I like the selection and organization/layout here. I was not looking for any particular wines today, so I can't comment on whether I would have been disappointed or not looking for anything particular. Their whiskey selection is very nice, including Canadian, blends, bourbon, scotch, and an unexpectedly interesting selection of ryes. The prices on these are a bit hit or miss though. Some were good deals, and some were maybe 50% more expensive than at stores - including Total Wines - in the Massachusetts area that I shop at occasionally, particularly for scotches. The small bottle selection also held some great deals if you like some common brands such as Evan Williams and Jim Beam. But it's very convenient and should definitely be a place to consider if you're shopping for/pricing liquor and wine. read more

unfortunately I felt very discriminated by the employees, they were following us like we were criminals just because of our color and race, two of the employees basically harassed myself, my brother, sister in law and boyfriend while my sister in law is over 18 and pregnant. I came here to pick up a bottle of whiskey called four roses and found it easily. It was not packed and people were good about social distancing. You need a mask in order to walk in or they will turn you away. I was impressed overall with the selection of alcohol that they had. Two stars. The good: wine supervisor Keith W. is the shining star of the location. He gave two great tequila recommendations and even gave me a sample of one. I bought literally double what I planned to purchase because I was so impressed. If I could give just him a review it would be 10/5 and I would be in the store for tastings twice a week. Phenomenal service and awesome experience. The bad: the cashiers and front staff are unhinged about ID requirements. Policy is policy, I get it. These guys made my wife drive home to get her ID and when she came back with her purse they didn't even check it. The cashiers didn't need to enter a birthday, scan the barcode, didn't even check if her ID was vertical, nothing. Simply a power trip. read more

I like this Total Wine location. It is located near Trader Joes, Frys, and all the other shops so that I can pick up drinks after grocery shopping. The employees are hit or miss. Some are very attentive and suggest some great ideas on what you should purchase based on what you like. Others roll their eyes when you inexperienced and don't quite know what you like. I always feel so awkward whenever I walk into a wine and beer store. I don't drink enough to know what's what and going to these places is a little overwhelming in the most exciting way. On this particular trip, I needed some very specific items to recreate some fruity beverages most fancy. I needed blue curaçao, Midori, peach schnapps, and vodka. Well, I thought I knew what vodka was until I got to the mile-long aisle named "Vodka." At that point it was MY job to figure out which one of the tens of thousands of choices best suited my needs. I looked over at some random customer who looked like he had his life figured out and I asked him which vodka was, like, a really good one. He actually looked a bit annoyed and even his pompous eyebrow gave me major attitude. He then arrogantly proceeded to ask me if I was looking for vodka made from potatoes, grain, wheat, or rye and for what I was intending to use the vodka. At that point I panicked and told him I was just trying to get my dog drunk and needed something cheap. He rolled his eyes and walked away. Crisis averted. I eventually flipped a coin and picked something called Starr Blu. (It's actually super good.) Well, if freaking vodka almost resulted in me listening to a dissertation on what a loser I was for not knowing alcohol, then I certainly wasn't gonna go through the same frustration with Schnapps. So I decided to go to customer service where I asked the woman working there if she had A, B, and C. She didn't even have to search her computer. She told me exactly where to find each item on which aisle, on which shelf, in between which alcohols. Like whoa. I was blown away. I followed her directions to the booze but dammit I forgot to ask her which brands were good. Well, I guess she could hear my psychic pleas for help because she super hero turned the corner and started walking down the aisle towards me in slow motion while the chaos and calamity around her calmed at the slow snap of her fingers. Boss status. I wish I could remember her name but for the life of me I cannot. One thing I know is that she has dreads. Gorgeous blonde dreads full of magic and knowledge of all things alcohol. I guess she could sense my panic because she literally came to make sure I was okay. I flooded her with sooooo many questions which she answered with more information than I could have imagined. Like Midori has more of a rounded melon flavor from the Chinese melons used while this other brand uses melons like honeydew and that cantaloupe stuff and it's slightly sweeter. I felt like taking my vows right there and pledging my life to her priesthood of liquor and light. It felt so amazing to have been given that kind of wonderful customer service. I left feeling super confident in all my purchases and the drinks I made tasted so much better with this employee's recommendations. Thank you Hero with Dreads. You are my saving grace. read more

They are generally very helpful at this location. Last visit, I was able to find a nice Tempernio and Santanay for a party I was going to. Their recommendation was right on the money as our hosts loved it, they are bigger wine buffs than we are! It took a little while to get some help but our overall experience was good here. Without bringing attention to my consumption, I frequent this establishment 3-4 times a month...at minimum. The senior employees are still consistent in being helpful and courteous, but the new bloods are not doing so well at that. Even in the cashier line I wanna wait in the longer line of a senior staff employee. So lets to tonights experience. The register belts are still to strong. The nice enough guy I guess, asked if the bottles could be removed from my hand basket and placed on the belt. I kindly did pretty much his job, because I'm not rude. He still moved the belt 6 inches nearly breaking my precious precious booze. I would say that you will need to take stand and keep those bottles in the basket. Total wine ruined my anniversary. My girlfriend and I have been loyal customers for many years, each spending thousands at this location alone. She ordered me a bottle of Dame Mas Reserva, for our anniversary and paid in advance. Well it arrived today and when she arrived to collect it (at the beginning of the time window they gave her mind you) they told her they had sold it to someone else. She was obviously very upset. She was then subjected to rudeness by total wine staff, with not so much as an apology. She was told that it is their policy to put the item on the shelf, so they can sell it for more than the customer was charged online. We will never do business with this or any other total wine location again. read more

I live in Atlanta, but was shopping for a special (50th birthday) gift for a close friend and wanted to find something I thought he would especially appreciate. After browsing the Tempe location Total Wine site, I had some questions about the availability of 3 premium scotch choices on the website as I was unclear as to the actual availability at that location. I called and spoke with Chad, providing the 3 items I was looking at. Chad answered my questions regarding the availability (only 1 was in stock). Since I am not a scotch drinker, I asked Chad some questions about the item I was interested in purchasing, and Chad was very helpful with his answers. I want to note that he could have easily given me a slanted response to nudge me in the direction of the premium bottle of alcohol I was interested in, but instead chose to provide an honest response. Following the online purchase and requesting of a 3rd-party pick up (this is really nice feature), I was a little unclear as to when it would be ready and was trying to coordinate a surprise pickup. I called the store, spoke with a different representative (Tony) who explained how their in-store process works. After hanging up, Chad called me back and let me know my order would be ready in 30 minutes. My friend was taken to the store for a reason not divulged, and Chad again (as I understand it) not only helped get him his surprise gift, but was very friendly for the interaction. In speaking with my friend afterwards, he and his wife were both very impressed with Chad and now know where they should do all of their liquor shopping. While Total Wine is also here in Georgia, this experience has been by far the most pleasant one of all. Thank you Chad!! read more

It should be zero stars. My boyfriend and I do Instacart for extra money and we were denied purchase because my boyfriend didn't have his ID on him. We were told we weren't allowed to leave because he could be underage and we could be consuming the product. The product I'm getting for another person who's birthday I have from the order. We stopped by today for some beer and wine. We tend to stroll in whenever we're at Tempe Marketplace. Our bill is never under $100. Today Thursday May 18 at around 6:45 pm we had the UNFORTUNATE Pleasure of being rung up by Leah. She was the most unpleasant cashier ever. When my husband made a comment about a coupon as she was ringing us up, she rolled her eyes, and gave such a pissed off look. Then just shook her head and said No, No, No coupons. There's such a thing called customer service. You hate your job and people so much??? Quit!!! My husband is the nicest man on the planet. I'm the one that can be unpleasant. This is a adult childs paradise. I picked up a Pony Keg for my New Years Eve get together and it was reasonably priced. The staff was helpful getting me taken care of and quick with answering any questions I had. I also picked up some liquor and some champagne. The manager seemed a bit stressed and short with me (I figured because they were so slammed) but other then it was a great place. I found out when returning my empty Keg they also fill growlers, so I will def make it back soon to get some craft beer. My first time in a Total Wine was during the 2016 holiday season. I needed some wine for our holiday meal -- both for drinking and for cooking -- and I had browsed their website beforehand to see what the inventory of whiskeys looked like. I was not prepared for the size of this place. First impression was that this is like a grown-up version of the (other liquor store nearby). Yes, the wine selection is enormous, but I'd say that only covers about 1/2 the store... maybe less. The rest of the store is various spirits, mixers, barware, and tobacco products. Apparently, they also have a section of non-alcoholic drinks and beer, but I never made it that far. After shaking off the shock caused by the sheer size of the place (I remember now how big the Sports Chalet had been when it was in this location), I located the bottle of wine that I was seeking. They had one left on the shelf. From a price perspective, the bottle next to the one I wanted was a bit less expensive than the other nearby place and within a few cents of Costco. In my experience, their prices appear to be competitive. Next stop was the whiskey aisle where I just "window-shopped" for a while. I swear the physical inventory is more extensive than their website indicates. I found a nice bottle for a good price and added it to my basket. By this time, I needed to be heading home, so I checked out and headed to the car. On the way through the lot, I realized that I'd forgotten to pick up an inexpensive bottle to use for cooking, so I headed back in -- woohoo, round 2! This time, I noticed all of the staff who were restocking the store and making themselves available to answer all manner of questions. Also, the tasting area... I missed that during the first round. I was on a mission, so I had to minimize distractions: dry, red, Italian, inexpensive. Within about 5 minutes, I found a respectable selection of Sangiovese in my price range. I wanted something that was also drinkable since most of the bottle wasn't going into the food. Both times, checkout was quick, friendly, and efficient. I am set for a while now, but I will be back when my supplies run low. read more

Holy beer and vodka. This place is ahhh-mazing. Wall-to-wall of wine, beer, liquor from around the world and across the USA and the state. So many people have told me I needed to stop by; a pool party with BYOB was the perfect reason to make my first stop! I was sad I didn't have enough time to just take my time looking around and ask the employees more questions [I need to order some out-of-state beer!]. During my first trip I encountered a few sample stands around the store, as well as employees at every turn who looked eager to answer any questions. I also noticed that for a lot of the more national-brand/well-known liquors, Total Wine carries a variety of sizes. At checkout there are a few tubs of the $1 shots for last-minute preparation. Although the focus is on wine [alcohol that I need to drink/learn more about], the selection of everything is just crazy varied. Prices are what you'd expect across the board. Am I the last person in Scottsdale to figure out how awesome this place is? Was able to sample quite a bit of beer and wine tonight while I was shopping. Even bought a bottle of wine that I sampled (it was $6.50- how do you say no to that?) They have a large variety of wines and all the beer you could imagine. (That's probably a stretch but I don't know that much about beer so it seemed impressive to me.) The employees were all helpful and friendly. They literally have everything here and the store is organized and clean. I found the prices were fair and some items less expensive than elsewhere (especially with the wine). Probably shouldn't have gone in hungry because I ended up leaving with overpriced cheese and crackers. we go to this location every few month we even buy bottles of Don Perignon there. I do not like the way that Liz the cashier treats me it has become a huge problem! The last visit she tried to steal my personal information off my drivers license for NO reason at all when we was paying for our drinks after carding me she started writing my information down on a blank piece of paper! I was outraged that a Caucasian lady would steal my identity in front of my face! I had to stop her! There was a long line of people paying before I got to her she did not ask for their ID. Most the customers were Caucasian and I am Native American. Today I visited the store and Liz did not ask the 5 people standing in line before us for any ID because they was Caucasian and they looked pretty young. Im in my 30's apon paying she answered a phone call she responded yes they are right here as if the employees were stocking us as we walked around the store! she then carded me and my partner. I confronted her saying she didn't ask the other people for ID. She replied its policy. Liz shouldn't be racially profiling people! This is illegal for her to sell alcohol and not ask for ID. Total Wine itself is great. But when your employees are rude, even the best places become horrible. Leah, an employee at this location, was incredibly rude to my sister and me. She had an obvious attitude, and when I was having a difficult time working the chip/card reader, she sighed in exasperation and literally tore the card from my hand to do it herself. I regret not asking for a manager right then and there. While I don't expect Total Wine cashiers to be the epitome of customer service or kindness, I've never had an issue at their other locations and never been treated so rudely at any other retail store.
