After calling asurion, the parent company, they stated that was incorrect and I should have received the service that was owed me through the insurance plan. Update - after going to Apple, they confirmed shutting off "find my" for phones and accounts not tied to the phone being repaired is unnecessary.

Now that the weather is better everyone is catching up on things like upgrading your cell phone. We got a great kid to help us. He didn't pressure us to buy anything. He asked us about our needs and recommended the right IPhones for us. We switched about four years ago and remain faithful to Apple. It still took about two hours but we transferred everything before we left.
