We were in the neighborhood and happened to see this small Mexican place Tortas Locas. The exterior and interior might be dated but trust me its the food that will wake up your taste buds! We wanted to get a healthy mix, so we tried the Tortas Choriqueso Torta, the Tinga Quesadilla, and the Huitlacoche Quesadilla. It took about 10 min to get our order. First impressions were bold flavor, authentic and attention to detail The Choriqueso Torta was hearty and packed with savory goodness of chorizo, while the Tinga Quesadilla delivered the perfect blend of smoky and spicy chicken. The Huitlacoche Quesadilla was a super unique earthy delight that's a must-try for adventurous eaters. It has a slight balsamic flavor. It is edible fungus that grows on corn. To spice up your experience, try their red and green sauces. We got the fresh made green sauce that was still warm when it arrived and boy was it jalapeno forward. The real heat and flavor took everything to the next level. Service was excellent--friendly and attentive--but the prices felt a bit on the higher side. That said, the quality of the food and experience still makes it worth a visit. Everything was good with the order except the 3 tortas locas... i am not sure if they rushed to finish the order or if they didn't have enough ingredients but in the pictures shows what I received. Truly disappointed!!! Keep in mind I've ordered tortas here all the time during the day time and all have been delicious. Update! Dear god... how did I not know about this place?! Came here randomly with a friend before seeing a show down the street. I had the Toluqueña Torta and let me tell you, l've been wanting to go back ever since. The Torta was huge and freaking delicious. I ate the whole damn thing. Tortas Locas is a fun stop for Mexican food enthusiasts. I wish it was closer to my house! They specialize in DF style tortas, which is to say Districto Federal - aka Mexico City - sandwiches. In these tortas the meat is fried - a gut busting decadence I appreciate. Reasonably priced for such large sandwiches; combo tortas are $8 to 10. I tend to eat a "sencillas torta", which is to say a more simple torta of fried steak ($7), but sometimes I cannot resist the Loca Torta which has steak, pork leg, chorizo and a hot dog! Other menu items are fine, but not the best in town. The prices are competitive. A 5 tacos platter is $8. Kids menu is a steal with items $4 and under. Quesadillas less than $5. One big letdown though: the horchata is not very good. The small space is clean with seats for about 30 people. It has a very casual, picnic feel to it - good for a quick lunch or dinner. Was going to go to the Pho place 2 doors down when I saw this place and decided I really wanted a torta for lunch! Quickly read previous yelp reviews and decided on La Crazy Torta. The guy at the cash register (also the cook) was really nice and quickly took my order and started it. There was only 1 person in front of me but my 1 Torta still took 21 minutes to get...... The torta was HUGE!! enough to easily feed for 3 people (for $11). It was good but not great....the girls however really liked them (they loved the egg....) Nestled in a little shop on South Tacoma Way, Tortas Locas is the 4th store of its kind to open (others in Burien, Seattle, and Renton). Sidewalk signs boast big mexican sandwiches, their chef uniformed frog adorns the window, and once you step inside large menus list most of their options in both Spanish and English. Now, as the name indicates, their signature tortas are crazy. I decided that if there's been a time to get loco since last year's Four Loko ban, this is it. I ordered the CRAZIEST OF THE CRAZY TORTAS. This fellow is combination torta #2, the priciest item on the menu ($10) and has two names depending on which language you speak: La Crazy Torta in english or Torta La Crazy in espagnol. No matter how it's said, I have the feeling you get the idea... this thing is crazy! A quick wait and this monster was brought to my table. I don't use the term monster in jest... the sandwich was bigger than my face... and I have a remarkably big head. Look inside and it's a veritable fiesta of meat. Two different animals, five meat varietals (breaded steak, chorizo, ham, pork leg, and pork head cheese), two cheeses (mozzarella and "mexican") and an egg and avocado thrown on top in case all the rest wasn't enough for you. I finished half and am still full while writing this review seven hours later. I also picked up an horchata while I was there. My family came here randomly when we were hungry one afternoon. It was pretty busy/packed as it is small inside. It was our first time and we ordered to eat inside, but realized that there was only one highchair and it was being used. We decided to take it Togo. We ordered a breakfast torta, tacos, minced meat quesadilla, and tostadas. The torta was okay, but the bread got soggy by the time we came home. Same for the tostadas. The tacos were definitely the best out of everything. We will probably be back again, but only for tacos. read more

Large selection to choose from. I had the Hawaiiana Torta. Comes with ham, pineapple, avocado, onions, mayonnaise. Pineapple wasn't grilled or anything, just looked like it was from a can. Very small amount of all the other contents too. Overall, it was "meh, okay." Wasn't very crowded when I came in, but there were people eating there and taking some to go. The first couple times we've visited I tried different tortas. I prefer the simple carne asada torta out of the 3 different ones' I've tried. But what has got me going back is the tostadas de tinga, tacos suaderos, and my favorite out of their menu is their tinga quesadilla. The quesadilla is not the typical you'd find in most mexican restaurants(ie tacos trucks/taquerias). It's a huge corn tortilla (i prefer corn which is a plus) and comes stuffed with mexican cheese (not mozzarella like most places use), and their flavorful shredded chicken (which isn't just shredded chicken). Their shredded chicken actually is full of flavor. I also would recommend the tostadas de tinga which is the same chicken they use on their quesadillas but is prepared on a hard-shell corn tortilla and layered with chicken, lettuce, quesillo (mex cheese), and topped with sour cream. I would order 2 tostadas or go for 3 if you're really hungry. My last visit consisted of a quesadilla, three tacos suaderos (pork tacos), and one tostada and I left very happy. You can say I had a big appetite that day. read more

I had had my eye on this place for quite some time. Tortas can be hit or miss in a lot of homestyle tiny Mexican restaurants. This was a hit but not a homer. I ordered the fried chicken Milenesa sandwich. Nice hot fried cutlet with beans, sour cream, lettuce, etc. It wasn't an exceptional sandwich with piled high toppings, but it was good and it was large. I'm glad! Because it came to 9 bucks! They split it in two for me and wrapped it up carefully. The bread was grilled and hot. They have a huge menu and lots of choices (see photos). I'd try it again and get something different next time. They give you two salsas, which is more than adequate. A red one and green one. I only took the red one because he said it was milder, but I didn't care for it because I don't like smokey salsas. It was representative good red sauce. Next time I'll take the green one made from tomatillos and green peppers and try something a bit more spicy meat-wise. Overall, I'll be back for another torta when I'm feeling it. The place is kind of a hole in the wall, too. read more

I don't know why I'm seeing some three-star reviews on here, because this place deserves five stars. I would give it ten out of five if I could. Their food is fresh and flavorful, and the service is amazing. The staff is extremely hard working and very, very kind. I ordered two intestine tacos and three asada tacos. The manager insisted on bringing us an extra taco, with chorizo and asada, on the house, just so we could try it (it was fantastic). How incredibly nice is that?! Amazing service! I'd have to say the the intestine tacos were my favorite; the intestine was tender and chewy, and full of flavor. But all of it was completely perfect. My fiancé ordered a pork leg torta, and I was in love with that too - the bun was perfectly crispy, the meat was tender, and the cilantro, onions and avocado were all fresh. Great prices - I got five tacos for about ten bucks, which means that each taco amounted to two bucks. Unbeatable. We were really happy to find this place. Definitely going to come back!!! read more

This place has potential it just needs to fix a couple of issues. First the prices are good for the size of the portion you get, the downside is that although those portions are generous they are missing flavor. The carne asada lacks flavor and the tortas are greasy. The food in general needs an infusion of better taste. The salsas are also not great. My other gripe is that they take way too long to prepare the food. I've been here 3 times with different parties. And each time they took forever to make our order. The last time it was just two of us with two orders and it took them 45 mins to get our orders ready. Once they fix those issues then I would change my rating but for now 2 stars is all I can give them. read more

I've seen this place multiple times I finally broke down and went in. With a name like tortas locals I either expected huge tortas or awesome tasting ones. I think they are average tortas but as seen in my picture it lacked onions and advacados. Not a place I'll probably come back to. read more

I went here on a lark a few months back. It was a rainy Tacompton day, something about the unassuming face of this place made me think hidden gem...or botulism. I'm glad to report I survived just fine, and discovered one heck of a good sandwich. As I said, rainy afternoon, adventurous attitude, I tried the Cubana Torta on my first visit. I liked the sandwich, and it's layers of steak, sausage, pork leg, ham, churiso, and cheese went well between the large, fluffy rounds of bread. However, somehow I felt all the flavors overloaded the sandwich and nothing really stood out. I enjoyed the sandwich, but not with as much enthusiasm as I had hoped. My second visit, on another rainy afternoon, I went for the simpler Toluquena Torta, and I'm glad I did. It came quickly, and was just as advertised. A layer of pork leg, some melty mozzarella, and a sprinkling of spicy churizo, plus a few delicious slices of avocado to help round out the deliciousness between the buns. It was on my second visit that I fell for the sauces. The staff (very helpful and kind I might add) was thoughtful enough to bring me a cup of fresh-made green pepper sauce. Normally dispensed from squeeze bottles, cold, this was a fresh batch and still warm. YUM! If you happen in at the right time I recommend asking for it hot. It has a bit more of a spicy kick when it's hot, and the freshness is undeniably delicious. I'm also a fan of the red sauce, which had a chipotle flavor to it, and went well with the sandwich as well. (I ate the second half of my sandwich with a mix of both...indulgent? This place is great! I absolutely loved it. I'm from Arizona and am used to that level of authenticity in my Mexican food and it's really hard to come by in this part of the country. Tortas Locas is one of the few places in the Tacoma area that serves Tripas and so far the only one that I've found that makes them right. My experience... the longest wait for the most expensive and worst Torta of my life. I love tortas. So When I arrived with high hopes and saw only one other customer table waiting for food I told myself that maybe everyone in Tacoma who was at that moment eating lunch at a more tried and true eatery establishment didn't know what they were missing. I ordered right away taking note of the high price for such a simple sandwich but being hungry and really wanting to give this place a shot. TL boasts having interesting and novel recipes for their Tortas. So I ordered their signature Torta Locas assuming it to be their pride and joy. Then I waited... And waited... About 15 minutes. The Torta arrived - huge! - filling its little red basket. I thought "is it possible that this was worth the $10 and 15 minute wait?" But alas, the bread was super dry almost as dry as the meat. There was a small slice of avocado, a tasteless tomato. And as the finishing blow there was some kind of unsavory sausage link sliced down the middle turning this overly priced unpunctual Torta into a culinary abomination. I'll never love again. Well I finally paid this place a visit after passing by it for at least six months maybe more. They have a wide range of menu options for Tortas. I chose the Asada. While looking around inside they were clean and organized and had a high tech register. They also had a fridge full of bottled soft drinks. Pooch pure sugar in my Coke. The food came out quick and the portions looked large. Friendly service and quality ingredients. The only down side was Where's The Beef? The steal bits and I mean bits were tiny. I'm used to healthy portions of sliced steak on my Asada Tortas. If they start getting more generous in the beef I would hive them another star and my repeat business. read more

A friend had been wanting to go for a while, and I'm always up to try new places. The location was fair, the store front nice, but the inside was poorly arranged and felt cluttered. The menu board, while being conveniently in English and Spanish, was so shoved together, it was hard to see what they had, and probably could have been done better on a laminated, one sheet menu, with each language on either side. The selections were a bit limited. If you like lots of pork, this is a great place for you, since they had lots of variations of the same thing. We ordered: She got the chicharone quesadilla and Ham/Pinapple torta, while I went for a traditional Carne asada torta with a mushroom quesadilla. Here's the fun part. You can order a quesadilla...but the cheese is extra. That's right kids, a Quesa (cheese) dilla (tortilla) that you have to pay extra to get cheese in. Without the cheese, it's basically a huge Taco. Even the clerk gave me the "I just work here" shrug, and I paid for my cheese like an adult. The food is mediocre, on the greasy side, and not all that impressive, the soda machine wasn't kept up....I went for orange soda, and it was only soda water...I did ask if the orange cost extra ;) , and both our seats were dirty and sticky for reasons I would rather not know about. If it were a Mom and Pop place, I would probably let it slide, but this is a chain. Don't spend money in a chain that isn't that great, when you can find little places with amazing food elsewhere. The first time I have ever experienced FALSE ADVERTISEMENT. Both the wall and paper menus show the price of #16 as $6.49, so about $7.25 after tax. When I went to sign the receipt it was a total of $8.75. She claimed it was extra for cheese but I never asked nor did she ask if I would like to add anything. After refunding the charge and re ringing it they still wanted $8.20. She refused to sell it to me at the advertised price because the computer said differently.
