My husband and I were out in Downtown OP for a friend's birthday and thought we'd stop into Strang Hall for dinner before. We were meeting up at a bar later and both of us were in the mood for something aside from bar food. After making the rounds and taking it all in we landed here, as sushi just sounded incredible for the evening. We shared three rolls between us and the order came out relatively quickly, giving us just enough time to place an order at the bar and find a seat on a busy Saturday night. Honestly we loved the sushi. Everything we had was great. My only critique is just that I always find these food halls to be just a tad bit expensive for self service. I think had we gone to a sit down sushi joint the price would have been approximately the same. But we wouldn't have had to clean off our table from the last diners and source our own silverware etc. Overall I'd for sure eat from Tora Zushi again as the flavors were on point, but if you're looking for a deal this isn't it. read more

My husband and I were down the street having coffee so we decided to walk up to Strang hall and try out a restaurant. We decided on this restaurant because they had some gluten-free options. We both ended up getting the same item which was a fried rice dish with your choice of protein and it had a ginger sauce and was gluten-free. We both ended up choosing shrimp which was an extra two dollars. The ambience of the restaurant is just pretty much a big dining hall where you choose your seating so that can differ, depending on how many people are in the hall. At the time we were there, there wasn't that many people so it was quieter. I feel like the workers that we asked a few questions to were lackluster in their response and when I asked my husband to go back and get an extra serving of the sauce, and my husband asked about it being gluten-free, the guy said he didn't know. Even though on the menu, it states that the dish is gluten-free with that ginger sauce. I did not end up putting that extra sauce on my dish because I was uncertain. I went back on the online menu and it stated that it was gluten-free for the dish. I do not like the menu ordering situation for this restaurant or really any restaurant in the hall. Because we walked up and down looking at the various options on the boards and we decided on that restaurant and they have a scanning QR code right at the counter and then I read it and it said scan here and then go pick a table and order from your table. So I scanned it and we found the restaurant and ordered our meals and then we have to go pick them up at the counter. We also just wanted water so we had to go ask someone about how to just get water. So a person at a counter, explained that there was water in a general area in the dining area. So my husband brought back the bowls and at first I was looking at them thinking this doesn't look like very much food for $18 per bowl. The food was fresh, but they charged two dollars more for shrimp and there was hardly any shrimp in the bowl. It was pretty much all rice. So while the food was fresh and generally good, it wasn't outstanding and it was too expensive for what you get. So I paid with my Apple Pay and when you pay, there's kind of like a button that acts like you need to keep the tab open. We've never been there before so I kept the tab open thinking we needed to do that so they would recognize what table. So then finally after our food came, I closed the tab and then when we were done eating, I went back on the app just to look at other food and then I noticed when I was browsing the app the second time, they said that if you keep the tab open they add 20% tip. Well, I had kept the tab open because it acted like you needed to do it for the order and so a 20% tip was added. I don't think they even deserved considering they did nothing but make our food and we're the ones that went to pick it up and they didn't even take our order. So basically that ended up being slightly over eight dollars for the tip. I think the food at this restaurant is fresh and generally good, but I would not pay extra for the shrimp because they're not good about giving a decent amount. I would stick with another protein that is the normal price which would've made the bowls $16. For the amount that you get in that particular bowl I feel like it should've been more along the $14 range because there wasn't really vegetables in it besides, I think onion and scallion. read more

A rainbow roll comes in 6 pieces, minimal fish, and is 16$. What in the absolute world? I wish I had taken a photo, but I was so shocked that it didn't even come to mind. The fish was sliced so thin, and the roll itself was incredibly small--the size and pieces of a spicy tuna roll. read more

Another KC Restaurant Week find. A signature roll plus gyoza or edamame for $20. I got the Las Vegas roll with gyoza as my starter. The pork dumplings were delicious and so was the roll which came with 2 yummy sauces drizzle across the top. Highly recommend this joint if you're at Strange Hall. read more

I visited Tora Sushi on a very busy Friday night, and the service was pretty good! My order was taken almost right away, and my food was ready in about 15 minutes or so. I ordered the Nikko Fried Rice with pork belly and ungai roll. The fried rice was just okay, it lacked flavor in my opinion. The dish contained ginger sauce, and that's one of the things that helped me to decide on it. Ginger is such a powerful flavor, but I could barely taste it. However, I enjoyed the sushi roll, and wouldn't mind ordering that again if I return. The spot was very clean and all items in sight were stored in an organized manner. read more

I thought the sushi here was very good, but nothing was standout. I would definitely give them another try. I think the reviews comparing it to grocery store or Costco sushi are overly harsh and not a fair comparison. The rolls we had were better than something like that, but Tora wasn't as good in my opinion as something like RA or Kona. We ordered the jalapeno popper roll, rainbow roll, and spicy tuna roll. The jalapeno was not super strong in the jalapeno popper roll, which was a bit disappointing. The spicy tuna roll was my favorite, and I thought it was really well made. The tuna was excellent. The rainbow roll was the most visually appealing of the three, but in terms of taste was somewhere between the disappointment of the jalapeno popper role and the amazing spicy tuna roll. Overall, scratched the sushi itch, and I would go back to try other menu items. read more

I've given Tora Zushi a few times, trying different things, and I really want to give a higher rating but there's been a few disappointments that have been pretty consistent. This last go around, I tried their special-The Cantonese Cuban Sandwich with Fries. I thought the sandwich was excellent. It was char siu pork, Black Forest ham, Swiss, spicy plum remoulade, and Szechwan pickles on a ciabatta roll. The spicy plum remoulade was a nice twist. The pickles were meh and I didn't get any real flavor from them which was surprising. The French fries were outstanding. And probably the best thing that I got this go around. I would absolutely recommend this sandwich and their fries and I would order it again. Now for the not so positive. My partner ordered the pork tender sandwich. This is the second time he's tried this particular dish. The first time he said it was dry and pretty average and he just wasn't impressed. He felt exactly the same way this time. I did try a piece of the tenderloin and while it was dry, I thought it had good flavor. But I probably wouldn't order it myself. Which brings me to the sushi rolls. I love that Strang Hall has a spot that offers sushi, however, I wish it was way better. The first time, I opted for a safe California roll. It was fine. Average. Nothing to write home about. This visit, we decided to get a soft shell crab roll. I posted a pic of what we received. For $16. To me, that's a pretty weak roll. 5 very small pieces. No wasabi. No ginger. Just 5 tiny pieces. I will not be purchasing any more sushi from them. What we received was maybe $12 at the most from other sushi spots. And it wasn't amazing. It wasn't even above average. It was super disappointing. So in conclusion, don't get the sushi, get the fries. read more

Located inside Strang Hall, Tora offers up some great sushi. I opted for a Poke bowl, which was overall wonderful, but I could have gone for a bit more salmon to balance things out a bit. $39 for one roll, and 2 pieces of nigiri is overpriced. I opted for takeout- my Kamikaze roll, I discovered too late, did not include the yuzu sauce in the description, nor did they include soy sauce, so it was pretty flavorless, and not worth the $22.50 that it cost. The nigiri supposedly had uni butter but the uni flavor was undetectable. Fish quality was good, but can be found elsewhere for a much better price. read more

This place is legit delicious. I've had the okonomiyaki, ramen, crab wonton nachos, sushi, and a wagyu burger and everything has been incredible. The okonomiyaki is life-alteringly good. I was really not loving Strang Hall initially, but it feels like they're pulling some real talent now. I so hope this place makes it, because I will def keep coming back. read more

Most restaurants in Strang Hall are upscale but better rolls can be found at supermarkets. Tried three signature rolls. Smaller portions. Main flavor is the sauce. Spicy tuna was the best we tried. Potstickers were served cold inside. Replacements were on par with Costco. read more

The sushi is amazing and fresh-and definitely check out the unique weekly special rolls. I had the wild child roll which is my absolute favorite, the miso sauce is to die for. The dumplings are my son's favorite, he orders them every time and I could drink the sauce! My daughter gets the fried rice also and loves it. My only complaint is that I never know what to order because I love it all! Probably the best sushi around, I haven't even dreamt of getting the subpar grocery sushi, with mushy rice and questionable fish, since frequenting this place. read more
