This was easily my best experience at a brewery. I'm biased because it's arguably my favorite brewery, but the staff was so attentive and wiling to help when I asked about the new beers they had on draft. Since this brewery has more hype going that Flavor Flav, I had to try it out on my way to Minneapolis. Friends of mine in SE Iowa own a great little craft beer bar. According to them, TG is illusive and hard to procure if you aren't a major player in the distribution world. People on my local STL beer enthusiast sites are constantly trading or seeking TG for trades, so I knew the beer would be good. The tap room, however, could use a little love. The bar is set up as a former sandwich shop or dive bar. It's oddly angled and has very little seating available, although there is a patio and several tables inside. There are approximately 6 taps at the front bar and the rest are located in the back behind the bar which looks to have once been a small kitchen. This confused me. For having such wonderfully raved about beers, you would think they would want to showcase their taps. Another nitpicky thing I found was that ALL of their glassware was chilled. Not just shaker pints, but snifters, as well. This is a huge no-no in the craft beer world. Drinking beer from a chilled glass inhibits the true flavors and aromas. I assume they are appealing to their clientele, but this totally caught me off guard. Tap room aside, the beers were great. We tried the Pompeii, Mornin Latte, Naughty 90, Psuedo Sue, Hopsmack, and Golden Nugget. The bartenders were friendly and quick. We took some package bottles home, but wish there was a larger selection. Although this brewery may be going through some growing pains, if you are ever in the area you should stop in and taste. read more

Beer selection was amazing. We started off at the upstairs bar. Slim selection of beer up there. Had one and went downstairs. Waited half an hour for a seat at the bar. Waited 15 minutes for service and to have glasses from before us to be cleared. Server was nice but walked by several times and didn't acknowledge we had empty glasses. Ordered the loaded chips, or order was lost. 46 minutes later we got it. Cold. Needed salt, and wasn't anything to write home about. My boyfriend makes better at home. I have no idea what was up two weekends ago but I hope its not always like that. I'd been here once last spring and they had good beer selection, lots of variety- stouts, sours, etc. So last week I drove 90 mins to take two of my friends there for the first time. They had 10 beers on the menu and EIGHT were IPAs, then one pilsner and one stout. My friends and I hate IPAs so we drove all the way there to try two beers. I even asked what else they might have and they were out of anything else. I know they're famous for IPAs but a tasting room needs much more variety. IPAs only have two flavors, really hoppy and insanely hoppy. Otherwise its a cool place and the servers are nice but please add some variety. read more

We did a road trip to escape and see the world or more accurately Bluff Country of southeast MN and northeast Iowa. With things finally slowly opening downtown Decorah was kind of a drag and our desk clerk at the hotel told us to come in. It was great advice. Some awesome beer is turned out of this small town in Iowa. Easy drive from MN, which I would recommend for a special beer release. Taproom itself is quaint with a pretty nondescript exterior. My wife and I made the 4-1/2 hour beer run from NW suburbs of Chicago on Tuesday 7/25/17! Two stops in mind duh! Toppling Goliath and Pulpit Rock! Fist stop Toppling Goliath Brewing! Got there about 2:00 pm they open at noon on Tuesday, 3 hours earlier than second stop! Had decent beers on tap! But the best selection this week were the 22-oz Bombers! King Sue, Fire Skulls & Money, Sosus, and Hopsmack all available in bombers! Tried them all last night definitely worth the trip! Loved all of these IPA, guess if I had to pick would be King Sue, followed closely by Fire Skulls & Money! Thanks TGB! read more

We are from Cleveland, Ohio and drove all the way out here and I just want to say that it did not disappoint! The food was amazing. Try the Thai peanut pizza! And the beers... oh my gosh the beers.. we tried everything that they have on tap and we loved everything which is so rare. The staff is also so so incredibly nice! Taproom leaves something to be desired, but when you get your first taste of the orange-juice all-citra PseudoSue or the grapefruit-bomb Pompeii, you're sucked into a magical portal of delicious beer that erases time and place. The beer was good. The building was clean. The staff was not so welcoming. I've been around the country and visited several microbreweries and taprooms and there was a bit of a strained confusion as newcomers entered the tap room. No welcome or hello by the staff and we were unaware if we were to order at the bar (and if so where) and where to get a beer menus. Our flights were great tasting but again it was awkward as the bartender had to ask another patron for their flight board so our order could be completed. Overall lack of communication from staff left the atmosphere feeling cold even though the beer was above average. In a world of growing microbreweries and new people experiencing tap rooms for the first time I just hope people don't get the "beer snob" vibe because this establishment does have something to offer in regards to their brews. read more

The beers here were pretty good. I had the Pompeii and the Naughty 90. They were both really good beers. The only things to be aware of is that: (a) they don't have food there so you have to have it delivered; and (b) parking can be a little tight around there. Otherwise if you are in Decorah you should totally visit this place. read more

As a student in Decorah this was the epitome of awesome. I was not a beer person for most of school but TG helped guide my tastes to the dark side. A very relaxed atmosphere with occasional live music and other activities. It was a great place to bring homework in or come with a group to work on something. Disappointing. After driving 3 hrs to visit the "best" brewery in Iowa I expected more. Beer is good but not amazing so not sure why people trade their bottles for hundreds of dollars. Wasn't greeted, nobody even made eye contact with us, even as they were just standing around. Tried to order from three different locations/bartenders (upstairs and downstairs) and continued to be ignored. If your bartenders are ignoring the people sitting right in front of them and serving the people that have just walked up to the right and to the left you have a serious training problem. We even asked someone if we could order a couple of beers, but they were a "server." The least they could have done is directed someone that could serve us our direction. We finally decided to just leave but as walking out felt bad that we had come all that way so ended up finally flagging a guy down in the "to go" area. The place didn't even seem that busy with the staff on hand, and I don't mind waiting, but it is terrible customer service when you aren't even acknowledging your customers. Finished half the beer and left. This place definitely doesn't live up to the hype. read more

Took a road trip out to Decorah from Iowa City and Toppling Goliath was a must. I wasn't sure what to expect because the brewery was on the outskirts of town, but the atmosphere was spacious and inviting. The beer selection was much bigger than I expected, with a bunch of IPAs and pale ales, a few sours, and some stouts. Pretty good variety. Unfortunately the beer menu wasn't completely up to date--the first two beers I tried to order were unavailable. I ended up with a double IPA (Dolphin Sparkles) and was very impressed with both my drink and the price. The food was just as good. I ordered the Cubano, featuring homemade pickles and house made potato chips on the side, and it was delicious. My boyfriend ordered the house burger and mentioned (multiple times) that it was the best burger he'd ever had. I was able to snag a few bites and I didn't disagree. It was so juicy and flavorful--on my next visit I'll be sure to order one for myself. Our service was a little slow; we had to wait several minutes with empty glasses on our next round of beers, but our server seemed to be the only one on the floor, so I'm sure they were just understaffed. Overall, the food and drinks were more than satisfactory and the prices were better than expected. Being the tourists that we were, on our way out we wanted some TG swag. While there was a large selection of t-shirts, the sizes were not well stocked, so we were unable to find our sizes in a majority of the shirts. Not a major complaint, but it would've been nice to leave with a souvenir. read more

This rating is on Taproom experience...Absolutely the worst and unfriendliest taproom I have ever been to! As you know they have good beer I'm not going to go down that road! What I will tell you is I've been in there 3 to 4 separate occasions and have never been greeted with a smile, hello, how are you etc... and it was not on nights that they were too busy. Last time I was in I watched all the women bartenders to see if they would ever smile throughout my time there to anyone... zero never!! I've had much friendlier people at McDonald's for heaven sake's!! Talked to many people in town and they seem to agree very much!! Pulpit rock on the other hand is completely awesome! And the beer is just as good!! Last few times I was there pulpit rock was packed and barely anyone in toppling Goliath! Do you think that says anything? I will never ever ever go to this taproom again and most likely will not buy any of their beers even though they are world class beers! There are many world-class beers out there!! I wonder if this attitude comes down from the owner or manager!? All I can tell you is it sucks!! Maybe they need to have a beer or two while they're working!! We have been here numerous times, every-time is gets worse and worse to be honest. My friends and I are from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, so this is about a 8 hour plus drive round trip for us. Every time we visit your restaurant seems always understaffed. I understand mistakes happen, people are new. But what happened today during our service was terrible, we sat right away, didn't seem too busy, we ordered beers (we came to pick up our term oil monster cookie bottles) so we wanted to try some and take our time. Ordered appetizers: cheese curds and loaded chips. Ordered more beer, no appetizers to be seen. Then he took our order for food, ordered 2 pizzas. 30 minutes go by, as we see multiple appetizers go out (we were sat by the kitchen) never got our appetizers. Asked about them, he asked us questions that we weren't asked previously which made it seem as if he didn't put our order in. He blamed the kitchen staff, said there were new people but Tyler didn't even apologize to us. We basically demanded our appetizers be free, as we knew there weren't going to be any comps on our bill. No manager came to the table to apologize. Also after the server knew he messed up, he didn't come back to check in on us, didn't take more drink orders, give us more water or give us condiments. All we wanted was an apology but instead we will never come back again and we won't recommend it. Should stick to the brewery portion and ditch the restaurant portion. Not very happy! read more
