This is one of the best Thai restaurants in the area. Food here is so flavorful and delicious. My phone died on me before I could take pics to share but we ordered the Topaz puffs and spring rolls for appetizers. We shared entree of Volcano chicken and Thai fried rice. Which was more than enough for two ppl. The service is awesome at Topaz. The owner has a very friendly personality and will keep a smile on your face during your dining experience. It tasted like regular mango juice, but it was good indeed and a tall glass! :) My partner had pineapple fried fried with chicken and shrimp. It was delicious. Undoubtably the yummiest Thai food in New Jersey! I caught wind of this place when talking to a friend about restaurants etc. and when we got on the topic of best Thai food around he mentioned topaz in Belleville, I was rather skeptical, it seems everyone has there favorite when it comes to Thai. But in the end a few months later I gave it a go when in the area and HOLY SHIT! I was blown away... First time around I ordered the massaman chicken curry and spilt there "local favorite" Thai tacos for an app... Oh my sweet baby Jesus I could prolly eat 20 of them little tasty bastards!!! Perfect break up restaurant. Why? Because it's classy and chic, there's lots of cushions to shove slap your (new) ex and the place is small enough to cause a big scene but not in front of too many people. I guess the place is nice for a first date too. Now if your just date-less, Mama's Coconut Shrimp is worth the trip here. I can finish an order and I'm already day dreaming of the next batch. These crunchy little gifts from heaven are placed on a bed of a mango/cilantro/apple salad of gods. Their pad Thai is the other thing I usually order, but not as impressive as other places. Chicken satay is decent as well. Overall I really enjoy this place, more for the ambiance and coconut shrimp than anything else. I love Thai food...don't always like the prices, but I love the flavors in good Thai food. A co-worker of mine had a craving today and convinced me to give Topaz a try for lunch...and when another co-worker chimed in about how good it was I figured-what the heck. Place was pretty empty when we arrived and we were told to seat ourselves. A quick read of the lunch specials ($8-$9, how can you go wrong?) and I was ready to order. Our salads came out quickly - a simple side salad with peanut dressing...delicious dressing! We both also ordered the Tom Kha Gai soup and it was a generous portion as compared to other places I've tried. The soup was really tasty, but I should have ordered it with a little spice. Other than a big noodle soup I would order as a meal, this is probably my favorite and they hit the nail on the head. I ordered the Red Curry with chicken and my coworker had the Spicy Basil Noodles with chicken. My co-worker really liked his meal...except about 1/4 of the way through he realized there was no chicken. The server (I don't think this was "Mama") quickly made it right and brought him back a new plate of the noodles WITH the chicken this time. My Red Curry with chicken (I ordered it spicy) was really one of the best I've had. The spice was just right and the portion was perfect-I walked away full. The veggies were fresh, but the one thing I'd say is it could have used a little more chicken. I'd actually be willing to give this place a try for dinner (probably under Adam D's protests) to try some of the other options on the menu (as well as the Thai iced tea). Parking was fine as the place was dead - we parked in the lot adjacent to the restaurant and a quarter gets you an hour on the meter. My only real complaint was the $15 minimum for using a credit card...yes, it's on their website and it was probably on the menu, but it would have been a real pain in the neck if I was there alone since I had no cash on me. I'd like to give this place 4 stars, but it wasn't quite there today for me. I WILL, however, give them another shot soon and would love to be able to bump this up to 4-stars after another visit. My husband, Andrew G, said most of what I had to say about this place. We were super excited to go to dinner and fretting over where to eat for hours. We stumbled upon Topaz and we were sold because of the stellar reviews. I went with 2 stars because I enjoyed the dumplings (sauce was tasty) and my chicken Rama peanut sauce was good! However, the chicken reminded me of frozen chicken you get at a Chinese restaurant. One thing to add about Mama was that she even brought out an iPad to share a video of the blood moon news coverage from the night before. If there's one thing we all know it's how taboo it is when someone at the dinner table is using an electronic device. I came here the Saturday before Valentines day, since the original place closed two hours earlier than normal and I am so glad I did! This place is romantic and charming, great for first dates or dinner with friends. BYOB and really decent pricing. Duck was delicious, the pad thai wasn't as strong with the peanut taste but still amazing! Parking is a little bit of a hassle since the lot next to it shares with the whole plaza and the street parking was non-existent. This could be because of the snow we just had but we figured it out. I've got to give this place the props it deserves. It became my favorite eatery in the area while working in Newark. Wow what a cute Thai restaurant! A few friends brought me this evening for dinner and it was quite a nice place - they even dimmed the lights as it got dark out to make it a bit more intimate. As Thai food goes, they seem to have it down pat with the menu. Everything you'd expect from pad Thai, fried rice, curry, iced tea... We shared some appetizers of pan fried dumplings and topaz puffs which were nice and fresh with great sauces. I ordered a shrimp spicy basil noodle and it was on point! Plenty of veggies and noodles but I did feel that my plate was smaller than the mound of fried rice that my friends had ordered!! Savory and well-blended flavors with the kick of basil. My friend always gets the green curry and it did not disappoint her either. First time: I ordered take-out. The atmosphere is clean, cozy, and cute. I ordered the papaya salad, chicken satay, and tom yum soup with tofu. I really, really like this place! Once again I find myself coming back here. Beef Pad See Ew is just too damn good! The pan seared dumplings were DELISH and the sauce that accompanied it was awesome. The spring rolls were okay, not really my thing to begin with. They have the best Tom Yum soup for real (I ordered shrimp this time)! The funny thing is I don't think they have the best Chicken Pad Thai (go figure), but for me everything else is perfection! My aunt ordered the Bangkok Noodles because she can't handle spice, it was a hit! Everyone at the table tried it and loved it. Always yummy in my tummy. Tonight I ordered the steamed dumplings and burned the roof of my mouth due to impatience. Filled with chicken and spices, this dumpling belted me for a ride to flavor town. And similar to a shumai, the cup-like shell was substantial enough to withstand all of this flavor without being so thin that filling was lost. The sauced served to accompany the "dumps" was thicker than a soy sauce but not as thick as a glaze. It was tasty though. Savory umami all in the place. My order...crispy basil duck. I've never ordered duck before. I was told to expect a tender dark meat chicken kind of thing. And that, it was. There was a textural offset though. Crisy top and soggy bottom and fatty cubes and tender meat and cartilage??? I ate the parts I could keep down and left the rest... Literally left my packaged leftovers on the table...on purpose. Didn't help that the inside of my mouth was singed and raw so, anything I would have eaten after the dumps wouldn't have been pleasurable. Overall, the flavor was great. Flavors are always great here. Prices are decent, a little high for a rustic Thai place but won't break the bank. Oh, and I almost forgot. The dessert of encrusted poundcake was soo good. Enjoy. The waiter there does not seem the understand what "hot sauce" is and gave us sweet chili sauce instead. Tom Kha soup tastes like it comes from a can, and wet tofu was just floating in it along with entire bay leaves. The Pad Thai is also tomato ketchup based not tamarind based. Came out soggy and cold. Oh no they didn't serve me Shrimp Pad Thai with just FOUR little pieces of overcooked shrimp. C'mon, why so stingy? Noodles were greasy and a bit too sweet. This is a basic Thai American dish. How can they mess it up so badly? Green curry should have been described as a soup since the sauce was so thin. Hardly any pieces of chicken either. Probably the Best Thai restaurant I've been to so far. I haven't gone to many, but I can imagine it would be pretty difficult for any Thai restaurant in NJ to come close to this one. Almost everything we ordered was the best dish I've had so far, when compared to other restaurants who serve these type of items. I had such a good time eating here that I made myself order more dishes than I usually eat! Service: The service was also very friendly and helpful with everything. 4/5 Atmosphere: The restaurant had a very homey and comfortable feeling to it. 4/5 First off, the Mussels in the steamed pot was probably the best mussel dish I have ever had. I tend to stay away from Mussels because they have this distinct flavor which isn't always appetizing, especially when it isn't cooked right, but this place made the mussels so good we ordered two! The key to eating these mussels is to dig deep in the pot full of mussels, get a spoonful of sauce and eat both simultaneously. An awesome dish I've got to say! If there is a dish that represents something really amazing in this restaurant, so far the Mussels do it for me. The Mussels were cooked just right, the sauce wasn't to heavy or to light, and incredibly flavorful. The Tom Yum soup was just real comfort food soup, which was sour and slightly spicy The Pad Thai wasn't dry as most restaurants make it, and it had a good amount of sweetness to it that wasn't overwhelming to me. The Basil Duck was crispy, flavorful and meaty. Most restaurant I go to, the duck is full of bones and there is barely any real food that you eat, but this duck was almost completely removed from the bone, full of flavor and had a lot of meat. The Chicken Fried rice was good. I probably prefer Chinese fried rice over this, but it was still very good. The Fried Ice Cream was not to sweet and the breading tasted like it could've been a separate desert. A good item to cap off the meal. Last I had the Pumpkin tart which was their special for the season. It was smooth, pumpkiny and had somewhat of a toasty flavor. In short, this restaurant is one of the restaurants on my list that I would definitely recommend people to go to! Lunch specials are great, dinner can easily get very expensive when you want to taste everything but here's the rundown on everything you must try. Thai tea (of course) Pineapple fried rice is amazing. Add chicken beef or pork, they only give about 4 pieces of shrimp so for the price it's not really worth it, but still tastes amazing. Pad Thai is my go to favorite. Even if you ask for a "little" spicy it is VERY spicy so be conscious about what has heat if you're sensitive to spicy food. Topaz salad is great and their dressing is one of my favorites. I believe you can even buy it to go if you like it that much. Topaz noodles with mama's secret sauce is to die for. The sauce makes the dish. And to finish off volcano chicken is all time favorite. They even provide a beef version which is just as amazing. Come here with an appetite. And BYOB! Me and my girlfriend went here on a Friday night for dinner and it was a good thing we did. This used to be out go to spot for thai food but havnt been here for a couple years. This time around the place has been rennovated its the same size but more tables and modern design. We were seated immediately and the waiter took care of us. Now the food. We ordered the their famous thai tacks which did not dissapoint. The cilantro really made the dish top notch. On a damp, summer, rainy night, look no further than ordering some Thai take out from Topaz! We ordered our food over the phone to pick up our food and it was ready and hot within 15 minutes. We picked up our appetizer, Thai Tacos, and WOW they were amazing! The bits of ginger over beef, all on top of a crunchy shell = need to have this every day of the week. Best Thai restaurant I've been to. Started going here in high school and the food is still just as delicious. "Mama" is the most welcoming and accommodating owner I have ever met! I also had the fried calamari with sriracha dipping sauce. The sauce was basically straight up sriracha so it's not for the faint of hear. That was a very tasty dish: very fragrant with the lemongrass. The dish that was really tasty was their fried rice dish with tempura shrimp, bacon, pineapple and other veg. The bacon in there added something extra to it! Had the battered 'pound cake' for dessert. However, the cake wasn't plain pound cake. It was banana nut bread.
