They are always trying to impress! They had an Aji special on the menu, and we were having a very late lunch so they had time to make this beautiful presentation! It tasted amazing! Great service.

I got a carry out order to try this place out. I showed up 5 minutes after it said it would be ready. However, when I got there, they found the ticket and hadn't made it. I was a bit perturbed since I had to be downtown in 40 minutes and had to drive in rush hour traffic. The people who make the sushi said it would be 5 minutes. I was shocked and said okay. And it was legit 5 minutes! And it was delicious!! They threw in a cucumber salad for the misunderstanding and wait. That is some good service. While I didn't eat at the place, the space was nice for a casual date night out. Nice little lanterns at the tables and space between tables so you have some privacy. It could also be good for lunch.

Based on a friend's recommendation, we tried Toroko on NW Military Hwy. I'm happy to say, we are still friends as Toroko was wonderful! With one of the most comprehensive menus I've seen, Toroko has a roll, nigiri, sashimi, and classic Japanese entree for any palate. The yellowtail was fresh, sweet, and was incorporated perfectly into the TX Roll. The chef was accommodating, and graciously agreed to add extra yellowtail and hold the salmon... great service! I highly recommend... cheers!

My friend Teri is a fan of sushi like I am, so I wanted to introduce her to @toroko.sushi and also check out their new location on NW Military and Huebner. We're celebrating her belated birthday with some girl time. Teri actually chose the Sake Bomb, which was great since she's never had one, but also great to capture on video! She had it with Sapporo and I had it with Kirin Light. She chose the Toro'ko Special Roll, and I chose the sashimi for us. I ordered the Fatty Salmon, Fatty Yellowtail, Escolar, and Ikura nigiri. Loved everything! Perfect amount of food and the food is just as fresh as the Stone Oak location. For dessert, Teri chose the Mochi ice cream in green tea, strawberry, and mango flavors. Tummy full and love language tank was full from quality time. Friendship to cherish indeed! 14510 NW Military Highway Another location is 158 E. Sonterra Blvd.

Top tier sushi! Probably the FRESHEST sushi rolls I've had in SA thus far. We found this spot by the "Now Open" sign on the corner of the intersection and decided to have lunch & try it out. The place is clean, nicely decorated without it seeming overwhelming and chill. We had great service and the waiter also gave us recommendations. We tried the Cancun roll, Lemon Special roll and some chicken fried rice. The Cancun roll is one of my FAVORITE roll of anywhere I've been. It's so lightweight without the rice, you feel like you could eat 5 orders back to back. The flavors are very well balanced. Just the right amount of sauce. A must try! I would not steer you wrong. The Lemon Special is quite fun as well. It comes with a thinly sliced lemon on the top including the rind. Eat it, don't take it apart, it's the journey that adds to the tastes. Lemon zest! You'll love this roll too! Fresh! Fresh Fresh! I've gotta know what genius is back there curating these bomb ass rolls. I've been to a lot of sushi spots, and I've never had anything like the Cancun roll or the Lemon Special. Congratulations to the owners and I hope to see this spot around for years to come cause lawd knows I need that Cancun roll. Can't go wrong!

    Seaweed squid salad

Our first time here. The staff were very nice! The seaweed squid salad was delicious. We also ordered yellowtail nigiri and Toro sashimi, along with ikura nigiri and a roll. The Toro was beautifully presented! My only criticism was that both the toro and yellowtail were mushy. Toro is usually like butter in your mouth and this fish your tongue could mash. I couldn't put my finger on why it would be this way as it tasted okay but was uncertain of the texture.

We are so glad we decided to stop here on a Monday night. We were driving to sushihana when we realized they were closed on Monday so decided to give this place a try and we are so glad we did!! We started off with spicy edamame and miso soup and then ordered the lemon special roll and RS roll. Both were absolutely delicious and fresh!! I can't wait to come back and try different rolls. Nice and quiet place. Service was great...both rolls were recommended by our server and he nailed it!

Loved the colorful roll(middle), spicy tuna roll(top) is different than we're used to but the sesame seeds are a great addition, and completely forgot the name of the bottom roll but it was also delicious with the added jalapeño. Service was quick and server was very friendly. Ambiance is quiet and clean , definitely recommend coming here.

Fast forward almost 3 yrs later and we have found some true sushi gems here. At the top of my list now is Godai after our first visit last night. I saw a post by a local SATX Foodie and even then I had no expectations despite the raving reviews, I always like to try a restaurant and decide for myself. Right when you walk in you're greeted in Japanese which I've always loved because it makes me feel welcome. The aesthetic of the restaurant is very authentic japanese; minimalist with unique touches and details like the hanging round lanterns in the center of the main dining area. The main attraction however, that you can't miss as soon as you walk in is the chef "Korean Cowboy" as he calls himself, working his magic all by himself, carefully and diligently crafting beautiful and delicious sushi. Our server was very nice and attentive. She informed us that it was happy hour and certain drinks and appetizers were half off. We started out order right away. For our appetizers we ordered spicy edamame which was the most unique version I've tried thus far. It had 2 orange slices in the center for flavor and garnish as a chili powder that blended the tangy and spicy flavors and paired perfectly. I loved both the presentation and the taste. We also ordered shishito peppers which were just as tasty. A highlight for me (recently) has been Hamachi Kama (yellowtail collar) I believe it's an uncommon item to order and highly underrated. I learned about it from my husband and anytime we see it on a menu we order it. It was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Next, we ordered our rolls and nigiri. The rolls we ordered were: the sunny roll and the cherry blossom roll. Both were absolutely delicious. You can instantly taste the quality of fish and experience in the craft of sushi when you've eaten enough sushi in your life. My husband is without a doubt a sushi connoisseur, or the "sushi sensei" as I like to call him. So when we agree on loving a restaurant I know we've discovered a new gem! Our entire order was delightful however, for me, what sets restaurants apart is the ones with the best service and quality of food alike. The chef, "Korean Cowboy" came to our table and said he included some Saba (Mackerel) on the house, he was proud of his craft and said he'd like our opinion. To be honest, I had not had Saba in years because in the past it was very very fishy and I did not enjoy it. This Saba was phenomenal (I'm not getting paid to say this) lol. Chef KC explained to us that Saba has to be "dressed" well in order to taste good. It wasn't good, it was GREAT! It was smoky, soft and melted in my mouth dressed perfectly indeed. I think it's safe to say this is by far my new favorite sushi restaurant and my husband concurs. We will definitely be regulars here for as long as we live in TX! Just fyi, they also offer Omakase as well as many other options like Ramen and Korean dishes. Can't wait to taste and experience it all! Enjoy! SYOY!

Could be a nice, intimate place for dinner though we were seated next to a pretty loud group. Service was fast and friendly, which was appreciated. The meal itself was decent, not great. Tried the masago and snow crab off the sushi menu; the former was good, but the latter strangely dry, as if it had sat out a little too long. An appetizer portion of the shrimp and vegetable tempura was very good. Particularly puzzling was the unagi roll. Not only did each piece of the roll fall apart, it was doused with so much eel sauce that it was hard to taste anything else. Looking back on it, I should have sent it back to the kitchen. Of note was the tempura banana dessert, which was a sort of Japanese take on a sundae! Putting crisp, hot chunks of fruit up against sweet vanilla ice cream, sprinkles, and chocolate syrup (not berries as the menu claimed) was...well, interesting. I probably wouldn't order it again, but it is novel. Average it out and it's a decent place, though I would only come again if I was in the area for something else to begin with. This place scores a 3 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing away after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. Would be OK having a nosh here with Mother Mary. 3 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Joseph good. Would be OK having a beer here with Jesus' Dad. 2 out of 5 stars: Come-to-the-Apostles good. Meh. Wouldn't have my last supper here. 1 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Nobody good. I wouldn't have my penultimate supper here, either.

Old Review: If you have an allergy, please read!! I really hate to have to do this for what was one of my favorite go-to restaurants for years and years, but this is extremely disappointing. There were things marked as Gluten Free on the menu that were NOT gluten free. I even asked clarifying questions at least five times, and was still served gluten. Luckily, I could tell right away from experience and went and asked AGAIN. And yes, it has gluten. Ponzu, spicy sauce, and imitation crab almost always have gluten, yet the rolls were marked as gluten free on the menu. I told them the menu needs to be changed or they're going to make someone very sick. The sushi chef told me that the ones marked can be made gluten free, but not with what is shown on the menu and we have to ask for it, but I did do that. Multiple times. And my server confirmed this, she noted it on our order and everything. (Our server was very sweet, no issues with her). If the food is not gluten free and needs adjustments to be so, it should say that. I asked and it seems they're under new ownership now. I just hate that I can't trust this place anymore, they used to be great at explaining the allergens to me and I never had issues before. The menu needs to be updated right now or someone is going to get seriously sick. This is why those of us with allergies ask so many questions and have trouble trusting anything. To Sake Cafe's new owners, please please please do research on allergens and mark your menu accurately and very clearly. I hate to put one star, but people need to know, and things need to change.
