We discovered Cane Garden Rum Punch at an event and absolutely loved it! Someone told us it was sold at this Total Wine location, so we made a beeline over--and wow, what an experience! I've never been to this Total Wine before, and it honestly felt like heaven for anyone who enjoys a good drink. Anything you want, they have it. I wandered around for a bit (the selection is that good) and finally asked for assistance. The associate was super helpful and directed me right to it. Checkout was quick and easy, and I learned they have a rewards program you can sign up for using your phone number. This location is conveniently tucked inside the Essex Green Shopping Plaza, right across from ShopRite. The only pro about this location, to me, is most times if the Union store doesn't have something, most likely West Orange does. That was the case during my most recent visit. Thankfully the Total Wine app saved the day, so it was not a wasted trip because I already knew what I was looking for was in stock. That aside, no matter how sporadic it is, whenever I go here it is extremely difficult to find an associate for help or questions, there's almost always only one register open for checkout, and these things just dampen the experience for me every time. Pro-tip, they share a big parking lot with other stores, restaurants, and ShopRite so be cautious as you maneuver through it. Very young hite cashier on 9/26/2025 was racial profiling me. My husband and I came here to purchase wine for our anniversary and all I did was wait by the entrance while he shopped due to a work phone call, he called me when he was by the register, and wanted me to confirm the wine. So I did and walked back by the front door, to then later the cashier told my husband that she needs to check my ID. She said that it was policy and I said OK so I'll go to the car and get it long story short because I didn't have my ID on me. They told me we couldn't buy the bottle of wine. Honestly, ridiculous. A couple of notes - the parking lot is in the back of the main street area, so drive around the strip mall to get there; don't get side-tracked by the Shoprite parking on one side of the parking lot. I have been buying a lot every month for over 7 years from this store until now. It's just becoming more and more frustrating. As soon as you buy a wine, next time its out of stock. You want something more than 3 years old and under several hundred dollars, sucks to be you. You want something that looks good on their website, sure, but it won't be at the West Orange location. You want to order from another Total Wine location and pay delivery? Sure, but then they'll send you the wrong bottle, and when you email no reply, call customer service they can't help you you have to contact the store, contact that store no one replies. Most of the people who live nearby have given up and go to Amanti in Montclair or Wine Library (which is far from West Orange but at least doesn't have these problems). read more

I'm at this location often so I'm really getting to know the staff well and a sense for product offerings. Ralph is very helpful and extremely knowledgeable for recommendations and I also often get help from Andrea, who's also phenomenal and equally knowledgeable about spirits, they are both assets to this location! Store will sometimes get allocated inventory (I'm a Bourbon guy that spends hundreds of dollars here monthly) but seems they always seem to be "on hold"/reserved by the wine manager which doesn't make complete sense to me but maybe it does internally. This is my only reason for not a perfect 5 Star review here. To find harder to find offerings, I unfortunately have to look elsewhere often, despite how much I spend here and how often I frequent this location. read more

Had a disaster of an experience as an intended receiver of a gift. Delivery issue in trying to deliver to my office building so the driver returns it to the store and cancels the gift order instead of allowing for rescheduling. I called Total Wine and the customer service rep said she rescheduled it for the next day. No one showed up during the assigned time the next day and a couple hours later I get a text that the driver canceled the order and a refund was issued to the gift giver. I called customer service and got no where other than "we sent an email to the gift giver that they've been refunded and could re-order." Talk about a headache when trying to give/receive a gift. Wanted to buy 6 bottles Caymus 50th Anniversary. Internet search popups show $69.97 for the 750L but when I drove to the Union NJ store and showed this on my cell, the customer service guy said that's likely from a store in CA and their price is $10+ higher - $80.07 for the 750L. Sketchy- and convenient- and a time burn. I drove back down Rt. 22 to Vine Republic in Mountainside / Westfield NJ and they had this for $74.99. Worse, Vine Republic had the 1L for $84.99 versus Total Wines price in Union NJ $109.97...yep, almost $25 higher. I purchased 6 bottles of the 1L and left happy. Total Wines is definitely not the low cost provider and the constant pimping of their in-house Winery Direct offerings exhausting. Google search for all the above to confirm pretty easy- just use the Union NJ store as home location. Search Caymus 50th see what pops up for you- then see real price when you select store- a weak bait-and-switch. read more

Take pictures of the shelf price, folks. Great location and selection. And the wine folks know their stuff. But I've now learned to take photos of the prices on the shelf at the West Orange location because several times I've caught them scanning it at a higher price. I don't believe that the NJ consumer protection folks like seeing that. I should add that the most recent time when the manager came over for the price correction, she didn't make eye contact with me or communicate with me, let alone offer an apology for the store's error. Wifey and I stopped in at Total Wine today-sort of on a whim...and all I can say is WOW. We are far from wine snobs, but we know what we like and we are always willing to try new brands and vintages. We stepped through the door with one goal, to buy one REALLY good bottle of wine. With some help from a couple of amazing staff members we walked out with one really good bottle of wine, four other nice wines, two bottles of Prosecco, a new bourbon, a new Irish Cream (Kallahan's), an Irish whiskey, and a mixed six pack of different beers we haven't tasted before. I was really impressed with their overall selection of everything and their high end wine selection was incredible. The staff on site was also incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. The female manager working Thursday Feb 13th at 9pm was the nastiest person I have ever interacted with and she has no concept of customer service. I've only come in a here a few times but they hit all the right marks whenever I come. The first is the large selection of wines and liquors, though I typically stick with go to's and run of the mill drinks. The next thing is there are staff walking around to help you find what you're looking for as well as make suggestions as i'm not wine expert and don't care to to be so all the more reason these helpful staff to take care of my ignorance when it comes to wine selection, and have never heard the party complain about what I bring. The last thing I like are the craft beer and wine tastings that go on here. I am always happy to try samples of drinks to potentially find a new favorite drink or suggest to someone I know. A wide variety of wines organized by region and types makes this shopping experience an easy one. Not being a wine connoisseur, the staff was super helpful with assisting me. They were able to give several suggestions for 3 different types of wines and even walked me to each aisle of their recommendations. When I approached the check out, they had only one lane open and eventually opened a 2nd lane. When I asked the cash register is he could make sure I was able to get the 10% discount for buy 6 wines, he rudely remarked only if the wines were part of the 6 deal. Well I wasn't looking at the prices since I was just choosing what was recommended, I was little upset with his cranky attitude. I had a giftcards and the customer behind me was so in patient. I was looking online for a place that carries McKenzie's Hard Cider - specifically the Black Cherry - and this was the only store I could find in the area. None of the other liquor stores carried it - not even the big one I usually go to, which was disappointing to say the least. So I took a ride - about 25 minutes - to hopefully find it in stock. This place is located near Shoprite, in a strip mall. I walked into the store, and was thrilled to find an employee who was more than happy to tell me where to find it. Walked down the aisle, and it was exactly where he said it would be. A bit pricey at $8.99 for a six-pack of hard cider, but I know it's really good. Even though I had to drive a distance to get it, I would definitely return, thanks to the helpful staff and great-looking (and well-stocked) store. read more

No exaggeration: whenever I read up about an alcoholic beverage I never heard of before (most recently: Wódka Żołądkowa Gorzka and Stroopwafel) I know when I Google where to buy it the top result will be Total Wines. Then I venture here and promise myself to just buy that one bottle but find myself with a shopping cart and blowing $100 with each visit. It's just row after row after row of beers and wines and hard liquors and mixers and foods and... (you get the idea, right?) The store is always clean and easy to navigate. The staff are friendly. There's a big parking lot (and plenty of other stores scattered throughout the mall-complex). Bill W. (and all his friends) would not stand a chance in this place. I think that if your website says that a specific store location has a specific item in stock, it should actually be in stock. I wouldn't think that that's too much to ask, but for Total Wine it is. I drove out to this location. Couldn't find what I was looking for, showed an employee their site on my phone saying the gin was in stock in the West Orange store but was told they don't carry it, aren't approved to carry it and 'sorry'. Took a look around to see if the trip was salvageable, and while they have a large selection, their pricing is notably higher than other local shops that could be considered comparable: Vine Republic, Wine Library or Gary's for instance. All of whom - in my experience - have on their shelves what their sites say they do. Save yourself the trip and some cash and shop elsewhere. read more

Tonight I went to the West Orange location's Sip & Mingle event. Just like the previous Total Discovery Event I attended a few months ago, the store team did a wonderful job creating an enjoyable evening for all. The theme for this event was "Discover Spain & Portugal" and a diverse wine selection was presented for tasting. Each person could try up to four wines. To help us make our selections, descriptions of the types of wines were provided in a very concise pamphlet. In addition, the wine specialists there were able to give spot-on recommendations on which wines may appeal more to our palettes. To fully experience the wines, the store also laid out a spread of food that go well with Spanish and Portuguese wines. There were dried fruit and cheese, a meats platter (kind of charcuterie-ish), and an amazingly delicious seafood paella (from Coimbra Bar & Restaurant in the Ironbound). On the tables where Reserve and Grand Reserve Members sat, sampled, and chatted, there were also these books. I didn't get a chance to look through them last time I came here, but I flipped through some tonight it was really cool. Apparently, Total Wine sends their associates to Napa/California wine country and European wineries a few times a year. The books chronicle their trips to these regions, and contain photos and info about the wineries and wine production. It was really fascinating to flip through the books. I actually wish I had more time to look through them in more detail. Also, tonight I learned about the store's schedule of classes. There are a bunch of two-hour long classes about wine, beer, and spirits offered. There's a brochure with class descriptions and I would recommend checking them out to see if any spark your interest (they all looked pretty interesting to me). The wine and spirit classes are $20 each and the beer classes are $10. To sum it up, in addition to being a great store, this Total Wine has a lot of good things going on and I would recommend it hands down. read more

We have been doing curbside pick up since the Covid crisis went underway and are really appreciative of them stationing someone outside to help manage and call in orders in the beginning of this situation. We have always loved this place - the more you buy, the more you save (at least, that's what I always say....) Pre-Covid days we would go up and down every aisle, open to something new to try.... now we comb the online pages with determination to stock up on local favorites and unearth something new to try. We're big whiskey lovers, and if you're a part of their Grand Reserve club, you get an opportunity to enter a raffle at the end of the year for some of their special annual bottle allocations. Last year, we were fortunate enough to win one of their bottles, and the process was seamless, super easy, and safe. We cant thank the staff enough for all their process, integrity, and kindness - pre-Covid and now. I have been a customer for over 8 years, very religiously. I have a fairly high level of status. I am disappointed in the recent customer service by the on duty manager. I purchased a bottle of Chardonnay, chalk hill. I pulled the bottle under the least expensive vineyard which was approx $19. The shelf was completely stocked, not somebody pushing bottles around on the shelf. I came home and opened the bottle... hmm... this doesn't taste like $19. It was $29. Went back the next day with the empty bottle. I planned on a case of this was the situation that the $19 bottle tasted much better. The shelf was completely full and restocked. Again the $29 bottle was under the $19. The younger staff didn't catch it initially until He pulled his scanner. They filled the shelf so full it spilled over. I mean yes it was the wrong vineyard I purchased. Yes I should have looked. But, the manager was condescending. His staff completely filled the shelf with the more expensive bottles. The shelf under 3 price points was completely stuffed. His arrogance along with I am a fairly regular customer justifies this rating. Probably won't return either. Lost a consistent customer over a small price. read more

Beer by the bottle is not an option at Stew Leonard's, Bottle King, Liquor Locker, etc. The cheapest bottle here seemed to be $1.49. Not the most economical way to shop for booze, but at least you walk away with a variety of your choosing. Other reasons this store is getting 5 stars: 1) It's immaculate. 2) An employee asked me within 5 minutes if I needed help. The same employee went as far as to recommend a different bottle of wine from the same family I had selected. The best way to describe total wines is that it is one part Wegman's, one part Hobby Lobby and one part liquor store. The store itself is very large and may appear daunting upon first glance. Each aisle is labeled by type of wine and region, which makes finding your favorite fermented grapes easy. In addition, the store displays helpful placards that describes wines for novices (like myself). Total wine's beer section is just as large as their wine section! And similar to the wine section, beers are labeled by type and region. Total wines' beers range from your domestic staples like bud and miller, to your specialty craft beers like Brooklyn brewery, Cricket Hill, Ommegang, Dogfish Head, Smutty Nose and more. There is also a large selection of ciders and Meads. Besides an enormous selection of booze, total wine sells great gift sets. For instance, total wine offers fashionable wine cooler totes, fancy wine racks and awesome gift baskets (such as a wine and cheese gift basket). The best part about the gift sets is that they are really affordable and of high quality. Total wines also offers classes for a nominal fee! Some of the classes that were offered include blind wine tasting class, wine tour of Napa valley, home brewing 101, and Irish whiskey history and tasting. Moreover, their classes are held in a huge private classroom within the store. It gets even better! Total fine has a gigantic humidor that hold a plethora of cigars! It is a site to see! The west orange Total Wine location gets 4 stars because the store is unlike any other liquor that I have ever seen. The store has creative displays, is well lit, has large isles that are properly labeled and is super clean. In addition, this total Wine location really seems to engage the customer, making him/her feel like a wine/beer/cigar aficionado. However, it's location in the Essex green plaza makes it a pain to get to. In fact, I didn't know it existed until I unexpectedly took a wrong turn in the Essex green parking lot and found myself in the back of the plaza. In addition, though the floor staff of total wine were kind and very helpful, their cashiers counterparts were not. The cashiers were slow checking people out and a little hostile. Maybe a bottle of sangria will perk them up. I am a fan of total wine and plan to make it my go to adult beverage store! read more
