I was referred to Tortoise & Hare Sports by a friend. I really appreciated how my Sales Clerk, Eben, helped me in finding a new pair of shoes. We discussed my feet issues. I got my feet measured/fitted for shoes. I tried on two different brands, the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 and the Hoka Graviota 6. I have extremely flat feet and so I need wide shoes. I had such a hard time deciding that I splurged and bought both of them. I also got a Runpro insole insert which is for comfort & support. This way I can alternate shoes: wear one pair one day and switch to the other pair for the next day. I'm so glad I went there for new shoes. I really needed the new shoes! As you get older your needs change in what you need to have good supporting tennis shoes for walking and exercising. This will be my new store for buying tennis shoes. read more

I have a friend with special needs. She cannot go into a store because of her medical issues. The GM, Bree, set up a special appointment for my friend and hour BEFORE the store opened and she met us in a shaded area beside her store. She set up chairs for us and then she brought out her measuring devices to find what shoe size and style were best for my friend. THEN Bree brought out several pairs for her to try. She let my friend walk around in the shoes to make sure they felt right and accommodated her needs. I have not enough words to express our gratitude for the extreme effort Bree went to in order to assist my friend in buying the best shoes for her. This was my first time getting fitted for shoes. Freddy fitted me into the brooks adrenaline gts shoe after trying on a couple different pairs. He looked at the way I walked in each shoe and listened to all my comments about each shoe. I told him I was looking for a shoe that would work for cross training at orange theory, so some running and some lifting. After recently having surgery and now starting to walk again, having mobility problems and not being stable on another pair of shoes, I stopped by to get a good pair of shoes. Freddy fitted me and found a pair of shoes that worked; I was thrilled to be able to walk with more stability and less pain. Freddie looked and said he didn't think that that was the right pair. Would I try another? I assured him that they felt pretty good, but yes, I would check out another pair. This man knows his job and it's amazing the way that they can read feet! I don't know what kind of training you put your sales people through, but they know our feet better than we do! He brought out another pair and it was absolutely incredible! Dismayed the due to my shoe size and width, I was stuck with a less colorful option... and Freddie did find one with a little bit more color in it. I also started to buy a new pair of slides and he stopped me showing me that they were the wrong size. I had grabbed the same size I've always worn and he convinced me to try on the new size. He was absolutely correct there as well. Freddie had also brought out a pair of socks as I was trying on shoes, which were also incredible! Having had the surgeries that I've had something such as a sock can make a big difference in someone's day, lol. It sounds crazy, but not having to pull your sock out of your shoe from under your foot all day long is wonderful! Mine with a bunch of under me and I was always having to pull it out and back up over my heel. These socks are a little spendy, but they are worth every penny to me. In delight I picked out many more pairs; I had purchased them before previously and also tried the cheaper ones found on Amazon and they are NOT the same. Having the daughters with me and knowing that we all have foot issues and pain I had them fitted as well. Sure enough with Isabella and Kristen's help, they also found the perfect shoe; one needing an orthotic and the other delighted to get a pair if non slip shoes with great support for work as well!! I have flat feet and painful neuropathy. A few days ago on the advice of my PCP I visited Tortoise and Hare Sports. I was greeted by Trace, ushered over to a plush sofa and once I was settled in Trace sat on the floor in front of me. I was pleasantly surprised and really not prepared for this kind of service. He put me through a series of test, including an analysis of my gait, a thermal map of my bare feet and an interview regarding my walking style and activities. Then he disappeared and returned with pairs of shoes, all calculated to be a best fit. None of them did - not surprising as I have not had shoes that fit for the past 20 years or so. Trace, regretfully, told me that he didn't have anything for me. And then he remembered one last pair. Compared to the others, that pair did fit. And I bought them. But the last pair I bought fell apart after about three months, and when I called to ask about the warranty, they said that because they were a reseller, they do not honor Hoka's warranty. Went in to buy a new pair of walking shoes. The guy I worked with really took his time trying to figure out what shoe would fit me best. No pressure to buy and no pushy sales tactics. They just run some tests, ask questions and try to get you what you need. I've had painful foot issues in the past and needed an upgrade from my standard ASICS. I chose NewBalance and also bought an ugly pair of black sandals they suggested on my way out. These are strictly worn at home but feel like I'm walking on a cloud. Devon, wow my man! What a great experience, 6 stars if I could. Came in tonight to get my son some track shoes for upcoming track season. They took so much time with us to record how he walks, ask a ton of questions and ensure he gets the RIGHT shoe. He was able to educate us on trainers and how to really purchase the right shoe. We felt bad because it got really busy and they were already closing. The entire staff was helpful and friendly. You never felt rushed, in fact they continued to reinsure us they are not worried that they were there late. Purchased a pair of shoes and inserts based on the recommendation of the sales lady. $160. 4 months later, the shoes are breaking down and causing feet to turn in on ankle. Went to the store and was told that is because the shoes are breaking down. Normally only last about 4 months. Never would have paid over $100 for what was advertised as "upscale" tennis shoes to only last 4 mos. Hoka shoes have a better reputation, which is what we were told upon purchase. No refund or customer satisfaction offered. Just was offered a 20% discount if we bought another pair. Cannot recommend this Tortoise and Hare store. read more

Do you have foot or plantar fasciitis problems? This place has solutions! They can custom fit shoes and provide other inserts and or orthotics to help alleviate your pain. The one-on-one service and attention was pretty awesome. I walked out of there with a much lighter wallet but the pain of the price will be worth it. I got an awesome pair of New Balance ultralight shoes and a trigger point Impact percussion massage gun. It was the massage gun that was a $200 impulse buy but when applied to my tight and hurting calf muscle it felt like I was in heaven for a few minutes, so I had to get it . Heck, I'd even seen them advertised on instagram a lot. Oh, and there was this vibrating trigger point ball (forgot the name of it) too that felt great on hurting muscles too for about $70 that I considered until I saw the massage gun. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and I loved Deserae and Kristin. They both were fantastic. I know with my year long battle with plantar fasciitis I'll need to get new shoes on a somewhat regular basis and I will be back for sure. read more

What an awesome store with cool people working and running it (pun intended) My boyfriend has been a regular at this running store for years now, so I was anxious to see what his excitement was all about. I am an avid runner and in my neighborhood have my own stores I've been loyal to in the past. When we walked in we were greeted by everyone, including the owner who is unbelievably nice, knowledgeable, and energetic. The team of employees knew their stuff and were ready to assist us with anything we needed. The store itself is very cool and has just about any running outfit, shoe, or accessory you could want. It isn't cheap, but then again no one should run in cheap gear if you value your body. They also host fun races and events throughout the year that get people involved and pumped about running! We ended up walking away with new shoes and a restored eagerness to his the pavement. Outstanding experience! Will absolutely refer Tortoise and Hare Sports and return for my next pair of shoes. Explained I was referred by physician after identifying minor tear in spinal column and degenerative disc's in L4-L5. I needed extra cushion and support for my back to continue remaining active as I transitioned from distance running to walking. Also explained had orthotic inserts for my shoes from a podiatrist due to a toe injury I had in 2020. Jesse and his assistant were very attentive, understanding of the guidelines and explained what they were observing through videoing my walking gate and measuring my standing pressure points. When reviewing how my arch dropped at foot strike we even discussed the bone spurs I have under the ankle. I appreciated Jesse's awareness of the shoe products as he immediately pinpointed I was wearing Ultras which mimic a natural foot strike and have a roomier boxed toe design. We discussed if this was a requirement when determining my next pair of shoes especially since I was wearing inserts. I appreciated that even though I'd determined the HOKAS I'd tried on were a great fit, Jesse brought a pair of Ultras for me to compare against. This reaffirmed my decision and eliminated any room for doubt in changing shoes. Today I did my first distance walk in my new HOKA 6s and my back, hips, knees, feet felt great! This has been a very long process of recovery and I am extremely grateful that your team took the time to listen to my concerns, review all the necessary information needed to make the best choice for me, and I did not feel pressured in any way to purchase more than I came in to buy. What isn't amazing about this place. It is a completely different kind of shoe shopping from the experiences in the mall. It is all about what makes you comfortable. They check how you walk how your weight sits on your feet and match the right shoe for your needs. They often have you test multiple types of shoes and inserts to really find the idea solution for your needs. I recently had an issue with a pair of my shoes that seemed like it might have been a manufacturer issue and they helped me get the issue resolved and out to go about my business. We've purchased our running shoes here for years. Came in yesterday for the "Sale"..Found the exact brand & model # of Brooks @ Dicks for the SAME price that weren't "on sale". Some of the staff is TOO much, FAKE, annoyingly repetitive with comments, watching every move you make while trying out shoes etc. The one flamboyant guy working inside the store was beyond fake and off putting. Reading my old review from 2013 of this same store makes me laugh because I've grown so much as a runner since then. I feel like this store has transitioned for the greater too! When I first came here in 2013, I just started running. From my review, they fitted me for my first running shoes and I was still doing 5K's just hoping that I could even complete a half marathon. Now, four years later, I'm still getting my shoes here because not only do I love supporting local, but the service is just unparalleled. They really come through with being honest and helping you find the right fit. They also carry the latest gear or can order it if it's not quite there yet. This week, I picked up my Altra Superior 3.0's which I'm using next weekend at my first 34 miler/55K ultra marathon in Antelope Canyon. I also am trying out the new Nathan VaporHowe 12L hydration vest since I'm hoping that it'll prevent chafing I get under my arms when running long distances even if I do use Body Glide (which wears off sometimes with our Arizonan hotter temps and sweating). This vest is sold out everywhere online and at REI but it's here at Tortoise and Hare. Nathan is always very helpful and if he's busy, then Kristen, Kaylee, (sorry if I misspelled), Josh, Mary, and Nathan's wife as well as other friendly staff I'm forgetting are there to assist. This store has grown and is becoming more like that long time Phoenix running store staple, Runner's Den, in quality and service, if not surpassing them. There are weekly night road and trail runs as well as yoga and Brunch runs on the weekends. They also host running form workshops. They accept and support runners of all levels. I recently started running and my shoes were giving me severe knee and foot pain... after coming here I'll never go anywhere else. Big thanks to Ben for helping me find a pair of shoes that fit (I was wearing a size 9.5 w and after sizing found out I am supposed to be wearing an 11 w).... I knew my toes felt cramped but wow, what an absolute difference that alone made.
