it used to be an old house that they converted into a shop. They often use the kitchen to bake breads which they like to share with patrons. Sure enough we rounded the corner and we see some people nibbling on some yummy looking sweet bread. I unfortunately didn't get to sample some but maybe next time. There are also some nice chairs for lounging outside after a ride or to sit in and wait while they work on your bike. Really cool place. Really cool people. Really cool vibe. Tip-If you plan on renting a bike call ahead to insure availability. This place is run by a bunch of really nice guys that support the everyday daily rider. Think utility cycling with a touch of class and no skimping on quality - Nitto and Tubus racks, Arkel and Ortlieb panniers, Chrome bags, Brooks saddles, etc. I go in almost weekly to see if they have anything new. I like their stock of Jamis bikes (the best value in bicycles brands as far as I'm concerned), but they also love doing custom builds and stock frames from Surly, Soma, Salsa, and EAI. In addition to having utility bikes, many of the employees are enthusiastic mountain bikers, fixed gear riders, and tourers. Prices for some things are a little more than you'll find online, but it is very easily worth it for the assistance and advice you'll receive here. In the past, they've gone out of their way to help me hunt down hard-to-find parts, and I've been satisfied with all the work they've done on my bikes (including a custom wheel build). read more

A dozen of us rented bikes for a party and had a wonderful experience. I used to be a mechanic and this is one of my top favorite shops I've been to! The two guys running it were super cool, fed us coffee that was 'ground just down the road..' while the bikes were checked over. We could smell bread baking.. The atmosphere and setup of this shop was so relaxed, I felt and urge to quit my job and pick up an allen wrench again. The owner has a side-business / hobby in leather-working to keep busy, and a hammock out back to not. All our bikes were of modern, decent make, some very high end, a mix of hardtail and dual suspension, some carbon, some Ti. We did a local loop that proved challenging to our group but quite fun. The instructions with pictures helped a lot, and proved to be everything we could have needed. It was a warm day, over 95° so we rationed our water. Exhausted we returned jubilant and half ready to go again! The bikes held up well, I tweaked a couple cables to fine tune, and one guy endo'd and snapped his front brake lever near the end. All in all a great day! I would not hesitate in the slightest to recommend them for your rental needs, and TCO, if you're ever hiring... ;) read more

I stopped by on a whim after a hike with my puppy. The store is a super cute bike and leather goods store with a forest cabin vibe. Every staff member was friendly (I wish I had the name of the man who helped me). They let me bring my dog inside because I did not want to leave her in the car. She's young and made a bit of a scene with her barking, but the staff was all very kind about it. I originally planned to ask questions and purchase a saddle, but because of my puppy, I only purchased some handlebar tape so that I could quickly get her back in the car. I will definitely return back again so that I can focus on talking to the awesome people who run the place (and hopefully get my hands on that saddle)! Great laid back place to rent bikes for the TPC trail that is just a mile away. The Canyon trail is about 10 or so miles along the rim. About a 2 mile initial climb, but so worth it! Make sure you say high to Chris and pet Finnegan the dog. If you are lucky after the ride there might be some fresh banana bread and coffee when you are done for the day. I dropped off my P2 TT Cervelo to get a tune up. It was quite an ordeal with customer service, quality of service, and bike damage. I was very disappointed with Topanga Creek Cycles for many reasons. However, we all make mistakes. And with each mistake we learn how to navigate with the next customer. They apologized for their services and refunded the money. They also included money to fix bike damage along with a gift card with a handwritten note of apology. They guarantee their services and that is their new ideology with customers. Nestled in the hills of Topanga Canyon resides this bicycle shop / hangout / place just about anybody who has ever longed to open their own business would be green with envy to emulate. My girlfriend and I stopped by looking for a Brooks saddle and found what I was looking for ... and more! This place has some of the most helpful people you could ever hope to meet along with an atmosphere (tucked underneath huge trees with a creek next to the store) that begs you to take a load off, hang out in their hammocks while taking advantage of the open WiFi, and maybe stick around and join the staff while they BBQ up some chicken or whatever happens to be on the menu for that day. Hard to believe any of the reviews before this are real considering what happened five minutes ago. I'm a new local to Topanga from Santa Monica. I just got a flat on my Intense 29er so I thought I would stop by to pick up a tube. It was 5:30 and the store apparently closes at 6pm. I walked through the gate and see three people sitting around chatting. I ask the guy sitting there (40 something NY'er looking guy) if he has a 700c x 42 tube. I just got a flat. He tells me they are closed and that the tube is "way in the back and would be really difficult to get and if I could come back tomorrow". I said sure what time do you open, fully intending NOT to come back. Seriously, what a joke. I know it was only a tube but I thought this was supposed to be a local little shop providing service. They greet you when you wander in, they ask how you are when you stand around looking a little lost, and they even offered their next door neighbor (some Asian lady who sells designer handbag knock-offs) a donut (which she gladly took. I really wanted to take one too, but I've already reached my donut quota for the year). It's like...wait!? Why are you so friendly!? You should look down on me from the hipster-environmentally-friendly-I-also-drive-a-hybrid pedestal with such disdain because I don't really bike and sometimes I let my car engine idle for no reason!! But, alas, no. These guys want to be your best friend. Ok. I have no words for what this place is. It's like a magic Scooby Doo cottage of magic in the middle of mountains where the most kind and generous people want you to have fun. They cook, they make leather and organizational tools out of old beat up guitars. They make you feel at home and capable and put wind under you for the ride. They are giants. When we came in yesterday, the owner Christopher and his dog, Rover and another member of the Outpost family, Jay, had been attacked just one day previous by a roving pit bull and were all pretty beat up. Regardless, Chris gave us impeccable attention and Rover gave us his love - even though I'm sure he's scared. This place is a haven of "yes, you can." and we had such a wondrous experience. I walked around the corner into this bike shop (which is half outside under pine trees) and I found a bunch of (muddy and some bleeding) mountain bikers drinking coffee and eating banana bread in Adirondack chairs. A whole bunch of them had just gotten back from a ride that ended at the bike shop. The extremely chill guys running the place offered me coffee and banana bread (very tasty, I must add, perhaps they should open a bakery if the bike shop doesn't work out) Anyway, I sat around and found myself being able to ask questions and not feeling like I was out of place and I learned a lot, not just from the owners of the shop but by the other dudes hanging out rambling about the ride they had just gotten back from. (A few were a little over the top, but, hey, it is cool to hear people who love their hobbies.) These guys (who definately are into what they do) carry some very cool bikes and the people at the place are authentic mountain bikers, the whole experience was really refreshing because the people were real and the place is located in the middle of LA. read more

If this joint was on the west-side, it's the only shop I would give my business to. However, it is not, so sometimes I have to go to more expensive or less-stocked shops with service that is WAY below the level you will find at Hollywood Pro Bikes. These guys are the nicest, most genuine people who all just love riding and want you to love it too (while helping you build something you'll be eager to show off). I had Spencer at the shop help me out with a fixie conversion, and he was a gem. The shop had everything I needed, and the guys there were all almost as excited as I was to see how SICK my bike came out. Chris, the owner, even gasped asking "Is that the same bike that came in here this morning!?!?!?" when I took it outside to give the finished product a spin. Why, yes, Chris. It is. TCB set us up quickly with some killer bikes, gave us a detailed trail map to a 10 mile loop, also showed us the EveryTrail app and we were on our way. TCB is a great shop for those in town that want to buy a quality bike that will last them for a good 5+ years. Service wise, I'm sure they're also on the ball as a customer actually brought their bikes from Hawaii for TCB to work on ... wow. It's a special place in the world. I don't usually engage in hyperbole. Here, though, it's warranted. TCO is among the best places in Los Angeles. Not bike shops. Places. I've bought multiple bikes from them, plus bike packing gear, brooks saddles, and sundry other things. They do that stuff exceedingly well. It's the other stuff, though. Banana bread after Saturday shop rides, camping trips, trying new things (currently leather work and artisanal pencils). So often the city moves too quickly. This is my favorite shop in LA. It's not the place you're going to duck into because you need a tube (unless you're on your way to ride Topanga St Park or climbing the canyons on your road bike), but it is THE BEST place for you to go design and build a custom ride. They carry great lines like BMC, Salsa, Waterford, Pivot, Jamis, and even Surly for the hipsters, and they know how to help you build up the bike that will do what you want. I have personally had them spec and build a great commuter bike and a very high-end fully custom road bike. Chris and Scott both know how to get it done, and Scott is among the best mechanics in town. You will now have problems with their work. In fact, I first went to them to solve a problem caused by another local shop and have been going back ever since. Go up there, hang out in the yard, check out some bikes (like their awesome demo program where you can ride some of the best bikes and builds available before you decide what to buy), and feel what it is like to buy a bike from a shop run by people who just like bikes. read more

Had a great experience with them buying my Surly Straggler. I had to drive up from San Diego, we always hate the LA traffic but when I got there what a cool area, wish I could spend more time there. They spent a good amount of time fitting me, they put on the water bottle cages, etc, that I wanted, they suggested a great first ride on Mulholland. Fantastic! Since then, nothing. They took my picture, but I didn't see it on their website, I messaged them about that, no reply. No big deal, a picture. Now, six months later, I've ridden the bike a lot and am preparing to take it on a tour in Africa. I need a lower gear, I found that out on the Belgian Wafer ride. I send them e-mail. No reply. They have a snarky blurb somewhere on their literature, or a sign in their store, about not thinking they should give free advice after you buy a bike from them. Well, I wasn't looking for free advice, I was looking for advice on what part(s) to buy, and might have bought from them. This is LA attitude? Or what? Another excellent experience here. I recently moved to LA and was looking for a solid bike to start commuting to work. I knew I wanted to look into single-speed bikes ('fixies') but didn't know too much about them. They are a small shop, so they only had one in stock, but it was an excellent choice and I liked it from the start. There was no pressure at all for a sale, and the shop's owner took his time with me to ensure I liked the bike, understood a few different options, and had plenty of time to try it out. They even installed a back brake for me on the spot (I wasn't quite cool enough to only have the front brake). Very highly recommended, and I will certainly be back. Any premium on price, etc. that might exist (I didn't really shop around) should certainly be counteracted by the knowledge of the staff and its well-considered selection of gear. read more

In a city plagued by shitty bike shops, this place is Willy Wonka's goddamn candy factory, and the novice rider as well as the hardcore, U-Lock toting messenger alike can walk in here and feel equally welcome. In such a sprawling, car Dependant metropolis that is so often characterized as being shallow and judgmental, this place really is an amazing find. It defies logic. Chris and his boys over at Pro Bikes do what they love, and they know the field inside out. Regardless of how little you know about bikes, I assure you, you'll never leave this place feeling A) like you've been taken advantage of, or B) like you're an joke for even TRYING to ride a bike because you don't have a clue how the thing works. They stock some of the hottest, hardest to find, sweeter than candy, and oft- embarrassingly erection inducing gear you'll find this side of the europe. If you so much as ask about something-- say, for instance, that beautiful, gleaming, limited edition colored Sugino component set back there-- just WATCH as the eyes light up behind the counter! These guys are all incredibly helpful and are seriously ACHING for the chance to just talk about the stuff they sell and love so much. They'll pull things out of the case and make you hold them, touch them; seriously. They'll watch you, equally prideful of what they carry, and terrified that you just mightbuy the thing. If you ride fixed gear and feel the need to accessorize, I guarantee you'll have no trouble finding things to spend as much money as you please here. ...and, just in case you take that as a challenge and have simply TOO MUCH money and just can't think of ways to spend it all on new bars and other high end components, they do amazing, custom wheel builds as well. read more

I have never bought a bike before but I thought I knew what I wanted after doing some research online. So I called the guys at Topanga Creek Outpost to set up a time to try some bikes. When I got there, the first thing that happened was that Max offered me some banana bread that they just pulled out of the oven. Who even does that anymore? Afterwards, Chris helped me out and had me test ride a bunch of bikes to see which one I liked. It turned out that the bike that I thought I wanted wasn't what I wanted all along. Instead of pushing for a sale, Chris thoughtfully addressed my concerns and tried to figure out what works best for me. He suggested that I try other brands and even other stores. I walked out of the store without a bike, but I have absolute faith and trust in Chris and the team after seeing that they care about their customers more than they care about the sale. I highly recommend the guys at this shop because I know they will work with you, instead of just trying to work you. Anyone who wants an honest bike buying experience, this is the place to go. This shop is the pinnacle of cool. The people are great, but by virtue of your interest in bikes, you are welcomed into the club with open arms. The shop is great, and feels like you have walked past the rope cordon at a museum into the exhibit but with bike gear mixed in with antique horseshoes. The bikes are great, with everything up to full suspension to satisfy any customer. We rented a second full suspension bike to hit the local trails. It was lots of fun, with several encouraging interactions with locals. Horse rider, trail maintenance crew, neighbor and security guard all had smiles. Maybe they put something funny in the water in Topanga Canyon to make everyone happy? I see there are some concerns on yelp about the telephone not being answered. This may or may not be a phone place, but it is an email, website or in-person place. The kind of place where the people stand behind their work and support their customers.
