I found Torres Tree Service through Yelp, and was impressed by their number of positive ratings. They also gave me a reasonable estimate for the work and were willing to take payments. This is where my praise ends. When David came out to give me an estimate and we arranged the payments he told me he was sending me a contract, which I could fax or email back to him once I'd signed it. I have neither fax nor scanner and told him I could send it back to him via USPS, but he told me just to have it ready on the day the work was scheduled for. I asked him at least twice if he was sure that would be okay and said I'd have no problem sending it USPS, but he assured me that I just needed to have it signed on the day they came out. I received the contract later that day, printed it out, and thought all was taken care of and I'd see him and his team on the date scheduled. Today was the day they were supposed to do the work, and they didn't show up. After a series of phone calls I came to find out that the work had never been scheduled in their "book". This was initially put down to me missing a confirmation email 10 days ago. I flatly refuted that; the only email I ever received from them was the contract which came 3 weeks ago (the day of the estimate). They them switched reasons and said it was because they never received the signed contract from me. Per my discussion with David at the time of his in-person estimate I believed that all I had to do was have that printed out and ready for them today, and I never received any word from them in the interim that this was not the case. Apparently though, it was. Because they never received the contract from me they assumed that I did not want to have the work done. I did not get either a phone call or email from them trying verifying that; they just assumed. If David had not told me, in-person, that all I needed to do was have the contract printed out and signed for them on the day they arrived I would have sent it to them, but he assured me that that was unnecessary. At this point I was still trying to be understanding. Anybody can make a mistake, and if they were willing to remedy the mistake I wouldn't be writing this review. My city has an absolutely firm date for weed abatement, which is July 2, because of the high fire risk in our area. If I fail to have this tree trimmed by that date I could face fines of $300 or more, which is the reason I called Torres Tree Service 3 weeks ago to schedule this work. I wanted to make sure it was done on time so that I could avoid the fine. If I have to pay the fine, there's simply no way I can afford to have the tree trimmed. All of this was conveyed to the woman I spoke to from TTS today. After she made several phone calls back-and-forth between David and myself she told me that the only available date they could get out here to do the work was July 22 because "they have to respect the people with contracts that they already have". While I can certainly understand that to a degree they also have a contract with me. Again, the ONLY reason they do not have it in their hands is because David told me that all I needed to do was have it printed out and signed when he arrived to trim the tree. Add to that the fact that I never received any type of confirmation email from them (or indeed any communication from them after they sent me the contract), and I'm really failing to see how it's my fault that they didn't show up to do the work today. At a minimum they should reschedule someone else so that they can complete the work they agreed to do for me by July 2. That they did not do this I consider extremely unprofessional at the very least. This has been hugely inconvenient to me and my family. Not only has it disrupted our plans for one day, but it could potentially cost us hundreds of dollars in fines. I got the impression from the women I spoke with several times at TTS today that had I been paying all the money up front they would have done more to remedy the situation. That is disappointing, especially in this economy. So now I'm stuck with a large, looming fine from my city, and trying to do the impossible: find a company that cane get out here and do the work that needs to be done for a reasonable price in a short amount of time. I doubt I will succeed in that, and I will be forced to accept the date of July 22 from TTS and a large fine on top of that from my city. read more

DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE!!!!!!!!!! My mom payed and subpoenaed David Torres to show up in court regarding a tree issue she was having with her home owners association. David did not show up to court and did not call. My mom talked to him on the phone a couple days beforehand and he said he would be there. NO CALL,,,,,NO SHOW!!!!! My mom lost her case. TWO WEEKS later he decides to call and says he wasn't feeling good. And to boot....he said that he understood her frustration because he had just gone through a similar court case and lost. I called him many times while at court and after court( giving him the benefit of the doubt ). The lady who answered the phone could only say she didn't know where he was,,,that maybe he would be in later that night. I would give 0 stars but this isn't an option. I was given their information by a friend who had nothing but positive things to say about the quality of work and value of the services performed. We have a tree in our backyard that has unfortunately been infested with termites. I used Torres online booking system for estimates which was very easy and convenient. I own my own business so carving out a time for this is never easy. The morning of the appointment, I received an email from them confirming my 1:30 appointment. My business is in Brentwood and we live in Sherman Oaks so I made the drive back and was at my home at 1:00. At 2:00 which is 30mins over the appointment time, I gave them a call to inquire about them coming. I didn't get a hold of a person so I left a message asking for someone to call me back about them being late. I waited another 30mins, which is now 1 hour after my scheduled appointment, and emailed them with the same question. At this point, I already knew they would not be showing up. I left to go back to the business at 2:45. Because I am also in the service business, I had to block my schedule so I wouldn't get any appointments. Not only am I very upset that I never received any call or email apologizing for their missed appointment, I lost 3 hours of appointments at my own business. BEWARE!!! - Received quote, signed it, then they showed up to do the job AT THE WRONG TIME, several hours earlier. Tried to charge us a LOT more than original quote and harassed us with late fees for weeks when they are the ones who quoted a different price, IN WRITING. Do not use this tree service, the owner doesn't give a hoot whether he gave a quote or not, he said we still owed the new amount, which is NOT what we were quoted. Can't believe these folks, fighting over a few bucks. What kills me is the unprofessionalism and flat out sorry attitude. NEVER AGAIN. This is my first Yelp post and unfortunately it is not for a positive reason. I called Torres Tree Service business phone number several times and I have never had anyone actually pick up (no matter what time of day). After a week passed I finally decided to call the mobil phone number printed on the business card I have and to my surprise someone picked up! I thought okay well I'll give them another try. I had an appointment scheduled and on the day of my appointment I got a call from Torres Tree Service saying they would not be able to make the appointment time because they were in LA with an inspector. Okay. no problem I rescheduled for the following week (Today). I called Monday morning to confirm my appointment (I called the mobile number and he had the office call me back to confirm) for the following day at 10am. Well 10 am came and went and they no showed! I waited trying to be patient and finally called at 10:45am both the office and the mobile number...surprise surprise NO ONE Answered so I left a voicemail on both numbers. David Torres was professional and polite during the estimate and communication throughout (however talking the talk and walking the walk are 2 different things). His crew did a satisfactory job for the industrial building planters/yard that he was hired to do - but not great or perfect (read below for why). They had to remove a whole bunch of trees, bushes and trim a variety of trees. His quote was reasonable among the other companies I contacted. However, we ended up picking Torres Tree Service due to the high reviews on Yelp and the professionalism he showed during the estimate. Here's the reasons: 1) We were advised to arrive and open up the property for the service early. On the contract it states work will start at 7:30am. So we arrived early at 7:15am to the commercial property and waited and waited. (This is not my residential project, where I can just roll out of bed and open the front door.) When no one showed up, I emailed David. He replied a short sentence, stating his crew will "arrive shortly". Around 9:15am, his crew finally showed up. So 7:30am till 9:15am is "shortly". A simple call or email, saying the time was pushed back would have helped. 2) His crew arrived and they quickly got to work. All was going well and his crew worked quickly. However after about 2 hours, after their break, everything slowed and became half-hearted (half-@ss). Nothing wrong with taking it slower, but I expect the same detail and attention to get the job done. It really shows when one side of the commercial yard/planter was cleared quite well and the other was not cleared as well. We willing to let it go, since most of the crew were pretty much 'tired' but there's more to it. I have to give 1 extra *Star* for his young foreman. He was literally the only person that was trying to take care of the work towards the end. Seems like the other just got 'tired/lazy' and leaving the foreman doing the work. I believe David's brother/relative (family member) was part of the problem. He was basically tell his foreman this wasn't cover or that wasn't covered, so don't do this and that. So most of the other crew just took it easy except for the foreman. However during the estimate, David told me it was all covered and now we have his brother saying otherwise on the spot. Basically they were ready to bounce and wanted to go home - got that feeling just trying to wrap up as soon as possible, whether its done right or not. 3) I emailed David afterward and informed him of a couple issues that popped up. I've copied them below: #1 A tree stump was not removed. Didn't notice it till the service was completed. #2 Part of the barb wire on the gate fence was damaged when falling tree branches fell on top of it. #3 Majority of the debris was hauled away, however left-over tree parts/branches/leaves and cactus was found in trash bin. (Actually it was thrown away by his brother - out of all people!) #4 Some saw dust was left on property, as well as on street and some were in neighbor's property, whom complained to us. #5 Crew constantly spitting while working. While it is a minor, it can be disgusting and unhygienic, especially on other people's property. David was quick to email back and discussed over phone about the points I brought up. He said that he would come out with his crew to fix the issues and get the barb wire fixed. He told me he would email me and set-up a time to come out. When the time came, I had to be the one to follow up because he didn't contact me. He replied that due to LA fire, had to delay it another week and he would follow up with me again. So did he follow up a 2nd time? Nope, I had to email him again and this time he actually replied with a time and date. I confirmed and here's the interesting thing - when the time came, the crew was late again! We were waiting at the property like waiting for a VIP to show up. He did call our office to inform us this time, but we were already there waiting for a bit. This time he sent out his crew of 2 (his brother was one of them) to come out and fix the issues. David was no where in sight (he mentioned earlier he was going to come check out fence). His brother did not say a word and got that pissed/unhappy "why the hell I'm back" look. Did a half-@ss clean on #3 and removed #1. Once they fixed #1, they packed up and left very quickly. So is the fence fixed .... nope (it might not cost an arm and a leg, but whats the point of insurance if not gonna bother fixing the issue?) I believe David is trying and tries hard. I think if he can overcome and fix some issues, his service can improve greatly. Talk the talk, then walk the walk. My recommendation: If you want to use his service - video record your conversation/estimate and take pics of things that are suppose to be trimed/removed, write it very detailed and document it all. Helps if you are there during the service and jump on it right away. read more

I had an appointment on a Monday at 10:30. I got a call at 9:30 requesting to reschedule for Thursday at 9. Fine. Thursday at 9, I called to make sure someone was coming. I was told that they needed to reschedule to Saturday at noon. On Saturday, I called at 12:30 when no one showed up. They told me that they were running late. It's now past 4. No one showed up. No one called to explain. They blew off 3 appointments. Completely unprofessional. Do not use this company. read more

I had a great experience a year ago so I set up an appointment this past fall. They never showed, never called, and never returned my calls. I gave them another chance this spring and they went MIA again. I was surprised someone returned my messages after my fall experience. Darlene apologized, offered to reschedule, and offered a 5% discount - or $7. For the two hours they wasted this spring, it's apparent they believe my time is worth $3.50 an hour. I have also given this company high ratings before. I have used them twice before. The first time, in 2012, was excellent. The second, in 2013, was pretty good. But my most recent experience was terrible and ultimately led to tragedy when the workers left the side gate of my yard open without telling me, and they let my dog out. Back when they were a small company, you would call and get a real person on the phone. Now you have to make an appointment on line and are contacted via email. David showed up at my house a half hour early with no early warning. Fortunately I had gotten home from work in time to meet him. Unlike other reviewers, they hadn't told me "approximately." I needed a Pomegranate tree trimmed so I could spray it and I was very specific about what I needed. He also looked at my tangerine and asked if I wanted that trimmed. I said no thank you (still loaded with fruit). The price was good, as it always is, and I made an appointment for them to come on Saturday. As it was, I already had to wait a week for them to come out, and in the meantime my tree was leafing quickly! Saturday morning I got a phone call from the office manager that the entire crew had gotten food poisoning and wouldn't be able to come out. I said I had to have it trimmed before Wednesday and she assured me that David would call me to make another appointment. Monday evening David called and said they could come at 7:30 on Tuesday morning (not "approximately.") and this is where my story gets worse. They arrived at 7:00am and thank goodness I was already dressed. No warning that they would be here a half hour early. The foreman for the job came around back with his two helpers, looked at my pomegranate and asked me what I needed done. At this point I should have sent them home, but my experience has always been good, so I trusted them. I told him I needed it pruned and all the dead fruit removed, that I was having it sprayed for fungus on Wednesday. He looked at me and asked me how I wanted it pruned. I looked at him incredulously, said they were the experts and I didn't know anything about how to prune a tree (not completely true, but...) And then I went in and called David., who didn't answer his phone, but the office manager called me back reassuring me that they did, in fact, know what they were doing. I don't know what I was thinking that I didn't send them away at this point either, but I try to hope for the best. I asked the foreman how long he had been with the company and he said many years, and I know they have done a good job before, so I trusted him. My bad. Long story a tiny bit shorter, they pruned the tree, poorly (according to the company that came to spray), left dead fruit on the tree even after I pointed it out several times, didn't move the garden swing back to where it started, asked me about 12 times if I wanted the tangerine pruned also (David had written this up in the quote even though I told him I didn't want it pruned), and I didn't know until they told me they were finished, that they had let my dog out. My bad. I asked about the dog, and they looked at me blankly. I paid them then went out in search of my poor Spencer, who I soon found on a strip of grass next to the street around the corner of my cul-de-sac. Someone must have hit him and placed him there for me to find. There wasn't a scratch on him, and he was still warm to the touch, but he was already gone. Unfortunately, this is a very true story and it is only now, almost three weeks later, that I can even write about it. In my list of regrets, not sending Torres Tree Service away the moment they looked at my tree in puzzlement and asked several different times how I wanted it pruned is way up there. Not sure how this company got such good reviews because they are not reliable. I scheduled my appointment with their online system, then they called me 2 hours before my appointment to say they could not locate Foothill Ranch so they canceled my appointment....Then, they ask me if they could change the appointment to a later time because the arborist was stuck in LA; sounded fishy but I said okay. Changed my plans so I could accommodate them for a later schedule then they never showed up or called. Called them to ask what happened then they told me the arborist was stuck at home with a fever; confused at this point because they said he was stuck in LA at a job. They apologized and said the owner himself will come to my house on Sunday and give me a 5% discount. Sunday arrives and they send me an email that says the arborist still has a fever so they have to cancel my appointment.... whatever happened to the owner coming himself. read more

Let me start by saying I am very critical of contractors and often end up disappointed in their final product. This is absolutely not the case here. The facts by the numbers: 1. David Torres ON TIME for consultation. 2. I needed a tree cut immediately, which Torres did for no extra trip charge two weeks before the scheduled trim job to accommodate a construction project at my house. 3. Arrived ON TIME the day of the job. 4. Polite, professional, skilled. One of the guys saw my wife carrying groceries, dropped what he was doing and helped her bring them in. 5. David called me the next day to check on the job, point out they missed a tree and would be returning to finish up.......And, oh by the way, "we are sending you a little gift card with your receipt for payment." 6. The price was fair and they honored the 5% yelp discount without a blink. 7. They did miss a small trim job, BUT there were tons of trees to trim and one missed tree is still an "A" in my book. Especially when they call the next day. (Readers can assume Torres did follow up appropriately if there is not a secondary post by me here.) I will recommend them to friends and family without hesitation. David, these are strange times. Torres Tree Service did some work for me a few years ago. I am not sure what has gone wrong in those years, but this time around it was TRULY a horrible experience. They can't seem to ever pick up their phone, return phone calls, communicate at all about the work they will be doing, or, most importantly show up to their appointments with their customers. I could bore you with the full story of how they let me down, dropped the ball on their window to show up at my house, etc, but I will spare you. Even though their quotes are low, I will be moving on to a different tree trimming service. It's not worth the headache. I WILL NEVER USE THIS COMPANY AGAIN. It saddens me to have to write this review. I have used Torres Tree Service several times over the past few years and have referred them to family and neighbors for their past outstanding work. I tried calling them several times to schedule an estimate and only was able to leave a message on the voice mail. I finally scheduled an estimate via the website and was called one hour before the appointment to reschedule for later in the same day. David never showed for that rescheduled appointment. I tried calling several times and sent an email but did not get a response until the next day. They scheduled another appointment for the next day but called to reschedule. They then tried to reschedule that rescheduled appointment each time using a different excuse. I declined rescheduling with them and quickly found an responsive tree service (A. Cabral Tree Service). I do not know what has happened with Torres Tree Service. I hope they are able to get things straightened out because they were my go-to tree service but no longer. read more

I had a 20' palm that was infested with termites and needed to come out. It was within 5' of our house and 10' from the neighbors, so it was a tough job. Had landscaping all around it. Torres people were very professional and I was able to get a quote via email, as well as a commitment on their schedule to do the work. They did the work within 4 days of signing the proposal and faxing it over to them. I prefer to arrange services like this over email/internet. They made it vrey easy. The work was very professional - they took care not to harm our landscaping or trample the grass. The tree was out in less than 1 hour. Payment was simple and on the spot. Not reliable company. I scheduled a time to get an estimate from David and he didn't show. I called the office they said sorry and let's reschedule. A second appointment was scheduled. I stayed home from work again. And he didn't show again. I called and called, no answer and then got a text "can't talk now, call later". Not happy with this company for wasting my time. read more

Have used this service twice before and was about to work with them again for the third time. As previous reviewers stated, they are incredibly flaky and both David and Darlene will lie to you about their reasons for missed consultations, last minute work schedule changes, etc. Actual work is ok if you babysit the crew, who during one service made flirtatious remarks about me in Spanish, apparently thinking I would not understand. If you value your safety, especially when dealing with people around your property and home, you don't want to risk giving your business to a company whose employees display such a blatant lack of professionalism. On two occasions David promised he would be at the location the day of the job and flaked on that, too. When dealing with him don't ever count on him actually showing up, because 80% of the time he does not. Before canceling my last service with them, I mentioned my concerns to David Torres and he did not respond to them; he clearly does not care about retaining clientele. I'm not sure how they are staying in business but I personally will not be using them again. Like other former clients of theirs, I'm SO willing to pay several hundred dollars more for reliable, trustworthy, respectful service. read more

We (sadly) had to take down a 60-year old Chinese elm. It was hollowed out and dying and it was huge. David Torres gave me the best estimate of four that I got. And he came in at less than half of what the others were quoting. The crew worked for 12 hours, into the evening, braving the reason the tree was hollowed (a huge bees nest), removing the stump and cleaning up afterwards. And they trimmed two other smaller trees and planted a couple of new ones for us, no extra charge. Unbelievable! And so hard-working, professional and reasonable. Being new in the area, I had no idea what company to use to trim and cut some trees in my backyard. I had 4 queen palm trees to trim and 2 birds of paradise trees to cut down. I first made an appointment to receive a free quote for the service. Appointments can be made easily online, which I find to be convenient. The company arrived right on time. They had business cards on hand and paperwork stating all of my information. They were able to give me my quote on the spot, which was also written down on the paper. There was no pressure to agree to service on the spot. I called a few days later to confirm the service I wanted. The whole process was very smooth. Several secretaries will call to confirm everything throughout the whole process. The day of my service, they came right on time. Everything took about an hour. Everything was cleaned up off the floor. I'd have to say this is one of the more professional companies I've dealt with in terms of services for your home. They are all friendly and willing to answer any questions you have. I will definitely use them again in the future. read more

Much email back and forth - all my fault - and then Darlene called me (the old fashioned way!) and said the crew were in my area. I had to leave, but pointed out the Evil Poisonous Oleader, and when I came home, they'd gone and there was no sign the tree had ever been there (it was on a hill and there's a ton of gravel, but I'm sure I'll find the hole eventually!). Clean up was great - especially important because I have a 15 week old puppy that will eat anything - and Darlene called me for a credit card number shortly afterwards. Professional, reliable, they did what they said they'd do when they said they'd do it, and there is a slightly greater chance that my pup will live to see his first birthday.... Torres tree Service just completed a big trimming and removal job and had done another job for us within the last 6-8 months. Both jobs were handled in an exemplary manner. It is a family company headed by Mr. Pedro Torres (Senior) while the estimating and organizing is done by David Torres. The same crew was on hand both times. The scope of the jobs included removal of large old and very tall potentially precarious eucalyptus and other trees, stump grinding, and significant pruning of assorted types and sizes of trees. David is the estimator who determines the scope of the job and presents the written proposal and contract. He also provided evidence of insurance, which is very important in a potentially dangerous activity. He has always been attentive and professional. The crew is efficient with Sr. very hands on, doing much of the heavy cutting and grinding. Jonathan who doesn't quit each tree until accepted and approved artfully performs the pruning. Two brothers do the complementary labor and cleaning with all going into the truck grinder. It is a smooth operation that got the jobs done to my satisfaction. Their bids were very competitive, too. Darlene took both appointments and after the first no-show, she was very apologetic. During the second no-show, I called twice to reconfirm. During the last call I was told I'd receive a call back. I never did, I waited at the property for an hour. My commute to my rental property is 30 minutes, with drive times and waiting times, I wasted over 3.5 hours. Long and the short...Hired them to do a job and while doing it they set their hot trimmers down on our synthetic grass and melted it. Came, saw the damage, acknowledged their fault and told us they would reimburse for repairs to our lawn. You know the end to this story...months later and we can't get any sort of response from them let alone get paid back the $250 it cost us to repair their damage. Was hoping a negative review might help resolve my dispute with them, but judging by the fact that they pretty much have nothing but negative reviews I'm guessing not. They woke up the neighborhood at 7:00 a.m. with chainsaws and woodchippers on a Saturday morning. They would not wait one hour for the legal 8:00 a.m. ordinance. The main office was called and did nothing so then the police came out. They are rude and inconsiderate at the office. I would never use this company. read more

Not professional, not reliable! They gave me an appointment to give me a quote, but when I called back 2 days later, they don't have it in their book. Then, since I insisted to have the job done the next day, they asked me to send pictures of the palm trees so they can give me an instant quote. I sent, and waited ...and waited... no response, I called back, they said they will get back to me ... The next day (the day I need it to get done), they called me at 1pm saying they would come give me a quote and trim it at the same time. Huh? So they can charge me whatever they want? Hell no! I didn't sit there and wait for them desperately, I already found someone with better service and professionalism. Don't use them!! read more

I was concerned about using this company to remove my caterpillar-infested tree because of the reviews I read about no-shows, delays, etc. However, happy to say that they showed up right on time and was very professional from start to finish. More importantly, they are very affordable! I would use them again in a heartbeat! read more

David and his crew did a wonderful job. I had him remove a pretty sturdy sycamore tree that was in bad condition, trim two palm trees, and treat an orange tree all for a reasonable price. He provided a free estimate the day after I called. The workers were on time, respectable and cleaned up after they were done. I will only use David and his crew for further tree care needs. He is also very knowledgeable about the different varieties of trees and how to care for them. read more

Torres tree service has been great to work with. They were very professional, quick, and great customer service. I was very pleased having them complete our job, they showed up on time, had professional workers and were great about their follow up after the job was done. A great company like this is hard to come across. I really felt they were trying to do a great job and not just making money! I would definitely use them again and recommend them! read more
