It was finely ground similar to a canned style. I couldn't believe the amount they gave me. It covered the entire plate. For being homemade the hash was a little disappointing. I thought it was kinda bland and the potato overpowered the meat. I regret not getting the Irish Benedict because it probably would have had more flavor but adding some hot sauce helped. Meanwhile, the people I went with ordered pizza that was 30% crust....on a frozen crust. Don't get the magherita pizza, it's loaded with three "pizzas" worth of cheese and a few pieces of tomato tucked underneath the cheese. Zero quality control. My husband and I go to Tops often enough and it's always good. They have great desserts. On Sunday, I ordered online for delivery and our food was delivered by Door Dash. The driver just dropped the food of and 'dashed' as expected. Well, my entire dinner and a few condiments were missing. I called the driver right away, maybe a minute after it was delivered and asked if he still had a bag for me. He was rambling telling me he was already on the other side of Schenectady, that was BS. Anyway, I gave up on him and called Tops, they felt really bad and wanted to make it right. My husband ran over to the restaurant and picked up my dinner. Have been going to Tops on and off for over a decade. It's felt like there has been a slight decline over the past few years but my last visit this past week will genuinely be my last. Service was extremely slow, but I can overlook that if it is a busy night or they are short staffed. Everything we ordered was subpar. Main courses were stale, some were cold, some were over cooked. Ordered a slice of cake for dessert and it was dry and stale, clearly having sit out in the display case for a day or two (at least). From just the food alone, I would not seek Tops out again. There is, however, one other aspect that solidifies my decision to never return. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Around the bar, the news TV was playing Fox News. The staff appeared busy and cheerful adding to the positive vibe. After requesting a "table for two," the hostess agreed to our suggestion waiting at the bar with her promise of a 10-minute wait. The bar showcased a diverse selection of liquors and beers, yet, unfortunately, we weren't attended to during our 10-minute wait. Cold Adirondack Pilsners swiftly arrived, and Jillian suggested a few extra minutes for us to peruse the extensive menu, featuring over 120 items. Opting for the January special--6oz Ribeye and Crab stuffed shrimp with rice and broccoli, and from the regular menu, the 12oz NY Strip with grilled wild mushrooms--we added Caesar salads as our choice of soup or salad. Our high hopes took a hit when our dinners arrived. While the steaks were flawlessly cooked (medium rare for the ribeye and rare for the NY strip), anything not from a pre-made Sysco package lacked seasoning entirely--no salt, pepper, or butter. The only flavor on the steaks seemed to be accidental splatters from nearby on the flat-top griddle during cooking. Surprisingly, the stuffed shrimp and sauce were the only highlights, possibly because they originated from a box. I sympathize with the regulars who think they're getting a quality meal. Setting that aside, let's focus on the positives - Our server, Jillian, provided solid service, being attentive without rushing us. We truly appreciated her excellent service. The food and customer service were equally terrible. Their kids menu is not kid friendly at all. Why in the world would you offer soup to a small child and not have an alternative? The potato wedges were the farthest thing to a French fry and I tasted one. They were dry and old tasting. My chicken was tough, my husband's burger was raw in the middle and the burger buns were stale and dry. You can get a typical breakfast or something unusual like the morning quesadilla. It was very good. Our waitress Charlie was great. Got my usual, basic burger with onion rings and a side of bbq, I like to make a rodeo style burger. Came with no onion rings, waited another 20 minutes for those. By then, the burger was dead. Waited another 15 minutes for the bbq sauce I asked 3 times for. Would of been fine if our glasses weren't empty the whole time, we could of at least drank. Would have gotten dessert to go also, but instead were just given the check. Paid $50+ for a lousy drink and inedible food. We recently ordered the homemade corn beef hash family breakfast deal, the description say it feeds 4 but it was more like 10+ servings, and just as good as dining in. If you find yourself at the "5 corners" in Rotterdam, stop at Tops. Amble parking and plenty of seating among the decorative palm trees. (Not sure what the palms did or were supposed to be conveying.) I have a few go-to items for new eateries: buffalo chicken wraps, roast beef sandwich or a salad. Pictures already online showed a roast beef sandwich, which if the picture is accurate, would have to be my selection. My roast beef club was all that you would hope a great sandwich could or would be. The side of steak fries was amble enough for me and my partner with extra fries left. Lovely crisp on the outside with the lovely texture in the middle that makes you keep eating until you can't eat any more. Club was filled with a layer of devine rare roast beef. Ahhh. My favorite. And then there's the layer of lettuce, tomato and bacon. You need to unhinge your jaw to fit this sammy square in your mouth. Also accompanying this sandwich was a bowl of cole slaw and a quarter pickle. My meal was well worth the stop. SO chose a beef pot roast. It did not have the visual appeal I expected, nor was the cut a pot roast piece of meat. His sides looked better. Are desserts homemade? Unknown. To say that my grandson didn't have a special birthday even while mommy and daddy were in Rochester at a wedding. Well he did. Tops American Grill & Bakery in Rotterdam brought out a cake and the staff sang Happy Birthday. To say this little boy isn't a celeb at that diner is an understatement. He got to meet the owner of the diner this morning at breakfast. What a great group of people at that diner. We will forever be grateful and come back every time we're up here. We wouldn't go back, but it was okay. We went on a busy Saturday and were seated quickly. They were out of two drinks listed on the menu, no biggie. We had our kids with us and the soup that came with their kids' meals came out quickly and was good. Then the wait began. I kinda knew we were in for it when some time had passed and the server came back to ask me where on the menu my burger had been. I pointed it out to her and was like, OK we're going to be a bit with the food. But it took a very long time for the food to come out, and when it did, it was not accurate. My burger had bacon on it (bacon wasn't listed on the menu, which I double checked after it arrived). I don't eat pork, but didn't want to make a big deal about it so just took it off. The burger was also missing the Chipotle mayo listed in the menu description, and the avocade was under ripe. Worse, the burger was really dry. I did order it well done, but you can get a good burger fully cooked. This wasn't one of them. My husband got his burger medium and it was also dry. One kids' meal had a slightly burned pizza, the other (chicken tenders) was fine. The fries had potential, but the larger fries were undercooked. We were never able to get another round of drinks because our server didn't check back in a timely fashion (she was new and this was honestly the least annoying part of the experience). This place is also a bakery, but my little one didn't like the cookie that came with her meal and neither did my husband. Tops is located at the five corners of Rotterdam. I lived in a house right down the street for years and it was a go to spot. Breakfast is outstanding and pretty generous. Huge omelettes. The combination omelette is a favorite. The waffles are wonderful and my wife LOVES the French toast. Pass on the pancakes... not so nice. I also love the sausage gravy and biscuits and the corned beef is from scratch. They have lots sandwich options and typical diner fare. Alcohol is available (full service bar). They try to have more upscale dinner options.... things you would not expect from a diner. Soup ranges from excellent to mediocre. Don't order anything with tomato sauce.
