I wanted to love this place as I've read great reviews. We decided to go for breakfast and they did have a lot of regular customers. We ordered 2 breakfasts. 2 juices and a coffee. One omelet with an extra order of toast that never came. My breakfast was supposed to be $14.99. Eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, ham and homefries. A lot for $14.99. I asked for all bacon instead of the ham and sausage. The waitress said well that's a waste, I can do it different. Ok. Our meals came. My scrambled eggs reminded me of scrambled eggs at a buffet. The pancakes had a hard top. Butter melted but not into the pancake. Syrup didn't soak into it either. Do the cook them ahead and reheat on the griddle? Idk but my breakfast was warm not hot by any means. The best part of the breakfast was the juice. We had a baby shower catered from Carol's Place and the food was delicious and beautifully presented - sandwiches, wraps, croissants filled with shrimp and crab sald, mini subs with fresh and delicious roast beef, turkey, cheese wraps and a wonderful assortment of salads. Desserts from Bella Napoli were scrumptious. Anita did a wonderful job helping me plan and created a delicious spread. Our server, Jessica was amazing - fast and efficient and gracious to our guests. Went for dinner on a Friday. Just felt like pizza and it did not disappoint only thing I would change is slightly less sauce but that is a personal preference. Our waiter Austin Gets 5 stars because he was hustling!!!. Two other waitstaff working one an older blonde unfriendly and a middle aged brunette spent our first 15 minutes in the restaurant having a full on conversation with a customer at the counter didn't even stop speaking with her long enough to pay attention to the people at the counter she was pouring coffee for. As we sat and waited to be served, our waiter acknowledged us really quickly but he was working so hard running food, coffee, menus that it took him a minute - poor guy it was obvious who is expected to work and who can take a minute or 10 in that establishment, I took a good look at the ambiance of the space. It's interesting when a place has so much going on and is devoid of character, just a blah beige space. Now the food. Solid portions, but average food at prices that are on the high side of standard. I had a Belgian waffle. It was served on a plate with a dusting of powdered sugar and 4 packs of butter, 2 containers of syrup, and the sausage link side I ordered. The waffle was very plain, it was a very standard bland waffle on the soggy side. The sausage was very greasy. My son ordered the farmer and asked for his potatoes to be fried - those potatoes were so good the seasoning was spot on and most of them were cooked perfectly - I few over size chunks were a little firm and bland. The omelette was cooked nicely and he said it was tasty. The rye toast was standard bread bag bread. I little disappointing that it wasn't bakery bread there are so many good options for that in this area and it really makes a meal so much better. Overall a solid average meal. I would not rush to go back but if we were around and hungry we would give it another try. read more

A hidden gem of Troy. Seriously, there's no other place I would rather have breakfast in the Capital District than Carol's. To begin, the wait staff is exceptional. Its exactly what you want from a local cafe, they remember you AND your order. Sonya is of course our favorite. Always so friendly and happy to see us. Next is the food, feed your sweet tooth with a delicious waffle, cure your hangover with a breakfast pizza, or quell your "Sunday Scaries" with an incredible omelet. Typical hole in the wall little diner. You have to look for this place to find it. Personally I thought the waitress was rude and the food wasn't fit to feed to my dogs. I ordered the steak and eggs. Yes, I'm aware this isn't a steak house but it tasted old and freezer burnt. I sent it back and was not offered anything in replacement or asked if I wanted to order anything. I ordered delivery from Carol's Place. They initially messed up my order, as I had asked for no butter on my toast (I'm lactose intolerant) and it came buttered. They nicely offered to send replacement toast, but they made sure to burn it first. Why go through the effort of driving back out to me to send me inedible toast?? First visit and I enjoyed the experience. The restaurant has a nice family ambiance and the customer service was friendly. I had a western omelet which came with Homefries and toast. My colleagues and I order from the breakfast menu quite frequently. Their delivery service is always great, especially when interfacing with Grub Hub to place our orders. After getting delivery a dozen or so times, I decided to take my significant other to Carol's Place for lunch. We were blown away by how packed the place was. I knew their food was good, but the atmosphere was incredible and welcoming. What we ended up enduring was awful. It took me 30 minutes after ordering our meal to realize that we were not alone in having an empty table. Looking around the place, I could tell that everyone was fixed on the wait staff trying to figure out where their food was. We were all waiting for our food orders to come out, at which point I realized that I would have to go beyond my normally allotted 60 minute lunch break before we'd be served. Within moments it became clear that the wait staff couldn't keep their calm. I overheard them discussing the issues they encountered in their kitchen; apparently they were short staffed. It made me uncomfortable to see a waitress place blame so easily, instead of being able to at least be accountable for what was happening. Finally food started to come out. It was exciting to watch the wait staff confront their patrons based on what they ordered. One lady sitting next to me was given fruit salad, but said that she had ordered home fries instead. Naturally the waitress pulled out her pad to prove to the customer that she had written down fruit salad instead of home fries. I think she realized how foolish she looked and moments later she took the plate back to the kitchen, only to bring it back out with a side of fruit salad still intact. We wanted to leave, but instead opted to endure more punishment. When our food finally arrived, it was clear that we were in the same standing as the regular customers that were sitting next to us. We had ordered a turkey club, which had three slices of toast without any sign of mayo. I made the mistake of taking a bite into the sandwich without first inspecting it. The roof of my mouth was torn up by the dry slices of toast and again I was forced to wait until a remedy were to arrive in the form of multiple packets of mayo. Our waitress gave us our bill and apologized by taking $5 off. However, this was not enough incentive for a return visit. That being said, I have ordered breakfast delivery several times since our awful experience. As for my lady, I doubt she'll ever want to do business with Carol's Place again. Before leaving, the lady, who was erroneously given fruit salad repeatedly, leaned over and told us that Carol's Place wasn't always so bad. The breakfast pizza is delicious and the regulars are very committed to Carol's Place. I hope you have a better experience than we had. read more

Did I really give this four stars before? I think I probably went back about four more times, mainly because it was a convenient place to meet my father-in-law for Sunday breakfast. They may have had a good opening week, but it's not worth going anymore. The coffee - has not improved. The home fries - are not nearly as good as that first time around. The service - is mainly comprised of teenage girls who manage to screw up at least one thing on someone's order each time we went. The food - meh. I think it just clinched it for me when I looked at the uninspired eggs and terrible coffee and realized that I could produce something far better at home. I called and order pizza to be delivered, and one would think with all the calls a pizzeria gets that the person answering would be a pro on the phone. Not the woman I spoke to. She was rude and had an attitude when I asked if they had any specials on pizza. I didn't realize I was inconveniencing her by asking her a simple question. Anyway...I waited for the pizza to come, I called at 5:51 and the pizza didn't arrive until 7:25........and mind you its a Tuesday night, and all I ordered was a medium pizza and 10 wings, nothing that would justify such a wait. Oh and I live barely a HALF MILE AWAY. The pizza wasn't bad at all, but the service definitely out weighed the taste of the food. Skip this place there's lots of other pizza places in town. Traveled up to Troy for my best friend's 21st birthday weekend and we found ourselves the first morning eating breakfast at Carol's. I cannot stress how envious I am of the people who live around this place and can go whenever they desire. I wish Brooklyn had a cute Mom'n'Pop place like this, because I would go every Sunday. While it doesn't look like much from the outside, you'll notice that it's probably going to be crowded, especially on the weekends. We walked in, picked a two seated high table by the window and had such difficulty picking something because everything on the menu sounds delicious and is extremely affordable. Not only that, but the staff is the definition of perfection. They are kind, patient, and have no issue bringing a hundred things to your table if you ask. I had the breakfast dish, 'The Benny,' with two poached eggs on English muffins, potatoes, and some hot tea with lemon. I was blown away by how delicious the dish was, and by how many people were sitting around enjoying their early morning. That's the thing about small towns; no one is ever in a rush and people treat each other the way human beings should. Coming from the city it's always a shock to see such hospitality and gratitude between people. If you are passing through Albany or Troy, you have to stop at Carol's. The staff is not friendly and walks by without even acknowledging their customers. **And I love how the lady at the pick up window NEVER gives you back the change from your to go order. She just assumes it is her tip! This has happened to me 3 times now, and my coworker just came back from picking up an office lunch order and said that the same thing happened to him! Been going there for years. Hell I even bought a t-shirt and wear it proudly. Great food, homey atmosphere and VERY friendly. At almost every meal Carol (yes THE Carol) comes out to talk to us. I know about her family and she's been feeding mine for almost 15 years. I know her, all her daughters and even her Granddaughter who waits on weekends. The food is fabulous. The only reason I'm not giving em 5 stars is the sometimes limited parking and occasionally the kitchen will go on "walk about" from time to time. On a good day, which is 90% of the time your food comes out in a timely fashion, that other 10% though can have you waiting a half hour or more for your meal. As a fellow server of over 15 years, I am very forgiving and understanding, but the service we received today (and most other times we've been) makes us not want to come back. Our server today (SB) was short, dismissive and rude. We didn't even finish our sentence when we were giving our order and she walked away. I don't go out to eat to get yelled at for being helpful. I don't need a conversation, but a patient hello and a smile goes a very long way. Wanted to finally cater Christmas dinner, saw it got good reviews. My wife called, spoke with woman who answered the phone, heard the girl speak to someone who yelled at her and said "it's not my fault I have no staff, I can't take any orders now!!" (Hindsight's 20-20) my wife explained what we needed for Xmas dinner, lady said they'd cook two things 1/2 way and they'd explain how to cook it day we pick it up. Day came, I drove from Rexford to pick up my Order and asked lady(not kid) how to heat up my food(300$) worth. All she would say was read the instructions on the box. I tried to explain my situation, she said "I told you to read the box"'and left. I was more than frustrated Got home, followed all instructions to a tee and everything was ice cold. Took two more hours to heat everything and when it was served was the most tasteless fare I've ever ordered. Was actually terrible. I wanted to save time and money and stay out of the kitchen, but I ended up spending more time in the kitchen for terrible food than what I would have if I cooked my own. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was with Christmas dinner. It was terrible and the woman behind the counter. Refusing to answer any of my questions. In my opinion, it's the best pizza on this side of the river. I don't know what it is, but their sauce is different than most other sauces that I've tasted on pizza. I have eaten here twice. Once at the counter (not busy) and once in the dining room area (busy that morning). It's amazing how the waitresses can ignore you! They have an unbelievable ability to make you feel invisible. They make you wait for coffee, wait to order, lonnnggg wait for food with no explanation or coffee refill. I watched another patron wait for a simple beverage for far too long. He got disgusted and left. Instead of feeling happy that I came, I start the day happy to leave and try to forget how annoying the whole experience was.
