After a workout I was craving ceviche but didn't feel like making a drive to my favorite spot. So my second craving was fresh sushi. A quick google search and I was at Toro'Ko! Entering the restaurant has a moody ambiance and dimly lit. Perfect for a date night or a romantic lunch for 1 the pricing is standard and ranges from $10 and up. Of course the specialty rolls will be more. The waiter gave wonderful suggestions and was very helpful going over the menu with me. I ordered a miso soup as an appetizer. It was very delicious. I couldn't decide on a roll because they had such wonderful options. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw a ceviche roll! I have never had one before, and it was phenomenal! All the ingredients tasted so fresh perfectly seasoned! They didn't have hot oil there, but they managed to whip some up for me! Great food, amazing selection! Fresh fish, ordered 3 rolls and finished them while licking the plates. They made it into a boat, love the presentation! It isn't your average sushi with basic crab meat or shrimp tempura topped with spicy mayo and eel sauce and everything ends up tasting the same type of sushi place. Based on a friend's recommendation, we tried Toroko on NW Military Hwy. I'm happy to say, we are still friends as Toroko was wonderful! With one of the most comprehensive menus I've seen, Toroko has a roll, nigiri, sashimi, and classic Japanese entree for any palate. Top tier sushi! Probably the FRESHEST sushi rolls I've had in SA thus far. We found this spot by the "Now Open" sign on the corner of the intersection and decided to have lunch & try it out. We have lived in the area for three years and driven by this place, but never stopped. What a miss. We are so glad that we finally decided to stop in and have sushi here. It is amazing. Some of the combinations are just out of this world. You have to try the lemon option, the mamba, the Stone, Oak, and many others. The sushi is fresh and delicious. I visit Toro'Ko fairly often and have always walked away happy and satisfied. This restaurant is my personal favorite in the mid-tier price range and punches well above its weight. The service here is amazing. From the back of kitchen to the sushi chefs and waiters, everyone is always so attentive and on point. Servers are quick to address any questions and concerns. The sushi chefs (usually only 2) are very good at keeping up with orders while maintaining the quality of the orders. The restaurant really functions like a well oiled machine. We noticed signage announcing a new sushi bar in our neighborhood, and ever in search of delicious Japanese fare, elected to visit Toro'Ko sushi. The restaurant is found in a strip center on the corner of NW Military and Huebner Road. The restaurant is sandwiched twixt two other retails, sharing parking, adequate but not expansive parking areas. We were immediately greeted by our waiter, Brian, who explained that this is the second location for Toro'Ko, the other, the original location found in Stone Oak. The restaurant decor can best be described as basic, with wooden tables and chairs, some images on the walls, with the sushi bar facing the entry. The bar proper is smallish in dimension, seating perhaps 5 patrons. There are probably 15 or so tables round the dining area. The ambiance can best be described as somewhat sterile, with little flare for decoration, IMHO. The ceiling is unfinished, with steel rafters and HVAC ducts visible. I mention this, for as the restaurant filled, the sound level was quite elevated with the revelry of the patrons. Perhaps a little sound deadening dashes would be helpful. But the real issue to be addressed is the actual dining experience, right? Well, we began with a filtered, cold sake, the delicious, crisp Ozeki Junmai Daiginjo. Definitely recommend! We began our exploration of the menu with one of our favorites, salmon sashimi. The Toro'Ko offering of five slices is served in a glass goblet, the sashimi surrounded by slices of cuccumber, and grated daikon. The sashimi and vegetables were presented perched above a bed of crushed ice. The presentation was unique and beautiful, and the salmon was creamy, melt in the mouth fresh. Next up, the Flama Roll. This specialty is of salmon, crab, scallops with ponzu and eel sauce. The presentation of this dish was flaming in fact...literally. The dish is brought to the table actually aflame! After the flames were extinguished, this creative presentation led to the mouth watering morsels of the roll. The balance of the sauces beautifully complimented the rolls. Delicious! We finished our dinner with the Stone Oak Roll. This roll was a reprise of salmon, crab and avocado, but this offering with blue fin tuna, and dressed with eel sauce. Again, we found this roll mouthwatering! So our overall impression of Toro'Ko on Military is decidedly positive. The presentation of the items we selected were second to none, and Marjan and I visit a lot of Sushi bars. The freshness and the quality of the the fish, married with the sauces was a culinary delight. (Our waiter informed that fish is delivered at least every two days.) One detractor was the absence of flair with the decor, and the sound level which did make conversation difficult. But Marjan and I were so impressed with the foodstuffs, that we gladly recommend Toro'Ko on Military to the family of Yelpers! Enjoy!! read more
