The weather was beautiful this past Saturday. Couldn't ask for a nicer day for a top down drive in the country so we decided to head towards Middleburg for the afternoon. On the way there we came across Aldie Peddler. The place couldn't be missed with all the colorful Adirondack chairs surrounding it and a big sign that read Amish furniture & 100's of wines under $10. That little sign grabbed our attention and we had to stop. The shop is an old converted house. We were warmly greeted by Bobbie as soon as we stepped in the door. There is so much to look at and each room houses something different. We entered through what used to be the living room - very charming with its large fireplace. This room housed the ever popular paw print magnets along with some knick knacks and a large wine cabinet. Next we moved into what is now the tasting area. There we bumped into Wally who immediately got us tasting some wines. Wally, the shop's owner, is an interesting man who oozes Southern hospitality. He definitely knows his wines, in fact I would say is passionate about them. We picked up a couple bottles of white from the tasting - perfect summer on the porch wine for $8.99 per bottle. We continued through the house with the next stop being the kitchen. Loads of jams pickles, relishes, some dishes and bowls. This is truly a great little country store. The last room we stopped in was the wine room. The selection here was outstanding. Yes, there are a lot of wines for under $10, but Wally also had a lot of nice wines in this room up to about $55. Wines from CA, Italy and even a wall of VA wines that Wally tasted and enjoyed. I loved the little blue post-its on the shelves declaring several of the different wines "one of Wally's favorites". My husband got to talking to Wally about Italian wines - we are especially fond of Brunello, but didn't see any on display. That's when Wally led us to the wine cabinet we had spotted on our way in. These wines he keeps locked up because someone used to come in and switch the price tags so they could purchase the high end wines for less. Shame on you whoever you are for attempting to take advantage of this local business owner! Wally opened the cabinet and lovingly pulled out some of his favorites, the last being a Lazy Creek pinot noir. He commented on the size of the punt which I learned Saturday is the indentation at the bottom of the bottle. This one was particularly deep and I believe the larger punt means the wine is meant to be stored for a longer period of time. This wine was a 2005 vintage and was meant to age anywhere from 5 to 13 years according to its label. We decided to give it a try since it was in its prime. Wally begrudgingly let us have it - it was his last bottle. We will definitely return to this wonderful store not only because the prices were reasonable and the selection was great, but because the owner (and Bobbie) were genuinely nice people who were passionate about the store and a downright pleasure to be around. read more

I would recommend the Seven Falls 2013 Cab but then there would be less for me... You seriously have to wander back into the kitchen and explore the various canned items for sale. Dont leave without a jar of pickles.... you'll regret it if you don't buy 2 jars... trust me! I very much loved eating the jar of Kickles- think bread and butter with tiny kick of spice.... so good that I ate the entire jar in 2 days. We sampled the pickled squash too- amazing. This antique lover's venue has a lot of kachke' and now a wine tasting salon. The best bets are the homemade food known as "Milo's Best!" (Milo is Wally's full sized all white boxer.) Wally knows what's happening, and he also sells some of the finest patio furniture in the DC area - of recycled wood and plastic. Just off US route 50 on the way to Middleburg, VA - this is worth a stop and a sample of their local Virginia, Californian and Italian wines. Why don't more people know about this place? First, everyone who works here is just absolutely wonderful. They're fun to talk with and can help you with any question you have with ease. They have tons of wine to choose from (the primary reason my wife and I go) and we always end up leaving with more stuff that we have to try (salsas, jams, etc.). I don't know much about wine. I don't know much about mayors. I know a LITTLE about boys named Wally. I know we walked outta this joint with two bottles of wine and I almost bought a Santa nutcracker for my mom. WTF? Something's afoot out in Aldie. Wally the mayor (ret.) is quite a firecracker. In the first five minutes, we threw four different wines down our gullets while Wally rambled on about his stint as mayor in Aldie (five years in a row), his granddaddy who fought in the Civil War, his friend who used to live next door and would fly him all over in her private jet (Bermuda, Paris, Napa, you name it). Wally's a baller. The sign out front, "100 wines under $10," got the little tires on my Versa screeching to a halt and we pulled in. We walked out with an organic red, Three Alarms (a portion of the proceeds go to burn victims), and some riesling, both part of the impromptu tasting and both under $10. The fire in the fireplace where the cash register is located made you want to warm your buns all afternoon! The Aldie Peddler is a mix of antiques meets wine meets Southern hospitality all rolled into an eclectic hodgepodge of items to purchase. This shop even has outdoor furniture from porch swings to Adirondack chairs as well as antiques of all types. The owner is as excited be in his shop as he is to have you there too. The wine selection surprised us. Its well thought out and arranged so you don't have any trouble finding your favorite Varitals or country of origin you desire. Other offerings in the store included dip mixes, pastas, pickles and jams and even fun decor for your home. What I found most heartwarming was a collection of stoneware mixing bowls that brought me back to when I was a little girl helping my grandma in her kitchen. Warm fuzzies, yes indeed. The best thing about this shop is Wally and Karen. They are super friendly and helpful. Free wine tastings! My friend tried three reds, that Wally recommended. She liked all three and ended up buying two. I purchased a jar of the sweet potato butter for my sister and a jar of fig preserves for my dad. They no longer have antiques, but they do sell some very nice outdoor furniture. The wine selection is extensive. Wally is very knowledgable about his wines. We walked in and it seemed like there was an impromptu mini tasting in the back, with this little bar and one of the owners. He was so nice, and helpful, and everyone hanging out at the mini tasting was friendly and welcoming (many were friends of his). How could you not love Wally and the Aldie Peddler? This fantastic little wine shop has a unique selection of everyday and finer wines. I've been hearing good things about this Aldie staple over my last 5 years as a Loudoun resident and finally stopped in this past weekend. The owner, Wally Lunceford, is incredibly hospitable and outgoing. He served up a handful of wines for me to sample ranging anywhere from under $10 to over $20 - I ended up buying 2 of them - a delicious Pinot Noir ($17 range) and a spicy Malbec with good balance around $14. I also picked up a bottle of one of the "100's of Wines Under $10" - it was a red blend highly recommended by Wally, and it did not disappoint when I opened it later that evening.
